Abstract
The sensory perception of textile materials is related to mechanical stimuli due to pressure and friction forces, so the softness and surface properties are considered to be the key parameters of fabric hand. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the fibre type, yarn structure and spinning technique on softness and surface properties of plain knitted fabrics. Plain knitted fabrics (jersey) were produced from the two- assembled hemp, viscose and cotton yarns so as to obtain five different fibre content knits: 100% hemp, 100% cotton, 100% viscose, 50%/50% hemp/cotton and 50%/50% hemp/viscose knit. The Kawabata Evaluation System (KES-F) compression and surface testing instruments were used to characterize these properties of the knitted fabrics used. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to determine the influence of the fibre type, yarn structure and spinning technique on the compression behavior, surface friction and geometrical roughness of the plain knitte...d fabrics. The analysis of KES data and a statistical method of ANOVA pointed out the influence of the fibre type, as well as yarn core and surface geometry, on compression properties and geometrical roughness of the knitted fabrics.
