Abstract
In this paper, properties related to the apsorption behaviour (wetting) of hemp based knitted fabrics as well as the transport behaviour (wicking) of absorbed water in the fabrics are investigated. In order to obtain the different fibre content knits, non-homogeneous yarns produced by ply-twisting two or more homogeneous component are used for the production of hemp based knitted fabrics. It made possible to evaluate the effect of different parameters, such as fibre type and yarn geometry on absorption properties of hemp based knitted fabrics. The results obtained indicate that ply-twisting of yarn could be the way to improve absorption proper ties by combining good fibre properties and intrinsic characteristics of filament or textured components. Excellent hygienic properties of hemp based knits confirmed in this study, determine these knitted fabrics for the hospital uses.
