AB - Failure analysis of welded joint with multiple defects was performed taking into account the effect of all defects, not just a dominant one. Four cases of multiple defects in welded joint under the uniaxial tensile loading were investigated using extended Finite Element Method. Two-dimensional Finite Element Models were made according to the tensile specimens with initial crack located in a critical area of welded joint. For each multiple defects case, numerical simulation was performed with three initial crack depth. Engineering Critical Analysis was made using Failure Assessment Diagrams for each defect that was determined as critical for its welded joint case. Numerical simulation showed that the geometry of the most prominent one from a point of view of structural integrity. It was concluded that the vertical misalignment in combination with a secondary defect, had the most adverse effect which can lead to failure of welded structure.

AB - Crack size and undermatching effects on fracture behavior of undermatched welded joints are presented and analyzed. Experimental and numerical analysis of the fracture behavior of high-strength low-alloyed (HSLA) steel welded joints with so-called small and large crack in undermatched weld metal and the base metal was performed, as a part of more extensive research previously conducted. J integral was determined by direct measurement using special instrumentation including strain gauges and a CMOD measuring device. Numerical analysis was performed by 3D finite element method (FEM) with different tensile properties in BM and WM. Results of J-CMOD curves evaluation for SUMITEN SM 80P HSLA steel and its weld metal (WM) are presented and analyzed for small and large cracks in tensile panels. This paper is focused on some new numerical results and observations on crack tip fields and constraint effects of undermatching and crack size keeping in mind previously performed experiments on the full-scale prototype. In this way, a unique combined approach of experimental investigation on the full-scale proto-type and tensile panels, as well as numerical investigation on mismatching and crack size effects, is achieved.

AB - In order to develop a non-standard method for determining the resistance to fracture and damage of pipeline materials, a new geometry of ring-shaped specimens with sharp notches or cracks has been defined. The need to develop a new method for testing of the specimens cut from the pipes arises due to the difficulties in determination of fracture mechanics parameters on thin-walled pressure pipelines, especially those with a smaller cross-section, by application of the standard procedures/specimens. Previous studies dealing with the topic of pipeline testing by non-standard methods are presented in the introductory part of the paper. In the experimental part of the research, tests on PRNT (Pipe Ring Notched Tension) and SENT (Single Edge Notched Tension) specimens are performed. Samples of these specimens were produced by SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) technique of additive production from PA12 (polyamide PA 2200) material. For the purpose of this study, a tool that is protected at the national level (in Serbia) as intellectual property is used for testing of the ring-shaped PRNT specimens. Tensile testing of both types of specimens is monitored by Aramis GOM 2M system; its operation is based on the method of digital image correlation, DIC. Additionally, finite element analyses are conducted on the PRNT and SENT geometries, enabling the calculation of the fracture mechanics parameter – Stress intensity factor K. It is concluded that the presented procedure based on the PRNT specimen has a good potential for use as a non-standard method for fracture resistance examination of pipeline materials. It can be performed on the specimens cut directly from the pipes (new or from exploitation). The dependence of the fracture resistance on the stress concentrator size is not pronounced, which means that the results depend dominantly on the material properties, rather than on geometry.

AB - The effect of the shielding gas arc welding process on the cavitation resistance of the three-component aluminum alloy AlMg4.5Mn and its welded joints was investigated. Welding was performed using the GTAW and GMAW processes in a shielded atmosphere of pure argon. After the welding, metallographic tests were performed, and the hardness distribution in the welded joints was determined. The ultrasonic vibration method was used to evaluate the base metal’s and weld metal’s resistance to cavitation. The change in mass was monitored to determine the cavitation rates. The morphology of the surface damage of the base metal and weld metal due to cavitation was monitored using scanning electron microscopy to explain the effect of the shielding gas arc welding process on their resistance to cavitation.

AB - This paper is based on extensive research about the influence of multiple different welded joint defects on the integrity of welded structures. In this particular case, the focus was on the heat affected zone and its different sub regions - up to this point, it was observed as a whole, with homogeneous mechanical properties along its cross-section. Due to the need to describe its behaviour in more detail, it was concluded that metallographic characterisation of the heat affected zone is necessary. Metallographic tests have provided a detailed insight into the micro-structures with the heat affected zone, which would be difficult to predict in this case, due to specific conditions, i.e., a welding technology which was adopted with the purpose of deliberately causing a number of defects in the welded joint. This would result in a more realistic distribution of mechanical properties along the heat affected zone, which in turn would provide more accurate input data for numerical simulations, since the use of finite element method will be the next step in this research.

AB - The research represents the ongoing investigation of the welded joints behavior made of low-carbon low-alloyed steel in the presence of different multiple defects. Following the initial experimental and numerical analyses performed on low-grade steel, a set of experiments were performed with specimens made of steel EN 1.0044 (commercial designation S275JR), along with development of new numerical models. Four combinations were made, including defects like undercuts, excess weld metal, misalignment, weld face sagging and incomplete root penetration, considering that these defects are often encountered in practice, and can appear simultaneously. The finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the experiments. Tensile properties of the HAZ and weld metal were calculated using strain measurements by the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The finite element method (FEM) results were in good agreement with the experimental ones.

abstract = "The research represents the ongoing investigation of the welded joints behavior made of low-carbon low-alloyed steel in the presence of different multiple defects. The finite element method (FEM) results were in good agreement with the experimental ones.",

AB - In this work, the heat-resistant cast steel HP40Nb alloy, produced in the form of a centrifugally cast tube, which failed after 11.4 years service is investigated. The microstructure is examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the phases observed are analysed using an energy dispersive X-ray analyser system (EDS). Additionally, fractography is performed on the fractured surface of failed specimens. Mechanical properties of the tube are evaluated by using tensile and Charpy impact testing at room temperature (298 K). Main results indicate that the failed tube microstructure consists of an austenitic matrix and a continuous network of primary eutectic carbides of two types: one rich in Nb (bright particles), and one rich in Cr (dark particles). These carbides are NbC and complex M7C3 (M = Cr, Ni, Fe) type. The brittle intergranular fracture mode is explained by the presence of massive precipitation and coarsening of intergranular carbides at grain boundaries. Lower tensile properties of the in-service exposed tube might be correlated to the morphological, chemical, and distribution changes of precipitates during service at high temperature. Decreased values of hardness can be attributed to increase in grain size, as well as due to the decomposition of Cr-carbide during the heat treatment at temperatures above 1073 K.

AB - Composition and production procedures of the mullite-based coatings for the protection of metal surfaces in the conditions of cavitation, wear and corrosion were investigated. An ultrasonic vibration method according to the ASTM G32 standard was used to characterize the coating. The change in the mass of samples as a function of the cavitation time was monitored and the cavitation rate was determined. The occurrence and development of the coating surface damage were monitored using a scanning electron microscope. Based on the value of cavitation rate and analysis of the surface damage morphology, the cavitation resistance of coating was determined. Coatings have shown the satisfactory resistance in the conditions of cavitation and possibility of application for the protection of parts of equipment in metallurgy and mining.

AB - The effect of proof over-pressure on pressure vessels structural integrity is analysed. Risk based approach is applied using Failure Analysis Diagramme to assess likelihood of failure. Special attention is paid to crack-like defects detected by NDT regular testing which are unacceptable by standards, but difficult to be repaired. It was show, using two examples, that such defects can remain if some strict conditions are fulfilled. In any case, with or without crack-like defects, it was shown that testing of pressure vessels with significant over-pressure can cause much more problems than it has benefits, because it acts more like the first step in eventual failure, than being proof to anything.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present the application of
thin-walled beams on cargo raft load-bearing structure from
the aspect of strength and reliability. The beams have an
open cross section. Analytical and numerical determination
of equivalent stresses and deformations of open section thinwalled ‘U’ and ‘Z’ cantilever beams, loaded with torsion, is
presented. Work is divided into three parts. In the first part,
equivalent stress and deformation are obtained analytically
for cantilever beam model in the whole cross section. In the
second part, the finite element method is applied in beam
models, and the results are compared with the analytical
calculation. The third part presents the profiles installed in
load-bearing structures of vessels (rafts) and solutions are
shown to apply results of the presented analyses in order to
increase reliability. Finally, the design calculation of the raft
load-bearing structure is shown.
AB - Cilj ovog rada jeste da prikaže primenu tankozidih nosača
na noseće konstrukcije teretnog splava sa aspekta čvrstoće
i pouzdanosti.

AB - The selection of the electrode for repair welding is one of the activities needed before repairing machine parts. In this case, damages that have occurred in a burner pipe welded joint during manufacture or previous repair welding have resulted in the need to replace the previously used electrodes with more suitable ones for the exploitation conditions to which the burner is subjected. For this purpose, 2 specimens welded with 2 different electrodes (Castolin and 6825 and PIVA 25/20 B) are cut from the pipes and tested. Micro- and macro-analyses of these specimens are performed, along with hardness testing. It is concluded that the Castolin 6825 electrode is better suited for burner pipe repair welding. Following this, the test repair welding of the burner pipe is performed. In addition to penetrant tests of the welded pipe, a short overview of the techno-economic analysis of the repaired pipe is given, including the ratio of repair price to the price of manufacturing a new burner.
