AB - A series of nine 5-(4-substituted phenylazo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridones were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-Vis, and PL spectroscopy. Photophysical properties of the dyes were examined in solvents of various polarities and at different pH values. The solvent effects on the absorbance and emission spectral shift were analyzed using Lippert-Mataga, Reichardt-Dimroth and Kamlet-Taft equations. Moreover, UV-Vis absorption and emission frequencies were correlated with Hammett substituent constants applying the linear free energy relationships. DFT calculations of the investigated dyes were accomplished to determine their structural and electronic properties.

AB - The aim of this study was the development of a non-toxic, biosynthetic antimicrobial agent which selectively acts on only one type of microorganism, and preserves the microbiota. Antimicrobial performance of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) extract was examined against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, as well as yeasts Candida albicans and Saccharomyces boulardii. Also, the cytotoxicity of Ag NPs was examined toward pre-osteoblast cells. The synthetic conditions-concentration of extract, temperature, and pH-were optimized to prepare silver colloids with different particle size distributions and long-term stability. The obtained samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and absorption spectroscopy. The smaller-sized Ag NPs ( 10-20 nm), prepared at a lower temperature (20 degrees C), showed better antimicrobial performance against E. coli compared to larger ones ( 40-60 nm), prepared at high temperature (100 degrees C). On the other hand, both samples did not display any toxic action against bacteria S. aureus, or yeasts C. albicans and S. boulardii. Non-cytotoxic behavior of Ag NPs toward pre-osteoblast cells was observed for the concentrations of silver lt = 2.25 and lt = 4.5 mg L-1 for 10-20 and 40-60 nm-sized Ag NPs, respectively. Biosynthesized Ag NPs by horsetail extract display selective toxic action against E. coli at the ecologically acceptable concentration level.

AB - A novel impregnation process for the fabrication of cotton nanocomposite with strong antimicrobial activity against antibiotics-resistant bacteria and yeast was developed. The impregnation process includes the sol-gel treatment of fabric with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane in the first step, and synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) on the fabric surface in the second step. The in situ synthesis of the CuO/Cu2O NPs was based on the adsorption of Cu2+-ions by the introduced amino groups of the sol-gel coating. The adsorbed Cu2+-ions are subsequently reduced in the alkaline solution of NaBH4. X-ray diffraction measurements confirmed the formation of CuO/Cu2O NPs. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectrometry analyses indicate that the particle size, agglomeration, and amounts of synthesized NPs were highly affected by the initial concentration of CuSO(4)solution. The toxicity of nanocomposites to human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and antimicrobial activity against Gram-negativeEscherichia coliATCC 25922,E. coliATCC BAA 2469, andKlebsiella pneumoniaeATCC BAA 2146, and Gram-positive bacteriaStaphylococcus aureusATCC 25923,S. aureusATCC 43300 and yeastCandida albicansATCC 24433 strongly depended on the copper content. In addition to excellent antimicrobial activity, controlled release of Cu2+-ions from the fabrics into physiological saline solution was obtained.

AB - Wooden cultural heritage serves as a very important source of information for historians and researchers. Also, it imposes an obligation on the science to keep this legacy for future generations in a proper condition. Among other techniques of conservation of wooden cultural heritage, a very suitable method is impregnation of the wood with the polymer, whereby the wood/polymer composites are formed. This paper describes the method of preparing the wood/polymer composites based on beechwood, using five different monomer systems. The method of lyophilization and subsequent polymerization by gamma radiation was used. After lyophilization and immersing in the monomer solutions, the wood samples were dried and irradiated with a dose of 25 kGy and different gamma irradiation dose rates. The weight of the samples before and after this procedure was measured. Also, changes in the mechanical properties of wood (compression test) before and after treatment were examined. We also examined the effect of radiation dose rate on polymerization. Based on the weight differences, dose rates and materials characterization we determined which of the monomer solution and dose rate are the most suitable for making beechwood/polymer composites.

AB - The antibacterial ability of in situ prepared nanometer-sized silver particles, immobilized in agar-agar films, was studied as a function of the concentration of co-dopant, magnesium ions. Content of inorganic components in hybrid films was determined using inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy, and found to be low ( lt 2 wt.-%). Morphology of prepared hybrid films, studied by transmission electron microscopy, revealed the presence of non-agglomerated and randomly distributed 10-20 nm silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) within the agar-agar matrices. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the distinct chemical interaction between Ag NPs and polymer chains. Thermogravimetric analysis, as well as the determination of tensile strength, Young's modulus, and elongation at break showed improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties of agar-agar matrices upon the incorporation of Ag NPs due to high compatibility between the hydrophilic organic component and inorganic components. The complete microbial reduction of Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus was observed for all agar-silver films, while satisfactory results were observed for Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( gt = 99.6%). The release of Ag+ ions is suppressed by the increase of the concentration of Mg2+ ions and it was found to be significantly smaller ( lt = 0.24 ppm) than the harmful ecological level (1 ppm).

AB - Commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticles are widely exploited as an efficient photocatalyst. In the textile domain, these nanoparticles are used for the production of self-cleaning, highly UV protective textiles, with an antimicrobial activity. The disposed textile products may end up in a landfill where they are subjected to the biodegradation process. Considering the importance of the later, this study discusses the biodegradation behaviour of cotton fabric impregnated with commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized on cotton fabric was proved by the photodegradation of dyes C. I. Acid Orange 7 and methylene blue in aqueous solution. Biodegradation of fabrics was assessed by soil burial test in periods of 3, 9 and 18 days. Chemical and morphological changes induced by biodegradation were analyzed by FTIR, SEM and EDS. A colour of the samples gradually changed from white to yellow/brown due to rotting. SEM analysis revealed a severe destruction of the control and impregnated cotton fibres after 18 days of soil burial which was in line with visual appearance of completely damaged fabrics. The results confirmed that biodegradation behaviour of both the control and impregnated sample was equivalent, indicating that P25 TiO2 nanoparticles did not inhibit the biodegradation process of cellulose.

The results confirmed that biodegradation behaviour of both the control and impregnated sample was equivalent, indicating that P25 TiO2 nanoparticles did not inhibit the biodegradation process of cellulose.",

AB - This study discusses the possibility of fabrication of textile nanocomposites with antimicrobial activity against antibiotics-resistant bacterial strains and yeast. Modification of cotton fabric with oxalic acid solutions of different concentrations provided free carboxyl groups for binding of Cu2+ -ions from copper (II) sulfate solution which were further reduced with sodium borohydride in alkaline solution. An increase in the concentration of applied oxalic acid resulted in larger amounts of free carboxyl groups on the cotton fibers, Cu2+ -ions uptake and total amounts of Cu-based nanoparticles after reduction. XPS and XRD analyses suggested that nanoparticles mainly consisted of CuO with fractions of Cu2O. Fabricated textile nanocomposites ensured maximum reduction of Gram-negative E. coli ATCC 25922, E. coli NCTC 13846, E. coli ATCC BAA-2469, K. pneumoniae ATCC-BAA 2146 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Gram-positive bacteria S. aureus ATCC 25923 and S. aureus ATCC 43300 and yeast C. albicans ATCC 24433. Additionally, controlled release of Cu2+ -ions from fabrics into the physiological saline solution was obtained within 24 hours.

AB - Nano-finishing of textile materials with metal and metal oxide nanoparticles has been in the focus of science and textile industry almost two decades. The emergence of bacteria resistance to silver nanoparticles due to over-use, cheaper precursor salts and excellent antimicrobial activity recently brought copper and copper oxide nanoparticles to scientific attention particularly for the utilization in the field of medical textiles. This paper is aimed to give an overview of the latest achievements in the finishing of cellulose fabrics with copper-based nanoparticles. Special emphasis has been given to difficulties met throughout the characterization of such textile nanocomposites caused by the copper instability. In addition the effect of various chemical modifications of cellulose fibers prior to impregnation with copper-based nanoparticles on their binding efficiency was considered. Much attention has been also paid to antimicrobial activity of such textile nanocomposites and the possibility to develop efficient antimicrobial cellulose wound dressings. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - This study discusses the possibility of in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles (NPs) on cotton and viscose rayon fabrics previously modified with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) of different concentrations, with the aim to obtain antibacterial protection. The changes in the chemical structure of the fibers caused by the modification with BTCA were assessed by FTIR spectroscopy. The higher the concentration of the applied BTCA, the larger the amounts of free carboxyl groups in both fabrics. AAS analysis showed that the samples modified with higher concentration of BTCA provided larger Cu2+-ions uptake and consequently, higher content of Cu after Cu2+-ions reduction. The presence of Cu-based NPs on the fabrics was confirmed by FESEM and EDS analyses. XRD analysis revealed that NPs appeared as a mixture of CuO and Cu2O. Synthesized NPs imparted excellent antibacterial activity to both fabrics against E. coli and S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus.

AB - The visible-light-responsive inorganic-organic hybrid was prepared by surface modification of commercial TiO2 powder (Degussa P25) with 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The optical absorption of the hybrid material is red-shifted compared to unmodified TiO2 powder due to the surface charge transfer complex (CTC) formation. The experimental results are supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the corresponding model cluster. The calculated electronic excitation spectrum is in agreement with the measured reflection spectrum of surface-modified TiO2 powder with 4-CP. The paramagnetic species, generated in the unmodified and surface modified TiO2 powders upon excitation with ultraviolet and visible light, were identified using low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The formation of trapped electrons (Ti(III) centers) and the persistent oxygen-centered organic radicals indicated the photoinduced electron transfer from the chemisorbed 4-chlorophenol to the conduction band of TiO2.

AB - Antibacterial and antifungal ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by functionalized magnetite (Fe3O4) with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and yeast Candida albicans. Characterization of materials including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optic emission spectroscopy technique followed each step during the course of nanocomposite preparation. The synthesized powder consists of 30-50nm in size silver particles surrounded by clusters of smaller (approximate to 10nm) Fe3O4 particles. The content of silver in the nanocomposite powder was found to be slightly above 40 wt.-%. Concentration-dependent and time-dependent bacterial reduction measurements in dark indicated that use of Ag NPs leads to the complete reduction of E. coli and S. aureus even at the concentration level of silver as low as 40 g/mL. However, the negligible antifungal ability of synthesized nanocomposite was found against yeast C. albicans in the entire investigated concentration range (0.1-2.0mg/mL of the nanocomposite, i.e., 40-800 g/mL of silver). Complete inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus was achieved in five repeated cycles indicated that synthesized nanocomposite can perform under long-run working conditions. From the technological point of view, magnetic separation is the additional advantage of synthesized nanocomposite for potential use as an antibacterial agent.

AB - Size-dependent antimicrobial ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by amino-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) macroporous copolymer was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Inorganic/organic hybrids with distinctly different average sizes of Ag NPs (6.6 and 12.1 nm) were prepared by functionalization of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) with either 1,8-diaminooctane or ammonia, and consequent reduction of silver ions with amino groups. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared and UV-Vis reflection spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission measurements were used to characterize synthesized hybrid materials. Time- and concentration-dependent antimicrobial performances of prepared samples revealed higher reduction rates of E. coli when hybrid with smaller in size Ag NPs was used. The difference between rates of reduction of E. coli for different size Ag NPs is becoming more pronounced by decrease of the concentration of silver. POLYM. COMPOS., 40:2901-2907, 2019.

abstract = "Size-dependent antimicrobial ability of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by amino-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)) macroporous copolymer was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. POLYM. COMPOS., 40:2901-2907, 2019.",

AB - Thermal degradation properties of 5-(4-substitutedphenylazo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methy1-2-pyridones and 5-(4-substitutedphenylazo)-3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methy1-2-pyridones dyes, differing in electron withdrawing and electron donating substitttents in para-position of diazo components were examined. The structure of the synthesized compourtds has been confirmed by H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR, FITR, UV-Vis and XRD analysis techniques. The results obtained with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) - derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were combined with GC-mass spectral fragmentation to obtain thermal decomposition mechanism. Non-isothermal kinetics were monitored by application of TGA-DTG-DTA. For Kinetic behavior of the investigated dyes during their degradation in an inert atmosphere, Kissinger, Ozawa, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Alcahira-Sunose (KAS) isoconversional (model-free) methods were applied. It was found that different thermal stabilities of investigated dyes are the consequence of their different chemical structures, including diverse substituents.

AB - Eu3+ activated LaPO4 phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state method and irradiated to different high-doses gamma-radiation in the 0-4 MGy range. No effects of high-doses of high-energy radiation on phosphor's morphology and structure were observed, as documented by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. On the other hand, photoluminescence measurements showed that emission properties of phosphor were affected by gamma-radiation; changes in radiative properties being prominent for absorbed radiation doses up to 250 kGy after which no additional changes are observed. Judd-Ofelt analysis of emission spectra is performed to thoroughly investigate radiative properties of phosphors. Analysis showed that radiative transition probability of Eu3+ emission decreases while non-radiative probability increases upon gamma-irradiation. Quantum efficiency of emission is decreased from about 46% to 35% when Eu3+ doped LaPO4 powders are exposed to gamma-radiation of 250 kGy dose, showing no additional decrease for higher gamma-radiation doses.

AB - Environmental-friendly pectin-TiO2 nanocomposite aerogels were prepared via sol-gel process and subsequent drying under supercritical conditions. The first step includes dissolution of pectin in water, addition of proper amount of TiO2 colloid and crosslinking reaction induced in the presence of tert-butanol and zinc ions. Then, the gels are subjected to the solvent exchange and supercritical CO2 drying. The influence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the textural, mechanical, thermal and antibacterial properties of aerogels was investigated. Results indicate that in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) mechanical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of pectin-based aerogels are improved in comparison to the control pectin aerogels. It should be emphasized that the thermal conductivity of pectin-based aerogels (0.022-0.025Wm(-1) K-1) is lower than the thermal conductivity of air. Generally, the results propose that the pectin-TiO2 nanocomposite aerogels, as bio-based material, might have potential application for the storage of temperature-sensitive food.

AB - The TiO2 based hybrid supports with different functional groups (amino, glutaraldehyde or epoxy) were prepared and their influence on immobilization of dextransucrase (DS) was studied. Novel synthetic route for surface modification of TiO2 with amino and glutaraldehyde groups was developed taking advantage of charge transfer complex (CTC) formation between surface Ti atoms and salicylate-type of ligand (5 aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA)). The proposed coordination of 5-ASA to the surface of TiO2 powder and optical properties of CTC was presented. The pristine TiO2 and amino functionalized TiO2 have higher sorption capacity for DS (12.6 and 12.0 mg g(-1), respectively) compared to glutaraldehyde and epoxy activated supports (9.6 and 9.8 mg g(-1) respectively). However, immobilized enzyme to either glutaraldehyde or epoxy functionalized TiO2 have almost two times higher expressed activities compared to pristine TiO2 support (258, 235 and 142 IU g(-1), respectively). Thermal stability of enzyme immobilized on glutaraldehyde and epoxy functionalized supports was studied at 40 degrees C, as well as operational stability under long-run working conditions in repeated cycles. After five cycles, DS imobilized on glutaraldehyde activated support retained almost 70% of its initial expressed activity, while, after five cycles, performance of DS immobilized on epoxy activated support was significantly lower (15%).

AB - This study discusses the possibility of immobilization of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) onto poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) beads and foams that could be utilized for the removal of textile dyes from water by photodegradation. PCL foams were fabricated by environmentally friendly treatment of PCL beads in supercritical carbon dioxide. PCL beads and foams loaded with colloidal TiO2 NPs were used as photocatalysts for the removal of the textile dyes C.I. Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Basic Yellow 28 from aqueous solutions (10 mg L-1) under illumination that simulated sunlight. Unlike the PCL beads, the PCL foams provided complete discoloration of the dye solution within 24 h of illumination. The PCL foams also exhibited excellent floatability that was maintained for more than four weeks. Additionally, their photocatalytic activity was preserved within three repeated photodegradation cycles, indicating that the floating photocatalyst provided superior photocatalytic activity compared to the non-floating PCL beads.

Additionally, their photocatalytic activity was preserved within three repeated photodegradation cycles, indicating that the floating photocatalyst provided superior photocatalytic activity compared to the non-floating PCL beads.",

AB - This study discusses a novel approach for fabrication of floating photocatalyst which can be efficiently exploited for photodegradation of dyes in aqueous solutions. A fabrication of the floating photocatalyst consisted of two steps: transformation of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) beads (PCLb) into poly(epsilon-caprolactone) foam (PCLf) with porous structure in supercritical carbon-dioxide and subsequent loading of PCLf with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Morphological characterization of the PCLf before and after TiO2 NPs loading was carried out by FESEM. The presence of titanium on the surface and inside the PCLf was detected by EDX. Photocatalytical activity of the floating photocatalyst was investigated in aqueous solution of textile dyes C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7) and C.I. Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) which were exposed to lamp that simulates the sun light. In addition to sustainable floatability for a long period of time, developed floating photocatalyst exhibited high rate of photodegradation since the complete discoloration of AO7 and BY28 solutions and photocatalysts alone occurred after 300 and 180 min of illumination, respectively. Its photocatalytic activity was preserved after three repeated photodegradation cycles with unchanged chemical structure that was confirmed by FTIR analysis.

AB - The fabrication of antimicrobial textile nanocomposite by in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles on cotton fabrics modified with different polycarboxylic acids was discussed in this study. In order to evaluate the influence of carboxyl group content on Cu2+-ions adsorption, their subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride and formation of Cu-based nanoparticles, cotton fabrics were modified with succinic, citric and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acids. It was shown that the larger the number of carboxyl groups in applied acid, the larger the content of free carboxyl groups on the fibers and consequently, the larger the Cu2+-ions uptake and total amounts of Cu-based nanoparticles. On the basis of the XPS and XRD measurements, it was suggested that synthesized nanoparticles were mixture of Cu2O and CuO. Fabricated nanocomposites provided maximum reduction of Gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus and controlled release of Cu2+-ions in physiological saline solution which are necessary prerequisites for infection prevention.

AB - Surface modification of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) with the biologically active molecule pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B-6) was found to alter the optical properties. Microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the anatase TiO2 NPs had a narrow size distribution with an average diameter of 45 angstrom. The absorption onset of the surface-modified TiO2 samples was red-shifted by about 0.4 eV compared to the unmodified particles. The mode of binding between vitamin B-6 and the surface Ti atoms was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, the stability constant of the surface complex was found to be of the order 10(2) M-1. The experimental findings were supported by detailed quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). Agreement was found between the experimentally measured absorption spectra of the TiO2 NPs surface-modified with vitamin B-6 and the theoretically calculated electronic excitation spectra of the corresponding model system.

Biodegradation behavior was evaluated by standard test method ASTM 5988-03 based on determination of percentage conversions of carbon content to CO2 as well as by soil burial test and enzymatic hydrolysis with cellulase where the extent of biodegradation was estimated by the calculation of fabric weight loss. The morphological and chemical changes of fibers during biodegradation process were analyzed by SEM and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. The results obtained by all applied methods suggested that Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles hindered the biodegradation of investigated cotton and cotton/PET fabrics. Soil burial test indicated faster biodegradation of the impregnated blend compared to impregnated cotton fabric which is attributed to smaller amount of fabricated Ag nanoparticles on the blend proved by MS measurement. Similar trend was established by enzymatic hydrolysis of cotton fibers. Severe damage of cotton fibers in both fabrics due to biodegradation process was confirmed by SEM. However, the cotton fiber damage occurred to a lesser extent in the samples that were impregnated with Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles. PET fibers remained intact which was also indicated by FTIR analysis. AB - This study discusses the possibility of in situ photoreduction of Ag+-ions on the surface of titania nanotubes (TNTs) deposited on the cotton and cotton/PET fabrics in the presence of amino acid alanine and methyl alcohol. TNTs were synthetized by hydrothermal method. The proposed interaction between titania, alanine and Ag+-ions was based on the results obtained by FTIR measurements. In order to enhance the binding efficiency between TNTs and fibers, the fabrics were previously impregnated with polyethyleneimine. The presence of TNT/Ag nanocrystals on the surface of fibers was proved by SEM, AAS, XRD and XPS. Larger amount of silver was detected on the cotton fabric. Fabricated TiO2/Ag nanocrystals provided maximum reduction of bacteria E. coli which was preserved after five washing cycles despite significant release of silver. The perspiration fastness tests indicated that silver release did not depend on pH. The presence of TNT/Ag nanocrystals imparted maximum UV protection to fabrics.
