AB - Composite materials based on UV-curing acrylates and various alumina-based reinforcements represent material that is suitable for the use in dentistry, but also in other areas. Composites were made using four different types of reinforcement of chemically very similar compositions, but different size and morphologies. In order to monitor the mechanical properties of the composite material, samples were made in the form of discs of defined dimensions suitable for polymerization under UV light. The subject of this study is the examination of the mechanical properties of the Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate)/TEGDMA (trimethylene glycol dimethacrylate) photopolymer composite material as a matrix. The reinforcements were in the form of commercial nanoparticles and alumina whiskers and their influence on mechanical properties were compared with the influence of synthesized alumina particles doped with iron oxide synthesized sol-gel technique. In order to test the mechanical properties of composite materials, the Brazilian Tests and the testing of the microhardness of samples were employed.

AB - The subject of this study is the quantitative adhesion of a UV-curing composite film based on Bis-GMA (Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate) / TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) as a matrix and particles doped with ferrous oxide on a metal substrate. Two different metal substrates: silver and gold-spattered brass with nickel intermediate coating were used in adhesion evaluating. Adhesion was measured using micro-identation and it was compared with the measured wetting angle of composites to the substrate. It has been shown that the substrates, although with similar mechanical properties that are reflected in very close hardness values, differ by achieved adhesive bonding with the polymer UV-cured polymer film. The addition of ceramic particles in the polymer matrix increased the adhesion of the composite film to both substrates, but the adhesion trend was dependent on the substrate type.

AB - A thermoplastic pultrusion process was examined using commercial fiber roving of PET/E glass, to determine the optimum pulling speed and optimal zonal temperatures. Finite element analysis predicted heat transfer through the commingled fibers and air in the pultrusion die. The cross-section of obtained rods was examined, and image analysis was carried out to obtain information about the degree of fiber impregnation, number of voids and uniformity of fiber distribution. Optimizing the temperature field for the pultrusion of poly (ethylene terephthalate) is of significant importance. The pulling speed has the same importance. These two parameters are closely related as evidenced by the analysis of images.

AB - In this paper, the impact of wood fiber surface modification on mechanical properties of poly-(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)-wood composite was examined. FTIR analysis has shown that the wood fiber surface modification was accomplished and that the matrix-fiber bond was established. The SEM image of the breakage surface has affirmed the improved adhesion between the fibers and the polymer in the specimen with modified wood fibers. The bond improvement between the wood fibers and the matrix results in increased hardness and a better distribution of strain within the composite. High speed impact testing results have shown that the specimen with the bonding agent can increase the absorbed energy six times when compared to the pure PMMA specimen.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of current density, temperature, pH and concentration of ethyl-hexilsulfonate additive on the microhardness of electrochemically deposited gold decorative coatings obtained from a conventional cyanide electrolyte and gold complex based on mercaptotriazole. Mechanically and chemically prepared brass samples were first nickeled from acidic electrolyte. Nickel was a substrate deposit, and then decorative gold coatings were deposited from two types of electrolytes at different current densities and temperatures. Decorative gold coatings were deposited from auri-mercaptotrizole at different pH values and from electrolyte with and without the ethylhexilsulfonate additive. The microhardness of the gold coating was measured using the Knoop method. The highest values of microhardness were obtained at a current density of 1 A dm(-2) at room temperature for both electrolytes. The microhardness of the gold coatings from cyanide electrolytes was HK = 740 MPa, and the coatings obtained from auri-mercaptotriazole HK = 660 MPa. This difference is not relevant for decorative purposes. The highest values of microhardness, HK = 660 MPa, were obtained at pH = 9 from the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole without the additive.

The microhardness of the gold coatings from cyanide electrolytes was HK = 740 MPa, and the coatings obtained from auri-mercaptotriazole HK = 660 MPa. This difference is not relevant for decorative purposes. The highest values of microhardness, HK = 660 MPa, were obtained at pH = 9 from the gold complex based on mercaptotriazole without the additive.",

AB - The surface defects on the samples, which are based on alumina, exposed to thermal shocks and cavitations erosion were analyzed using image analysis. For both types of experimental testing, the samples are made of the same shape and size. The specimens contain different amounts of alumina fibers (samples without fiber and with of 1 and 2 wt.% of the fibers). The surface defects were characterized by their morphological parameters determined using image analysis procedure. Sixteen parameters are used for the image analysis. The results show that the damage caused by thermal shocks and cavitations were different and the greatest difference was in roundness and fractal dimension.

AB - The mathematical model for heat transfer during the Bridgeman crystal growth, using the finite element method and the obtained result are presented. Some modifications to the method were introduced in order to incorporate the data obtained experimentally. Solving the model enabled comparison of the experimental and numerical data and to obtain sufficient accuracy. The model was used to calculate the temperature gradient in the sample and the calculated gradient was in accordance with the observed crystal growth regime.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of temperature on the thickness, surface roughness, visual appearance and morphology of electrochemically deposited gold decorative coatings obtained from conventional cyanide electrolyte (AUROCIN DPB) and electrolyte based on mercaptotriazole (Au-MT). Heating of cyanide electrolyte does not significantly affect the thickness (b) of gold coatings (at 20 degrees C b = 0.08 mu m, at 30 degrees C b = 0.07 mu m and at 40 degrees C b = 0.08 mu m) and, for this reason, the decorative coating processes were carried out at room temperature. Temperature increase has a positive effect on thickness of decorative gold coatings obtained from electrolyte based on mercaptotriazole, but this effect is very small, so the heating of electrolyte is not recommended for this type of electrolyte (at 20 degrees C b = 0.08 mu m, at 40 degrees C b = 0.12 mu m and at 60 degrees C b = 0.13 mu m). The best coating roughness profiles are obtained at a temperature of 20 degrees C for both types of electrolyte. The morphology of gold deposits, obtained from both electrolytes, was studied using scanning electron microscopy.
