AB - In this work we investigated the influence of different deposition angles on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel thin films obtained by Glancing Angle Deposition. The films were deposited onto glass substrates at the angles of 65° and 85°. The structure of the films was studied by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic properties were analyzed using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy (MOKE). It was found that the variation in the deposition angle has a great influence on the porosity, crystallinity and surface roughness of the Ni films. The obtained changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in the magnetic properties. MOKE measurements revealed that the thinner films, deposited at the angle of 85°, have a 2.5 times higher coercivity in comparison with the films deposited at the lower angle, which can be ascribed to their higher porosity. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Zig-zag structure of the nickel thin film has been obtained using Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) technique. Glass substrate was positioned 75 degrees with respect to the substrate normal. The obtained nickel thin film was characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. Surface energy of the deposited thin film was determined by measuring the contact angle using the static sessile drop method.

AB - In this work, nickel (Ni) thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation of Ni using Glancing Angle Deposition technique onto the glass substrate with the thickness varied from 25 nm to 150 nm. Characterization of obtained Ni films was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by Magneto-Optical Kerr effect measurements (MOKE). The effect of thickness on structural, chemical and magnetic properties of nickel films has been studied. Observed changes in microstructure were correlated with the variation in magnetic parameters obtained by MOKE measurements. It was found that for thinner Ni films, the enhancement of coercivity is due to the surface roughness of Ni films, while for thicker films the observed asymmetry of coercivity is due to the mechanism of column size growth. AB - High density polyethylene (HDPE) has been modified by Ag+ and Au+ ion implantation with the energy of 60 and 200 keV, respectively. The doses of implanted silver and gold ions were as follows: 1 x 10(15), 5 x 10(15) and 1 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). The surface topography was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), while the surface composition changes were detected using phase imaging AFM. Phase analysis of AFM images shows that both physical and chemical changes occur on the surface of HDPE and that these changes depend on the nature of implanted ions and on the implantation dose. Silver ion implantation causes a higher degree of chemical changes, while the implantation of gold ions causes a higher degree of physical changes. Breakpoints were observed for the implantation doses of 0.6 x 10(15) and 4.4 x 10(15) ions/cm(2) for silver and gold ions, respectively. Physical changes are confirmed by the analysis of mean square roughness and power spectral density slopes as functions of the implantation dose. The position and half-width of peaks in histograms of phase AFM images confirmed the changes in surface composition.

The surface topography was observed by atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM), while the surface composition changes were detected using phase imaging AFM. Surface topography changes were studied in detail using 3D surface parameters analyses. The average roughness decreased for the implanted HDPE indicating the flattening of the surface. Phase AFM images indicated the homogenization of the polyethylene during ion implantation, while histogram analyses confirmed the change in surface composition.

AB - Reflection and structural analyses of different copper and zinc coatings were performed. The copper coatings were electrodeposited from a sulfate solution in the presence of thiourea, as well as in the presence of modified polyglycol ether, PEG 6000 and 3-mercaptopropanesulfonate.The zinc coating was electrodeposited from a sulfate solution in the presence of a dextrin/salicylaldehyde mixture. They were examined by STM and X-ray diffraction analysis, and measurements of the reflection of light from their surfaces were taken. The mean sizes of atomically flat parts of these surfaces were estimated by the STM software measurements, using options for the determination of the autocovariance function and the power spectral densityfunction. It was shown that the mean sizes of atomically flat parts of the copper coatings were several times greater than the mean size of atomically flat parts of the zinc coating. This difference probably leads to the difference in the maximum degrees of mirror reflection between copper and zinc coatings.

The estimated value of (2.7±0.3) J cm-2 and the derived equations which relate the specific surface of copper powder to the deposition conditions permit an estimation of the specific surface of copper powderc The agreement between the estimated value and literature data is very good.

AB - Reflection and structural analyses of different copper and zinc coatings were performed. The coatings of copper obtained were from acid sulfate solutions in the absence and presence of thiourea. The coatings of zinc were obtained from acid sulfate solutions in the absence and presence of dextrin and furfural. They were examined by STM, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and measurements of the reflection of light from their surfaces were taken. Reflection of light from zinc and copper coatings obtained from corresponding pure sulfate solutions was mostly diffuse reflection. The copper coating obtained in the presence of thiourea and the zinc coating obtained in the presence of dextrin and furfural showed a high degree of mirror reflection, and based on structural analysis are characterised as mirror bright metal surfaces.

AB - In this work, the structure of a silver mirror surface was examined by the STM technique. It was shown that the structural characteristics which enable a high degree of mirror reflection from this surface, which is very close to the ideal reflectivity of silver, are: flat and mutually parallel parts of the surface which are smooth on the atomic level, and distances between adjacent flat parts which state several atomic diameters.
