AB - Using ionizing radiation in treating waste sludge from a drinking water treatment plant is a well-known technique. Sludge treated with ionizing radiation can be used as fertilizer in agriculture. In this paper, the effects of aging on the physicochemical characteristics, the content of microorganisms, molds, acrylamide, heavy metal concentration, and total nutrient content in waste sludge treated with e-beam and gamma irradiation were investigated. The possibility of using treated sludge as a fertilizer in agriculture was evaluated. It has been shown that the content of acrylamide in treated sludge after 15 months of storage does not exceed the limits for sludge to be used as fertilizer. If the sludge is stored in closed bags in a dark place, aging does not increase total microorganisms and molds. The research also showed that the sludge's physicochemical characteristics treated in this way do not decrease under the influence of aging. Finally, it has been shown that aging does not change the concentration of heavy metals and total nutrients in sludge treated by ionizing irradiation.

AB - An increasing production of drinking water and a significant amount of waste in the form of treated sludge can lead to a serious environmental problem. The high organic content in the sludge, together with the high summer temperatures, results in the enhanced activity of sludge microorganisms, causing severe can cause serious biological pollution. Also, there is a danger due to the potential presence of polyacrylamide, which is very harmful to human health and the environment. In this paper, the influence of different types of ionizing radiation (gamma and e-beam) on microorganisms inactivation in waste sludge from drinking water treatment plants was investigated. The content of heavy metals and polyacrylamide before and after irradiation was determined. It was concluded that the content of heavy metals in the waste sludge obtained from the drinking water treatment plant is significantly lower than the limit values. The concentration of acrylamide, both before and after irradiation, was limit value for sludge to be used as fertilizer. It was found that the dose of 25 kGy inactivates all pathogens in all samples collected directly after coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation and that the dose of 10 kGy is sufficient to inactivate all pathogens from dewatered samples previously treated with lime. In both cases, the number of microorganisms decreases sharply with increasing radiation dose.

AB - The main objective of the present study was to model the kinetics of essential oil extraction from swelled ground juniper berries by classic hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD). A new phenomenological kinetic model was developed on the basis of the juniper essential oil extraction mechanism that assumed three mass transfer processes occurring simultaneously: washing, unhindered diffusion and hindered diffusion. The new model was compared to the existing kinetic models. Among the tested models, the new model had the smallest mean relative percentage deviation and the highest corrected Akaike information criterion value. In addition, that, the new model was verified for HD and MAHD of essential oils from some other plant materials. On the basis of the above-mentioned facts, the new model can be recommended for modeling the kinetics of essential oil extraction by both HD and MAHD.

AB - This study focuses on the use of raw fly ash (FA) and modified fly ash - activated by lime (MFA), as effective and low-cost adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals (Zn2+, Pb2+ and As(V)), followed by the revalorization of the exhausted adsorbent. The granulometric, elemental analysis, point of zero charge (pH(pzc), radiochemical and structural characterization were conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and gamma spectrometry techniques. The optimal conditions and key factors influencing the adsorption process were assessed using the response surface method (RSM). The adsorption capacity of the MFA adsorbent for Zn2+, Pb2+ and As(V) removal, calculated by the Langmuir model, was found to be 33.13, 26.06, and 29.71 mg g(-1), respectively. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Due to their low desorption potential of the exhausted adsorbents, their effective reuse was established to be feasible. For this reason, the valorization of this material as an additive in construction materials was thereafter studied, where testing its toxicity leaching (TCLP) as well as the mechanical properties of construction material containing exhausted MFA confirmed its safe use. Hence, this study points to a possible "two-in-one" reuse of coal ash, initially as an adsorbent and later as an additive in a construction material.

AB - The present paper dealt with the influence of the common juniper berries pretreatment on the yield, chemical composition and extraction kinetics of juniper essential oil (JEO) obtained by classical (HD) and microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD). The highest JEO yield was obtained by HD from one-minute dry-ground juniper berries (2.23 +/- 0.00 g/100 g). No statistically significant influence of swelling and distillation technique on JEO yield was observed. Therefore, the optimal pretreatment process involved no swelling and one-minute grinding. However, no significant difference in the chemical composition of the JEOs obtained by the two techniques was observed. A new phenomenological kinetic model was developed on the basis of the mechanism of JEO extraction by both HD MAHD, which assumed three simultaneously-occurring stages: washing, unhindered diffusion and hindered diffusion. The main advantage of developed model was its ability to describe the variations of JEO yield and distillation rates with time. Furthermore, it had the smallest mean relative percentage deviation compared to the well-known kinetics models and the parameters that all were statistically significant, so it was recommended for modeling the kinetics of JEO extraction by HD and especially MAHD.

AB - This paper deals with fractionation of the essential oil from juniper (Juniperus communis L.) berries by hydrodistillation (HD) and simultaneous hydrodistillation and rectification (SHDR) at atmospheric pressure. A rectification column was filled with the NORMAG packing A type and had 36 theoretical stages. In the present study, higher essential oil yield was obtained by HD (1.34 mass %) than by SHDR (1.17 mass %). However, mass fraction distributions of monoterpene hydrocarbons (MHs), oxygenated monoterpenes (OMs) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SHs), observed for the two separation methods, differed from each other. In the SHDR process increased contents of high volatile components (predominantly MHs) were obtained in the initial fractions as well as increased contents of low volatile components (dominantly SHs) in the last fractions. Also, this method increased the separation degree of OMs.

AB - Essential oils are aromatic, volatile, complex mixtures of various compounds, mainly hydrocarbons (monoterpene and sesquiterpene) and some oxygenated hydrocarbons. Juniper berry essential oil has wide application and high commercial value due to its considerable antimicrobial activities. It is used in medicine, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and veterinary medicine. Generally, it is obtained by hydrodistillation, technique for the extraction of substances which do not mix or mix very poorly with water and are unstable at their boiling temperatures. It provides high quality of essential oil and also represents a relatively simple, safe and environmentally friendly process. The variations in the chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from juniper berries at various distillation rates (3, 6 and 8 ml/min) and various mass ratio juniper berries-water (hydromodules -1:3, 1: 4 and 1: 5) are presented in this paper. It is important to emphasize that the variations made influence only in quantitative (mass%), but not in qualitative chemical composition (no differences, same 58 components were detected in all experiments). To reflect those effects, only 23 identified components with the content higher than 0.5 mass% were selected, constituted 95-96 mass% of the essential oils. The major constituents of the essential oils were monoterpenes (67.39-71.00 mass%), followed by sesquiterpenes (21.64-24.54 mass%), while the oxygenated monoterpene (1.54-2.42 mas.%) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (0.89-1.46 mass%) were much less present. According to volatility, the high volatile (boiling point 153-167 degrees C) components are the main constituents of the essential oils (61.69-63.81 mass%), followed by the low volatile (boiling point 252-288 degrees C) components (22.57-26.04 mass%), and the least present medium volatile (boiling point 173-212 degrees C) components (7.24-9.61 mass%). The variations in the mass content of the essential oil at various distillation rates showed clear general trends for all hydromodules (with exceptions at some components). With the increasing of distillation rate, mass% of high and medium volatile components decreased, while mass% of low volatile components increased. This is caused by higher extraction of low volatile components at high distillation rate, which resulted the increasing of their mass%. The variations in the mass composition of the essential oil at various hydromodules showed less expressive trends for all distillation rates. That means it has much less influence on the mass composition than the variation of distillation rate. Therefore, experiments at various distillation rates should be continued in combination with the fractionation of the essential oil by simultaneous hydrodistillation and rectification, including the effects of preparation procedures of juniper berries and defining of optimal energy consumption, i.e., optimal time period of hydrodistillation.

AB - BACKGROUNDMicrowave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) has widely been used to isolate essential oil from various plant materials, but it has not been applied yet to extract essential oil from juniper berries. The main goals of the present work were to establish a model describing the extraction kinetics and the chemical composition of the essential oil obtained. RESULTSA lower final essential oil yield from juniper berries was obtained by MAHD than by conventional hydrodistillation (HD). No significant differences in chemical compositions of the essential oils extracted by the two techniques were observed. The mechanism of both processes was the same and included fast (washing) and slow (diffusion) distillation of essential oil that occurred simultaneously. CONCLUSIONThe kinetic model involving simultaneous washing and diffusion of essential oil was verified for various plant materials (areal parts of savory and thyme, fennel seeds and juniper berries) for both MAHD and HD that indicated its general importance. For the first time, the kinetic models of MAHD and HD were compared. Knowledge of the juniper berry essential oil yield and the extraction kinetics is of importance from the technological and economics points of view, while the chemical composition determines its use.

The conventional hydrodistillation by electrical heating (HD) has been improved by involving microwave irradiation for heating − microwave−assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD). HD and MAHD of the juniper berry essential oil from juniper berries were studied at different distillation rates. Both HD and MAHD occurred by the same mechanism that included „fast” (washing) and „slow” (diffusion) distillation phase. Among three models, the model including simultaneous washing and diffusion is the best one for both HD and MAHD of juniper berry essential oil, since it had the lowest mean relative deviation. This kinetic model also appears to be of a general importance as being verified for various plant materials. Higher essential oil yields were obtained by HD than by MAHD. No difference in the a qualitative chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by both techniques was observed, but they had the influence on a quantitative chemical composition (variation of mass fractions), lower for high volatile components, medium for low volatile components and higher for medium volatile components. Essential oil yields increased with increase of distillation rate at all mass ratios juniper berries−water (hydromodules). With increase of hydromodule, yields were constant at low distillation rate, while they decreeased at higher distillation rates. The variations of distillation rate and hydromodule had the influence only on a quantitative chemical composition, but not on a qualitative chemical composition of essentialoil...

AB - The present work deals with the modeling of the kinetics of essential oils extraction from plant materials by water and steam distillation. The experimental data were obtained by studying the hydrodistillation kinetics of essential oil from juniper berries. The literature data on the kinetics of essential oils hydrodistillation from different plant materials were also included into the modeling. A physical model based on simultaneous washing and diffusion of essential oil from plant materials were developed to describe the kinetics of essential oils hydrodistillation, and two other simpler models were derived from this physical model assuming either instantaneous washing followed by diffusion or diffusion with no washing (i.e., first-order kinetics). The main goal was to compare these models and suggest the optimum ones for water and steam distillation and for different plant materials. All three models described well the experimental kinetic data on water distillation irrespective of the type of distillation equipment and its scale, the type of plant materials and the operational conditions. The most applicable model is the one involving simultaneous washing and diffusion of the essential oil. However, this model was generally inapplicable for steam distillation of essential oils, except for juniper berries. For this hydrodistillation technique, the pseudo first-order model was shown to be the best one. In a few cases, a variation of the essential oil yield with time was observed to be sigmoidal and was modeled by the Boltzmann sigmoid function.

AB - The sorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Sr2+ ions from aqueous solutions by carbonate-substituted calcium hydroxyapatite (HAP) obtained by the hydrothermal decomposition of urea and calcium-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid chelates was investigated. The shift of the point of zero charge (pH(pzc)) of HAP toward lower pH values in solutions of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions, which was more pronounced for Pb2+ ions than for Cd2+ ions, indicates that specific adsorption of these cations on HAP had occurred. There was no shift of the pH(pzc) in the solution containing Sr2+ ions, suggesting that specific adsorption of this cation on HAP had not occurred. The sorption isotherms suggest that the sequence of the efficiency of sorption by HAP is Pb2+ gt Cd2+ gt Sr2+. Ion exchange is the main mechanism of removal of Sr2+ ions from aqueous solution by apatite, whereas during the sorption of Cd2+ ions, this mechanism occurs simultaneously with the process of specific adsorption. The interaction of the apatite with Pb2+ ions includes the previously mentioned mechanisms and dissolution of the apatite, followed by the precipitation of lead hydroxyapatite.

AB - The osmotic coefficients of the mixed electrolyte solution {y Na2SO4 + (1 - y)ZnSO4} (aq) have been measured by the isopiestic method, at T = 298.5 K. The experimental results were treated by Scatchard's, Pitzer-Kim's and Clegg-Pitzer-Brimblecombe's methods for mixed-electrolyte solutions. By these methods, the activity coefficients for Na2SO4 and ZnSO4 were calculated and compared. The Scatchard interaction parameters are used for calculation of the excess Gibbs free energy as a function of ionic strength and ionic-strength fraction of Na2SO4. Also, the Zdanovskii's rule of linearity is tested.

AB - Serbia is facing a tremendous challenge with respect of development of appropriate waste management infrastructure to modern European standards. The priorities are: Stop dumping - Increase collection coverage - Move to controlled disposal, - Build sanitary landfills - Dumpsite remediation, identification, prioritization Improve reuse and recycling - Segregated collection - Stimulate development of recycling facilities Improve hazardous waste management - Segregation of industrial hazardous waste - Segregation of healthcare wastes - Development of treatment and disposal facilities; Integrated/strategic/cooperative approach - There is no single solution.

AB - The osmotic coefficients of the mixed electrolyte solution {yNaH(2)PO(4) + (1 - y)Na2SO4}(aq) have been measured by the isopiestic method, at the temperature T = 298.15 K. The activity coefficients of NaH2PO4 and Na2SO4 were calculated by Scatchard's neutral-electrolyte method and by Pitzer and Kim's treatment for mixed-electrolyte solutions. The Scatchard interaction parameters are used for calculation of the excess Gibbs energy as a function of ionic strength and ionic-strength fraction of NaH2PO4. Also, the Zdanovskii's rule of linearity is tested.
