AB - The preparation of zeolite rich polymeric materials presents a challenge due to the zeolite settling
during synthesis, poor miscibility, the phase separation and generally insufficient interactions
between polymers and zeolites. Combination of LTA, i.e. MFI, zeolite and poly(methacrylic acid) in the
form of soft hydrogel network provided the stabilization of the zeolite particles and enabled synthesis
of composite hydrogels with very high zeolite concentrations (26-52 mass%).
The investigated morphological, mechanical and primary structural properties, water swelling ability
and thermal stability revealed high dependence on zeolite concentration and type. Zeolite particles
were uniformly dispersed in PMAA matrix as confirmed by SEM and there was no agglomeration or
zeolite leaching despite very high concentrations. FTIR spectra disclosed the existence of functional
groups of PMAA network and both zeolite types that interacted mutually and led to increased
crosslinking density. The established interactions changed the PMAA chain dynamics around the
particles, especially of the LTA type, as showed by XRD. Having much more surface groups capable to
generate interaction with PMAA, LTA zeolite stronger affected all of the investigated properties.
Composites’ mechanics was improved both in dry and swollen state compared to the PMAA hydrogel
(up to 21.8 times for the sample with the highest LTA concentration). Thermal stability of the
composites increased with increasing zeolite concentration.
The composition-property correlations were determined making this work the base for further
development of tailor-made zeolite-PMAA composite hydrogels aimed for specific application.
Composites were tested as low-cost, regenerative, environmentally friendly sorbents and showed
better removal of cationic dye compared to both components (PMAA and zeolite) alone.

AB - Composite hydrogels are the subject of intensive research due to there specific 3D cross-linked
structure with extraordinary physical and chemical properties which enables variety of applications In
spite of increasing interest for using different external fields in physical-chemical processes, three are
no available literature data about the effects of external fields on swelling and swelling kinetics of
hydrogels. Therefore, the effects of (conventional) thermal (TH), ultrasonic (US) and microwave (MW)
fields, on the swelling degree and swelling kinetics. A sample of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) xerogel
with 10%wt of LTA-zeolite (PMMA-LTA) was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The
isothermal kinetic swelling curves were determined within a temperature range T= 293-323K in the
TH, US and MW fields. The results were well fitted with the Peppas’ kinetic model. At all applied
fields, with an increase in temperature, there is an increase in the equilibrium swelling degree (SDeq)
and the swelling rate constant (k), while the parameter of Pepass's model (n) decreases. The maximum
value of SDeq and parameter n is achieved at TH, while the US assisted process leads to the maximum
value of k. The minimum value of the activation energy (Ea) and at the same time the maximum value
of the pre-exponential factor (lnA) lnA were achieved by applying the MW field. The influence of US
and MW fields on the diffusion of water molecules through the polymer network, activation of the
polymer network for swelling and relaxation of the polymer network was analysed.

AB - Hydrogels are 3D cross-linked structures that, due to their unique physical and chemical properties and
possible applications, are the subject of intensive research in recent decades. In this work, the effects of
external physical fields (ultrasonic (US) and microwave (MW)) on the isothermal swelling kinetics of
poly(methacrylic acid) hydrogel were examined. A sample of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) xerogel (PMMAX) was synthesized by the process of cross-linking free radical polymerization, which is described in detail in
the paper [1]. The basic primary structural properties of PMMA-X including the equilibrium swelling degree
in distilled water (SDeq), the density of xerogel (ρxg), the average molar mass between the crosslinks of a
network (Mc), the degree of crosslinking (ρc) and the distance between the macromolecular chains (ξ), were
determined and calculated. The isothermal kinetic swelling curves were determined by the tee-bag method at
a temperature range of T= 293-323K in the presence of thermal, ultrasonic, and microwave fields. The
isothermal kinetic curves of swelling were fitted with the Peppas’ kinetic model [2]. The values of the
isothermal kinetic parameters of the Peppas model (k, n) were calculated. Based on the temperature
dependence of the parameter using the Arrhenius equation, all values of the activation energy (Ea) and the
pre-exponential factor (lnA) of the swelling process in the presence of different physical fields were calculated.
The obtained results indicate that the presence of US and MW fields leads to an increase in the values of k, n,
Ea, and compared to the corresponding values during conventional heating. The US field relatively slightly
increases the value of SDeq, while the MW field significantly reduces the value of SDeq. The values of Ea and
lnA at different physical fields are interrelated by a correlation relationship (compensation effect) which is
given by the relation: lnAf=0.326+0.406Ea, f The existence of a compensation effect [3] is an indication of the
unique mechanism of activation of the polymer network at different physical fields for swelling and of the
quantum nature of Ea. The influence of US and MW fields on the diffusion of water molecules through the
polymer network, activation of the polymer network for swelling, and relaxation of the polymer network was
analyzed.

AB - In recent years, versatile peroxidase (VP) has emerged as a promising enzyme for biotechnological applications, as it can oxidize lignin without the external mediators. To gain insights into the breakdown process of artificial lignin by VP, reaction between the two was studied. Degradation products were fractionated using ultrafiltration and analyzed by RP- high performance liquid chromatography with mass detection (HPLC-MS) chromatography. Four fractions were obtained based on their molecular sizes: >10, 3–10, 1–3, and <1 kDa. Interestingly, while VP did not significantly alter the yields of these fractions, the chromatograms revealed the presence of oligomers with different molecular weights (MWs) resulting from the enzymatic activity. The VP exhibits a dual role in its enzymatic activity: both degrading and synthesizing these oligomers. This was confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA). The positive correlations were found between certain oligomers (D1 and D2, D5 and D6, as well as between D7, D10, T2, and T4), suggesting their simultaneous degradation. On the other hand, a negative correlation was found between the monomer and some oligomers (D7, D10, T2, and T4), indicating the decomposition of these oligomers into monomers. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between VP and artificial lignin, offering valuable insights for potential applications in lignin valorization.

AB - The effects of heating mode (conventional and microwave) on the kinetics of isothermal polymerization of MMA composite materials were investigated. Isothermal kinetics curves at temperature range from 343 K to 363 K for both conventional (CH) and microwave heating (MWH) were determined. It was found that the polymerization of MMA composite materials was kinetically elementary reaction for both CH and MWH. The kinetics of CH polymerization can be described by the model of phase-boundary controlled process (contracting volume), whereas the kinetics of MWH polymerization can be described by the model of first-order chemical reaction. The kinetics parameters (E-a and In A) of the polymerization under microwave heating are lower than for conventional heating. The established decreases in the activation energy and pre-exponential factor under the MWH compared to the CH is explained with the increase in the energy of ground vibrational level of the C-O valence vibrations (v = 987 cm(-1)) in methyl methacrylate molecule and with the decrease in its anharmonicity factor which is caused with the selective resonant transfer of energy from the energetic reservoir to the oscillators in methyl methacrylate molecules.

AB - The effects of heating mode (conventional isothermal heating (CIH) and microwave isothermal heating (MWIH) on the kinetics of polymerization and the properties important for the application (residual monomer, hardness, and water absorption) of three commercial poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) base dental materials were investigated. The degree of monomer conversion was determined by infrared spectrometry. The hardness of the polymerized samples was measured by shore D method, whereas the water absorption was measured gravimetrically. Kinetics models for polymerizations using different heating modes were determined by model fitting method. The rate of the MWIH polymerization was eight times higher compared with the CIH polymerization. The CIH polymerization is found to be the phase-boundary controlled reaction for which the rate of contracting volume is the rate limiting step, whereas MWIH polymerization is found to be the first-order reaction and the monomer concentration in the polymerization mixture is the rate limiting step. The samples of PMMA base dental materials synthesized by MWIH polymerization exhibit better application properties (hardness and water absorption).
