Abstract
The different techniques that enable drug delivery in the desired manner are constantly investigated and developed to enhance patient compliance and drug efficiency and to reduce the side effects of drugs. One of the key problems in designing appropriate formulation for drug delivery is the right selection of excipient. Among many different materials, gellan gum as a microbially derived polysaccharide is nowadays drawing increased attention because of its favorable physicochemical, mechanical, and functional properties. Its abundance, nontoxicity, easy gelation, mucoadhesiveness, thermal and acid stability, high transparency, etc. have made gellan gum to be applied in many different dosage forms (gels, as mucoadhesive or granulating agent, tablet binder, in controlled release dosage forms, for production of beads, films, microspheres and microcapsules, nanohydrogels, nanoparticles, etc.) and for different routes of administration (oral, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, etc.). This chapter i...s focused on recent advances related to the applications, research, and development of different uses of gellan gum in drug delivery.
