This study discusses the antimicrobial activity of cotton (CO) fabric oxidized with NaIO4/NaClO2
prior to in situ synthesis of Cu-based nanoparticles (NPs). Carboxyl groups generated by oxidation
of cellulose were utilized for efficient binding of Cu2+-ions from the solution of CuSO4 which
were further reduced by extract of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Spreng., Ericaceae (bearberry
leaves) as a green reducing agent. A number of free carboxyl groups was highly affected by the
initial concentration of NaIO4 solution. Color yield of impregnated fabrics varied with amounts of
synthesized Cu-based NPs. Fabricated samples provided excellent antibacterial activity and controlled
release of Cu2+-ions.
