AB - The use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cryogel as a model hydrogel for iontophoretic transdermal investigations is proposed. Due to the excellent combination of its properties, it could be used for evaluating iontophoretic transdermal delivery of variety of drugs, regardless of pK(a), pH or presence of auxiliary ions. Applicability of PVA Cryogel for drug delivery purposes was compared to those of polyacrylic acid/polyvinyl alcohol (PAA/PVA) and polyacrylic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAA/PVP) adhesive interpenetrating networks. Swelling properties of PVA Cryogel were shown to be almost independent on pH and NaCl concentration, while swelling of PAA-based gels was significantly affected. Addition of PVA and PVP to PAA decreased swelling degrees and increased adhesivity and compression moduli. Iontophoretic experiments were performed using a donor gel/skin/receptor gel configuration; current density and delivery duration were varied. Dexamethasone sodium phosphate was used as model drug molecule. PVA Cryogel was used for investigating the influence of NaCl concentration, which can alter the amount of current carried by the drug ions and, therefore, the delivery rate. By using PVA Cryogel it was possible to easily determine the amount of drug permeated through the skin into the receptor gel, the amount retained by the skin and the amount remained in the donor hydrogel. Decreasing NaCl concentration in PVA Cryogel resulted in higher total amounts of drug delivered and significantly enhanced drug permeation through the lower layers of the skin into the receptor hydrogel.

AB - Composites based on natural zeolite – clinoptilolite and thymol were prepared using
two different approaches: 1) wet impregnation (WI) and supercritical solvent impregnation
(SSI). The SSI was more superior since it yielded the composite with higher amount of
thymol and with stronger thymol-clinoptilolite interactions than WI. The composites
exhibited antibacterial activity towards Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Grampositive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus suggesting its applicability for disinfectant purposes.

AB - Due to structural complexity and toxicity of organic dyes their presence in water body
causes usually serious environmental problems. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have
been recognized as effective methods for a complete degradation of organic dyes. In this
study, Serbian natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) loaded with Fe(III) was used for the preparation
of a photocatalyst and its catalytic activity was tested in the photodegradation of methylene
blue (MB) as a model cationic dye under visible light at room temperature and atmospheric
pressure. It is showed that the prepared Fe(III)-containing clinoptilolite (FeZ) can be used as
active and recyclable photocatalyst in degradation of MB.

AB - Catalysts based on natural zeolite - clinoptilolite loaded with either SnO2 (TOHCLI) or sulfated SnO2 (STOHCLI) were prepared and tested in the esterification of levulinic acid (LA) with octanol or ethanol. The Sn content in TOHCLI and STOHCLI varied from 4.5 to 12.3 wt.%. The catalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction method, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, NZ physisorption at - 196 degrees C, (27)A1 and Si-29 MAS NMR solid state spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy for analysis of acidic centers. A high conversion rate of LA into octyl- (OLA) or ethyl levulinate (ELA) was obtained for both TOHCLI and STOHCLI. TOHCLI showed a high activity in the conversion of LA into OLA (55%) and a moderate activity in the conversion to ELA (22%). STOHCLI led to a total conversion of LA to OLA and ELA due to the presence of a high amount of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites in the catalysts. The catalytic activity decreased to 86% for OLA and to 66% for ELA after next five cycles. Lower catalytic activity in the repeated cycles during ELA formation was explained by pore blockage due to coke formation.

AB - Antibacterial activity of a natural zeolite, clinoptilolite (Z), enriched with about 0.4-0.5 mmol of Ag (Ag-Z), Cu (Cu-Z) or Zn (Zn-Z) was tested toward two strains of Gram-negative bacteria - Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii - in natural seawater from Adriatic Sea (Croatia). The Ag-Z and Cu-Z exhibited bactericidal activity toward E. coli and A. baumannii after 3 and 6 h of exposure, respectively. The Zn-Z showed antibacterial activity toward both strains, but lacking the bactericidal effect even after 24 h of exposure. All studied samples released metal cations in seawater. Concentration of Ag and Zn leached from Ag-Z and Zn-Z was higher than maximum allowable concentrations (MAC) for drinking water, whereas concentration of Cu was below MAC. Due to high concentration of Na+ in seawater (about 1.2 g Na+ dm(-3)) an ion-exchange process can be responsible for the leaching of the studied cations. The lowest extent of leaching from Cu-Z was ascribed to different position and geometry of sites occupied by Cu(II) in the clinoptilolite lattice. The antibacterial activity of M-Z was attributed to the metal cations leached from the zeolite lattice into seawater. The obtained results indicate that Cu-Z can be considered as a promising disinfectant for treatment of seawater.

AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylateco-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298-343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g(-1) at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - Clinoptilolite is the most abundant natural zeolite in Serbia, and the Zlatokop deposit (near Vranjska Banja) is the largest deposit. The zeolitic tuff (CT) from Zlatokop contains >70 wt. % clinoptilolite with quartz and feldspar as major mineral impurities. Considering the high clinoptilolite content in the CT, this tuff has been studied in detail as an adsorbent, catalyst carrier and antimicrobial agent. We evaluated the cation-exchange capacity for several toxic metal cations, the sorption efficiency for several anions, the catalytic activity in the processes of valorization of biomass, and the antimicrobial activity of the CT.

AB - Several NiO contained-zeolites (NiO/H-ZSM-5, NiO/H-BETA and NiO/H-Y) prepared by a mechanochemical dry milling (MCDM) were tested in the pyrolysis of two hardwood lignins: Eucalyptus (EUC) and a mixture of birch and aspen woods (BA). All prepared catalysts increased the yield of aromatics and decreased the yield of oxygenates as compared to non-catalytic experiment. The catalytic activity depends on the lignin type and zeolite structural features. The highest liquid and gas yields and lowest coke yield was obtained with NiO/H-Y which also increased the amounts of desirable and decreased undesirable pyrolysis products, giving a high concentration of hydrogen in the gaseous phase. The highest yield of aromatics and the lowest yield of oxygenates was obtained with NiO/H-ZSM-5. The obtained results showed that BA is a more suitable feedstock, producing higher yields of liquids and aromatics and lower yields of coke and oxygenates.

AB - The present study was aimed at examining the ability of the natural zeolitic tuff from the Zlatokop deposit in Serbia to remove Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions under various conditions. It has been found that the adsorption proceeds via an ion-exchange reaction in which the Na+ ions from the clinoptilolite phase of the tuff are replaced to a high degree by aqueous Pb(II) ions. The removal capacity of the clinoptilolite at 298 K varies from 78 mg Pb g(-1) (for C-0 = 100 mg Pb dm-3) to 92.5 mg Pb g(-1) (for C-0 = 400 mg Pb dm(-3)), the capacity markedly increasing with temperature. The adsorption isotherm is in accord with the Langmuir model. The ion-exchange kinetics can be best described by the pseudo-second-order model. Intra-particle diffusion of Pb2+ is present in the process, but it is not the rate-limiting step and that can be explained by a modification of the Pb(II) hydration sphere during the ion-exchange. From the adsorption of Pb(II) on the studied zeolitic tuff, it is revealed that the ion-exchange process is spontaneous and endothermic, and that the standard free energy decreases with temperature.

AB - Environmental protection and sustainable agricultural production require the use of inexpensive and environmentally acceptable soil supplements. Objectives of this study were to investigate the influence of the addition of the natural zeolite - clinoptilolite (NZ) and its iron(III)-modified form (FeZ) on the potassium and nitrate leaching from sandy, silty loam and silty clay soils. The zeolites were added in two amounts: 0.5 (FeZ) and 1.0 wt. % (NZ and FeZ). The experiments were carried out in columns organized in eight experimental systems containing unamended (control specimens) and amended soils. The concentration of K+ and NO3-N in the leachates was monitored during 7 days. The obtained results indicate that the K+ and NO3-N leaching mainly depends on the soil type and pH of the soil. The NZ and FeZ addition has the highest impact on the K+ retention in the acidic sandy soil. The highest NO3-N retention is obtained with FeZ in acidic silty loam soil. The K+ leaching kinetics for all the studied soils follow the Avrami kinetics model with the parameter n lt 1. This study demonstrates that NZ and FeZ can be a good soil supplement for the K+ retention for all studied soils and in the NO3-N retention for silty loam and silty clay soils.

AB - Two types of zeolites-natural clinoptilolite (NZ) and synthetic zeolite A (A)-were enriched with approx. 0.25 mmol of Cu(II), Zn(II), or Ag(I) ions, and the obtained materials (M-Z) were tested against three different isolates of Escherichia coli. Two isolates were environmental isolates from waters in Serbia whereas the third one was DSM 498. Antibacterial activity was studied in different water media-nutrient-rich media (peptone water), water from Sava Lake, and commercially available spring water. The Ag-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in the nutrient-rich peptone water after 1 h of contact. Cu- and Zn-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in real water samples. Antibacterial activity of the M-Z decreases in all three examined water media in the following order: Ag-NZ ae Ag-A gt Cu-NZ ae Cu-A gt Zn-NZ gt gt gt Zn-A, suggesting that mainly the metal type and not the zeolite type have a role in the antibacterial activity. Leaching experiments showed small amounts of the leached Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, indicating that the antibacterial activity is not due to the metal ions but should be attributed to the M-Z itself. However, leached amounts of Ag(I) from Ag-NZ and Ag-A in peptone water indicate that the released Ag(I) could be mainly responsible for the bactericidal effect of the Ag(I)-containing zeolites. Since no loss of cellular material was found, the antibacterial activity is not attributed to cytoplasmic membrane damage.

AB - Clinoptilolite-rich tuff (Z) enriched with Fe(III) was studied in the removal of phosphate ions present in aqueous medium at pH = 6.5. Fe(III) modification was performed by a simple wet impregnation giving the product (FeZ) with about 18 wt% Fe. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of a flaky Fe(III) amorphous precipitate on the clinoptilolite sheets and a preserved clinoptilolite crystallinity. The modification increased the specific surface area from 28.6 to 140.3 m(2) g(-1). FeZ effectively adsorbed phosphate, the removal rate at 298 K varying from 86% to 42.5% (for C-0 = 50 mg dm(-3) and C-0 = 400 mg dm(-3)). The sorption isotherms were in accord with the Langmuir model, giving for the Langmuir constant (R-L) values in the range 0-1 that are characteristic of a favourable adsorption. The data for adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-second-order model suggesting chemisorption as the phosphate sorption mechanism. Intra-particle diffusion was present in the adsorption, but it was not the rate-limiting step. A P-31 static spin-echo mapping nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement was performed for studying the phosphate-FeZ interaction. The results showed that the phosphate adsorption on FeZ proceeds through electrostatic interactions and covalent bonding, the latter being more pronounced.

AB - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. In the fifth cycle, a substantial sorption loss of 37% was observed.

AB - Influence of the iron(III)-modified clinoptilolite (FeCLI) on phosphorus leaching from two different Norwegian soil types (sand and clay loam soil) was studied using a column system at room temperature. FeCLI was used in different amounts of 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 wt. %. The obtained results indicate that the presence of FeCLI causing a reduction of phosphorus leaching from both soil types. The reduction efficiency increases with the FeCLI amount. Addition of 2.5 wt.% FeCLI to the soils decreased the phosphorus leaching by 48 % from clay loam soil and by 42 % from sand soil compared to the control systems. FeCLI also increased pH of the soils from 5.1 to 7.0 for sand and from 5.7 to 7.7 for clay loam soil. All obtained results indicate that FeCLI is a promising soil supplement for the studied soil types due to phosphorus preservation and a decrease of soil acidity.

AB - The depolymerization of biolignin (BL), eucalyptus (EL), and hardwood lignins (HL) to simple aromatics was studied by a microwave assisted approach using NiO/H-ZSM-S zeolites as catalysts. The catalysts prepared by the mechanochemical dry milling (MCDM) method contained bunsenite nano NiO particles with an average size of 67 mu m at a concentration of 1-4.8 wt % NiO. Yields and composition of the obtained bio-oils are highly dependent on lignin type as well as on the content of NiO. The highest bio-oil yield (about 20 wt %) was obtained using 3.5 wt % NiO and HL as the feedstock. A number of relevant findings based depolymerization experiments are provided which pointed to different monomeric products (mostly S-derived) that could be produced in different proportions depending on the source of investigated lignin and content of the NiO at H-ZSM-5.

AB - Sorption of the Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions by the Na+-enriched natural clinoptilolite (Na-CLI) from aqueous solutions containing both Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions at a range of concentrations has been studied at 298, 308, and 318K. It was found that the sorption of a particular ion by Na-CLI increases with the increase in the initial concentration of the solution of that ion. At a given initial concentration, the sorption degree increases with temperature. Also, the sorption of a particular ion is greater when the initial solution contains a second ion than it is when the particular ion is present alone. The sorption kinetics is in accord with the pseudo-second-order reaction rate model. The values of the k(2) rate constant do not show a regular change with the initial Zn2+/Ni2+ concentrations probably because the presence of the second ion has a significant effect on the reaction rate. Thermodynamic study has shown that the sorption is exothermic, occurring spontaneously in the 298-318K range and with a positive entropy change.

AB - In this study the uptake capacity of Mn(II) ions by zeolite A beads was investigated for different initial Mn concentration (100-400 mg Mn dm(-3)) in batch mode at 25-55 degrees C. The obtained adsorption capacity varying from 30 to 50 mg Mn g(-1) demonstrated a high affinity of zeolite A towards Mn(II) present in solutions. Kinetic studies indicated the intra-particle diffusion as the rate limiting step up to 45 degrees C with apparent diffusivities in the range (1.2-2.0) x 10(-13) m(2) s(-1) and the activation energy of 21.9 kJ mol(-1), which implies strong interactions between the zeolite A and Mn ions. At 55 degrees C ion-exchange became the rate limiting step. The adsorption isotherms were studied at 25 degrees C showing that the Mn adsorption is the best described by the Langmuir model suggesting a homogenous zeolite surface. XPS analysis of the Mn-loaded beads showed that there is no surface accumulation of Mn but an almost uniform Mn distribution inside zeolite A, whereas XANES and EXAFS suggested that the adsorption of Mn(II) was followed by the Mn(II) oxidation and oxide formation. Regeneration of the spent zeolite was examined in 8 adsorption/desorption cycles by a chelating Na(2)EDTA in a fluidized column. It has been found that zeolite A beads could be reused for at least 4 cycles with satisfactory Mn(II) adsorption efficiencies of about 70%.

abstract = "In this study the uptake capacity of Mn(II) ions by zeolite A beads was investigated for different initial Mn concentration (100-400 mg Mn dm(-3)) in batch mode at 25-55 degrees C. AB - In this work, different metal oxides (MO) supported on two types of zeolites: 1) natural clinoptilolite (NZ) and 2) synthetic zeolite, ZSM-5 were prepared and tested as catalysts in the fast pyrolysis of hardwood lignin. NZ was modified with the CaO and MgO by a simple two steps procedure consisting of an ion exchange reaction and subsequent calcination at 773 K. The synthetic ZSM-5 was modified with several MO species (Ni, Cu, Ca, Mg) by wet impregnation and calcination at 873 K. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDS), and measurement of their specific surface area (BET method). Acid sites were characterized and quantified by pyridine (py) absorption using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The catalysts exhibit catalytic activity depending on modification, reaction temperature and of the MO contents. The highest yield of useful phenol in bio-oil was obtained with NiO/ZSM-5 (34.8 wt. %) which exhibits the highest specific surface area and the highest concentration of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites. The studied catalysts did not increase significantly the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 'heavy' compounds (phenols with M-r gt 164 g mol(-1)) compared to non-catalytic experiment.

AB - In the first part of the dissertation, the possibility of modifying the zeolitic tuff from the mine Zlatokop (near Vranjska Banja) was investigated in order to obtain new adsorbents. The second part presents the possibility of synthesize of new phosphate‐based microporous materials with structural properties of zeolites. The zeolitic tuff modified with benzalkonium chloride (BC) was tested as an adsorbent for the salicylate‐anions (SA). SA‐enriched zeolite was further studied as a model system for the controlled release of the pharmacologically active substance as well as a disinfectant toward the pathogenic bacteria: Gram‐negative Escherichia coli and Gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus. It was found that about 80% of the adsorbed salicylate is delivered into solution during 5 hours. The release profile of SA from BC‐modified zeolite into solution is in a good agreement with the Korsmeyer‐Peppas kinetic model, which is usually used for description of the release kinetics of the pharmacologically active substances from different substrates. The zeolitic tuff modified with hydrated iron(III) oxide was investigated as an adsorbent for selenite and selenate ions. The adsorbent binds the anions through formation of Se‐O‐Fe and Se‐O‐Si bonds and oxo‐complexes. The spent adsorbent was tested as a supplement for the cultivation of mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus. The mushrooms grown on the substrate show possibility to adopt selenium from the surface and transfer it into selenoproteins. Structural role of 3‐methylaminopropylamine (MPA) in the synthesis of the porous inorganic phosphate‐based polymers was tested in the second part of thesis. The influence of temperature and time, the mole ratio of reactants and the presence of fluoride ions on the crystallization of aluminophosphates, metalsubstituted aluminophosphates and zincophosphates was investigated. Some of the obtained crystalline products are isostructural with the known alumo‐ and galophosphates, while others are new crystalline products.

AB - This study presents the impact of addition of natural zeolite - clinoptilolite on potassium retention in the soil. Three different types of soil (from three different locations): Norway, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were analyzed. Potassium is one of the most important plant nutrient and its availability depends greatly on the soil type.Sandy soils, poor in potassium content have a small adsorption capacity and leaching of potassium occurs in a great extend. Due to ion exchange and adsorption properties of natural zeolites, we investigated how addition of the zeolitic tuff from Zlatokop mine (Vranjska Banja, Srbija) affects potassium leaching from the soils.Experiments were carried out in 12 parallel columns (diameter/height: 2.4/30 cm) which are divided into three systems: control - soil; system A - soil and 1 wt. % zeolite; system B - soil and 0.06 wt.% KNO3 and System C - soil, 1 wt. % zeolite, and 0.06 wt.% KNO3. The columns were irrigated with distilled water (flow rate - 2.2 ml/h; which is equivalent to an average level of rainfall). The concentration of leachate potassium was determined during 7 days. All experiments were done in triplicate. The results indicate that the addition of zeolite has the greatest impact on the K retention in the sandy soil. This leads to conclusion that that the zeolite from Zlatokop deposite can be a good supplement for potassium retention in a sandy soil.
% zeolita, sistem B - zemljište i 0,06 mas.% kalijum-nitrat i sistem C - zemljište, 1 mas. % zeolita i 0,06 mas.% kalijum-nitrat.

AB - Clinoptilolite-rich tuff (NZ) from the Zlatokop deposit (Vranjska Banja, Serbia) was studied as a nitrogen carrier for grass production. The mechanism of binding ammonium cations present in aqueous solutions by NZ was examined, as well as the possibility of adsorption of ammonia released in fresh cattle manure during its fermentation. The NH4+ binding from solutions proceeded via an ion-exchange process that followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Adsorption isotherms studied at 298-318 K followed the Freundlich isotherm equation. The NZ readily adsorbs ammonia liberated from manure and the addition of 10 wt. % of NZ to manure can preserve up to 90 % of ammonia. The potential benefit of this effect was examined in greenhouse pot experiments with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, var. Macho) using three different types of soil (silty, clayey and sandy). The zeta potential measurements showed that the stability of their colloidal dispersions differed mutually and that the addition of NZ affected the stability and nitrogen cycling differently. All results indicated that NZ could be applied in grass production.

AB - The multidrug-resistant bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii cause serious hospital infections. Commercial poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) used for endotracheal tubes was modified in order to obtain a composite with an antibacterial effect towards a clinical isolate of A. baumannii ST145. The composites were prepared by addition of different amounts of copper-containing zeolite tuff (CuZ) and by successive impregnation with D-tyrosine (D-Tyr) solution. The composites that were obtained by addition of CuZ (CuZ PVC) only did not exhibit an antibacterial effect. The impregnation of the CuZ PVC by D-Tyr resulted in an antibacterial effect which was explained by a synergistic effect of CuZ and D-Tyr. Rheological tests confirmed that the modification of PVC by CuZ does not affect its processability and reformability.

AB - Se(IV) and Se(VI) anions are the dominant species of Se existing in aqueous systems. In this study, the iron(III)-modified natural zeolitic tuff (Fe-CLI) from the Serbian deposit Zlatokop has been investigated as an adsorbent for the Se oxyanions. Fe-CLI shows adsorption activity for both Se(IV) and Se(VI) which decreases with increasing pH. The adsorption capacity of Fe-CLI is found to be higher for Se(IV) than for Se(VI). Kinetics data follow the pseudo-second-order model and the obtained parameters k indicate that the rates of adsorption and desorption are higher for Se(VI). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses reveal that Se is bound at the zeolite surface forming not only the Se-O-Fe but also Se-O-Si bonds. The adsorption mechanism depends of the type of oxo ions. Samples of zeolitic tuff which contain Se were tested as soil supplements for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms. The fungus adsorbed the inorganic Se from zeolitic tuff transforming it to a more valuable organically bound form.
