Polymer optical fibers today
Polimerna optička vlakna danas
Abstract
Polymer optical fibers (so called POF) are already in wide use in a large number of fields. This paper gives an overview including a background of the development of polymer optical fibers, their advantages, various types of fibers and applied materials. The physical principles of optical waveguides are also discussed. Manufacturing techniques and the properties of polymer optical fibers are described in detail. The poor market penetration of polymer optical fibers, due to inadequate performance in terms of attenuation, bandwidth and temperature resistance, is explained. The article concludes with a discussion of further development, especially in regard to the extension of the bandwidth, the reduction of losses and the improvement of heat resistance, indicating great promise for the development of a new generation of high-performance polymer optical fibers which will satisfy market demands. Based on such prospects, a future high-speed network is proposed.
