Abstract
Materials were five alumina based commercial refractories with different content of (Al2O3 + TiO2) from 28% to 78%.The thermal and mechanical properties of these materials were measured using standard laboratory procedure. Thermal shock stability of the samples was measured using the water quench test (JUS. B. D.8. 319) the heat transfer coefficient and the Biot number were calculated under conditions of free convection from equations given by Holman. The damage resistance parameters were calculated using average values of the measured thermal and mechanical properties. Two groups of damage resistance parameters were calculated. For the first group usual expression were used. For the second group damage resistance parameters were modified using Biot number (propose damage resistance parameters: (Rp)(3)=Bi R"' and (Rp)(4) = Bi R''"). culated values of resistance parameters were compared to the results of water quench test, with high values of linear correlation coefficient. The second dam...age resistance parameter and the proposed damage resistance parameters do not exhibit high enough values of correlation coefficient with water quench test results. Results demonstrate that prediction of thermal shock behavior using materials properties of alumina based refractories may be possible and that it correlates with the experimental test (water quench test).
