AB - Inorganic arsenic removal from water using low-cost adsorbents is presented in this paper. Selective removal of As(III) and As(V) from water was performed with natural materials (zeolite, bentonite, sepiolite, pyrolusite and limonite) and industrial by-products (waste filter sand as a water treatment residual and blast furnace slag from steel production); all inexpensive and locally available. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were realized using batch system techniques under conditions that are likely to occur in real water treatment systems. The natural zeolite and the industrial by-products were found to be good and inexpensive sorbents for arsenic while bentonite and sepiolite clays showed little affinity towards arsenic. The highest maximum sorption capacities were obtained for natural zeolite, 4.07 mg As(V) g-1, and waste iron slag, 4.04 mg As(V) g-1.

AB - Copper melting and refining include consumption of significant quantities of almost all kinds of conventional energents. Consumption is high in nominal as well as in specific form. This paper presents the analysis of energent consumption on concrete example of unique and only one Copper Melting and Refining Plant in Bor, Serbia, for the 7-year-period, divided in two periods good (1996-1998.) and bad (1999-2002), compared with referent year (1999). To get more detailed analysis, all energents were reduced to conditional fuel (coal equivalent). In the process of electrical enemy reduction to energy equivalent, we used the value of 0.54 for recovery level of energetic system of Republic of Serbia. Taking into account that energents participation in total costs on copper line is 35% - 45%, depending on capacity utilization, their well defined position can be of significant importance for increasing profit.

AB - Bentonite samples collected from vicinity of Petrovac and Aleksinac were treated with different sulfuric acid molarities. Acid attack dissolved the octahedral sheets by interlayer and edge attack. The effects of the H2SO4 acid caused an exchange of Al3+, Fe3+ and Mg2+ with H. ions leading to a modification of the smectite crystalline structure. The Mg and Fe substitution in the octahedral sheets promoted the dispersion of corresponding layers and formation of amorphous silicon. The activated bentonites, after the treatment of sulfuric acid, exhibited a lower cation-exchange capacity (CEC)and significant increase of specific surface area from 6 to 387 m(2) g(-1) (bentonite from Petrovac) and from 11 to 306 m(2) g(-1) (bentonite from Aleksinac). The acid reaction caused a splitting of particles within the octahedral sheet which led to an increase in specific surface area and decrease in CEC in both bentonites.

AB - A reliable model for the prediction of the heat of vaporization for n-alkanes at 298.15 K with the number of carbon atoms and normal boiling point as the only input parameters is recommended. The new model is compared with other literature models and was found to give the best results with absolute mean percentage deviation of 0.81 % and maximum absolute percentage deviation of 2.93 %.

AB - This paper describes the development of novel, reactive Al-Au nano-multilayered foils, their possible application in different fields and a discussion of the nano-foils' suitability for dental and jewellery applications. Moreover, this study includes the rapid joining of similar and dissimilar materials, by placing multilayer nano-foils and two layers of solder or braze. The foils precisely control the instantaneous release of heat energy for the joining and act as a controllable local heat source. The reactive foils' thickness is in the range 10 nm to less than 100 nm and they contain many nanoscale layers that alternate between materials with high mixing heats, such as Al and Au. The foil between the two solder/braze layers melts the solder/braze with the heat generated by the reaction and bonds the components. The use of reactive foils eliminates the need for a furnace and dramatically increases the soldering/brazing heating rate of the components being bonded. Thus, ceramics and metals can be fused over required areas without the thermal stresses that are encountered in furnace soldering or brazing. In addition, a completely new plasma technology is proposed for the manufacturing of nano-foils and the first results of the preliminary experimental testing are presented.

AB - Thermal expansion coefficients, a. excess thermal expansion coefficients, alpha(E), isothermal coefficients of pressure excess molar enthalpy, (partial derivative H(E)/partial derivative p)T(,x), partial molar volumes, (V) over bar (i), partial molar volumes at infinite dilution, (V) over bar (infinity)(i), partial excess molar volumes, (V) over bar (E)(i), and partial excess molar volumes at infinite dilution, (V) over bar (E,infinity)(i), were calculated using experimental densities and excess molar volumes, V(E), data. All calculations are performed for the binary systems of cyclohexylamine with 1-propanol or 1-butanol or 2-butanol or 2-methyl-2-propanol. The Redlich-Kister polynomial and the reduced excess molar volume approach were used in the evaluation of these properties. In addition, the aim of this investigation was to provide a set of various volumetric data in order to asses the influence of temperature, chain length and position of hydroxyl group in the alcohol molecule oil the molecular interactions in the examined binary mixtures.

AB - The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant R-134a in a vertical plate heat exchanger was investigated experimentally. The area of the plate was divided into several segments along the vertical axis. For each of the segments, the local value of the heat transfer coefficient was calculated and presented as a function of the mean vapor quality in the segment. Owing to the thermocouples installed along the plate surface, it was possible to determine the temperature distribution and vapor quality profile inside the plate. The influences of the mass flux, heat flux, pressure of system and the flow configuration on the heat transfer coefficient were also taken into account and a comparison with literature data was performed.
