AB - Oxidized starch, an additive used in paper manufacturing and products for construction industry, is usually produced using harmful oxidant, such as hypochlorites or periodates. In this study, a simple and efficient eco-friendly laboratory and industrial procedures for starch oxidation were developed. The procedure involves application of small amounts of more environmentally friendly oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, a novel special metal complex catalyst such as copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate and biobased plasticizers. Optimization procedure, with respect to the quantity of hydrogen peroxide and temperature in the presence of iron(II) sulphate catalyst, was performed by using the response surface methodology. Comparative analysis of the use of the other catalysts that is copper(II) sulphate, copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate, indicated copper(II) citrate as the catalyst of choice. Improvement of starch is achieved using three plasticizers: ricinoleic acid (RA), diisopropyl tartarate, as well as epoxidized soybean, linseed and sunflower oils. The effects of hydrogen peroxide and catalyst concentrations, as well as the reaction temperature in the presence of naturally based plasticizers on the physicochemical, thermal and morphological properties of oxidized starch are presented. According to the results obtained in initial experiments, the optimal industrial process is based on the use of copper(II) citrate (0.1 %) as a catalyst and RA (3 %) as a plasticizer.

AB - Commercial gamma - Al2O3 particles, Al2O3 n, and synthesized Al2O3 doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) were used as reinforcements to enhance the toughness of an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). Alumina modification with vinyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-VT, and methacryloyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-ME functionalities contributed to the increase in the extent of covalent binding at the UPR/filler interface. Tensile tests showed a slight improvement in the toughness of UPR/Al2O3 Fe composite and a significant improvement for the UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT composite at a 1.0 wt.% particle loading. An enhancement in the micro Vickers hardness for UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT and improved DMA properties were also evidenced.

AB - The starch oxidation involves oxidation of primary or secondary hydroxyl to carbonyl
or carboxyl groups, whereas the number of these groups indicates the level of oxidation.
Oxidized starch is used as surface sizing agent and coating binder in the paper industry,
or as polymeric filler that increases the polymer degradability. The main objective of the
presented study is to investigate the effects of various parameters on the oxidation
process of the wheat starch, using dry method (Fig. 1). These parameters include
oxidizer concentration, catalyst type (iron(II) sulphate, copper(II) sulphate and
copper(II) citrate), presence of plasticizers/modifiers (ricinoleic acid, (R-(Z))-12-
hydroxy-9-octadecenoic acid, RA) and diizopropyl tartarate ((dipropan-2-yl 2,3-
dihydroxybutanedioate, DIPT) and reaction temperature (20 and 80 °C). The obtained
results suggest that higher values of carbonyl and carboxyl groups lead to an increase of
swelling capacity and solubility, while viscosity decreases, compared to the native wheat
starch. The analysis of FTIR spectra, especially region of carbonyl/carboxyl groups
absorption, reveals high impact of process parameters on the oxidation degree and band
structure. The morphology of native and oxidized starches, investigated by the SEM
method, shows that after oxidation the surface of the starch particles becomes smoother
then for the native starch, with aggregation of small and large-sized granules.

AB - Two types of alumina particles, commercial (c-Al2O3) and iron doped (Fe-Al2O3), were functionalized with 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (one-step) and two-step consecutive process, i.e. firstly using 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane followed by methyl ester of linseed oil (biodiesel) to produce Al(2)O(3)ATPMS-BD reinforcement, respectively. The effect of modifier type and variable amount of alumina particles on the dynamical and mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester resin-based composites was studied. The highest improvement of the tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness, 78.1 and 163%, respectively, was obtained at 1.0 wt% of Fe-Al(2)O(3)APTMS-BD addition. The obtained multifunctional composites can be potentially applied in construction and mining industries.

AB - Presented study was aimed to investigate the influence of surface functionalization of the industrial kraft lignin (KL) on mechanical and thermal properties of high-performance and fireproof composites based on unsaturated polyester (UPe) resin. In order to improve flame retardant properties, surface of the KL was modified by phosphorylation method in two-step process. First, direct grafting of phosphorus chloride on KL phenolic hydroxyl groups was performed and phosphoric acid ester of KL was formed. In the second step, phosphor ester of KL was recovered by precipitation in cooled isopropyl alcohol and the final obtained product, phosphorylated industrial kraft lignin with methyl terminal groups (KLP) was obtained. KLP mass contents in UPe based composites varied from 0.5 wt.% to 5.0 wt.%. Structural characterization was done via Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effects of KLP surface functionalization and KLP mass contents on the UPe tensile properties were studied. Tensile strength (σ), elongation (ε) and Young's modulus of elasticity (E) and Shore A (Sh A) hardness of the UPe/KLP composites were analyzed in relation to the structure of KLP modification. Tensile testing results showed an increase in σ of 31 % for UPe/KL sample with 1.0 wt.% KL particles compared to the bare UPe matrix. The origin and cause of fracture that occurred during uniaxial tensile testing were analyzed using stereo microscopy. The obtained composites were tested on fire retardant properties in accordance with the standard test method UL-94V, and composites with 5.0 wt.% loaded KLP achieved V-1 category.
%. Strukturna karakterizacija funkcionalizovanog kraft lignina i kompozita izvršena je primenom FT-IR spektroskopije. Proučavan je uticaj funkcionalizacije i masenog udela kraft lignina na tvrdoću, zatezna i termička svojstva nezasićenih poliestеrskih smola. Shore A) ostala zadovoljavajuća.

Tensile testing results showed an increase in σ of 31 % for UPe/KL sample with 1.0 wt.% KL particles compared to the bare UPe matrix. The origin and cause of fracture that occurred during uniaxial tensile testing were analyzed using stereo microscopy. The obtained composites were tested on fire retardant properties in accordance with the standard test method UL-94V, and composites with 5.0 wt.% loaded KLP achieved V-1 category., U radu su prikazani rezultati ispitivanja mogućnosti primene fosfatnih estara kraft lignina kao usporivača gorivosti u polimernim kompozitnim materijalima baziranim na nezasićenim poliestеrskim smolama. %. Strukturna karakterizacija funkcionalizovanog kraft lignina i kompozita izvršena je primenom FT-IR spektroskopije. Proučavan je uticaj funkcionalizacije i masenog udela kraft lignina na tvrdoću, zatezna i termička svojstva nezasićenih poliestеrskih smola. Shore A) ostala zadovoljavajuća.",

AB - The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work. Two methods of tannin modification were applied: direct method using ammonium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride buffer or diethylenetriamine (DETA); and a two-step method including tannin modification with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in first step to produce epoxy modified tannin, ET, and further modification with heteroaromatic amines or linseed oil fatty acids (LFA) in second step. The obtained anticorrosive additives were characterized using ATR-FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Epoxy, amino, hydroxyl, acid and iodine values of the synthesized inhibitors were determined according to standard methods. The prepared alkyd coating with tannin inhibitors was tested according to standard SRPS EN ISO 4628 method. Anticorrosive coating containing modified tannin based additive showed increased anticorrosive properties, good adhesion and coverage comparing to the coating with zinc phosphate additive. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results.

AB - The investigation of the influence of acid/base treatment and addition level of non-metallic fractions (NMFs), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards, on the mechanical properties and shrinkage of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR)-based composites was main topic presented in this paper. NMF particles were treated using four different oxidative/etching agents: H2SO4/KMnO4 (NMF1), H2SO4/HNO3 (NMF2), HNO3 (NMF3), and NaOH (NMF4). Treated NMF(1-4) particles were characterized using fourier transform infrared, Boehm titration, optical microscopy and SEM analysis. Tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness of UPR/NMF(1-4) composites were the most improved with addition of 0.5wt% of filler, for 5.9-24.7%, in comparison to composite filled with non-treated NMF particles. Cross-linking density (nu), storage, and loss modulus (G' and G''), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) testing. Shrinkage measurements, performed using Aramis 6.2.0, showed significant improvement in shrinkage reducing, for 17.8-30.6%, by introduction the oxidized NMF particles. Qualitative/quantitative evaluation of NMF(1-4) surface functionalities helped in understanding their influences on mechanical, DMA and shrinkage properties change of studied composites. POLYM. AB - This paper presents the analysis of the quantity of plastic and waste printed circuit boards obtained after the mechanical treatment of electrical and electronic waste (E-waste) in the Republic of Serbia, as well as the recycling of non-metallic fractions of waste printed circuit boards. The aim is to analyze the obtained recycled material and recommendation for possible application of recyclables. The data on the quantities and treatment of plastics and printed circuit boards obtained after the mechanical treatment of WEEE, were gained through questionnaires sent to the operators who treat this type of waste. The results of the questionnaire analysis showed that in 2014 the dismantling of E-waste isolated 1,870.95 t of plastic and 499.85 t of printed circuit boards. In the Republic of Serbia, E-waste recycling is performed exclusively by using mechanical methods. Mechanical methods consist of primary crushing and separation of the materials which have a utility value as secondary raw materials, from the components and materials that have hazardous properties. Respect to that, the recycling of printed circuit boards using some of the metallurgical processes with the aim of extracting copper, precious metals and non-metallic fraction is completely absent, and the circuit boards are exported as a whole. Given the number of printed circuit boards obtained by E-waste dismantling, and the fact that from an economic point of view, hydrometallurgical methods are very suitable technological solutions in the case of a smaller capacity, there is a possibility for establishing the facilities in the Republic of Serbia for the hydrometallurgical treatment that could be used for metals extraction, and non-metallic fractions, which also have their own value. Printed circuit boards granulate obtained after the mechanical pretreatment and the selective removal of metals by hydrometallurgical processes was used for the testing of the recycling potential. Granulometric analysis as well analysis of chemical composition of obtained fractions was performed. Subsequently, the manual classification of different types of polymeric material contained in the granulate was made, and both the apparent specific gravity and the chemical composition of the classified types of polymeric materials were determined. Chemical composition of granulate was determined by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) using Thermo Scientific Niton XL 3t, while the identification of residual polymers was determined by the FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) method on the Bomen MB 100 device in range 4000 to 400 cm(-1). Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that after the hydrometallurgical treatment of printed circuit boards, and the separation of metals that have the highest value, the residual non-metallic fraction have the utility value and can be used for various purposes, such as developing new polymer materials for technical purposes that have been investigated by many researchers and mentioned in this article.

AB - Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. UPR, based on products of PET depolymerization, and NMF were characterized using FTIR, NMR, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis. Cross-linking density (v), storage modulus (G'), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the DMA testing. Tensile (sigma(t)) and flexural (sigma(f)) strength, and micro Vickers hardness indicated good composite performance under static load. Thermal and flame resistant properties were analyzed by TGA/DTG and UL-94 flammability test whereby V-2 category of appropriate composite was achieved. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials.

AB - This paper demonstrates possibility of separate zinc and lead recovery from coal composite pellets, composed of EAFD with other synergetic iron-bearing wastes and by-products (mill scale, pyrite-cinder, magnetite concentrate), through a two-stage process. The results show that in the first, low temp erature stage performed in electro-resistant furnace, removal of lead is enabled due to presence of chlorides in the system. In the second stage, performed at higher temperatures in Direct Current (DC) plasma furnace, valorisation of zinc is conducted. Using this process, several final products were obtained, including a higher purity zinc oxide, which, by its properties, corresponds washed Waelz oxide.

AB - The possibility of using the waste plastic as reducing agent in blast furnace for obtaining pig iron is in focus for the past couple year. The simulation of blast furnace process in BFC software has been performed in order to analyze the coke and coals saving, CO2 emission and determining the economic benefits. Three different batches were made for comparative analysis, depending on the batch composition and input of batch components into the blast furnace: case 1 (C1), case 2 (C2) and case 3 (C3). The base case, C1 contains sinter (bulk material) which is needed for obtaining 1 tone of pig iron, quartz which provides slag alkalinity and coke as reducing and energy agent. C2 has the same components as C1, but contains pulverized coal instead one part of coke and C3 contains granulated waste plastic instead coke in an approximately the same amount as pulverized coal. The substitution of coke with pulverized coal and waste plastic is 18.6 % and 25.2 %, respectively. The economic, productivity and ecologic aspects have been analyzed. The consumption of each tone of waste plastic in blast furnace saves 360 $, which is 18 times more than its price, bearing in mind that the market price of coke is 380 $/t % and waste plastic 20 $/t. Regarding the specific productivity, it decreases from 2.13 for C1 to 1.87 for C3. From an environmental aspect there are two main benefits: reduction of CO2 emission and impossibility of dioxin formation. The CO2 emission was 20.18, 19.46 and 17.21 for C1, C2 and C3, respectively.
U cilju analize uštede koksa i uglja, smanjenja emisije CO2 i utvrđivanja ekonomskih benefita urađena je simulacija visokopećnog procesa u BFC programskom paketu.

U procesu prerade, posebno mesto zauzima pravilan odabir pred-tretmana u
postupcima mehaničke reciklaže ove vrste otpada. Kako je osnovni pred-tretman e-otpada
mehaničke prirode, u ovom radu prikazan je novi pristup kojim je omogućeno odvajanje lako
topivih frakcija iz metaličnog granulata e-otpada. Primenom koncepta delimičnog rastapanja i
centrifugiranja u posebno izrađenom laboratorijskom uređaju, moguće je ostvariti stepen
razdvajanja lako topivih metala od ostatka metaličnog granulata, iznad 98%. Na taj način,
unapređenjem procesa tretmana metaličnog granulata e-otpada, odnosno prevođenjem istog u
ranim fazama pred-tretmana, u tržišno prihvatljiviji materijal, moguće je ostvarenje
zanačajanog ekonomskog benefita. U ovom radu, prikazan je materijalni bilans, dobijenih
produkata pred-tretmana, postupkom delimičnog topljenja i centrifugiranja metaličnog
granulata e-otpada.

AB - This paper presents a preliminary design for treatment of mining and metallurgical wastewaters (MMW) from the basin of antimony 'Zajača', which contains high concentrations of arsenic and antimony. MMW have been investigated in laboratory, due to large difference in concentrations of pollutants. Metallurgical wastewaters were treated using iron (II)-sulfate and lime milk used to adjust the pH value at 7. After chemical treatment of metallurgical wastewater and its joining with mining wastewater, residual amount of arsenic in water was below maximum allowed concentrations, while the concentration of antimony, remained above the maximum allowed value. The final phase of purification process was performed using ion exchange resin. After treatment of MMW, they can be used as technical water in the smelting process of secondary raw lead materials.
