AB - Liposome-encapsulated folic acid is incorporated into the films made from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) (2 mas%) and a mixture of CMC and solagum (9:1 w/w) using the film-forming cast solution method. Histidine is used to increase solubility for folic acid in liposomes (1–5 mg mL−1), and propylene glycol is used as a film plasticizer (2.6 mas%). The obtained films (50–60 µm tick) containing 3.12–20.19 mg of folic acid per gram of film are envisaged to be used as patches for transdermal delivery of folic acid. Therefore, some physical, mechanical, release and structural attributes of the films are scrutinized. Folic acid gives yellow color to the films and contributes to stronger chemical bonds which result in improved strength of the film. Liposomes prolong the release of folic acid from films to 24 h without adverse effects on mechanical properties of the films, but degrade homogeneity of the films, which can be ascribed to its agglomeration within the film matrix as revealed by atomic force microscopy. According to the release at pH 5.5, the film formulation based on a blend of CMC and solagum containing 3 mg mL−1 liposome-encapsulated folic acid is recommended. Practical Application: Folic acid is effective in reducing oxidative stress levels in the skin and neutralizing the harmful free radicals and is also essential for various metabolic reactions in the body. However, the limited solubility of folic acid linked with its poor absorption in an organism, low storage stability, short half-life upon oral consumption, specific food preferences of some people, extensive liver metabolism, and pregnancy-induced vomiting point to a large potential in transdermal usage of folic acid. This has motivated us to design new multicomponent polymer-lipid systems as an alternative solution to overcome some of these drawbacks. The results obtained for these multicomponent films pointed to their potential for prolonged release of folic acid to 24 h, which can also be useful for scientists interested in encapsulating similar poorly soluble compounds in CMC patches. The finding can be also valuable information for pharmaceutical manufacturers and scientists worldwide.

AB - A biphasic [Mn(dipya)(H2O)4](tpht)/{[Zn(dipya)(tpht)]·H2O}n complex material, I (dipya = 2,2’-dipyridylamine, tpht2– = dianion of terephthalatic acid) was synthesized by ligand exchange reaction and characterized by XRPD and FTIR spectroscopy. A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

flavonoid contents (TFC), antioxidant capacity, extraction yield, zeta potential, density, and surface
tension. In maceration and HAE, TPC were 1.18±0.06 and 1.43±0.05 mg GAE/mL (pH 6), and
0.69±0.05 and 0.86±0.02 mg GAE/mL (pH 1.2). The same trend is noticed in the case of TFC:
0.33±0.01 and 0.42±0.02 mg CE/mL (pH 6) and 0.24±0.01 and 0.27±0.01 mg CE/mL (pH 1.2). ABTS
radical scavenging activity was 775.0±3.5 and 623.8±5.1 mmol Trolox/mL (pH 6), and 269.2±3.1
and 327.9±7.7 mmol Trolox/mL (pH 1.2). In DPPH assay, IC50 was 1.64±0.04 and 1.48±0.03 mg/mL
(pH 6), and 7.59±0.07 and 5.11±0.09 mg/mL (pH 1.2). Extraction yield was 0.541±0.049 and
0.583±0.019% (pH 6), and 0.938±0.057 and 0.889±0.060% (pH 1.2). Zeta potential was -2.58±0.02
and -2.08±0.10 mV (pH 6), and 1.49±0.37 and 1.08±0.09 mV (pH 1.2). Density was 0.945±0.001
and 0.949±0.001 g/mL (pH 6), and 1.008±0.001 and 1.010±0.001 g/mL (pH 1.2). Surface tension
was 29.2±0.3 and 30.5±1.0 mN/m (pH 6), and 32.6±2.3 and 36.5±2.3 mN/m (pH 1.2). The best
properties were determined in the extract obtained in HAE at pH 6. The aim of this study is to provide
evidence of the physico-chemical properties of Serpylli herba's waste extracts that can add value and
improve the quality of existing food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products.

AB - The potential of food biodiversity and its production streams to generate additional features for isolating high-value products has been underutilized. Even so, the recovery of valuable nutritional compounds like proteins from waste streams and by-products has been identified as a key strategy for enhancing production sustainability in order to open up new market potential. In accordance with those facts, the primary aim of this research was to utilize a relatively novel extraction technique, high-intensity ultrasound, in order to achieve a reduction in time, energy, and extraction solvent consumption while at the same time improving the extraction yield and nutritional value of extracted leaf proteins. For this purpose, an ultrasound probe system with a low frequency (20±0.2 kHz) was utilized to extract the white proteins from the pumpkin leaf biomass, and the effects of different sonication amplitudes (20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70%) and duration periods (0, 1, 3, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, and 20 min) on the yield, solubility and emulsifying qualities, antioxidant properties, and structural characteristics of proteins were studied. In the functional properties evaluated, leaf proteins isolated using ultrasound outperformed those extracted using the conventional extraction method, maceration. High-intensity ultrasound resulted in a slight but gradual decline in solubility with an increase in amplitude, but a significant increase in solubility in an acidic environment was observed with the decrease of cavitation periods. Ultrasound-extracted proteins exhibit nearly 12, 1.5, and 3-fold greater solubility compared to the maceration-extracted sample at pH 3, 4, and 5, respectively. The emulsifying activity diminishes with increasing sonication amplitude and duration but increases in emulsifying stability as sonication periods are extended. The ultrasound extraction provided pumpkin proteins with high radical scavenging activities (i.e., good electron donors) and chelating activity, with half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) in the range of 0.9 to 1.5 mg/ml, and 0.3 to 0.6, respectively, especially at 20 and 40% amplitude. Raman spectroscopy, surface charge, surface hydrophobicity, and sulfhydryl group contents were employed to characterize the structural changes brought on by ultrasound cavitation, and the achieved changes were more influenced by the treatment periods and amplitudes applied. The experimental findings show that the use of ultrasound-emerging technology for protein extraction can significantly increase the yield of pumpkin leaf protein by up to 70%. The utilization of leaf proteins in food products and dietary supplements can be augmented by combining the ultrasound periods and amplitudes to create high-value samples with better capabilities.

AB - In the present study, rosehip (Rosa canina L.) extract was successfully encapsulated in phospholipid liposomes using a single-step procedure named the proliposome method. Part of the obtained liposomes was subjected to UV irradiation and non-treated (native) and UV-irradiated liposomes were further characterized in terms of encapsulation efficiency, chemical composition (HPLC analysis), antioxidant capacity, particle size, PDI, zeta potential, conductivity, mobility, and antioxidant capacity. Raman spectroscopy as well as DSC analysis were applied to evaluate the influence of UV irradiation on the physicochemical properties of liposomes. The encapsulation efficiency of extract-loaded liposomes was higher than 90%; the average size was 251.5 nm; the zeta potential was −22.4 mV; and the conductivity was found to be 0.007 mS/cm. UV irradiation did not cause a change in the mentioned parameters. In addition, irradiation did not affect the antioxidant potential of the liposome–extract system. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the extract was completely covered by the lipid membrane during liposome entrapment, and the peroxidation process was minimized by the presence of rosehip extract in liposomes. These results may guide the potential application of rosehip extract-loaded liposomes in the food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic industries, particularly when liposomal sterilization is needed.

AB - Demand for functional food that offers health benefits beyond basic nutrition is increasing. However, challenges in development of nutritionally-enriched food are often limiting its wider production. Generally, the bioactivity losses during food processing, the immiscibility of active ingredients with the food matrix, the change in sensorial properties of the food products and the low bioavailability of some of the active ingredients are challenges faced when developing functional foods. This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art in microencapsulation techniques that can help to overcome aforementioned difficulties. Microencapsulation of sensitive food ingredients provides not only protection against detrimental effects of temperature, light, pH or oxygen, but also delayed/controlled release of actives, masking of unpleasant flavors and it can impact food structure. The most applicable microencapsulation techniques for food purposes are described, and the main advantages and current challenges, as well as the latest advances in application of these technologies are discussed. The microencapsulation techniques included in this chapter are spray and freeze drying, electrospraying, spray-chilling and spray-cooling, emulsification techniques, fluidized-bed coating, supercritical fluid techniques, production of microgels, coacervation, liposomal techniques and inclusion complexation.

AB - The controlled active molecule-delivery technology has progressed over the last decades, with the development of sustained release systems for application in food sector. It is useful to control the rate and extent of food digestion in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and release of an active compound with the ultimate goal of controlling bioavailability and satiety of blood levels. The nature, molecular weight and concentration of a carrier material, as well as the lipophilic/hydrophilic character of the loaded active component, its concentration, interfacial properties and the particle size distribution are some of the key factors that determine the delivery performance of these systems. pH variation, temperature change, variation of the redox potential and enzyme activity are stimuli which most often induce the release of an active molecule in a medium. In order to develop food additives with controlled release, their processing in the gastrointestinal tract has to be understood; therefore, a general description of the digestive system is given and associated to the currently used in vitro experimental models.

This chapter aims to give a useful overview on the gastrointestinal fate of the most frequently used carrier materials and structures of food-grade delivery systems. At the end, mathematical models most useful in fitting to the experimental data of release profiles and resolving the mechanisms implied in controlled release are summarized.

AB - In this work, nanocomposite fibres and microfibres based on alginate and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were produced and characterized for potential application as antibacterial wound dressings. PVA/Ag/Na-alginate colloid solution was used for the preparation of the fibres by a simple extrusion technique followed by freezing-thawing cycles. UV-Visible spectroscopy confirmed successful preservation of AgNPs in fibres while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has shown a balanced combined effect on the Ca-alginate spatial arrangement with the addition of both AgNPs and PVA. The presence of PVA in fibres induced an increase in the swelling degree as compared with that of Ag/Ca-alginate fibres (approx. 28 versus approx. 14). Still, the initially produced PVA/Ca-alginate fibres were mechanically weaker than Ca-alginate fibres, but after drying and rehydration exhibited better mechanical properties. Also, the obtained fibres released AgNPs and/or silver ions at the concentration of approximately 2.6 μg cm -3 leading to bacteriostatic effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. These results are relevant for practical utilization of the fibres, which could be stored and applied in the dry form with preserved mechanical stability, sorption capacity and antibacterial activity.

AB - In this study liposomes were investigated regarding the ability to encapsulate vitamins, vitamin E and folic acid. Liposomes were prepared using commercial mixture based on the soybean lecithin (Phospholipon 90 G) by the proliposome technique. High entrapment efficiency (85-90%) was achieved for both types of vitamins, while the size was dependent on the vitamin type (350 and 630 nm for vitamin E- and folic acid-containing liposomes). Physical stability expressed via changes of the size, polydispersity and zeta potential during storage was confirmed for the period of one month in case liposomes with folic acid and two months for the liposomes with vitamin E. The release study, done using Franc diffusion cell, under skin conditions (pH=5.5), showed that the release rate was determined by solubility of the vitamins.

AB - In traditional medicine Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme) herb represents a part of a large number of herbal medicinal formulations such as syrups, tinctures, infusions, teas, and decoctions. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in testing the biological properties of wild thyme, because the plant is a high-quality raw material, rich in essential oil and pharmacologically active polyphenolic compounds, which can be included in various formulations in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and chemical industries. Wild thyme extracts and essential oil have shown significant nitric oxide, ABTS and DPPH radicals scavenging potential, ferrous ion chelating property, reducing activity and ability to inhibit peroxidation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), proteins and lipids. Wild thyme extracts exerted antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Yersinia enterocolitica, as well as Lactic acid bacteria. Wild thyme essential oil has shown antibacterial potential against E. coli, L. monocytogenes, P. aeruginosa, S. enteritidis, S. aureus, Streptococcus salivariu, S. mutans, S. sanguinis, S. pyogenes, E. feacalis, B. cereus, B. subtilis, B. pumilis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella choleraesuis, and Salmonella poona. T. serpyllum extract possesses antifungal activity against Fusarium solani, F. moniliforme, Aspergillus flavus, Microsporum canis, Alternaria species, Candida albicans, and C. glabarata. The essential oil efficiently inhibited the growth of C. albicans, C. glabrata and Aspergillus fungi. Depending on the concentration, wild thyme extract significantly relaxed spontaneous contractions, as well as acetylcholine-, potassium chloride-, barium chlorideand calcium chloride-induced contractions of the isolated rat ileum. The extract significantly reduced the expression of the inducible enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 and inhibited acetylcholinesterase, myeloperoxidase and α-glucosidase activity. T. serpyllum extract has shown cytotoxic activity on human breast cancer cell lines, while essential oil has shown the antitumor potential in human cell lung cancer, colon, cervical, hepatocellular, prostate, and breast adeno-carcinoma.

AB - Polyphenols, as secondary metabolites from plants, are used as food complements or ingredients
within the pharmaceutical or cosmetic formulations. However, their use is rather limited, due to
their low bioavailability, integrity, permeability, and solubility. Namely, polyphenols’ sensitivity to
environmental factors during food processing, distribution, or storage, or in the gastrointestinal
tract, also limit their activity and the potential health benefits. Thus, the encapsulation of
polyphenol extracts represents an appropriate way to overcome the mentioned disadvantages.
Thymus serpyllum L. ethanol extract obtained in heat-assisted extraction (80°C), rich in polyphenol
compounds, was encapsulated into liposomes produced using phospholipids and proliposome
method. Total polyphenol content in extract and encapsulation efficiency were determined using the
Folin-Ciocalteu procedure. Particle size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential of empty and
extract loaded liposomes were measured during 28 days using photon correlation spectroscopy.
Total polyphenol content of the extract was amounted to 2.08±0.14 mg of gallic acid
equivalents/mL, whereas encapsulation efficiency was 89.4±0.8%. During the 28-days stability
study, the particle size of empty liposomes varied between 420.6±4.3 and 581.6±3.4 nm with
polydispersity index from 0.109±0.067 to 0.295±0.009, while the size of extract loaded liposomes
was between 278.7±1.5 and 456.4±9.3 nm with polydispersity index 0.179±0.094 to 0.284±0.005.
Zeta potential of empty liposomes varied from -17.1±0.2 to -27.3±0.5 mV, whereas the zeta
potential of extract loaded liposomes was between -13.6±0.3 and -25.4±1.4 mV. The aim of this
study is to provide evidence for food manufacturers and food scientists to make broader use of T.

AB - The aim of the present study was the characterization of lyophilized alginate beads with
Rosa canina extract via determination of encapsulation efficiency, total polyphenol and
flavonoid contents, antioxidant capacity, particle size, sphericity factor and polyphenol release in distilled water medium. Electrostatic extrusion process was carried out to obtain calcium-alginate beads with encapsulated R. canina extract, which further lyophilized in freeze
dryer at -75°C and pressure of 0.011 mbar for 24 h and at -65°C and pressure of 0.054 mbar
for 1 h. The total polyphenol content was evaluated spectrophotometrically using modified
Folin-Ciocalteu method, whereas total flavonoid content was determined using colorimetric assay; antioxidant capacity was analyzed in ABTS and DPPH assays. Total polyphenol
and flavonoid contents in lyophilized R. canina extract loaded beads were 68.9±0.4 mg gallic
acid equivalents/g of lyophilized beads and 37.1±3.8 mg catechin equivalents/g, respectively. Thus, determined encapsulation efficiency of polyphenols was 55.1±0.3 %. In ABTS assay,
antioxidant activity of lyophilized extract loaded beads was 10.7±0.1 mg Trolox/g, whereas
in DPPH assay, IC50 of lyophilized beads was 4.11±0.02 mg/mL. The size of the lyophilized
R. canina extract encapsulated particles with extract was 460.7±47.7 µm and sphericity factor was 0.12±0.08. In distilled water as a medium, most of polyphenols of lyophilized R.
canina extract loaded beads were released in the first 30 min, and the maximum release plateau was reached at 90 min. Lyophilized R. canina extract loaded alginate beads developed
in this study have potential to be used in food, pharmacological and cosmetic industries,

AB - Rosa canina pseudo-fruit is rich in bioactive substances, such are carotenoids, ascorbic acid,
polyphenols, fatty acids and minerals. Because of its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and
antioxidant properties it is frequently employed in traditional medicine. However, in order to
protect mentioned bioactive compounds and to improve its bioavailability and controlled release,
numerous encapsulation methods have been developed. Thus, R. canina ethanol extract obtained
using percolation at ambient temperature (25°C), was encapsulated into Lipoid G liposomes
produced in thin film procedure. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, as well as antioxidant
potential of the extract and extract loaded liposomes were determined. Encapsulation efficiency,
particle size, polydispersity index and zeta potential of the liposomes with extract were monitoring
during 30 days. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the extract were 103.8±1.9 mg of gallic
acid equivalents/g of the extract and 64.2±2.4 mg of catechin equivalents/g of the extract,
respectively; antioxidant potential of the extract was 15.3±2.1 mg of Trolox equivalents/g of the
extract (ABTS assay) and 1.07±0.01 mg/mL of the extract (DPPH assay). Total polyphenol and
flavonoid contents of the extract loaded liposomes were 0.316±0.023 mg of gallic acid
equivalents/mg of lipids and 0.219±0.009 mg of catechin equivalents/mg of lipids, respectively;
antioxidant potential of the sample was 0.134±0.004 mg of Trolox equivalents/mg of lipids (ABTS
assay) and 270.6±10.5 mg/mL of liposomal suspension (DPPH assay). Encapsulation efficiency
was the same during monitoring period and it was amounted 46.6±3.4%. Particle size and
polydispersity index of the liposomes with extract were increased from 618.2±10.9 to 1698.0±104.2
nm and from 0.441±0.007 to 0.589±0.011, respectively, during 30 days. On the other hand, zeta
potential of the extract loaded liposomes was decreased from -10.24±0.95 to -7.21±0.77 mV. R.
canina extract loaded liposomes developed in this study have potential to be used in food,
pharmacological and cosmetic industries due to beneficial health effects of R. canina active
compounds encapsulated into liposomes.

using percolation at ambient temperature (25°C), was encapsulated into Lipoid G liposomes
produced in thin film procedure.
Total polyphenol and
flavonoid contents of the extract loaded liposomes were 0.316±0.023 mg of gallic acid
equivalents/mg of lipids and 0.219±0.009 mg of catechin equivalents/mg of lipids, respectively;
antioxidant potential of the sample was 0.134±0.004 mg of Trolox equivalents/mg of lipids (ABTS
assay) and 270.6±10.5 mg/mL of liposomal suspension (DPPH assay).
canina extract loaded liposomes developed in this study have potential to be used in food,
pharmacological and cosmetic industries due to beneficial health effects of R. canina active
compounds encapsulated into liposomes.",

AB - Rosa canina L. (Rosaceae) is frequently employed in traditional medicine, due to its diuretic,
anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant and analgesic effects. It is rich in various bioactive
compounds, including polyphenols, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, mineral elements and fatty acids.
Microencapsulation tehnique is a promising tool for improving R. canina polyphenols'
functionality, stability and bioavailability. Еlectrostatic extrusion process was carried out to
obtain calcium-alginate beads with encapsulated R. canina extract. In pure extract, total
polyphenol content was 103.8±1.9 mg GAE/g, whereas the concentration of flavonoids was
64.2±2.40 mg CE/g. Furthermore, polyphenol and flavonoid contents in extract loaded hydrogel
beads were 4.68±0.12 mg GAE/g and 2.93±0.23 mg CE/g, respectively. Thus, determined
encapsulation efficiency was 45.04±1.15%. In ABTS test, antioxidant activity of pure extract and
extract loaded hydrogel beads was 15.30±2.10 and 2.93±0.23 mg Trolox/g, respectively. In
DPPH test, IC50 of pure extract and extract loaded hydrogel beads was 1.07±0.01 and
29.32±2.15 mg/mL, respectively. The size of the produced R. canina extract encapsulated
hydrogel particles was 550.30±34.56 µm. In distilled water as a medium, most of polyphenols
were released relatively rapidly from alginate beads (in the first 20 min), and the maximum
release plateau was reached at 60 min. This study demonstrates the potential of using alginate
for encapsulation of R. canina polyphenols, with the aim to improve their functionality,
bioavailability and stability in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

AB - Hydrated iridiumoxyhydroxide (IrOx) films were electrochemically deposited from an alkaline oxalic solution at constant anodic potentials and by applying a potential cycling protocol, in both cases with variation of the electrodeposition time. FromUV-vis spetroscopy of the solution for the deposition and their characterization it was concluded that a mixture of Ir(III)/Ir(IV) monomers participates in the deposition of IrOx film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of IrOx films indicated that both types of films contained hydrated Ir(IV) hydroxide as the dominant species, but in the film deposited by potential cycling the presence of the additional Ir(III) species was evident. The scanning electon microscopy (SEM) analysis of the surface morphology revealed that films deposited by potential cycling were more uniform than the films deposited at a constant potential. The amount of electrochemically active Ir-species on the surface of deposited IrOx films was estimated from the voltammetric charge of the Ir(III)/Ir(IV) transition. Depending on the film electrodeposition parameters, the values between 15 and 1080 nmol cm-2 were obtained. The electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of IrOx films was calculated from cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and ranged from 3 to 131 cm(2) per 1 cm(2) of geometric surface area for various films. The activity and stability of IrOx films toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was investigated in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution under potentiostatic conditions. The intrinsic activity, stated as turnover frequency and specific current density normalized per ECSA, showed that the OER activity of IrOx films deposited by potential cycling are up to two and a half times higher than the activity of films deposited at a constant anodic potential. Potentiostatic stability test showed a decrease in OER current over time for both type of the films. Determination of ECSA, the amount of electroactive Ir species, XPS spectrum and SEM imaging after the test indicated that the decrease in OER activity was caused by partial dissolution and delamination of the film as well as by oxidation of highly active hydroxide Ir(III) species.

AB - Intelligent pedestrian crossings were made with the aim to increase pedestrian safety at poorly lit locations. New technologies include the design of polymer materials that have high performance by optimizing properties such as compression, tensile and impact strengths, wear resistance, hardness and transparency. The desired properties are set up to face the demands of a heavy daily traffic load and enable the functionality. Laminate material consists of the epoxy composite reinforced with silica (SiO2) derived from rice husk waste and a protective thermoplastic polyurethane layer. The top layer of the laminate material is a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) serving as a protective layer with high wear resistance and good adhesion with epoxy composite. Silica obtained from rice husk waste was used in reinforcing of the epoxide in order to improve the mechanical properties, diffuse the light, improve the adhesion with TPU and decrease the production costs. Micro-Vickers hardness of the epoxy composite was increased by 70% with the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2. Impact energy of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 was increased by 272.9% after adding the TPU layer. Compressive strength of the epoxy resin is improved by 16.2% by reinforcement with 15 wt% of SiO2, while the laminate composite material showed 207% higher compressive strength than the commonly used asphalt pavement. Moreover, the addition of 15 wt% of SiO2 improved the adhesion between epoxy composite and TPU layer (11.2%). Thus, obtained laminated material made of the epoxy composite with 15 wt% of SiO2 (obtained from rice husk waste) and TPU598 showed mechanical properties and LED light transmission/diffusion appropriate for application in the intelligent pedestrian crossings.

AB - This work was focused on the synthesis of polyurethane networks (PUNs) based on polycaprolactone (PCL) as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation and 4,4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the parts of the hard segments (HS), by a two-step solution polymerization. In order to find the best ratio between HS and SS to achieve good thermal and mechanical properties, suitable hydrophobicity and morphology of the PUNs, various experimental analyses were conducted. The obtained results revealed that features of the PUNs highly depend on the PCL content. The increase in the PCL content leads to the increase in thermal stability, hydrophobicity and appearance of the microphase separation, but on the other side, it also leads to the decrease in storage modulus in the rubbery plateau, crosslinking density and glass transition temperatures of PUNs. This work shows that features of PUNs can be easily adjusted for a specific application by careful selection of the SS and HS ratio.

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.",

AB - In this study, development of folic acid-loaded liposomes using a basic amino acid, histidine as a solubilizing agent for folic acid was presented, which tackled the poor solubility of this vitamin. The effect of the liposomal membrane modifiers, cholesterol and SPAN 20 on the characteristics of the final formulations was examined. Liposomes prepared from a commercially available purified soybean lecithin (Phospholipon 90G) by proliposome method were between 503 and 877 nm in average diameter, where cholesterol induced enlargement and SPAN.20 reduction of vesicles. High encapsulation efficiency of 84% and drug loading of 0.123 mg g(-1) were achieved, irrespective to the composition. According to AFM images, folic acid-loaded liposomes of a fraction with a nano size were flattened compared to globular empty liposomes. FTIR analysis revealed possible interactions between phospholipids and histidine, while DSC study suggested interactions between folic acid and lipids during heating. Release study done by a Franz diffusion cell showed prolonged release of folic acid from liposomes and the release rate was determined by folic acid solubility.

AB - Komercijalna primena hidrolizata proteina soje još uvek je ograničena zbog male
bioraspoloživosti peptida, gorkog ukusa, higroskopnosti i reaktivnosti u prehrambenim
proizvodima.
Dobijene
multilamelarne vezikule tretirane su ultrazvučnim talasima visokog intenziteta frekvence
20 - 40 kHz. Najmanji i najuniformniji lipozomi, unimodalne raspodele i srednje veličine
Merenjem sposobnosti inhibicije ABTS•+ radikalskog katjona i sposobnosti heliranja Fe2+ jona
trajanja prehrambenih proizvoda.
AB - Soy proteins known for their high nutritional value and pronounced techno-functional properties, can be hydrolyzed by using proteolytic enzymes and thus converted into hydrolysates rich in di-, tri- and oligopeptides. The resulting peptides are carriers of valuable biological activities, which make the soy hydrolysates very important in functional food applications as techno-functional and bioactive ingredients. However, commercial incorporation and application of soy protein hydrolysates can be hinderedby their low bioavailability and instability, bitter taste, hygroscopicity and possibility to interact with the food matrix. The aim of this research is encapsulation of the soy protein hydrolysate in liposomes in order to overcome the stated shortcomings, while preserving the biological activities that protein hydrolysates exhibit. The soy hydrolysate was prepared by a two-step enzymatic hydrolysis of a soy protein concentrate using commercial food-grade proteases, endoprotea se from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (Neutrase (R)) and egzoand endoprotease from Aspergillus oryzae (Flavourzyme (R)) and encapsulated within liposomes. The liposomes were produced by a thin film method using a commercial lipid mixture (Phospolipon (R) 90G) containing mainly phosphatidylcholine. Next, the obtained multilamellar vesicles (MLV) with the soy protein hydrolysate were treated by high-intensity ultrasound waves generated by using (1) an ultrasonic probe at a frequency of 20 kHz and (2) an ultrasonic bath with a frequency 40 kHz. The smallest (310 nm) and uniform (unimodal size distribution) liposomes with the highest efficiency of peptide encapsulation (19 %) were obtained by the probe sonication. The presented results showed that incorporation of the soy protein hydrolysates was achieved within the liposome membrane and caused an increase in the liposome size in all tested formulations, namely: from 297 to 310 nm by using the ultrasonic probe, from 722 to 850 nm by using the ultrasonic bath, while in formulations without the ultrasonic treatmentsthe increase from 2818 to 3464 nm was recorded. The entrapped peptides caused enlargement of all liposomes and the increase in negative charge of zeta potential values, which in the case of MLV liposomes was below -30 mV, indicating high stability of these liposomes. Significant antioxidant activity of the probe-sonicated liposomal formulation was confirmed by the ABTS scavenging ability and iron-chelating activity. Release studies conducted under simulated gastrointestinal conditions confirmed that liposomes provide prolonged release of encapsulated soy protein hydrolysates as compared to diffusion of the free hydrolysate. In the first 75 min, only 20 % of liposome encapsulated soy peptides diffused, which is 2.2-fold lower as compared to the diffusion of the non-encapsulated soy hydrolysate. Liposome encapsulated soy protein hydrolysates may provide the possibility for application in the areas such as food science and technology, with the aim to enhance the nutritional value and shelf life of food products, and develop functional foods.

structure obtained by facile synthesis on the improvement in mechanical properties of acrylate composite
lms. The composite lms consist of UV cured Bisphenol A glycidylmethacrylate/triethylene glycol
dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as reinforcement. Introduced
functionalities considering hydroxyl, both hydroxyl and allyl, and methacrylate groups in POSS-M,
POSS-M-A and POSS-M-Cl, respectively, enabled optimization of system compatibility. Composites
were made with 1, 3 and 5 wt. % of POSS particles. A morphology of hybrid composites was examined
by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cross-linking density (3), storage modulus (G'), damping
factor (tanδ) and Tg of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA).
A higher amount of methacrylate groups contributed to the increased cross-linking points and thus to
increased storage modulus for composites with POSS-M-Cl. Micro Vickers hardness (HV) of hybrid
composites showed incompatibility of POSS-M particles with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix that led to
a decrease of composite hardness when compared to neat polymer matrix. The highest hardness
improvement was obtained by the addition of POSS-M-A reinforcement (increase by 50%). Brazilian
test was used to estimate the elastic modulus by the indirect test method and it indicated a decrease
in mechanical properties with the POSS addition higher than 1 wt.%. Methods used in this paper for
estimation of reinforcing e ect clearly indicate that the incompletely condensed POSS-M-A exhibit the optimal performance of composites based on Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix due to the presence of both
hydroxyl and allyl functional group.

AB - A series of environmentally friendly polyurethane (PU) networks based on polycaprolactone as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation as crosslinking agent was prepared by a two-step polymerization in solution. The chemical structure of the PU networks was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while XRD analysis revealed that these samples are amorphous. Swelling measurements, water absorption study, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical tests and scanning electron microscope revealed that, swelling behavior, hydrophobicity, thermal and mechanical features and morphology of PU networks show clear dependence on polycaprolactone content. The increase of the SS content induced appearance of the microphase separated morphology, increase of thermal stability, elongation at break, hydrophobicity and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran and toluene, but at the same time it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density, glass transition temperatures, rigidity, tensile strength and Young's modulus of PU networks. Scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of PU networks show that their surface is rough, irregular, with flake-like structure, where size of flakes increases with increasing SS content. These results indicate that by choosing adequate SS content, PU coatings with diverse features based on polycaprolactone and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester can be designed for appropriate and desired application.
