dc.description.abstract | This study discusses the effect of silver nanoparticles on antibacterial activity of dyed cotton fabrics. Additionally, the influence of silver nanoparticles presence on the color change of cotton fabrics was studied. Cotton fabrics were dyed with direct dyes: C.I. Direct Yellow 86, C.I. Direct Red 79 and C. I. Direct Blue 78. Dyed fabrics were modified with colloidal silver nanoparticles that were synthesized without using any stabilizer. The antibacterial activity of fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Color change of cotton fabrics was evaluated via determination of CIE L*, a*and b* coordinates by reflection spectrophotometer. SEM analysis revealed that nearly spherical agglomerates of silver nanoparticles with dimensions between 40-80 nm were evenly deposited onto the surface of cotton fibers independently of applied dye. All cotton fabrics exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against both investigated bacteria. However, the presence of silver nanoparticles negatively affects the color of dyed cotton fabrics. This was particularly pronounced in the case of fabric that was dyed with yellow dye C.I. Direct Yellow 86. These results indicate that more attention should be paid on the order of dyeing and loading of colloidal silver nanoparticles. | sr |
