AB - Oxidized starch, an additive used in paper manufacturing and products for construction industry, is usually produced using harmful oxidant, such as hypochlorites or periodates. In this study, a simple and efficient eco-friendly laboratory and industrial procedures for starch oxidation were developed. The procedure involves application of small amounts of more environmentally friendly oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, a novel special metal complex catalyst such as copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate and biobased plasticizers. Optimization procedure, with respect to the quantity of hydrogen peroxide and temperature in the presence of iron(II) sulphate catalyst, was performed by using the response surface methodology. Comparative analysis of the use of the other catalysts that is copper(II) sulphate, copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate, indicated copper(II) citrate as the catalyst of choice. Improvement of starch is achieved using three plasticizers: ricinoleic acid (RA), diisopropyl tartarate, as well as epoxidized soybean, linseed and sunflower oils. The effects of hydrogen peroxide and catalyst concentrations, as well as the reaction temperature in the presence of naturally based plasticizers on the physicochemical, thermal and morphological properties of oxidized starch are presented. According to the results obtained in initial experiments, the optimal industrial process is based on the use of copper(II) citrate (0.1 %) as a catalyst and RA (3 %) as a plasticizer.

AB - Novel highly effective amino-functionalized lignin-based biosorbent in the microsphere geometry (A-LMS) for removal of heavy metal ions, was synthesized via inverse suspension copolymerization of kraft lignin with poly(ethylene imine) grafting-agent and epoxy chloropropane cross-linker. Optimization of A-LMS synthesis, performed with respect to the quantity of sodium alginate emulsifier (1, 5 and 10 wt%), provides highly porous microspheres A-LMS_5, using 5 wt% emulsifier, with 800 +/- 80 mu m diameter, 7.68 m(2) g(-1) surface area and 7.7 mmol g(-1) of terminal amino groups. Structural and surface characteristics were obtained from Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and porosity determination. In a batch test, the influence of pH, A-LMS_5 dose, temperature, contact time on adsorption efficiency of Ni2+, Cd2+, As(V) and Cr(VI) ions were studied. The adsorption is spontaneous and feasible with maximum adsorption capacity of 74.84, 54.20, 53.12 and 49.42 mg g(-1) for Cd2+, Cr(VI), As(V) and Ni2+ ions, respectively, obtained by using Langmuir model. Modeling of kinetic data indicated fast adsorbate removal rate with pore diffusional transport as rate limiting step (pseudo-second order model and Weber-Morris equations), thus further confirming high performances of produced bio-adsorbent for heavy metal ions removal.

AB - Natural zeolite and bentonite were utilized as mineral additives in the mix-design of environmentally safe cement-based building materials. The adsorptive abilities of these two clayey raw materials, i.e. their affinity to immobilize heavy metal ions Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+ were investigated. Singleand multi-solutions of Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+ were prepared for the experiment. The obtained results were submitted to analysis via pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic models. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were analyzed. Bentonite exhibited better adsorption affinity than zeolite towards all four investigated cations. As a proof, a leaching test was conducted on seven different cement binders with different mineral additives (fly ash, zeolite, bentonite). The leachates obtained on the samples of cement with addition of fly ash and clay (either zeolite or bentonite) contained lower concentrations of Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions than leachates obtained on the samples of cement binder with fly ash solely as a result of adsorption and hydration mechanisms that immobilized heavy metals within cementitious composites.

AB - Multiferroic systems are attractive to the researches worldwide due to diversity of existing applications, as well as possible novel ones. In order to contribute to understanding of the processes that take place within the structure of such a system, we subjected it to mechanochemical activation and thermal treatment. Powdery mixtures of iron and barium titanate in a mass ratio of 30% Fe and 70% BaTiO3 were activated in a planetary ball mill for time duration of 30 to 300 min and subsequently sintered at 1200 degrees C in the atmosphere of air. During the activation the system undergoes structural phase transitions, whereby the content of iron and its oxides changes. The highest Fe content was observed in the sample activated for 270 min, with local maxima in crystallite size and microstrain values and a minimum in dislocation density. The complex dielectric permittivity changes in the applied radio frequency field, rangingfrom 176.9 pF/m in thesample activated for 90 min to 918.1 pF/m in the sample activated for 180 min. As the frequency of the field increases, an exponential decrease in the magnetic with a simultaneous increase in the electrical energy losses is noticeable. The system exhibits ferromagnetic resonance, whereby longer activation in the mill shifts the resonant frequency to higher values. Negative electrical resistance was observed in all analyzed samples. The activation time changes both the demagnetization temperature and the Curie temperature of the samples undergoing heating and cooling cycles in the external permanent magnetic field. Curie temperature is the highest in the sample activated for 240 min. Thermal treatment increases the initial magnetization of all samples, with the most pronounced increase of similar to 95% in the sample activated for 300 min.

AB - The adsorption performance of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) alumina doped with iron oxide, and subsequently modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, was used for enhanced Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ removal. The phase composition and the structural and surface/textural properties of the obtained adsorbents were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetry, Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area of the samples and point of zero charge determination. Adsorption of selected cations was examined in the batch conditions using different contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperatures. Different models of the adsorption isotherms were used for determination of the adsorption capacities, in which the best fit of Freundlich and Langmuir model was obtained for FeAl2O3, that is, Freundlich model for FeAl(2)O(3)APTES. A significant increase of adsorption capacities: from 44.21 to 51.66 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, 25.69 to 32.96 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 19.48 to 24.64 mg g(-1) for Ni2+ was obtained for FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, respectively, which indicated the significance of the macroporous structure of 3DOM alumina and subsequent amino-terminal modification. The values of the correlation coefficient (R-2) suggested that pseudo-second kinetic model best describes Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption on FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, and Cd2+ and Ni2+ onto FeAl2O3, while second kinetic model gave the highest correlation coefficients for Pb2+ adsorption on FeAl2O3.

The values of the correlation coefficient (R-2) suggested that pseudo-second kinetic model best describes Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption on FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, and Cd2+ and Ni2+ onto FeAl2O3, while second kinetic model gave the highest correlation coefficients for Pb2+ adsorption on FeAl2O3.",

AB - The synthesis and adsorption potential of Cy-npAg, obtained by modification of raw montmorillonite clay (raw-Cy) with silver nanoparticle (npAg), was studied in this work. Optimization procedure, with respect to time, temperature and amount of deposit npAg, obtained either by reductive precipitation or ultraviolet irradiation, was performed using response surface methodology (RSM). The most efficient adsorbent, obtained by chemical reduction of silver ion with sodium borohydride, named Cy-npAg, was characterized in detail using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, and point of zero charge determination. The Cy-npAg showed good adsorption capacity with respect to non-systemic organophosphate insecticide (diazinon) as well as of heavy metals ions (Cd2+ and Ni2+ ions), that is, 74.26, 62.33, and 35.49 mg g(-1), respectively, obtained from Langmuir model fitting. Temperature dependent kinetic study allowed determination of pseudo-second rate constant (10(3) g mg(-1) min(-1))/activation energies (kJ mol(-1)): 1.45/14.48 for diazinon, and 1.27/6.59 and 0.7/7.35 kJ mol(-1) for Cd2+ and Ni2+ ions, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters indicated feasible and spontaneous adsorption with main participation of physisorption. Antibacterial potential of npAg deposit for water disinfection was confirmed by the moderate reduction of bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, by 64%, 39%, and 70%, respectively. Thus, two synergistic effects contribute to water purification processes using Cy-npAg: pollutants removal with a simultaneous decrease of the microbial contamination contributing to overall water quality improvement.

AB - The starch oxidation involves oxidation of primary or secondary hydroxyl to carbonyl
or carboxyl groups, whereas the number of these groups indicates the level of oxidation.
Oxidized starch is used as surface sizing agent and coating binder in the paper industry,
or as polymeric filler that increases the polymer degradability. The main objective of the
presented study is to investigate the effects of various parameters on the oxidation
process of the wheat starch, using dry method (Fig. 1). These parameters include
oxidizer concentration, catalyst type (iron(II) sulphate, copper(II) sulphate and
copper(II) citrate), presence of plasticizers/modifiers (ricinoleic acid, (R-(Z))-12-
hydroxy-9-octadecenoic acid, RA) and diizopropyl tartarate ((dipropan-2-yl 2,3-
dihydroxybutanedioate, DIPT) and reaction temperature (20 and 80 °C). The obtained
results suggest that higher values of carbonyl and carboxyl groups lead to an increase of
swelling capacity and solubility, while viscosity decreases, compared to the native wheat
starch. The analysis of FTIR spectra, especially region of carbonyl/carboxyl groups
absorption, reveals high impact of process parameters on the oxidation degree and band
structure. The morphology of native and oxidized starches, investigated by the SEM
method, shows that after oxidation the surface of the starch particles becomes smoother
then for the native starch, with aggregation of small and large-sized granules.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 degrees C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - This batch and column kinetics study of arsenic removal utilized copper-impregnated natural mineral tufa (T-Cu(A-C)) under three ranges of particle size. Non-competitive kinetic data fitted by the Weber-Morris model and the single resistance mass transfer model, i.e., mass transfer coefficient k(f)a and diffusion coefficient (D-eff) determination, defined intra-particle diffusion as the dominating rate controlling step. Kinetic activation parameters, derived from pseudo-second-order rate constants, showed low dependence on adsorbent geometry/morphology and porosity, while the diffusivity of the pores was significant to removal efficacy. The results of competitive arsenic adsorption in a multi-component system of phosphate, chromate, or silicate showed effective arsenic removal using T-Cu adsorbents. The high adsorption rate-pseudo-second-order constants in the range 0.509-0.789gmg(-1)min(-1) for As(V) and 0.304-0.532gmg(1)min(1) for As(III)-justified further application T-Cu(A-C) in a flow system. The fixed-bed column adsorption data was fitted using empirical Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and dose-response models to indicate capacities and breakthrough time dependence on arsenic influent concentration and the flow rate. Pore surface diffusion modeling (PSDM), following bed-column testing, further determined adsorbent capacities and mass transport under applied hydraulic loading rates.

AB - In the present study the commercial multifunctional fatty acid polyamidoamine (PAA) was for the first time simultaneously applied as a curing agent and clay modifier for epoxy/clay nanocomposites (NC) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The montmorillonite (Cloisite (R) Na+) was modified with different quantities of partially and fully protonated polyamidoamine. The NCs with 0.5 wt% novel organoclay were prepared by solution intercalation method. The major aims of this paper are investigations of the effects of the composition of PAA modified clays on structure, mechanical, barrier properties and corrosion stability on steel substrates of NCs were studied. The thermogravimetric, flame photometry and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the efficient modification of clay surface with polyamidoamine, predominantly located within layers. The NCs exhibited an intercalated/exfoliated morphology and the presence of free amino groups and increased content of modifier facilitated dispersion of clay particles within the polymer matrix, as shown by electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM). Under an optimized loading of PAA (molar quantity of total amino groups per clay cation exchange capacity of 1.75), the layers in stacks were separated by 5.0 nm and high number of individual layers was present in NC. Clay modified by PAA with free amino groups showed increased storage modulus in the rubbery state, glass transition temperature of NCs, while dumping factor was decreased. The tensile test confirmed that introduction of flexible modifier on the epoxy/clay interface lead to increase in the ultimate tensile strenght and elongation at break by 31% and toughness up to 83%. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved.

The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved.",

AB - Adjustment and subsequent validation of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) method for cement based binders with addition of mineral raw materials (fly ash, zeolite and bentonite) was conducted. Eighteen chemical elements present in the material composition were analyzed: ten major elements (Si, Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, S, Na, K, Ti, P) and eight trace elements (Cr, Zn, Cu, As, Ni, Pb, Sr, Mn). Thirty-five samples of either certified reference materials or reference materials of cement, fly ash and clay were utilized during adjustment and optimization of the investigated ED-XRF procedure. The method was consecutively validated in terms of selectivity, precision, working range, linearity, accuracy, robustness, limits of detection and quantification. Thirty-two samples in total, i.e. three certified reference materials and twenty-nine reference materials, were simultaneously analyzed by ED-XRF and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Comparison of the outputs of monitored methods showed infinitesimally small differences, as correlation coefficients were extremely good (approximate to 1), which highlighted ED-XRF as highly satiable alternative for ICP-OES for the chemical analysis of cement binders.

AB - New global tendencies for waste materials reusing in building materials are imposing the request for improved performances of chemical analysis methods and the improvements of matrices used. A new method for optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) is developed and validated for the chemical analysis (35 elements: Al, Be, Cd, So, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, V, Mo, Zn, Pb , Bi, Si, Zr, W, As, Se, Sb, Sn, Ti, Ba, B, Ag, Mg, Ca, K, Na, S, P, Ga, In, Li) in leachate of fly ash. Validation performances and the uncertainty of measurement were resolved. Uncertainty of measurements were resolved by three routes: validation procedure, participation in proficiency testing (PT) schemes and standard method. The obtained method is a new simple and effective analyzing route for determination of undesired trace elements and their quantity comprised in leachates of fly ash, and leachates of building materials with addition of fly ash (cement binders and mortars). In order to prove its accuracy and precision, the developed method was employed on laboratory samples of cement binders and mortars. Results were compared with limit values provided in the standard. Multivariate analyses, i.e. cluster analysis and principal component analysis, were applied to establish interrelations between analyzed samples, and to certify the developed ICP-OES method.

AB - Single phase MgAl2O4 was made from a one-to-one molar ratio of MgO and Al2O3 powders mixed using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 were subsequently treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes in air. The aim of this study was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of sintered specimens. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 degrees C, the powder was converted to single phase MgAl2O4. The results show that mechanical activation improved the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens, and it reduced the onset temperature for sintering by approx. 100 degrees C. Based on dilatometer data, powders were subsequently densified at 1450 degrees C by hot pressing. Almost all specimens exhibited full density, while sample activated for 30 minutes showed the fastest densification rate.

AB - Synthesis of branched aminated waste polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, realized in a three addition/amidation successive steps, was performed in order to obtain AS3-PAN adsorbent. Influence of various operating parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent mass and initial concentration of pollutants, on adsorption capacity has been studied. Design of the experimental plan of adsorption experiments, defined by response surface methodology (RSM), rationalized the number of necessary experiments. The calculated adsorption capacities for AS3-PAN, obtained by Langmuir model, were 58.94, 41.07, 34.51, 24.54 and 29.61 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Cr(VI) and As(V) ion, respectively. The results of pseudo-second-order reaction rate and Weber-Morris kinetic model indicated significant resistance due to intra-particle (pore) diffusion. The experimental results were compared with the theoretically calculated ones, obtained by RSM prediction model, and validation of applied methodology was performed by testing the quality of the regression analysis with analysis of variance test.

FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 +/- 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals. The N-TiO2/perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures.

AB - Comparative adsorption study related to benefits of parent media size, i.e. microfibrillated cellulose (MC) versus nanocellulose (NC) support, for the preparation of magnetite (MG) based high performance adsorbent for arsenic removal was conducted. Precipitation of MG on amino terminal branched organic structure, L, either linked by maleic acid residue on NC surface (NC-MA/L) or linked by oxalyl bridge on MC surface (MC-O/L) produced NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG adsorbents, respectively. Precipitation of nanosized MG on amino functionalized NC-MA/L and MC-O/L, performed according to optimized procedure, contributed to improved textural properties and adsorptive/kinetic performances of novel adsorbents. Adsorption capacity of arsenate, As(V), was in favor of NC-MA/L-MG (85.3 versus 18.5 mg g(-1)) while MC-O/L-MG exhibited faster kinetics (0.541 versus 0.189 g mg(-1) min(-1)). Lower capacity of arsenite, As(III), removal, 68.3 mg g(-1) for NC-MA/L-MG and 17.8 mg g(-1) for MC-O/L-MG, were obtained. Calculated activation energies, 13.28 and 10.87 kJ mol(-1) for NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG with respect to As(V), respectively, suggest, in accordance with results of Weber-Morris fitting, that internal mass transfer controls adsorption process. Model free adsorption kinetics confirmed beneficial uses of MC-O/L-MG due to low activation energy dependence on the extent of adsorption.

AB - Two types of alumina particles, commercial (c-Al2O3) and iron doped (Fe-Al2O3), were functionalized with 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (one-step) and two-step consecutive process, i.e. firstly using 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane followed by methyl ester of linseed oil (biodiesel) to produce Al(2)O(3)ATPMS-BD reinforcement, respectively. The effect of modifier type and variable amount of alumina particles on the dynamical and mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester resin-based composites was studied. The highest improvement of the tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness, 78.1 and 163%, respectively, was obtained at 1.0 wt% of Fe-Al(2)O(3)APTMS-BD addition. The obtained multifunctional composites can be potentially applied in construction and mining industries.

AB - The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work. Two methods of tannin modification were applied: direct method using ammonium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride buffer or diethylenetriamine (DETA); and a two-step method including tannin modification with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in first step to produce epoxy modified tannin, ET, and further modification with heteroaromatic amines or linseed oil fatty acids (LFA) in second step. The obtained anticorrosive additives were characterized using ATR-FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Epoxy, amino, hydroxyl, acid and iodine values of the synthesized inhibitors were determined according to standard methods. The prepared alkyd coating with tannin inhibitors was tested according to standard SRPS EN ISO 4628 method. Anticorrosive coating containing modified tannin based additive showed increased anticorrosive properties, good adhesion and coverage comparing to the coating with zinc phosphate additive. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results.

abstract = "The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results., U ovom radu prikazana je sinteza antikorozionih aditiva na bazi hemijski modifikovanog tanina i njihova primena u alkidnim premazima u cilju poboljšanja antikorozionih svojstava.

AB - The investigation of the influence of acid/base treatment and addition level of non-metallic fractions (NMFs), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards, on the mechanical properties and shrinkage of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR)-based composites was main topic presented in this paper. NMF particles were treated using four different oxidative/etching agents: H2SO4/KMnO4 (NMF1), H2SO4/HNO3 (NMF2), HNO3 (NMF3), and NaOH (NMF4). Treated NMF(1-4) particles were characterized using fourier transform infrared, Boehm titration, optical microscopy and SEM analysis. Tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness of UPR/NMF(1-4) composites were the most improved with addition of 0.5wt% of filler, for 5.9-24.7%, in comparison to composite filled with non-treated NMF particles. Cross-linking density (nu), storage, and loss modulus (G' and G''), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) testing. Shrinkage measurements, performed using Aramis 6.2.0, showed significant improvement in shrinkage reducing, for 17.8-30.6%, by introduction the oxidized NMF particles. Qualitative/quantitative evaluation of NMF(1-4) surface functionalities helped in understanding their influences on mechanical, DMA and shrinkage properties change of studied composites. POLYM. AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)-functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL--APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mossbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456mgg(-1) for WL--APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382mgg(-1) for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL--APS/MG, e.g., 1.17-13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL--APS.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is a suiTab. material for usage in various industry fields owing to its chemical stability, electrical and mechanical features. It is known that properties of ceramics could be modified by addition of different oxides, as well as by changing the consolidation parameters. In this respect, alumina was doped with 1 wt.% of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary ball mill. A sensitive dilatometer was used for sintering of powder mixtures up to 1400 degrees C and recording the obtained dilatation. The final density varied between cca. 1.9 and 3.3 g/cm(3). Microstructural changes were detected by SEM measurements. Changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent were associated with the preparation conditions (types of additives, duration of mechanical activation). For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses, exhibiting the optimal values of 8.32 and 0.027, respectively, for the sample activated 60 minutes and sintered, with the addition of MnO2. Mechanical measurements indicate significant differences in strength with the addition of different transition metal oxides. Samples with Mn and Ni, activated and sintered, with strength of 121 and 86 MPa, respectively, have a significantly higher tensile strength than the other tested samples, due to their more compact microstructures.

AB - The major aims of this paper are the investigation of the effects of the mixing procedure and the montmorillonite (Mt) surface modification on the structure (optical microscopy, XRD, TEM, SEM), rheological, mechanical properties (DMA, tensile test) and corrosion stability (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) of clay mineral/epoxy nanocomposite (CPN). Two series of CPN samples were prepared based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and polyamidoamine curing agent with three organophilic Mt and sodium-montmorillonite (1 wt%). Mt were mixed with DGEBA solution in the powder (direct mixing) and in the form of dispersions, preswollen in a commercial coating thinner (solution intercalation). The commercial Mt (Cloisite 30B) modified by quaternary alkylammonium ions bearing hydroxyl groups and especially Mt functionalized by primary (HDA(+)-Mt) alkylammonium ions, at loadings close to cation exchange capacity (CRC), were significantly swollen by thinner and further uniformly dispersed into CPN. Meanwhile, low gel volumes in thinner were found for more hydrophobic Mt (Cloisite 15A). The compatibility of Mt with solvents was well described by solubility and Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. In contrast to the direct incorporation of Mt powders in CPN, swelling enhanced intercalation of epoxy matrix into Mt, and for HDA(+)-Mt based CPN interlayer spacing reached 4.4 nm. The usage of HDA(+)-Mt organoclay and solution intercalation procedure provided the highest enhancement in rheological parameters (G', G", of Mt/epoxy dispersions and glassy storage modulus, Young's modulus and barrier properties of cured CPN.

A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m-NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross-linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox-Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross-linking capabilities on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m-NC is studied. Cross-linking density, modulus, and T-g of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification.
