Tissue engineering (TE) is one of the new strategies aiming to address the problem of tissue failure by in vitro cultivation of functional tissue equivalents (please see the Chapter 1). Ideally, engineered tissues can serve to replace damaged or diseased tissues providing appropriate tissue composition, biosynthetic activity, full integration with the host tissue, and normal tissue function.
