AB - Maple syrup, a popular natural sweetener has a high content of sucrose, whose consumption is linked to different health issues such as obesity and diabetes. Hence, within this paper, the conversion of sucrose to prebiotics (fructo-oligosaccharides, FOS) was proposed as a promising approach to obtaining a healthier, value-added product. Enzymatic conversion was optimized with respect to key experimental factors, and thereafter derived immobilized preparation of fructosyltransferase (FTase) from Pectinex® Ultra SP-L (FTase-epoxy Purolite, 255 IU/g support) was successfully utilized to produce novel functional product in ten consecutive reaction cycles. The product, obtained under optimal conditions (60 ◦C, 7.65 IU/mL, 12 h), resulted in 56.0% FOS, 16.7% sucrose, and 27.3% monosaccharides of total carbohydrates, leading to a 1.6-fold reduction in caloric content. The obtained products` prebiotic potential toward the probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum 299v was demonstrated. The changes in physico-chemical and sensorial characteristics were esteemed as negligible.

AB - Providing structural information on drug-like compounds is a significant step in efforts to develop innovative drugs with balanced solubility, cell permeability and target binding. In this paper, a new cyclohexane-5-spirohydantoin tethered with a 4‑tert-butylbenzoyl group was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined using the single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Hirshfeld surface analysis was used to gain a preliminary insight into the proportion and nature of the intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure, while their quantitative description is further presented in terms of a systematic analysis of dimeric motifs representing different recognition modes. A combination of N–H∙∙∙O and C(sp3)–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds, C(sp3)–H∙∙∙π, lone-pair∙∙∙π and π∙∙∙π stacking interactions links the molecules into a bilayer having two carbonyl O atoms exposed to the exterior. Further stacking of the bilayers occurs through C(sp3)–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds involving these O atoms as acceptors, C(sp3)–H∙∙∙π and π∙∙∙π stacking interactions between the phenyl groups. The molecular electrostatic potential surface map reveals that the carbonyl O atoms of the hydantoin ring and the phenyl ring are electrophilic centers, while the N1–H1 group is a nucleophilic center. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies were used to semiquantitatively estimate the global reactivity descriptors suggesting the soft nature of the molecule.

AB - Three novel triphenyltin(IV) compounds with modulated azo-carboxylato ligands: triphenylstannyl (E)-4-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)diazenyl)benzoate, 1, triphenylstannyl (E)-4-((4-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)benzoate, 2, and triphenylstannyl (E)-4-((4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)diazenyl)benzoate, 3, were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR and NMR (1H, 13C, 119Sn) spectroscopy. The structures and spectra of compounds were predicted by Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods at B3LYP-D3BJ/6–311++G(d,p)(H,C,N,O)/LanL2DZ(Sn) level of theory. Furthermore, the antitumor potential of ligand precursors, HL1–HL3, and appropriate organotin(IV) compounds 1–3 was evaluated across mouse melanoma B16F1, human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7, human colorectal HT-29 and human prostate PC3 cell lines using MTT and CV assays. The organotin(IV) compounds exhibit enhanced cellular uptake and efficacy in reducing viable cell numbers when compared to free acids. Specifically, compound 3 demonstrates a notable impact at lower nanomolar concentrations on all tested cell lines. Moreover, 3 induces cell death in MCF-7 cells by inhibiting cell division and promoting the overproduction of cellular nitric oxide (NO), ultimately leading to caspase-independent apoptosis. Importantly, this process occurs without concurrent activation of autophagy or the generation of ROS/RNS species. The binding affinity of 1–3 with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular docking simulations, suggesting their capacity to interact with these biomolecules.

AB - This study focuses on the development of bioactive materials using environmentally friendly techniques, renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable polysaccharide, as well as natural bioactive compounds (NBCs) found in plant extracts. First, cornstarch aerogels with a porosity of 86 % and a specific surface area of 225 m2/g were produced via supercritical CO2- assisted drying. Further, thymol, citronellol, carvacrol, and eugenol were incorporated into the aerogels by supercritical CO2- assisted impregnation, which allowed variation in loadings of NBCs (12.8–17.6 %). Interaction between cornstarch aerogels and NBCs determined impregnation rate, pore wall thickness (in the range 18–95 nm), liquid absorption capacity (from 265 to 569 %), dehydration mass loss, and release in phosphate-buffered saline. Controlled release of NBCs was maintained over a 3-day period. Moreover, impregnated aerogels showed a significant antioxidant effect with the highest value for DPPH radical inhibition of 25.5 % determined for the aerogels impregnated with eugenol. Notable antimicrobial activity against tested Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi was also observed, being the highest for thymol-loaded aerogel with the diameter of the inhibition zones of up to 37.5 mm. This work shows a promising green approach for the production of bioactive two-component starch-based materials for potential applications in skin infection treatment.

AB - Pesticides used in coffee cultivation may remain behind and pose a risk to humans even after various processing stages of coffee beans (washing, drying, roasting, and grinding). In addition to pesticides applied to battle pests and diseases, mepiquat formation occurs during roasting. A comprehensive LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS multi-residue screening approach to determine pesticides in coffee was used in this study. Residues were extracted using the QuEChERS method and analyzed using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass spectrometry after chromatographic separations. Good linearity (r2˃0.9919), recovery (80.2–118%), and RSD (≤19%) were obtained for the procedure including sample preparation and both instrumental techniques. Nine residues were identified as commonly present in coffee samples collected from supermarkets in Serbia. The human intake risk of pesticides was categorized and prioritized using the matrix ranking scheme. Also, health risk assessment was conducted by calculating acute and chronic hazard indices. Multi-residues were present in 79.2% of samples, whereas mepiquat chloride (88.9%) and permethrin (81.9%) were the most detected residues. Risk ranking classified mepiquat chloride, permethrin, and methiocarb sulfone in a high-risk group. On the other hand, the human health risk assessment indicated no risks in the short- and long-term and no cumulative chronic risk.

Multi-residues were present in 79.2% of samples, whereas mepiquat chloride (88.9%) and permethrin (81.9%) were the most detected residues. Risk ranking classified mepiquat chloride, permethrin, and methiocarb sulfone in a high-risk group. On the other hand, the human health risk assessment indicated no risks in the short- and long-term and no cumulative chronic risk.",

AB - This paper outlines a novel simple protocol for tuning the structure and properties of jute using sodium periodate (NaIO4) oxidation and coating with alginate. When compared to the raw jute, fabrics oxidized with a 0.2 or 0.4 % NaIO4 solution for 30–120 min exhibited an increased aldehyde group content (0.185 vs. 0.239–0.398 mmol/g), a significantly increased negative zeta potential (from − 8.57 down to − 20.12 mV), a slight disruption of fiber crystallinity, 15.1–37.5 % and 27.9–49.8 % lower fabric maximum force and stiffness, respectively. Owing to the removal of hydrophobic surface barrier, decreased crystallinity index and the presence of micropores on the
fabrics' surfaces, oxidized fabrics have a 22.3–29.6 % improved ability for moisture sorption compared to raw fabric. Oxidized fabrics characterized by very long wetting times and excellent antioxidant activities (> 98 %), can find applications as hydrophobic packaging materials. To further extend the utilization of jute in biocarpet engineering such as water-binding geo-prebiotic supports, oxidized fabrics were coated with alginate resulting in 7.9–24.9 % higher moisture sorption and 352–660 times lower wetting times than their oxidized counterparts. This modification protocol has never been applied to lignocellulosic fibers and sheds new light on obtaining jute fabrics with tuned structure and properties intended for various applications.

AB - This study present estimation of the thermodynamic parameters and the influence of ionic activity coefficient on the thermodynamic equilibrium constant of adsorption of phosphates on fly ash. The adsorption was conducted over a wide range of initial phosphate concentrations at different pH values pH = (3; 7; 10). The adsorption results were treated using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips adsorption isotherms, which provide information about the maximum adsorption capacity. The Langmuir and Sips isotherms were a satisfactory fit to the adsorption data, especially at pH = 3, with an acceptable regression coefficient over the entire concentration range, Langmuir (r2 = 0.9737) and Sips (r2 = 0.9969). The estimated maximum phosphate sorption capacity of fly ash was 6.21 ± 0.68 (mmol·g−1) according to Langmuir and 4.19 ± 0.16 (mmol·g−1) according to the Sips model, at pH = 3.0. However, there is no data in the published literature for estimating the thermodynamic parameters of the phosphate adsorption process using thermodynamic models for activity coefficients. Novel approach of this paper was determination of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy, using the Pitzer ion-interaction model to predict the nature of adsorption. The Pitzer-ion interaction model was used for the mixed ionic systems, taking into consideration the effect of other present ions besides phosphates in the equilibrium solution resulting from fly ash desorption. The procedure for comprehensive estimation of the ion activity coefficient at maximum adsorption capacity and the dimensionless thermodynamic equilibrium constant using Langmuir's and Sips's constants was presented. The calculated value of the phosphate activity coefficient in the equilibrium solution was γH = 0.7003 ± 0.0027 and the converted molar activity coefficient was γH = 0.6903 ± 0.0027. The estimated values of Gibbs free energy were: ΔGL = −6.788 ± 0.521 kJ·mol−1 based on Langmuir equilibrium constant and ΔGa = −7.707 ± 0.527 kJ·mol−1 based on activity and thermodynamic equilibrium constant. According to Sips model, the adsorption process is even more spontaneous, with the Gibbs free energy calculated using the phosphate activity coefficient and the thermodynamic equilibrium constant, ΔGa = −9.707 ± 0.617 kJ·mol−1. Consideration of the ionic activity coefficient is particularly important for large, charged adsorbates at higher concentrations, as the absolute difference in free energy for adsorption is app. 12 %. The scientific contribution is reflected in obtaining the necessary and more accurate information for the improvement of adsorption processes and possibly for the upgrading of fly ash in overall wastewater treatment technology.

AB - Kevlar fibers are widely used for industrial and military purposes due to their remarkable mechanical properties, such as their high tenacity and high strength-to-weight ratio. In this study, two-layered Kevlar composite specimens were impregnated with 10 wt.% poly (vinyl butyral)/ethanol solution which contained TiO2 nanoparticles as reinforcement. The concentrations of the nanoparticles were 1 wt.% or 2 wt.% with respect to the poly (vinyl butyral), PVB. The single-axial tensile test and three-point bending test of the Kevlar/PVB composites have been performed according to the ASTM D 3039 and ASTM D 790-03 standards, respectively. The tensile and bending properties of the dry and wet Kevlar/PVB composite specimens after a 56-day immersion are examined in this work. Upon the addition of the 2 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles, the tensile strength and modulus of the dry specimens without reinforcement were increased by 39.8% and 24.3%, respectively. All the submerged specimens’ tensile and flexural property values were lower than those of the dry specimens. After comparing the wet composite specimens to their dry counterparts, the percentage decrease in tensile strength was approximately 20%. The wet Kevlar/PVB specimens with no TiO2 reinforcement showed the greatest reduction in bending strength, 61.4% less than for the dry Kevlar/PVB specimens, due to the degradation of the PVB matrix. In addition, a numerical simulation of the three-point bending test was carried out in Abaqus.

AB - Spatial and temporal variability of Copepoda was studied at four stations in the Bay of Boka Kotorska and five stations in the open waters of the South Adriatic Sea in 2008. The research area included three sectors differing in geographical and hydrological conditions: The Bay of Boka Kotorska, the estuary of the Bojana river (both with the typical neritic Copepod fauna), and offshore waters of South Adriatic Sea (with the pelagic species). Four species from the genus Centropages Kröyer, 1849 were registered: C. typicus Kröyer, 1849, C. kröyeri Giesbrecht, 1893, C. violaceus (Claus, 1863) and C. ponticus Karavaev, 1895. Only one of the species, C. typicus, was encountered at all nine stations. By examining the seasonal distribution and abundance of specimens, as well as the ecological properties of the researched area, we observed particular behavioural pattern in distribution and abundance of certain species that had not been described previously. The conclusion is that the seasonal differences in the horizontal distribution are associated with the dynamics of the hydrographic conditions of the South Adriatic Sea. Significant relationships have been reported between C. kröyeri abundance and the temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, and C. typicus abundance and pH factor.

AB - This paper investigates the feasibility of using diethyl adipate (DEA), a green organic solvent, as a separation agent for extracting various alcohols from aqueous solutions. In order to achieve this, liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) experiments were carried out for four ternary systems: {water + methanol + DEA}, {water + ethanol + DEA}, {water + 1-propanol + DEA}, and {water + 2-propanol + DEA} at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. LLE experiments involve determination of certain thermodynamic data such as binodal curves and cloud-point data. Binodal curve data were determined by the cloud-point method using the titration technique, while the tie-line data were determined by optimizing the parameters based on the experimental measurements of the refractive index. Additionally, the distribution coefficients and the separation factors were calculated within the immiscibility region. Hand and Othmer-Tobias correlations were used to examine the reliability of the tie-line data. Also, the experimental ternary LLE data were correlated using the UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC) activity coefficient models. The results confirm that that DEA is a suitable choice for extracting methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol from water. The potential of DEA as a separation agent followed the sequence methanol < ethanol < 2-propanol < 1-propanol. UNIQUAC model proved to be effective in correlating the LLE data.

AB - In this work, we present a two-phase electro-magneto-fluid dynamics (EMFD) model that merges electromagnetics and fluid dynamics. The model is suitable for use in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and was incorporated into OpenFOAM® after deriving appropriate equations that bypassed certain limitations of the software. Currently, there is lack of even single-phase EMFD models that can be incorporated into CFD software; however, simpler models from electrohydrodynamics (EHD) and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are being implemented although they have certain approximations that can limit their applicability. We conclude that the derived EMFD model is applicable, and show its quality by implementing it and analyzing the results. We use cases with a droplet and the electrospinning process for verification. The drop deformations obtained were closer to analytical predictions than in the literature for two EHD models, but some oscillations were observed. We compared one simulation to the prediction of an analytical equation from MHD, and good agreement was shown. Finally, we simulate the electrospinning process, and the results were very close to the analytical predictions. We conclude that the implementation can be used for both EHD and MHD cases.

AB - High concentrations of LTA zeolite (27-52mass%) were embedded in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) matrix to obtain composite hydrogels with porosity and active sites originating from both components. Substandard mechanics of PMAA and aggregation of zeolite particles, were thereby overcome. The composites had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1700 to1400 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (54.8 to1.29 mol m−3) and lower swelling degree (41 to 420 kg kg−1). Zeolite particles were uniformly dispersed in PMAA matrix and there was no agglomeration or leaching of zeolite despite very high concentrations. XRD patterns revealed that the inclusion of zeolite particles affected the short-range order in the PMAA matrix. Being an active filler LTA zeolite notably improved thermal stability and mechanics of PMAA hydrogel, multiplying the storage modulus 5.2 times in dry and 21.8 times in swollen state. Structure–property correlations were provided making the base for further development of tailor-made zeolite-PMAA composite hydrogels.

AB - Fruit pomaces are agro-industrial by-products obtained in large quantities by the juice production industry, hence their reutilization is a suitable way to minimize environmental impact by transforming them into different value-added products. Considering the wide abundance and bioactive potential of berries pomaces, raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant, and chokeberry pomace were chosen to examine and compare polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, and skin prebiotic capacity of their extracts. Extracts of 5.28 to 13.39 mg GAE ⋅ g−1 DM total polyphenol content were obtained, with significant differences in polyphenol abundance between classes. Relative antioxidant capacity index and global antioxidant score revealed that the blackcurrant pomace extract exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity. Staphylococcus epidermidis growth was promoted by lower extract concentrations, while higher concentrations showed inhibitory effects. On the other hand, Staphylococcus aureus was inhibited more strongly and no stimulation was detected in the tested concentration range (.025–.1 mg GAE ⋅ mL−1). In co-cultured experiments, a S. aureus/S. epidermidis rebalancing effect was proven for all tested extracts, whereas the best prebiotic capacity of 2.84 was achieved at.05 mg GAE⋅ mL−1 of raspberry pomace extract. In conclusion, berry pomace extracts could be valorized by extraction of their phytochemicals which are potent antioxidants and emerging prebiotics for topical application.

AB - Population growth, urbanization, industry, floods, and agriculture globally degrade groundwater in river plains, necessitating action for its quality assessment and management. Hence, a comprehensive methodology, including hydrogeochemical facies (Piper, Gibbs), irrigation indices (SAR, Wilcox), entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and Monte Carlo simulation of source-specific health risks was used in this study to analyze groundwater in the Morava river plain (Serbia). The results revealed a prevalent Ca–Mg–HCO3 groundwater type, influenced by water–rock interactions. Although groundwater was found suitable for irrigation, only 66.7 % of the samples were considered drinkable. Agricultural activities, natural processes, and municipal wastewater were identified as primary pollution sources. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) and hazard index (HI) threshold exceedance for adults and children ranged from 8.5 % to 39 % of the samples, with arsenic identified as the most risk-contributing contaminant. These findings provide valuable insights for researchers studying groundwater vulnerability in river plains.

AB - This study proposes synthesis and evaluation of gelatin-/alginate-based hydrogel scaffolds reinforced with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles which, through their combination with allantoin, quercetin, and caffeic acid, provide multi-target therapy directed on all phases of the wound healing process. These scaffolds provide the simultaneous release of bioactive agents and concurrently support cell/tissue repair through the replicated structure of a native extracellular matrix. The hydrogel scaffolds were synthesized via a crosslinking reaction using EDC as a crosslinker for gelatin. Synthesized hydrogel scaffolds and the effect of TiO2 on their properties were characterized by structural, mechanical, morphological, and swelling properties, and the porosity, wettability, adhesion to skin tissue, and simultaneous release features. The biocompatibility of the scaffolds was tested in vitro on fibroblasts (MRC5 cells) and in vivo (Caenorhabditis elegans) in a survival probe. The scaffolds revealed porous interconnected morphology, porosity of 88.33 to 96.76%, elastic modulus of 1.53 to 4.29 MPa, full hydrophilicity, favorable skin adhesivity, and biocompatibility. The simultaneous release was investigated in vitro indicating dependence on the scaffold’s composition and type of bioactive agents. The novel scaffolds designed as multi-target therapy have significant promise for improved wound healing in a beneficial and non-invasive manner.

AB - This study presents an innovative approach for the reuse and recycling of waste material, brewer’s spent grain (BSG) for
creating a novel green biocatalyst. The same BSG was utilized in several consecutive steps: initially, it served as a substrate
for the cultivation and production of laccase by a novel isolated fungal strain, Coriolopsis trogii 2SMKN, then, it was reused
as a carrier for laccase immobilization, aiding in the process of azo dye decolorization and fnally, reused as recycled BSG
for the second successful laccase immobilization for six guaiacol oxidation, contributing to a zero-waste strategy. The novel
fungal strain produced laccase with a maximum activity of 171.4 U/g after 6 days of solid-state fermentation using BSG
as a substrate. The obtained laccase exhibited excellent performance in the decolorization of azo dyes, both as a free and
immobilized, at high temperatures, without addition of harmful mediators, achieving maximum decolorization efciencies
of 99.0%, 71.2%, and 61.0% for Orange G (OG), Congo Red, and Eriochrome Black T (EBT), respectively. The immobilized
laccase on BSG was successfully reused across fve cycles of azo dye decolorization process. Notably, new green biocatalyst
outperformed commercial laccase from Aspergillus spp. in the decolorization of OG and EBT. GC-MS and LC-MS revealed
azo-dye degradation products and decomposition pathway. This analysis was complemented by antimicrobial and phytotoxicity tests, which confrmed the non-toxic nature of the degradation products, indicating the potential for safe environmental
disposal.

AB - This study explores the impact of sodium periodate oxidation time (30min, 60min, or 120min) and alginate coating on the capillarity of jute fabrics. Raw jute fabric exhibits a rapid increase in capillary rise height (h) over time, reaching 72mm at 1200s. Fabrics oxidized for 30, 60, and 120min show significantly lower h values of 19, 18, and 28mm at 1200s, respectively, which can be ascribed to the oxidation process itself. Precisely, oxidation-induced conversion of hydroxyl
groups of cellulose (the main constituent of jute fiber) to aldehyde groups contributed to the fabric reduced affinity for water, hence negatively affecting its capillarity. Approximately 47% and 55% lower h values of fabrics oxidized for 30 and 60min compared to that oxidized for 120min can be explained by their lower weight loss after oxidation as well as less pronounced liberation of elementary fibers. Oxidized fabrics characterized by low capillarity can be used for the manufacturing of packaging materials, outdoor gear, and protective covers for crops. To expand jute fabric applications in biocarpet engineering, that is, to obtain polysaccharide-based supports, raw and oxidized jute fabrics were treated with a 1% sodium alginate solution. At 1200s, oxidized fabrics coated with alginate exhibited 4.3–5.8 times higher h values compared to solely oxidized counterparts. The diffusion coefficients of oxidized fabrics coated with alginate increase up to 35% with prolonged oxidation, emphasizing the oxidation impact on alginate binding.

AB - Engineered wood products along with advanced processing and fabrication are pushing the limits of modern wood construction. Innovative concepts and applications facilitate the development of a new generation of structural systems. However, capacities of such systems are often governed by capabilities of the connections. This paper presents the experimental results with numerical and analytical models of angle brackets for prediction of load bearing capacity, stiffness, and ductility.
Three types of metal brackets in beam-column connections have been investigated and their performance has been studied in various loading arrangements. Detailed finite-element models of each connection have been developed to gain insights into their behavior. An analytical approach is also adopted to represent the connections. Comparison with test data suggests that
the models can reproduce results with good accuracy. The findings confirm feasibility of implementing ductile connections in practical mass timber structures.

AB - The syntheses of Ag-based nanoparticles (NPs) with the assistance of plant extracts have been shown to be environmentally benign and cost-effective alternatives to conventional chemical syntheses. This study discusses the application of Paliurus spina-christi, Juglans regia, Humulus lupulus, and Sambucus nigra leaf extracts for in situ synthesis of Ag-based NPs on cotton fabric modified with citric acid. The presence of NPs with an average size ranging from 57 to 99 nm on the fiber surface was confirmed by FESEM. XPS analysis indicated that metallic (Ag0) and/or ionic silver (Ag2O and AgO) appeared on the surface of the modified cotton. The chemical composition, size, shape, and amounts of synthesized NPs were strongly dependent on the applied plant extract. All fabricated nanocomposites exhibited excellent antifungal activity against yeast Candida albicans. Antibacterial activity was significantly stronger against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus than Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. In addition, 99% of silver was retained on the samples after 24 h of contact with physiological saline solution, implying a high stability of nanoparticles. Cytotoxic activity towards HaCaT and MRC5 cells was only observed for the sample synthetized in the presence of H. lupulus extract. Excellent antimicrobial activity and non-cytotoxicity make the developed composites efficient candidates for medicinal applications.

AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modifiedplant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained fromwaste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the producedsilica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigatethe mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization ofcomposite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) andmeasurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles withvinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and loadfor comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms ofoptimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - This study aimed to (1) comparatively analyze properties of Sr- and Mg-substituted
hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based dental inserts; (2) evaluate insert bonding to restorative
materials, and (3) evaluate the effect of doped HAP inserts on fracture resistance
(FR) of human molars with large occlusal restorations. By ion-doping with Sr or Mg,
3 insert types were obtained and characterized using XRD, SEM, Vickers hardness and
fracture toughness. Shear bond strength (SBS) was determined between acid etched or
unetched inserts and following materials: Maxcem cement (Kerr); Filtek Z250
(3M) bonded with Single Bond Universal (SBU; 3M) or Clearfil Universal (Cf; Kuraray).
Modified Class I cavities were prepared in 16 intact molars and restored using insert
+ composite or composite only (control) (n = 8/group). FR of restored molars was
determined by static load until fracture upon thermal cycling. Fracture toughness was
similar between Sr/Mg-doped inserts (0.94–1.04 MPam 1/2 p = .429). Mg-doped
inserts showed greater hardness (range 4.78–5.15 GPa) than Sr6 inserts (3.74
± 0.31 GPa; p < .05). SBS for SBU and Cf adhesives (range 7.19–15.93 MPa) was higher
than for Maxcem (range 3.07–5.95 MPa) (p < .05). There was no significant difference
in FR between molars restored with insert-containing and control restorations (3.00
± 0.30 kN and 3.22 ± 0.42 kN, respectively; p > .05). HAP-based inserts doped with
Mg/Sr had different composition and mechanical properties. Adhesive bonding to
inserts resulted in greater bond strength than cementation, which may be improved by
insert acid-etching. Ion-doped HAP inserts did not affect FR of restored molars. In conclusion,
HAP-based dental inserts may potentially replace dentin in large cavities, without
affecting fracture resistance of restored teeth.

AB - Screening of various potential biosorbents originated from locally available lignocellulosic biomass has led to the investigation of so far uninvestigated raspberry cane for removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. To estimate its adsorption properties, its structure and textural properties were investigated, as well as kinetic and equilibrium studies. Results showed that adsorption occurs fast manifesting the high removal efficiency over a wide range of chromium concentrations with a maximum over 95%, at an initial concentration of about 50 mg/l. The pseudo-second-order model appeared to be the best for fitting kinetic data, while experimental isotherms were the best described by the Langmuir model. The adsorption mechanism is mainly governed by electrostatic attraction of the positively charged surface and the negatively charged chromium species at pH 2, coupled by the reduction of Cr(VI) ions to cationic Cr(III) that occurs concurrently with the oxidation of the RC lignin. The Cr(III) ions are retained through different mechanisms such as surface complexation, ion exchange, and cation-π interactions. The results of this research open up new possibilities for the usage and management of solid waste from raspberry cultivation.

AB - Three new diphenyltin(IV) complexes, bis(3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1(2H)-yl)propanoato)diphenyltin(IV)
(1), bis(2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (2), and bis(2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxoquinolin1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (3), were synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalysis, FT-IR
spectroscopy, and multinuclear (
1
H, 13C and 119Sn) NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structure of ligand precursor,
2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1-(2H)-yl)acetic acid (HL2), has been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.
Asymmetric bidentate coordination of the carboxylato ligands and skew trapezoidal structures are assumed for
the synthesized complexes. In vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized diphenyltin(IV) complexes was evaluated against three human: MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375 (melanoma), HCT116 (colorectal carcinoma),
and three mouse tumor cell lines: 4T1 (breast carcinoma), B16 (melanoma), CT26 (colon carcinoma) using MTT
and CV assays. The IC50 values fall in the range from 0.1 to 3.7 μM. Flow cytometric analysis and fluorescent
microscopy suggest that complex 1 induces caspase-dependent apoptosis followed with strong blockade of cell
division in HCT116 cells. Since complex 1 showed ROS/RNS scavenging potential mentioned cytotoxicity was
not connected with oxidative stress.

AB - Tissue engineering strives for innovative solutions in addressing challenges associated with contemporary bone tissue implants. This study focuses on the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of hydroxyapatite-based bioceramic composites containing antibacterial agents onto titanium surfaces. Two composite coatings, hydroxyapa-tite/chitosan (HAP/CS) and hydroxyapatite/chitosan/gentamicin (HAP/CS/Gent) were developed to combat issues such as poor adhesion, limited antibacterial potential, limited bioactivity, and potential toxicity of implant materials [1].
