AB - Three new diphenyltin(IV) complexes, bis(3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1(2H)-yl)propanoato)diphenyltin(IV)
(1), bis(2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (2), and bis(2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxoquinolin1(2H)-yl)ethanoato)diphenyltin(IV) (3), were synthesized and characterized by elemental microanalysis, FT-IR
spectroscopy, and multinuclear (
1
H, 13C and 119Sn) NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structure of ligand precursor,
2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolinyl-1-(2H)-yl)acetic acid (HL2), has been determined by X-ray diffraction studies.
Asymmetric bidentate coordination of the carboxylato ligands and skew trapezoidal structures are assumed for
the synthesized complexes. In vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized diphenyltin(IV) complexes was evaluated against three human: MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375 (melanoma), HCT116 (colorectal carcinoma),
and three mouse tumor cell lines: 4T1 (breast carcinoma), B16 (melanoma), CT26 (colon carcinoma) using MTT
and CV assays. The IC50 values fall in the range from 0.1 to 3.7 μM. Flow cytometric analysis and fluorescent
microscopy suggest that complex 1 induces caspase-dependent apoptosis followed with strong blockade of cell
division in HCT116 cells. Since complex 1 showed ROS/RNS scavenging potential mentioned cytotoxicity was
not connected with oxidative stress.

AB - Three newly synthesized triphenyltin(iv) compounds, Ph3SnL1 (L1− = 3-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)propanoato), Ph3SnL2 (L2− = 2-(4-methyl-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato), and Ph3SnL3 (L3− = 2-(4-hydroxy-2-oxoquinolin-1(2H)-yl)ethanoato), were characterized by elemental microanalysis, FT-IR spectroscopy and multinuclear (1H, 13C and 119Sn) NMR spectroscopy. A single X-ray diffraction study indicates that compounds Ph3SnL1 and Ph3SnL2 exhibit a 1D zig-zag chain polymeric structure, which in the case of Ph3SnL2 is additionally stabilized by π-interactions. In addition, the synthesized compounds were further examined using density functional theory and natural bond orbital analysis. The compounds have been evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity against three human cell lines: MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375 (melanoma), HCT116 (colorectal carcinoma), and three murine cell lines: 4T1 (breast carcinoma), B16 (melanoma), CT26 (colon carcinoma) using MTT and CV assays. The IC50 values fall in the nanomolar range, indicating that these compounds possess better anticancer activity than cisplatin. The study of the effect of the newly developed drug Ph3SnL1 showed its plasticity in achieving an antitumor effect in vitro, which depends on the specificity of the phenotype and the redox status of the malignant cell line and ranges from the initiation of apoptotic cell death to the induction of differentiation to a more mature cell form. In the syngeneic model of murine melanoma, Ph3SnL1 showed the potential to reduce the tumor volume similar to cisplatin, but in a well-tolerated form and with low systemic toxicity, representing a significant advantage over the conventional drug.

AB - Without being aware of their chemical composition, many cultures have used herbaceous peony roots for medicinal purposes. Modern phytopreparations intended for use in human therapy require specific knowledge about the chemistry of peony roots and their biological activities. In this study, ethanol–water extracts were prepared by maceration and microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extractions (MAE and UAE, respectively) in order to obtain bioactive molecules from the roots of Paeonia tenuifolia L., Paeonia peregrina Mill., and Paeonia officinalis L. wild growing in Serbia. Chemical characterization; polyphenol and flavonoid content; antioxidant, multianti-enzymatic, and antibacterial activities of extracts; and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GID) of hot water extracts were performed. The strongest anti-cholinesterase activity was observed in PT extracts. The highest anti-ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical potential was observed in PP extracts, whereas against DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals), the best results were achieved with PO extracts. Regarding antibacterial activity, extracts were strongly potent against Bacillus cereus. A molecular docking simulation was conducted to gather insights into the binding affinity and interactions of polyphenols and other Paeonia-specific molecules in the active sites of tested enzymes. In vitro GID of Paeonia teas showed a different recovery and behavior of the individual bioactives, with an increased recovery of methyl gallate and digallate and a decreased recovery of paeoniflorin and its derivatives. PT (Gulenovci) and PP (Pirot) extracts obtained by UAE and M were more efficient in the majority of the bioactivity assays. This study represents an initial step toward the possible application of Paeonia root extracts in pharmacy, medicine, and food technologies.

AB - This study presents an analysis of films which consist of two layers; one layer is PVDF as the matrix, along with fillers BaTiO3 (BT), and the second is one bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) filled with Fe3O4. The mass fraction of BT in PVDF was 5%, and the samples were differentiated based on the duration of the mechanical activation of BT. This innovative PVDF laminate polymer with environmentally friendly fillers aligns with the concept of circular usage, resulting in a reduction in plastic content and potential improvement of the piezoelectric properties of the entire composite. This work presents new, multifunctional “green” packaging materials that potentially could be a good alternative to specific popular materials used for this purpose. The synthesis of the films was carried out using the hot press method. Tensile tests, water vapor permeability examination, and structural analyses using SEM-EDS and FTIR have been conducted. The sample PVDF/BT20/BNC/Fe3O4 exhibited the best barrier properties (impermeability to water vapor), while the highest tensile strength and toughness were exhibited by the PVDF/BT5/BNC/Fe3O4 sample.

AB - The aim of this study was to analyze in detail the phytochemical composition of amaranth (AMJ), red beet (RBJ), and broccoli (BCJ) microgreens and cold-pressed juices and to evaluate the antioxidant and sensory properties of the juices. The results showed the presence of various phenolic compounds in all samples, namely betalains in amaranth and red beet microgreens, while glucosinolates were only detected in broccoli microgreens. Phenolic acids and derivatives dominated in amaranth and broccoli microgreens, while apigenin C-glycosides were most abundant in red beet microgreens. Cold-pressing of microgreens into juice significantly altered the profiles of bioactive compounds. Various isothiocyanates were detected in BCJ, while more phenolic acid aglycones and their derivatives with organic acids (quinic acid and malic acid) were identified in all juices. Microgreen juices exhibited good antioxidant properties, especially ABTS•+ scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Microgreen juices had mild acidity, low sugar content, and good sensory acceptability and quality with the typical flavors of the respective microgreen species. Cold-pressed microgreen juices from AMJ, RBJ, and BCJ represent a rich source of bioactive compounds and can be characterized as novel functional products.

abstract = "The aim of this study was to analyze in detail the phytochemical composition of amaranth (AMJ), red beet (RBJ), and broccoli (BCJ) microgreens and cold-pressed juices and to evaluate the antioxidant and sensory properties of the juices. AB - This study aimed to evaluate the physical (particle size and ζ-potential) and techno-functional properties (emulsifying and foaming) of goat milk powders enriched with grape pomace seed extract (TME), as promising food ingredients in the formulation of functional food. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, along with advanced chemometric tools were employed as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for analyzing TME powders. All powders exhibited a unimodal particle size distribution and ζ-potential values more negative than −36 mV. ATR-FTIR and Raman spectroscopies combined with principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated distinct separation among skimmed goat milk (M), thermally treated skimmed goat milk (TM), and TME powders in different spectral regions (amide I, II, III, and fingerprint region). This separation resulted from the applied thermal treatment, the presence of phenolic compounds and their complexes with goat milk proteins, and the formation of Maillard reaction products. SEM analysis confirmed the different morphology and shapes of M, TM and TME powders. The 0.1% solutions of M, TM and TME exhibited good emulsifying properties (emulsion activity index and emulsion stability index) but showed poor foaming properties, except for the M sample. Solution concentrations higher than 0.1% for all samples (0.5% and 1.0%) displayed poor techno-functional properties. In summary, a schematic representation of the arrangement of casein micelles in 0.1% M, TM and TME samples, on oil/water and air/water surfaces was provided. The production of TME powders represents an innovative strategy for waste recovery in the production of functional food ingredients with good emulsifying properties.

AB - The hybrid multifunctional magnetic organic/inorganic composite materials, with addition of optimal filler type and quantities are attractive due to wide range of potential application, from various pressure sensors, through smart packaging, to tissue engineering and medicine. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of polyvinylidene fluoride/nanocellulose/magnetite@BaTiO3 hybrid films were investigated. The presented study revealed significant impact of nanocellulose (NC) content on formation of the polymorphs of PVDF, responsible for ferro-, piezo- and pyroelectric properties. The structural characterization, XRD and Raman measurements confirmed enhancement of the β and γ phases when the loading of NC higher then 4 wt% in multi-component hybrid films. The saturation magnetization value gradually raises with increasing amount of NC and reaches its maximum value of 41.2 emu/g at content of 4 wt% NC. Further, addition of NC decreases saturation magnetization value regardless of constant amount of magnetite, indicating optimal content of NC substrate for co-precipitation of Fe3O4 onto NC matrix.

AB - Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are transferred to vegetables primarily through
agricultural soil or irrigation water. PTEs in agricultural soil originate from pedogenic and
anthropogenic sources. In most cases, soil contamination with these elements happens via river
systems or air pollution. Furthermore, food is now imported from many regions and countries, where
it is grown in various conditions and on various agricultural lands. Peppers (Capsicum annuum) are
popular vegetables in Serbia and worldwide. They are consumed in numerous dishes as fresh fruits,
spices, or ingredients. Peppers are reach source of carotenoids, vitamins, antioxidant compounds,
and other nutritive compounds. This study aimed to estimate the human exposure to thirteen PTEs
present in fresh, dried, and processed peppers obtained from the Serbian market. The exposure
assessment was conducted for people in four regions of Serbia by calculating the target hazard
quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR). The comparison across areas was made due to
significant disparities in pepper consumption between them.

AB - The composition and anticholinesterase activity of the dried MeOH extracts of Hieracium scheppigianum and H. naegelianum underground parts (rhizomes and roots), as well as the anticholinesterase activity of the dried, previously chemically characterised MeOH extracts of the flowering aerial parts of these two and 26 other Hieracium species in the strict sense (s. str.), were investigated. Furthermore, the anticholinesterase activity of 12 selected secondary metabolites of these extracts was evaluated. Using semi-preparative LC-MS, five caffeoylquinic acids and the sesquiterpene lactone crepiside E were isolated from H. scheppigianum underground parts extract. All these compounds were also identified in the underground parts extract of H. naegelianum. Quantitative LC-MS analysis showed that the analysed underground parts extracts were rich in both caffeoylquinic acids (139.77 and 156.62 mg/g of extract, respectively) and crepiside E (126.88 and 116.58 mg/g). In the Ellman method, the tested extracts showed an interesting anti-AChE and/or anti-BChE activity (IC50=0.56–1.58 mg/mL), which can be explained, at least partially, by the presence of some of their constituents. Among the metabolites tested, the best activity was revealed for the flavonoids apigenin, luteolin and diosmetin, and the sesquiterpene lactone 8-epiixerisamine A (IC50=68.09–299.37 μM).

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.",

AB - Multifunctional lignin bio-based adsorbent, b-LMS, was obtained via inverse copolymerization in the suspension of acryloyl modified kraft lignin (KfL-AA) and bio-based trimethylolpropane triacrylate (bio-TMPTA). Morphological and structural characterization of KfL-AA and b-LMS was performed using BET, FTIR, Raman, NMR, TGA, SEM, and XPS techniques. The b-LMS microspheres with 253 ± 42 μm diameters, 69.4 m2 g−1 surface area, and 59% porosity efficiently adsorb Malachite Green (MG), Tartrazine (T), and Methyl Red (MR) dye. The influence of pH, pollutant concentration, temperature, and time on the removal efficiency was studied in a batch mode. Favorable and spontaneous processes with high adsorption capacities e.g. 116.8 mg g−1 for MG, 86.8 mg g−1 for T, and 68.6 mg g−1 for MR indicate the significant adsorptive potential of b-LMS. Results from diffusional and single mass transfer resistance studies indicate that pore diffusion is a rate-limiting step. Theoretical calculations confirmed a higher affinity of b-LMS to cationic dye MG compared with an anionic and neutral one, i.e. T and MR, respectively. The data fitting from a flow system, using semi-empirical equations and Pore Surface Diffusion Modelling (PSDM) provided breakthrough point determination. The results from the desorption and competitive adsorption study proved the exceptional performance of b-LMS. Moreover, sulfation of b-LMS, i.e.production of b-LMS-OSO3H, introduced high-affinity sulfate groups with respect to cationic dye and cations. Developed methodology implements the principle of sustainable development and offers concept whose results contribute to the minimization of environmental pollution.

In this study,
magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized via suspension
copolymerization while characterization was performed by various methods in order
to obtain an efficient sorbent for the aniline removal from an aqueous solution.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed characteristic vibrational
bands which suggested successful synthesis of MIP, nitrogen gas adsorptiondesorption measurements as well as mercury porosimetry have shown that the most
dominant pores were mesopores, while scanning electron microscopy with energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) confirmed a 3D spherical porous

AB - The overall quality of processed food depends on many processing parameters such as temperature,
processing time, mixing speed, pressure, pH value, size of food pieces, type of added ingredients, etc. The
goal of food products devel- opment is not only to improve the quality of the final product but also to reduce the
energy consumption and to improve resources management. Independent evaluation of a single parameter or
response is not the best way to set and optimize experiments, because improving one response by controlling
one parameter can negatively affect other responses. Experi- mental design is frequently used for experiment
planning when multiple variables should be optimized, while the desirability function allows the determination of
operating conditions that provide the “most desirable” response values. The desirability function allows the
optimization of several responses simultaneously and the determination of the overall/cumulative/global quality.
In this way, it is possible to determine the most suitable conditions for achieving the best overall product quality.
In the desirability function, all responses are transformed into dimensionless individual desirability functions
(di), which take values from 0 to 1. The value 0 indicates an undesirable response of the system, while the value
1 represents the most de-sirable response. All values between 0 and 1 indicate more or less desirable responses.
There are three different equations for evaluating individual desirability functions depending on whether it is
ideal for the response to be maximal, minimal or to have some target value. After calculating the individual
desirability functions, they are combined into one global/overalldesirability function (D) [1,2]. If the value of this
function is different from 0, it means that for all responses, the desired responses were achieved at the same
time. If the value of the D is equal to 0, it means that for at least one response the desired response has not
been achieved. The overall desirability function represents the geometric mean of individual de- sirability
functions. When applying the experimental design, this means that one composite desirability function is
obtained for each experiment. The function D with the highest value represents the experimental conditions
under which the most optimal responses of the system are obtained, i.e. the best quality of the final product.
Various quality parameters of foodproducts, such as color, taste, odor, the content of minerals, vitamins, fibers,
appearance, texture, etc., can be measured as system responses. However, despite the advantages of this
approach, the traditional approach that uses the optimiza-tion of only one factor and one response is still the
most used.

AB - This study investigates the effects of ultrasound, in combination with chemical pretreatments, on the quality attributes (total phenolic and carotenoid content, antioxidant activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH)), ferric-reducing ability (FRAP), CIE L* a* b* color, non-enzymatic browning, rehydration ratio, textural and morphological properties) of red pepper subjected to drying (hot air drying or freeze drying). The fractional factorial design was used to assess the impact of factors. The global Derringer desirability function was used to determine the optimal conditions for the best quality attributes of dried pepper. The drying method influenced total phenolic content, a* (redness), and initial rehydration ratio; pretreatment time significantly affected FRAP antiradical activity, a*, chroma and non-browning index, while pH-value had a significant effect on the texture of dried pepper. Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.

Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.",

AB - In the present study, rosehip (Rosa canina L.) extract was successfully encapsulated in phospholipid liposomes using a single-step procedure named the proliposome method. Part of the obtained liposomes was subjected to UV irradiation and non-treated (native) and UV-irradiated liposomes were further characterized in terms of encapsulation efficiency, chemical composition (HPLC analysis), antioxidant capacity, particle size, PDI, zeta potential, conductivity, mobility, and antioxidant capacity. Raman spectroscopy as well as DSC analysis were applied to evaluate the influence of UV irradiation on the physicochemical properties of liposomes. The encapsulation efficiency of extract-loaded liposomes was higher than 90%; the average size was 251.5 nm; the zeta potential was −22.4 mV; and the conductivity was found to be 0.007 mS/cm. UV irradiation did not cause a change in the mentioned parameters. In addition, irradiation did not affect the antioxidant potential of the liposome–extract system. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the extract was completely covered by the lipid membrane during liposome entrapment, and the peroxidation process was minimized by the presence of rosehip extract in liposomes. These results may guide the potential application of rosehip extract-loaded liposomes in the food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic industries, particularly when liposomal sterilization is needed.

AB - Despite presenting a practical approach for the characterization of the environmental risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) derived from steel production facilities, the analysis of the spatial distribution of bioavailable PTEs concentrations in the soil is frequently overlooked in the management of polluted sites. In this study, the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable forms of PTEs were investigated in soils surrounding the largest Serbian steel production plant. The correlation and geostatistical analysis indicated their pronounced variability suggesting the anthropogenic origin of most investigated elements, apparently from the steel production facility. The detailed visualization of variables and observations derived by self-organizing maps (SOMs) revealed the homologies in PTEs’ distribution patterns, implying the common origin of some elements. These observations were confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The аpplied approach supports a comprehensive assessment of contaminated sites' ecological and health risks and provides a basis for soil remediation.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

AB - This study aimed to characterize mixtures of goat milk proteins and Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM) extracts (aqueous, AE and polysaccharides, PE). The mixtures showed stable particles with ζ-potential more negative than −41.1 mV. The addition of AMB extracts to goat milk did not result in a significant particle size change, whereas their addition to heated goat milk significantly increased mean particle diameter (from 194 nm to 225 nm). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that ABM extracts provoked changes in the secondary structure of goat milk proteins and interactions between polysaccharides and milk proteins predominantly via hydrogen and/or glycoside bonds and hydrophobic interactions. The milk protein profiles revealed proteolytic activity in mixtures with AE resulting in the formation of five new polypeptides. The different microstructures of mixtures with AE and PE were found by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A schematic representation of possible milk proteins-ABM extracts interactions has been given.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800°C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - This study aimed to develop active, biodegradable materials for food packaging by incorporating sage extract (SE) within a zein-gelatin blend by electrospinning and solvent casting. The fabrication techniques, SE incorporation, and its content (5, 10% w/w) determined the materials’ properties. Electrospinning produced 0.36–0.53 mm thick, non-transparent fibrous mats (mean fiber diameter 1.12–1.36 µm). Solvent casting generated 0.34–0.41 mm thick, transparent continuous films. The analysis indicated the constituents’ compatibility, homogenous dispersion, and efficient SE incorporation without strong chemical interactions and phase separation. The solvent-cast films presented more ordered structures, higher mechanical resistance, elongation, and water vapor barrier performance than the electrospun mats. The SE-incorporating formulations showed phenolics’ delivery ability to food simulants influenced by structure, SE content, and media polarity. The electrospun mats expressed higher DPPH• radicals’ inhibition, while the solvent-cast films showed stronger Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli growth inhibition, increased by SE incorporation. All formulations showed rapid complete bio-disintegration in compost (18–25 days).

AB - Research background. In the recent years, considerable attention has been given to selenium status since its deficiency is linked with various disorders and affects at least 13 % of world population. Additionally, mushrooms are known to possess pronounced capacity for absorption of various micronutrients, including Se, from soil/substrate. Here, we investigate the possibility of using Se-rich zeolitic tuff as a supplement for production of selenized mushroom. Furthermore, the impact of the enrichment on the activity of anti-oxidant enzymes and biological potential of Coriolus versicolor medicinal mushroom is studied. Experimental approach. Se(IV)-and Se(VI)-modified natural zeolitic tuff from the Ser-bian deposit Zlatokop was used as supplement for mushroom cultivation. To examine the effectiveness of selenium enrichment, we determined total selenium with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), together with the activity of antioxidant enzymes in fresh fruiting bodies and biological potential of methanolic extracts. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the appropriate tests for: inhibition of lipid peroxidation, DPPH free radical scavenging assay, Fe(III)-reducing antioxidant power assay and ability of chelating Fe2+ ions. The antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens was measured by broth microdilution assay. Additionally, chemical composition of the prepared extracts was studied using UV-Vis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Results and conclusions. Content of selenium detected in biofortified C. versicolor was even 470 times higher than in control on dry mass basis ((140.7±3.8) vs (0.3±0.1) µg/g), proving that Se-rich zeolitic tuff is an excellent supplement for mushroom production. Furthermore, the results of monitoring the activity of antioxidant enzymes revealed that most of the Se-enriched mushrooms exhibited higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and lower glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities than control. Due to higher amounts of enzymes, which can quickly catalyze the reduction of superoxide radicals, the quality of selenium-enriched mushrooms is preserved for a longer period of time. Investigation of biological potential indicated that Se-enriched mushroom methanolic extracts, generally, expressed enhanced antioxidant properties. Additionally, extracts showed antibacterial activity against all tested pathogenic microorganisms. Novelty and scientific contribution. Cultivation of mushrooms on Se-enriched zeolitic tuff is a new technological approach for obtaining Se-fortified food/supplements with enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

AB - In this study, in order to develop zein-based, edible, functional food-contact materials in different forms incorporating sage extract (10, 20, and 30%), solvent casting and electrospinning were employed. The study aimed to assess the effects of the applied techniques and the extract's incorporation on the materials' properties. The solvent casting generated continuous and compact films, where the extract's incorporation provided more homogenous surfaces. The electrospinning resulted in non-woven mats composed of ribbon-like fibers in the range of 1.275-1.829 mu m, while the extract's incorporation provided thinner and branched fibers. The results indicated the compatibility between the materials' constituents, and efficient and homogenous extract incorporation within the zein matrices, with more probable interactions occurring during the solvent casting. All of the formulations had a high dry matter content, whereas the mats and the formulations incorporating the extract had higher solubility and swelling in water. The films and mats presented similar DPPH center dot and ABTS(center dot+) radical scavenging abilities, while the influence on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium bacteria, and the growth inhibition, were complex. The antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the materials were more potent after the extract's incorporation. Overall, the results highlight the potential of the developed edible materials for use as food-contact materials with active/bioactive functionality.

AB - Highly effective lignin-based microspheres were prepared by inverse copolymerization of lignin (kraft) from suspension, with poly(ethylene imine) and amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (A-LMS_Fe3O4) or manganese(IV)oxide nanoparticles (A-LMS_MnO2). The XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, TEM techniques, including the porosity determination, were performed to analyze morphological and structural properties of synthesized microspheres. The effect of pH, the adsorbent dosage, temperature and contact duration on a batch-mode adsorption efficiency of arsenate and chromate (oxy)anions removal was tested. Spontaneous adsorption was found to be feasible, reaching the adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) (62.9 mg g-1), As(V) (47.8 mg g-1) by A-LMS_Fe3O4, and of Cr(VI) (73.9 mg g-1), As(V) (62.5 mg g-1) using A-LMS_MnO2 adsorbent. Fast removal rates were confirmed via kinetic study, using pseudo-second order, the Weber-Morris and the single resistance mass-transfer model, with a limiting step of the diffusion transport through pores. The correlation of fixed-bed-column results with Bohart-Adams, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and Dose Response models displayed that breakthrough behavior was influenced by flow rate and the inlet concentration. Significant potential of produced bio-adsorbent is further confirmed by the pore surface diffusion modeling, desorption study and adsorption from multi-component system using artificial water.

abstract = "Highly effective lignin-based microspheres were prepared by inverse copolymerization of lignin (kraft) from suspension, with poly(ethylene imine) and amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (A-LMS_Fe3O4) or manganese(IV)oxide nanoparticles (A-LMS_MnO2). Significant potential of produced bio-adsorbent is further confirmed by the pore surface diffusion modeling, desorption study and adsorption from multi-component system using artificial water.",
