AB - This study aimed to evaluate the physical (particle size and ζ-potential) and techno-functional properties (emulsifying and foaming) of goat milk powders enriched with grape pomace seed extract (TME), as promising food ingredients in the formulation of functional food. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, along with advanced chemometric tools were employed as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for analyzing TME powders. All powders exhibited a unimodal particle size distribution and ζ-potential values more negative than −36 mV. ATR-FTIR and Raman spectroscopies combined with principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated distinct separation among skimmed goat milk (M), thermally treated skimmed goat milk (TM), and TME powders in different spectral regions (amide I, II, III, and fingerprint region). This separation resulted from the applied thermal treatment, the presence of phenolic compounds and their complexes with goat milk proteins, and the formation of Maillard reaction products. SEM analysis confirmed the different morphology and shapes of M, TM and TME powders. The 0.1% solutions of M, TM and TME exhibited good emulsifying properties (emulsion activity index and emulsion stability index) but showed poor foaming properties, except for the M sample. Solution concentrations higher than 0.1% for all samples (0.5% and 1.0%) displayed poor techno-functional properties. In summary, a schematic representation of the arrangement of casein micelles in 0.1% M, TM and TME samples, on oil/water and air/water surfaces was provided. The production of TME powders represents an innovative strategy for waste recovery in the production of functional food ingredients with good emulsifying properties.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe3O4, and a mixture of BaTiO3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe3O4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - Highly effective lignin-based microspheres were prepared by inverse copolymerization of lignin (kraft) from suspension, with poly(ethylene imine) and amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (A-LMS_Fe3O4) or manganese(IV)oxide nanoparticles (A-LMS_MnO2). The XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, TEM techniques, including the porosity determination, were performed to analyze morphological and structural properties of synthesized microspheres. The effect of pH, the adsorbent dosage, temperature and contact duration on a batch-mode adsorption efficiency of arsenate and chromate (oxy)anions removal was tested. Spontaneous adsorption was found to be feasible, reaching the adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) (62.9 mg g-1), As(V) (47.8 mg g-1) by A-LMS_Fe3O4, and of Cr(VI) (73.9 mg g-1), As(V) (62.5 mg g-1) using A-LMS_MnO2 adsorbent. Fast removal rates were confirmed via kinetic study, using pseudo-second order, the Weber-Morris and the single resistance mass-transfer model, with a limiting step of the diffusion transport through pores. The correlation of fixed-bed-column results with Bohart-Adams, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and Dose Response models displayed that breakthrough behavior was influenced by flow rate and the inlet concentration. Significant potential of produced bio-adsorbent is further confirmed by the pore surface diffusion modeling, desorption study and adsorption from multi-component system using artificial water.

abstract = "Highly effective lignin-based microspheres were prepared by inverse copolymerization of lignin (kraft) from suspension, with poly(ethylene imine) and amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (A-LMS_Fe3O4) or manganese(IV)oxide nanoparticles (A-LMS_MnO2). Significant potential of produced bio-adsorbent is further confirmed by the pore surface diffusion modeling, desorption study and adsorption from multi-component system using artificial water.",

AB - Thermodynamic parameters (densities, viscosities, speed of sound, and refractive index) of four series of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range from 15 to 60 degrees C for the process of geopolymerization. Mixtures of Na2SiO3 and NaOH of different molar concentrations ( from 2M to 8M with step 2) were used as an alkaline activator. The sample with the highest NaOH concentration also shows the highest values of all thermodynamic parameters. Metakaolin, obtained by calcination of kaolin at 750 degrees C, was used as the starting material. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Spectroscopy. Results of FTIR analysis correlated with results of Raman Spectroscopy. Due to the polymerization process, the changes in the phonon spectrum were confirmed. The different concentrations of activators do not notably change the Si/Al ratio.

AB - Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drugs in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration and heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of lyophilization and higher total powder yield in case of spray drying by diminishing material deposition on the wall of the drying chamber. The resulting gelatin-free and gelatin-containing powders carried polyphenols in amount similar to 190 and 53-75 mg gallic acid equivalents GAE/g of powder, respectively. Microwave-assisted extract formulation was distinguished from the others by a higher content of polyphenols, proteins and sugars, higher bulk density and lower solubility. The type of the drying process mainly affected the position of the gelatin-derived -OH and amide bands in FTIR spectra. Spray-dried formulations compared to freeze-dried expressed higher thermal stability as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry analysis and a higher diffusion coefficient; the last feature can be associated with the lower specific surface area of irregularly shaped freeze-dried particles (151-223 mu m) compared to small microspheres (similar to 8 mu m) in spray-dried powder.

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the in uence of the polyhedral oligo silsesquioxanes (POSS)
structure obtained by facile synthesis on the improvement in mechanical properties of acrylate composite
lms. The composite lms consist of UV cured Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol
dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as reinforcement. Introduced
functionalities considering hydroxyl, both hydroxyl and allyl, and methacrylate groups in POSS-M,
POSS-M-A and POSS-M-Cl, respectively, enabled optimization of system compatibility. Composites
were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt. % of POSS particles. A morphology of hybrid composites was examined
by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cross-linking density (3), storage modulus (G'), damping
factor (tanδ) and Tg of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA).
A higher amount of methacrylate groups contributed to the increased cross-linking points and thus to
increased storage modulus for composites with POSS-M-Cl. Micro Vickers hardness (HV) of hybrid
composites showed incompatibility of POSS-M particles with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix that led to
a decrease of composite hardness when compared to neat polymer matrix. The highest hardness
improvement was obtained by the addition of POSS-M-A reinforcement (increase by 50%). Brazilian
test was used to estimate the elastic modulus by the indirect test method and it indicated a decrease
in mechanical properties with the POSS addition higher than 1 wt.%. Methods used in this paper for
estimation of reinforcing e ect clearly indicate that the incompletely condensed POSS-M-A exhibit the optimal performance of composites based on Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix due to the presence of both
hydroxyl and allyl functional group.
