AB - The framework of this study was a comprehensive investigation of Morus nigra L. extracts, with the aim to establish the correlation between chemical composition and antioxidant/hepatoprotective activity of a series of black mulberry extracts obtained from aerial parts of the plant. Black mulberry leaf (MLEE), bark (MBEE), juice (MJ) and fresh fruit (MFEE) extracts were obtained using the conventional Soxhlet extraction, while the supercritical CO2 extraction procedure was employed for preparation of the seed oil (MSO). Analysis of the chemical composition was performed using spectrophotometric, HPLC and GC methods. For the evaluation of antioxidant activity, in vitro FRAP and DPPH assays were applied. In Haan strain NMRI mice with streptozotocin-induced oxidative stress, in vivo antioxidant activity and liver tissue integrity were examined. The content of polyphenolic compounds was the highest in MBEE (68.3 ± 0.7 mgGAE/g) with the most abundant compounds being polyphenolic acids, followed by MLEE (23.4 ± 0.5 mgGAE/g) with the flavonoids isoquercetin and rutin being present in a significant amount. An analysis of MSO revealed a high content of γ-linoleic acid. The highest antioxidant activity in vitro (FRAP and DPPH) was observed for MLEE, MBEE and MSO. Beneficial effects were confirmed in vivo, with lower values of hepatosomatic index, potentiation of the activity of the enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, a lower rate of lipid peroxidation and reduced positivity for the P450 enzyme in animals treated with MLEE, MBEE and MSO. Black mulberry leaf and bark extracts as well as seed oil exhibited significant antioxidant activity. Apart from the confirmed biological properties of the fruit and leaf extracts, the observed activities of black mulberry seed oil and bark extract imply its importance as a sustainable source of phytochemicals.

AB - This study presents the impact properties of the new form of hybrid thermoplastic composites. The Kolon fabrics were impregnated with the 10 wt% poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution with the addition of silica (SiO2) particles originating from rice husk or layered double hydroxide modified silica particles (FeAl-LDH@SiO2) as reinforcement. All the composites consisted of one layer of the impregnated fabric where the silica particles concentrations were 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% regarding PVB. The impact properties of the composite samples were analyzed by the controlled energy puncture impact tester. The structures of the composite samples were determined by the attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results showed that the Kolon/PVB/1 wt% FeAl-LDH@SiO2 sample yielded the maximum impact force.

AB - A simple sol-gel method and external gelatinization method of hollow alumina spheres synthesis were developed in this study. The spheres were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) producing PEI-Al2O3 via (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxy-silane, GLYMO, linker. Characterization results, obtained using XRD and SEM microscopy revealed spherical geometry with a hollow core of PEI-Al2O3 adsorbent. Introduction of a large number of the amino group, 6.9 mmol g(-1), contributes to achieving high adsorption capacities, q(m), of 95.6, 124.9, 61.3, and 125.9 mg g(-1) for Cd2+, Pb2+, As(V), and DCF, respectively, which is obtained by using the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic studies indicated feasible adsorption and higher spontaneity with temperature increase. The kinetic study conveniently modeled using pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Weber-Morris kinetic model, as well as single resistance mass transfer model, indicated a change of the contribution of diffusional processes during adsorption with a dominance of intra-particle diffusion. The fixed-bed column adsorption data, fitted using Bohart-Adams, Clark, Yoon-Nelson, and Thomas models, showed lower capacity in comparison to batch study, and thus clear potential applicability of PEI-Al2O3 was deduced even at a high loading of feed water.

AB - Intelligent pedestrian crossings were made with the aim to increase pedestrian safety at poorly lit locations. New technologies include the design of polymer materials that have high performance by optimizing properties such as compression, tensile and impact strengths, wear resistance, hardness and transparency. The desired properties are set up to face the demands of a heavy daily traffic load and enable the functionality. Laminate material consists of the epoxy composite reinforced with silica (SiO2) derived from rice husk waste and a protective thermoplastic polyurethane layer. The top layer of the laminate material is a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) serving as a protective layer with high wear resistance and good adhesion with epoxy composite. Silica obtained from rice husk waste was used in reinforcing of the epoxide in order to improve the mechanical properties, diffuse the light, improve the adhesion with TPU and decrease the production costs. Micro-Vickers hardness of the epoxy composite was increased by 70% with the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2. Impact energy of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 was increased by 272.9% after adding the TPU layer. Compressive strength of the epoxy resin is improved by 16.2% by reinforcement with 15 wt% of SiO2, while the laminate composite material showed 207% higher compressive strength than the commonly used asphalt pavement. Moreover, the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2 improved the adhesion between epoxy composite and TPU layer (11.2%). Thus, obtained laminated material made of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 (obtained from rice husk waste) and TPU598 showed mechanical properties and LED light transmission/diffusion appropriate for application in the intelligent pedestrian crossings.

Fe2+-Al3+ layered double hydroxides (FeAl-LDH) were synthesized by co-precipitation with ratios Fe : Al of 3 : 1 in the presence of SiO2 particles from the rice husk. Characterization of the synthesized FeAl-LDH"SiO2 particles was performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS. Prepared FeAl-LDH"SiO2 particles were used as reinforcing agents in 1, 3 and 5 wt% quantity in poly (methyl) methacrylate matrix. The aim of this study was to examine whether FeAl-LDH"SiO2 particles affect the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Microindentation, tensile and impact testing determined the mechanical properties of the obtained composites.

AB - As a renewable resource, starch is considered to be fully biodegradable and nonpolluting to the environment but the hygroscopicity of starch is the main disadvantage for wider applicability in the production of a polymer-based material. Hydrophobically modified starch prepared using natural-based plasticizers/modifiers in a first step ([-]-diisopropyl D-tartrate [DiPT], ricinoleic acid [RA] and epoxidized soybean oil [ESO]), and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) in a second step contributed to better compatibility, and thus reinforcing of composites. Tailored processing conditions, structural/morphological properties, hydrophobicity, and water-resistance of the modified starch were established. In addition, the Charpy impact and tensile strength of composites, based on poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) and modified starches, were determined. Increased tensile strength and Young modulus of the composite using starch-modified with DiPT-MAPP, that is, 3 and 83%, respectively, indicated the possible applicability of obtained materials.

AB - The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of the structure of Mn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) on the adhesion behavior of composite adhesives on two Al alloys (L3005 and L8079). The composite adhesives were made out of the UV-curing Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BT) as polymer matrix and the addition of 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH as adhesion enhancers. Adhesion was evaluated by using the micro Vickers hardness testing procedure. The wetting angle of composite adhesives to the Al substrates was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter b obtained from the microhardness tests. The highest increase in adhesion was observed for BT with 5 wt. % of Mn-Al LDH on L3005 substrate, which was more than 15 times higher than the adhesion for the neat BT. The morphological segregation of composite adhesives after the contact with Al substrates was examined by optical microscopy and a higher compatibility of Mn-Al LDH particles with L3005 substrate was found. The methods used for the adhesion properties assessment suggested that the Mn-Al LDH was the best adhesion enhancer of the BT matrix for L3005 substrate containing a higher content of Mn and surface hydroxyl groups.

AB - Gelatin-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and gelatin-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) mucoadhesive buccal films loaded with propranolol hydrochloride (PRH) were prepared by semi-solid extrusion 3D printing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the synthetic polymers PVP and PVA on thermal and mechanical properties and drug release profiles of gelatin-based films. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed that hydrogen bonding between gelatin and PVP formed during printing. In the other blend, neither the esterification of PVA nor gelatin occurred. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed the presence of partial helical structures. In line with these results, the mechanical properties and drug release profiles were different for each blend. Formulation with gelatin-PVP and PRH showed higher tensile strength, hardness, and adhesive strength but slower drug release than formulation with gelatin-PVA and PRH. The in silico population simulations indicated increased drug bioavailability and decreased inter-individual variations in the resulting pharmacokinetic profiles compared to immediate-release tablets. Moreover, the simulation results suggested that reduced PRH daily dosing can be achieved with prolonged-release buccal films, which improves patient compliance.

AB - Two synthesized eco-epoxy components based on TA: (A) glycidyl ether and (B) glycidyl phosphate ester, are used, as a replacement for the Bisphenol A (BPA) based epoxy component, for bonding aluminum (Al) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). Their effect on the mode I fracture toughness (G(I)) is evaluated by Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) testing while using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for in-situ crack tip monitoring. Compared to the reference adhesive, an improvement of (G(I)) of Al (43%) and CFRP (100%) is obtained when using adhesive B. Moreover, regardless of the adherend material, a stick-slip pattern of crack growth is observed. Weak adhesion of the reference adhesive leads to an adhesive failure vs. a cohesive-adhesive failure in the case of adhesive B. On the contrary, the modification of adhesive A has an adverse effect on the G(I) of Al (-33%) and CFRP (-78%) as opposed to their reference counterparts.

AB - This study processes and characterizes propranolol hydrochloride/gelatin mucoadhesive buccal films. Two types of gelatin are used: Gelatin from porcine skin, type A (GA), and gelatin from bovine skin (GB). The influence of gelatin type on mechanical, mucoadhesive, and biopharmaceutical characteristics of buccal films is evaluated. Fourier-Transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis show that GA with propranolol hydrochloride (PRH) in the film (GAP) formed a physical mixture, whereas GB with PRH (GBP) form a compound-complex. Results of mechanical testing (tensile test, hardness) revealed that GAP films exhibit higher elastic modulus, tensile strength, and hardness. A mucoahesion test shows that GBP has higher adhesion strength, while GAP shows higher work of adhesion. Both in vitro release study and in silico simulation indicated that processed films can provide effective drug transport through the buccal mucosa. In silico simulation shows improved bioavailability from buccal films, in comparison to the immediate-release tablets-indicating that the therapeutic drug dose can be markedly reduced.

Both in vitro release study and in silico simulation indicated that processed films can provide effective drug transport through the buccal mucosa. In silico simulation shows improved bioavailability from buccal films, in comparison to the immediate-release tablets-indicating that the therapeutic drug dose can be markedly reduced.",

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

AB - Composites based on poly(methyl methacrylate), dimethyl itaconate matrix and alumina particles were prepared. Ferrous oxide-doped alumina particles (Al2O3Fe) and commercial alumina nanoparticles (Al(2)O(3)n) modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (AM) and methyl esters of linseed oil fatty acids (biodiesel-BD) were used as reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the prepared composites, containing 1, 3 and 5 wt% of surface-modified alumina particles, are compared to a neat polymer matrix. The particles were characterized by single-beam Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The mechanical properties of the composites were determined by micro-Vickers hardness and impact testing. The morphology of the surface of the composites exposed to cavitation was observed through a field emission scanning electron microscope. AFM analysis was used to compare surface features seen using the SEM and to interpret the surface degradation properties. The hardness, cavitation resistance and high-impact energy resistance of the composites are better in the case of AM surface modification of alumina fillers, but biodiesel modified particles have comparable mechanical properties and a stabilized Al-O-Si bond that could be important when a composite is exposed to humidity or a wet environment.

AB - Basalt as a filler in a polymer-based composite material fulfils the demand of being natural, environment-friendly material for the production of various composite materials. The material could be used as protective layer and the abrasion should be tested in order to evaluate the properties of the material. The cavitation test enables the evaluation of the possible service in conditions that simulate the extensive erosion. The presence of basalt in the matrix improves the resistance to cavitation. The possibility to further improve the material could be obtained using the reinforcement of the matrix itself by incorporation of submicron ceramic particles into the composite. The obtained hybrid composite material with the addition of reinforcement in the matrix further improves the cavitation resistance.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) structure on the adhesion behaviour of composite films onto a metallic surface. The composite films consisted of UV cured bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. Composites were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt % of POSS. Adhesion was evaluated using the micro Vickers hardness testing method. The contact angle of composite films to a brass substrate was measured and compared to the adhesion parameter obtained from microhardness measurements. Optical microscopy indicated morphological segregation in the hybrid films suggesting the compatibility extent between the matrix and each particle. The shape and size of the indent were analyzed and correlated with adhesion quality. The methods used for the estimation of adhesion strength and quality clearly indicated that the highest adhesion enhancement of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix was POSS reagent containing both polar (hydroxyl) and nonpolar (unsaturated aliphatic - allyl) side groups.

AB - This paper presents a new process for obtaining eco-epoxide adhesives synthesized from bio-renewable raw material (tannic acid-TA) and used for bonding lightweight materials (aluminum (Al) and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)). Two synthesized bio-epoxy components based on TA, (A) glycidyl ether and (B) glycidyl phosphate ester of TA, were used as a replacement for the toxic epoxy component based on Bisphenol A. The effect of eco-epoxy components on the interface adhesion was measured by the determination of adhesion parameterb, which was compared to the reference epoxy (REF). The increase of adhesion parameterbwas 77.5% for A and 151.5% for B. The adhesion of both eco-adhesives was tested using the bell peel test (BPT) with the Al and CFRP adherends. When compared to REF, the average peel load for B was 17.6% (39.3%) and 58.3% (176.9%) higher for the Al and CFRP adherends, respectively. Complete adhesion failure of REF reflected the weak adhesion to both Al and CFRP, which was improved by the addition of eco-epoxy components A and B showing the presence of cohesive failure. The microhardness testing method of interface adhesion was proven to be a fast and reliable testing method, providing a qualitative indication in adhesive selection.

AB - Composite materials based on acrylate UV-cured polymers (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as a matrix and reinforcements that can be selected in order to adjust the properties of the obtained composite are used in the field of dental technology. The role of reinforcement is to adjust the mechanical properties, but also to control the shrinkage during curing. As reinforcement, alumina particles doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) synthesized using the sol-gel technique were selected. In order to simulate the process of adhesive application in real conditions, in vitro testing technique and adhesion properties of synthesized adhesive were used, where tooth tissue was used as a substrate. Comparison with standard adhesives used in dentistry was used to compare adhesion. The quality of the adhesive joint was evaluated using the microhardness testing method using different loads where it is estimated how the adhesive makes a connection with the substrate. It was shown that the synthesized adhesive showed significantly enhanced adhesion compared to the standard adhesive used in dentistry (836%).

AB - In this work, the optimization of synthesis of terpolymer monolith based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and additional cross-linkers: trimethylolpropanetriacrylate (TMPTA) or triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) was performed. Moreover, novel vinyl functionalized cross-linkable polymers: ethanolamine (EA)/methacryloyl (MAC) modified poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and hydrolyzed poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVOH) modified with MAC either directly or via ethyl malonyl chloride/EA bridging group (m-EVA) were used as cross-linkable polymer to improve mechanical/elastic properties of the obtained monoliths. Optimization procedure, performed applying response surface methodology (RSM), was focused on the production of materials with improved dimensional stability/integrity and porosity with abundance of epoxide groups capable for immobilization of lipase from Candida rugosa (CRL). Structural characterization of the synthesized monoliths was determined using FTIR, Raman and H-1 NMR spectroscopies, while morphology/porosity was determined by SEM technique and image analysis; and mechanical properties by diametral compression testing. The most potential monolith containing m-EVA polymeric cross-linker, i.e. GMA/EGDMA/TEGDMA/m-EVA monolith, was used as CRL carrier in a two-step immobilization process. Enzyme loading and the activity of obtained preparations for various initial enzyme concentrations were monitored after 4 and 48 h of immobilization. The resulting catalysts show high potency in biocatalytic reactions with the highest percentage of retained initial lipase activity of 64.5%.

AB - Commercial gamma - Al2O3 particles, Al2O3 n, and synthesized Al2O3 doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) were used as reinforcements to enhance the toughness of an unsaturated polyester resin (UPR). Alumina modification with vinyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-VT, and methacryloyl, Al2O3 (n, Fe)-ME functionalities contributed to the increase in the extent of covalent binding at the UPR/filler interface. Tensile tests showed a slight improvement in the toughness of UPR/Al2O3 Fe composite and a significant improvement for the UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT composite at a 1.0 wt.% particle loading. An enhancement in the micro Vickers hardness for UPR/Al2O3 Fe-VT and improved DMA properties were also evidenced.

AB - The adsorption performance of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) alumina doped with iron oxide, and subsequently modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, was used for enhanced Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ removal. The phase composition and the structural and surface/textural properties of the obtained adsorbents were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetry, Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area of the samples and point of zero charge determination. Adsorption of selected cations was examined in the batch conditions using different contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperatures. Different models of the adsorption isotherms were used for determination of the adsorption capacities, in which the best fit of Freundlich and Langmuir model was obtained for FeAl2O3, that is, Freundlich model for FeAl(2)O(3)APTES. A significant increase of adsorption capacities: from 44.21 to 51.66 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, 25.69 to 32.96 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 19.48 to 24.64 mg g(-1) for Ni2+ was obtained for FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, respectively, which indicated the significance of the macroporous structure of 3DOM alumina and subsequent amino-terminal modification. The values of the correlation coefficient (R-2) suggested that pseudo-second kinetic model best describes Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption on FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, and Cd2+ and Ni2+ onto FeAl2O3, while second kinetic model gave the highest correlation coefficients for Pb2+ adsorption on FeAl2O3.

AB - Using adhesives for connection technology has many benefits. It is cost-efficient, fast, and allows homogeneous stress distribution between the bonded surfaces. This paper gives an overview on the current state of knowledge regarding the technologically important area of adhesive materials, as well as on emergent related technologies. It is expected to fill some of the technological gaps between the existing literature and industrial reality, by focusing at opportunities and challenges in the adhesives sector, on sustainable and eco-friendly chemistries that enable bio-derived adhesives, recycling and debonding, as well as giving a brief overview on the surface treatment approaches involved in the adhesive application process, with major focus on metal and polymer matrix composites. Finally, some thoughts on the connection between research and development (R&D) efforts, industry standards and regulatory aspects are given. It contributes to bridge the gap between industry and research institutes/academy. Examples from the aeronautics industry are often used since many technological advances in this industry are innovation precursors for other industries. This paper is mainly addressed to chemists, materials scientists, materials engineers, and decision-makers.
