AB  - This Ph.D. thesis studies and experimentally examines applicability of thin polymer films as structural substitutes for crystaline Si in bimorph MEMS structures. The two shapes (bi - morph) and transient state between the ON - OFF resting positions, that such deformable MEMS structures assume, largely depend on thermo-mechanical characteristics of the structural materials, influencing response time, efficiency and delivered force and/or sensitivity. For the first time, thermal characteristics (e.g. Coefficent of Thermal Expansion (CTE)  and the Glass Transient Temperature Tg) of trully thin (2m – 10m) polyimide (PI) films have been examined and the relationship with respect to film thickness and film coating processing parameters (e.g. soft - baking and hard-baking temperature profiles) has been established. The correlations between the film thickness and respective CTEs - , as well as respective glass transition temperatures, Tgs have been experimentally established. Experimentally established thermo - mechanical characteristics of PI films were then used for software simulation, functionalisation and modelling of the next generation of bimorph microsensors and microactuators based on PI - metal and PI - PI architecture...
AB  - U okviru ove doktorske disertacije proučena je i eksperimentalno ispitana mogućnost primene tankih polimernih filmova kao zamene za silicijum kod bimorfnih MEMS struktura. Ponašanje deformabilnih bimorfnih MEMS struktura (oblik, položaj u mirovanju i u stanju pobude) veoma zavisi od termomehaničkih karakteristika samih strukturnih materijala, a koje samim tim imaju uticaja i na vreme odziva, efikasnost i primenjenu snagu i/ili osetljivost. Prvi put su u radu ispitivane toplotne karakteristike (koeficijent toplotnog širenja, , i temperatura prelaza u staklasto stanje, Tg) tankih poliimidnih filmova (2 m - 10 m) u zavisnosti od debljine filma i procesnih parametara (temperature umrežavanja, kao i temperaturnog profila koji je korišćen pri umrežavanju polimera). Na osnovu eksperimentalnih podataka izvedene su korelacije izmeĎu debljine filma i koeficijenta toplotnog širenja, , kao i temperature prelaza u staklasto stanje, Tg. Pomoću toplotnih karakteristika PI filmova izvršena je simulacija, funkcionalizacija i modelovanje nove generacije bimorfnih mikrosenzora i mikropokretača tipa metal - poliimid i poliimid - poliimid...

Metal-polymer and polymer-polymer microcantilevers: promising alternative to Si-based MEMS

AB  - Polymers are very attractive as thin films in emerging reel-to-reel manufacturing or as spin coated from liquid form in a quick and low cost process in standard microfabrication processes. There is a wide selection of materials available with many different thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. With continuous growth in consumer electronics and sensors sectors, the range of potential application fields is further diversifying and integration of MEMS modules, as well as delivering IC functionality in thin foil-like packaging with proven reliability and reduction in cost is increasingly required. Furthermore, increased volume and decentralisation of testing within medical diagnostics field worldwide (IVD Point of Care and Patient Self Testing trends) require low cost solutions for disposable test cartridges and other supporting consumables. In majority of the emerging medical applications, integrated, low cost sensors need to operate in liquid environment, often rendering the use of standard Si-based solutions inadequate and costly. Polymer-based microcantilevers, realised by standard surface microfabrication techniques, were chosen for this study as the alternative approach to Si-based MEMS. Cantilevers are well understood microstructures and so provide an excellent vehicle for assessing both thermo-mechanical properties of polymers as MEMS materials and their potential for die-level packaging and integration into miniaturized systems. Due to the nature of processes involved and their thermal budget, substitution of Si substrate with e.g. flexible substrates or polymer films is foreseen in the near future. Fabricated cantilever beams consist of various combinations of thin metal/polymer and polymer/polymer films. Polyimides, as structural material, have been selected for this study due to inherently good mechanical properties, good chemical resistance, low dielectric constant and high thermal stability.

AB  - Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are miniaturized devices that can sense the environment, process and analyze information, and respond with a variety of mechanical and electrical actuators. MEMS consist of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, electrical and electronics devices on a common silicon substrate. Micro-electro-mechanical systems are becoming a vital technology for modern society. Some of the advantages of MEMS devices are: very small size, very low power consumption, low cost, easy to integrate into systems or modify, small thermal constant, high resistance to vibration, shock and radiation, batch fabricated in large arrays, improved thermal expansion tolerance. MEMS technology is increasingly penetrating into our lives and improving quality of life, similar to what we experienced in the microelectronics revolution. Commercial opportunities for MEMS are rapidly growing in broad application areas, including biomedical, telecommunication, security, entertainment, aerospace, and more in both the consumer and industrial sectors on a global scale. As a breakthrough technology, MEMS is building synergy between previously unrelated fields such as biology and microelectronics. Many new MEMS and nanotechnology applications will emerge, expanding beyond that which is currently identified or known. MEMS are definitely technology for 21st century.
AB  - Mikro-elektro-mehanički sistemi (MEMS) pripadaju minijaturnim elektromehaničkim sistemima (uređaji i strukture) koji mogu da registruju promene u okolini, da ih analiziraju i procesiraju pomoću mikroelektronike. MEMS čine mehanički elementi, senzori, pojačivači, električni i elektronski uređaji koji su smešteni na silicijumov supstrat (čip). MEMS uređaji su minijaturni (dimenzije), optimalni (energetski i ekonomski), adaptabilni (lako se integrišu u druge sisteme i lako se modifikuju), niskog koeficijenata toplotnog širenja, velike otpornosti na vibracije, udar i zračenje. Tehnologije koje se primenjuju za proizvodnju MEMS i MEMS prodiru u svakodnevni život, na sličan način kao mikroelektronika. Mogućnost šaržne proizvodnje u velikim serijama otvorila je široku, komercijalnu primenu MEMS uređaja u biomedicini, telekomunikacijama, bezbednosti i zabavi. MEMS povezuje oblasti koje nisu imale dodirne tačke kao što su biologija, mikroelektronika i nanotehnologija. MEMS se razvija u pravcima koji nadrastaju trenutna saznanja i otkrića tako da se smatra da je MEMS osnova za uređaje i tehnologije 21. veka.

Antimicrobial Effect of Essential Oil Isolated from Eucalyptus globulus Labill. from Montenegro

AB  - Chemical composition of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus Labill., grown in Montenegro, was analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and its antimicrobial activity was evaluated against 17 microorganisms, including food poisoning and spoilage bacteria and human pathogens. The Eucalyptus essential oil yield was 1.8% (w/w) on the fresh weight basis, whereas the analysis resulted in the identification of a total of 11 constituents, 1.8 cineole (85.8%), alpha-pinene (7.2%), and beta-myrcene (1.5%) being the main components. Other compounds identified in the oil were beta-pinene, limonene, alpha-phellandrene, gamma-terpinene, linalool, pinocarveol, terpinen-4-ol, and alpha-terpineol. The results of the antimicrobial activity tests revealed that the essential oil of E. globulus has rather a strong antimicrobial activity, especially against Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Minimum inhibitory concentration revealed the lowest activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonela infantis (3.13 mg/ml) while the highest activity was against S. aureus, E. coli, and S. pyogenes (0.09 mg/ml).

Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oil of wild-growing Salvia officinalis L. from Montenegro

AB  - The essential oil composition of wild-growing Salvia officinalis L. (Lamiaceae) from Montenegro was analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS and its antimicrobial activity tested at different oil concentrations, Twenty-five compounds were identified in the essential oil, with major components: alpha-thujone (29.50%), camphor (22.52%) and 1,8-cineole (12.19%). The amount of several minor compounds in the essential oil was also significant: camphene (5.35%), borneol (4.43%) and limonene (4.21 %). Sixteen different microorganisms were used in this study as test organisms, including four reference ATCC strains and twelve clinically isolated strains. These included human pathogens, food poisoning and spoilage bacteria and the blastomycete opportunistic yeast Candida albicans. Results showed that the sage essential oil exhibited a significant antibacterial and antifungal activity. The most sensitive strain was Staphyloccocus aureus, and of Gram-negative species even at the lowest concentration of oil, Providencia stuartii was the most sensitive. The origin of the bacterial strain and the fact of being Gram-positive or Gram-negative appeared to have little influence on the sensitivity of the oil; in general all the bacteria, except Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enteridis, were susceptible in various degrees,to the different concentration of sage essential oil. Noteworthy is significant activity of sage essential oil against clinically isolated bacterial strains and yeast C albicans.

(Lamiaceae) from Montenegro was analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS and its antimicrobial activity tested at different oil concentrations, Twenty-five compounds were identified in the essential oil, with major components: alpha-thujone (29.50%), camphor (22.52%) and 1,8-cineole (12.19%). The amount of several minor compounds in the essential oil was also significant: camphene (5.35%), borneol (4.43%) and limonene (4.21 %). Sixteen different microorganisms were used in this study as test organisms, including four reference ATCC strains and twelve clinically isolated strains. These included human pathogens, food poisoning and spoilage bacteria and the blastomycete opportunistic yeast Candida albicans. Results showed that the sage essential oil exhibited a significant antibacterial and antifungal activity. The most sensitive strain was Staphyloccocus aureus, and of Gram-negative species even at the lowest concentration of oil, Providencia stuartii was the most sensitive. AB  - The radical polymerization of monoethyl itaconate (MEI) was investigated in bulk and in solution at 60°C using a,a'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. It was established that the obtained polymer poly(monoethyl itaconate) was insoluble in its monomer, implying that the bulk polymerization of MEI was a precipitation polymerization. The polymerization kinetics of MEI were discussed and compared to the polymerization kinetics of structurally similar alkyl itaconates. The homogeneous radical polymerization of MEI in tetrahydrofuran was not possible in the whole range of monomer/solvent concentration ratios, while the polymerization of MEI in methanol was homogeneous. The chain transfer constants to THF and methanol at 60°C were determined.

AB  - Synthetic fluids obtained by the copolymerization of α -olefins with alkyl esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids have a unique combination of properties of non-polar poly-a-olefins (PAOs) and polar esters in a single molecule. These compounds are characterized by superior thermal, oxidative and hydrolytic stability, miscibility with mineral and synthetic base oils solubility of additives and neutral elastomer behavior. Depending on the molar masses and comonomer ratios in the copolymer molecule, synthetic fluids with a wide range of properties are obtained. These compounds are valuable components in lubricating oil formulations for different applications.
AB  - Sintetička ulja na bazi poli(α-olefina) (PAO) ili estara karbonskih kiselina (di-estri-DE i neopoliolestri-NPE) primenjuju se najčešće kada konvencionalna mineralna ulja ne mogu da zadovolje zahteve kvaliteta. Obe navedene grupe sintetičkih fluida imaju niz prednosti u poređenju sa mineralnim uljima (visoka vrednost indeksa viskoznosti, izražena termička i oksidaciona stabilnost, mala isparljivost), ali imaju i izvesne nedostatke kao što je mala rastvorljivost aditiva (PAO) i nedovoljna hidrolitička stabilnost i interakcija sa zaptivnim materija-lima (DE I NPE). Ove mane se u značajnoj meri ublažavaju korišćenjem smeša PAO i estara. Tako se javila ideja da se sintetizuju fluidi u čijim bi se molekulima kombinovala svojstva nepolarnih PAO i polarnih estara. To su kopolimeri α-olefina i alkilestara karbonskih kiselina sa kontrolisanim sadriajem polarnih grupa, dobijeni radikalnom polimerizacijom uz peroksidne inicijatore. U zavisnosti od molske mase i odnosa komonomera, temperature, sadržaja inicijatora i načina njegovog unošenja u sistem i trajanja kopolimerizacije dobijaju se kopolimeri različitih svojstava. To su bezbojne, uljaste tečnosti širokog opsega viskoznosti i visoke vrednosti indeksa viskoznosti. Sintetizovani su kopolimeri n-butilmetakrilata i tri α-olefina (α-dodecena, α-tetradecena i α-heksadecena) uz inicijator tercijarni butilperbenzoat. Proizvodima su određene temperature stinjavanja, viskoznost na 40°C i 100°C i izračunati indeksi viskoznosti. Vrednosti navedenih parametara ukazuju na mogućnost korišćenja ovih kopolimera kao kvalitetnih komponenata mazivih ulja.

AB  - The Li-, Na- and K salts of poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) were prepared by treating the polyacid with the corresponding aqueous hydroxide. The resulting polysalts were analysed by elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The results indicate that the polysalts are thermally more stable than the parent PIA, they all degrade in a similar manner and somewhat more complexly than the poly(methacrylic acid) salts.

AB  - The oxidative and non-oxidative degradation of poly(di-methoxy-), poly(di-ethoxy-), poly(di-iso-propoxy-) and poly(di-n-butoxyethyl itaconate) were investigated by thermogravimetry. Characteristic degradation temperatures and apparent activation energies of degradation were determined for the non-oxidative degradation of all the investigated polymers. It was not possible to determine these characteristics in the presence of oxygen as the degradation was accompanied by a secondary exothermic reaction. Based on examination of the monomers, it is supposed that the exothermic reaction is a repolymerisation of the monomers released during the earlier stages of polymer degradation.
