Synthesis and characterization of new refractory coatings based on talc, cordierite, zircon and mullite fillers for lost foam casting process

AB  - Refractory coatings based on different refractory fillers (talc, cordierite, zircon and mullite) for application in Lost Foam casting process were investigated. Design and optimization of the coatings composition with controlled, rheological properties included, and consequently synthesis were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and fillers and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Morphologic and microstructural analysis of fillers was carried out by means of scanning electronic microscope. X-ray diffraction analysis by means of X-ray diffractometer was applied in determination and monitoring the phase composition changes of the refractory fillers. An analysis of the particle size and shape was carried out by means of the PC software application package OZARIA 2.5. To assess the effects of application of individual refractory coatings, a detailed investigation of structural and mechanical properties of the moldings obtained was performed. Highlight was placed on revealing and analyzing surface and volume defects present on moldings. Radiographic molding tests were carried out by means of the X-ray device SAIFORT type-S200. Attained results are essential for the synthesis of refractory coatings based on high-temperature fillers and their applications in Lost Foam casting process for manufacturing of moldings with in-advance-set properties.

AB  - In this study, new refractory coatings based on synthesized cordierite for the casting applications were developed. The investigation included starting raw materials characterization, synthesis of the cordierite, design of the refractory coating as final product, and its application testing. The obtained results pointed out that coating suspension sediment stability was crucial quality parameter. Design and optimization of the coatings composition, with controlled rheological properties included, were achieved by application of different coating components, namely different suspension agents and by alteration of the coating production procedure. Cordierite, used as filler, was obtained by means of synthesis in the solid-state reaction on the basis of talc, kaolin, and alumina. The investigation showed that the application of these particular types of water/alcohol-based coatings has positive influence on surface quality and structural and mechanical properties of the castings of aluminum alloys obtained by casting into sand molds by means of evaporable models method, that is, evaporate pattern casting process.

Premazi na bazi cirkona sa primenom u Lost Foam procesu livenja

AB  - U ovom radu je istraživana mogućnost dobijanja novih vatrostalnih premaza na bazi cirkona koji bi imali primenu u livarstvu. Optimizacija sastava premaza kontrolisana reološkim svojstvima postignuta je primenom različitih komponenata premaza, naročito primenom novog veziva na bazi suspenzije i variranjem načina spravljanja premaza. Čestice cirkonskoh praha veličine 25×10-6 m su korišćene kao ispuna. Uzorak cirkona ispitivan je pomoću sledećih metoda: difrakcija X-zraka, diferencijalna termalna analiza i mikroskopija. Oblik i veličina zrna su analizirani pomoću računarskog programa za analizu slike OZARIA 2.5. Pokazano je da primena ovih premaza na bazi vode i alkohola ima pozitivan uticaj na kvalitet površine, tj. na strukturne i mehaničke karakteristike odlivaka livenog gvožđa koji su dobijeni metodom livenja u peščane kalupe i pomoću isparljivih modela (Lost Foam metoda livenja).

Zircon powder with particle size of 25×10-6 m was used as filler. The zircon sample was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, diffraction thermal analysis and polarized microscopy. The shape and grain size were analyzed using OZARIA 2.5 software. It was shown that application of this type of water-alcohol-based coating had a positive influence on surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of cast iron obtained by pouring into sand molds by means of the expandable patterns method (Lost Foam casting process).

Specific characteristics of coating glazes based on basalt

AB  - Investigations in this paper has been carried out in order to define the correlation between specific characteristics of coating glazes based on basalt, fired faience and appearance and the quality of the ceramic product surface. The paper presents the initial results of research on possibilities for utilisation of basalt from the locality " Vrelo" - Kopaonik Mountain (Serbia) for producing the opaque glaze.From frits with different basalt content (25%, 30%, 35%, and 60%) with addition of water and 5% of the kaolin " Zetlizer" the liquid glazes-suspensions were made (G-1/25, G-2/30, G-3/35, and G-4/60). The primary fired biscuit-shaped faience was used for applying the glazes by dipping, pouring and brushing methods. The further firing process of glazes took place in a laboratory tunnel furnace, under the following operating parameters: temperature T= 980 °C and retention time t= 3. h (hours).The initial investigation has shown that the basalt from the locality Vrelo is suitable for obtaining applicable glazes, bringing the attractive and decorative colours to the surfaces of the faience ceramics. The best results were achieved by adding the iron pigments.

Mica based coating for application in lost foam casting process

AB  - This paper presents the results of mechanical activation of filler based on mica and the influence on the quality of foundry coatings. The coating was applied for lining of evaporable model in Lost foam casting process. The talc and mica samples were tested by the following methods.: Xray diffraction analysis, diffraction thermal analysis and qualitative mineralogical analysis on scanning electronic micrpscope. The shape and grain size were analyzed by the program package OZARIA 2.5. For assessing the quality of the coatings and the effects of their application detailed analysis of structural and mechanical properties of the castings were done. Also, the radiographic examination of castings on the type of x-ray device SAIFORT-S200 was done. Application of refractory coatings on the basis of talk and mica showed a positive influence on the structural and mechanical properties of castings of aluminum-silicon alloys.

AB  - In this work, the results of examining the possibilities of use of a number of ceramic powders for manufacturing the coatings for polymeric models and their application in the Loast Foam casting process. According to it, compositions of coatings have been shown, such as - the content of refractory component, bond, suspension maintenance agent and solvent-water. First of all, application of ceramic fillers such as talc, zircon, chromite and corrund was shown. The aim of the research was to establish the correlation between the quality of the castings obtained by a casting method with evaporable models and the properties of the ceramic coatings applied, i.e. the properties of ceramic fillers (talc, corrund, zircon, chromite). Preparation procedures for ceramic fillers were defined, starting from choosing the powder, preparation by milling and fine milling with mechanical activation of powders, powder characterization method, choosing the other coating components, as well as the method of application of a coating on polymeric models. The results obtained for application of the manufactured refractory coatings showed positive effects on surface improvement of the castings obtained, while application of thinner layers enabled elimination of typical faults, such as porosity in the castings manufactured according to Lost Foam process.
AB  - U radu su prezentirani rezultati istraživanja mogućnosti korišćenja više keramičkih prahova za izradu premaza za polimerne modele i primenu u Lost foam procesu livenja. U skladu sa tim prikazni su sastavi premaza - sadržaj vatrostalne komponente, veziva, sredstva za održavanje suspenzije i rastvarač-voda. Pre svega prikazana je primena keramičkih punioca kao što su: talk, cirkon, hromit i korund. Cilj istraživanja bio je utvrđivanje korelacije kvaliteta odlivaka dobijenih metodom livenja sa isparljivim modelima i svojstava primenjenih keramičkih premaza, odnosno svojstava keramičkih punilaca (talka, korunda, cirkona, hromita). Definisani su postupci pripreme vatrostalnih punilaca, počev od izbora praha, pripreme mlevenjem i finim mlevenjem uz mehaničku aktivaciju prahova, metode karakterizacije prahova, izbor ostalih komponenti premaza, kao i metode nanošenja premaza na polimerne modele. Dobijeni rezultati primene izrađenih vatrostalnih premaza pokazali su pozitivne efekte na poboljšanje površine dobijenih odlivaka, a primenjeni tanji slojevi premaza omogućili su eliminaciju karakterističnih grešaka tipa poroznost u odlivcima izrađenim po Lost foam procesu.

abstract = "In this work, the results of examining the possibilities of use of a number of ceramic powders for manufacturing the coatings for polymeric models and their application in the Loast Foam casting process. According to it, compositions of coatings have been shown, such as - the content of refractory component, bond, suspension maintenance agent and solvent-water. First of all, application of ceramic fillers such as talc, zircon, chromite and corrund was shown. The aim of the research was to establish the correlation between the quality of the castings obtained by a casting method with evaporable models and the properties of the ceramic coatings applied, i.e. the properties of ceramic fillers (talc, corrund, zircon, chromite). Preparation procedures for ceramic fillers were defined, starting from choosing the powder, preparation by milling and fine milling with mechanical activation of powders, powder characterization method, choosing the other coating components, as well as the method of application of a coating on polymeric models. AB  - In order to increase the efficiency of coatings, the influence of mechanical activation has been studied by monitoring the changes of surface and energy state, the change of structure and properties of ceramic powders under the influence of mechanical forces at dispersion. Thus prepared ceramic powders were utilized as a filler in synthesis of ceramic coatings for sand molds and for application in the EPC casting process. The aim was to monitor the changes in quality of ceramic powders after mechanical activation and their influence on the properties of coatings and, respectively, on the properties of the castings obtained. A dried layer of ceramic coating, which may vary in thickness, applied on either a sand mold or an evaporable polymeric pattern (EPC casting process) is used as an efficient barrier for liquid metal during the inflow stage. The tests showed a positive influence of the process of mechanical activation of ceramic fillers on the coating properties, as well as on improvement of surface quality of the castings obtained. .
AB  - U cilju povećanja efikasnosti premaza izučavan je i uticaj mehaničke aktivacije keramičkih prahova kroz praćenje promene površine i energetskog stanja, promene strukture i svojstava keramičkih prahova pod dejstvom mehaničkih sila pri dispergovanju. Ovako pripremljeni keramički prahovi korišćeni su kao punilac u sintezi keramičkih premaza za peščane kalupe i za primenu u EPC procesu livenja. Cilj je bio praćenje promena kvaliteta keramičkih prahova nakon mehaničke aktivacije i njihov uticaj na svojstva premaza, odnosno svojstva dobijenih odlivaka. Osušeni sloj keramičkog premaza, koji može da bude različite debljine, nanesen na peščani kalup ili isparljiv polimerni model (EPC proces livenja) služi kao efikasna barijera tečnom metalu u fazi ulivanja. Istraživanja su pokazala pozitivan uticaj procesa mehaničke aktivacije keramičkih punila na svojstva premaza i na poboljšanje kvaliteta površine dobijenih odlivaka. prahova, EPC proces livenja, kvalitet odlivaka. .
