AB - The occurrence of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including twelve heavy metal(loid)s (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, Co, V, Fe, Mn), fluoride (F−), and nitrate (NO3−) was evaluated in groundwater in the copper mining and smelter area of Bor city (south Carpathian, eastern Serbia). Groundwater samples were analyzed to determine the extent of pollution, identify natural and anthropogenic input of PTEs, and estimate potential human health risks due to exposure to these substances. The results revealed that the groundwater in the study area was highly contaminated with PTEs, particularly Cu and Zn. Multivariate analysis supported the natural and anthropogenic origin of PTEs, with Fe, Mn, and F− classified as naturally occurring, NO3− resulting from agricultural activities, while other PTEs were linked to smelter/mining processes. Geospatial mapping discovered several hotspots with potential high non-cancer and cancer risks to humans through ingestion pathway. From the studied PTEs, As is the most health risk contributing toxic element. The source-specific probabilistic risk assessment indicated the most significant contribution to the hazard index and total cancer risk from accidental leakage of metallurgical wastewater and wastewater from open mine pits. Monte Carlo analysis identified the human body weight and the ingestion rate as the most sensitive risk parameters. The study underscores the need for stringent environmental management measures, emphasizing the critical role of source-specific risk assessments in mitigating potential hazards associated with metallurgical wastewater and open mine pits.

AB - Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as materials with determined levels of selectivity and specificity for designated analytes have recently gained much attention in various application fields. However, with the growing adoption of green analytical chemistry (GAC) principles, it is essential to investigate the greenness of MIP synthesis and its subsequent application in sample preparation, as well as to evaluate the "green"nature of the developed analytical methodologies, such as dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME). Accordingly, the main objective of this research was to evaluate the greenness of MIP-based glycidyl methacrylate synthesis and MIP use as a DSPME sorbent prior to high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The green perspective of MIP-DSPME prior to HPLC-MS was investigated using various analytical metric tools such as the Analytical Eco-Scale, the Green Analytical Procedure Index, and Analytical GREEnness (AGREE). Since these analytical tools are not fully implementable for the assessment of the greenness of the MIP synthesis, some alternative approaches were used to optimize the synthesis parameters to make the MIP DSPME sorbent as close as possible to the GAC principles. The calculated AGREE score (0.62) and 91 points in the Analytical Eco-Scale for the proposed DSPME technique using MIP indicated a high level of greenness.

AB - A novel porous gold polymer composite was prepared by the functionalization of a glycidyl methacrylate-based copolymer (pGME) with ethylene diamine (pGME-en), and activation by gold (pGME-en/Au), in a simple batch adsorption procedure in an acid solution, at room temperature. Detailed characterization of the pGME-en before and after activation was performed. The main focuses of this research were the design of a method that can enable the recovery of gold and the reuse of this multipurpose sorbent as an antimicrobial agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis pointed out amine groups as the primary binding sites for Au activation, while hydroxyl groups also contributed to the chelation reaction. pGME-en exhibited fast gold adsorption with an adsorption half-time of 5 min and an equilibrium time of 30 min. The maximal adsorption capacity was about 187 mg/g. The analysis of sorption experimental data with a non-linear surface reaction and diffusion-based kinetic models revealed the pseudo-second-order and Avrami model as the best fit, with unambiguous control by liquid film and intra-particle diffusion. The biological activity studies against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans revealed moderate activity of pGME-en/Au against different bacterial and fungal species. pGME-en/Au was stable in a saline solution, with a release of approximately 2.3 mg/g after 24 h.

AB - Magnetic macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate)
nanocomposite was synthesized by suspension copolymerization. The obtained nanocomposite was
characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), mercury porosimetry and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Such magnetic nanocomposite was applied as sorbent for a
dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) for aniline preconcentration from water samples.
The parameters affecting the microextraction were optimized. The screening of DSPME parameters
was determined using Plackett-Burman design (PBD). For the optimization of the most important
factors Central Composite Design (CCD) was used. The analysis of the results showed that the pH
value and temperature of desorption were the most significant factors.

AB - Kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic of arsenate sorption onto magnetic polymer sorbent based
on glycidyl methacrylate were investigated. The maximum sorption capacity of 0.59 mg/g was
obtained. The experimental data were analyzed by seven kinetic models and eight isotherm models.
Nonlinear regression method was used to fit the data to the kinetic and isotherm models. Thus, two
error functions; coefficient of determination and Chi-square statistic test were applied to evaluate
the sorption data. It was shown that arsenate sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with
evident influence of pore and film diffusion. The Freundlich and all three-parameter isotherm
models proved to be the best representatives of arsenate sorption. Thermodynamic studies implied
endothermic and spontaneous process in nature.

AB - Improving the affinity and selectivity of polymeric materials for sorbing ionic species, particularly
heavy metals that pose a high environmental risk, is crucial from an environmental standpoint.
Research on the mechanism of sorption can aid in selecting the optimal sorbent for a given
application. Sorption occurs as a result of various interactions. Sorption includes diffusion of ions
through solution (typically the quickest), diffusion of ions through the boundary layer surrounding
the sorbent surface, diffusion through the porous structure of the sorbent (intra-particle diffusion),
and binding to active sites on sorbent surfaces. Kinetic and equilibrium models explain the sorption
mechanism but not the nature of interactions, which is essential for predicting the selectivity and
efficiency of the sorbent based on particular ionic species. As a result, we were compelled to
approach the molecular level. Active sites on the surface of the magnetic aminofunctionalized
polymer, which are amino functional groups, are used to bind ions to the magnetic nanocomposite.
The sorption process can be viewed as the sum of ion-ligand unit interactions. Unit complex
formation and stability can be studied with statistical analysis and quantum chemical calculations.
The Cambridge database (CSD) improves the crystal structure of complex ion-ligand. Based on
binding energy, DFT (Density Functional Theory) predicts the stability of complex molecules (unit
ion-ligand interactions). To ensure an accurate calculation, it is essential to include all system
parameters, including sorbent structure, ligand properties, ligand charge under specific conditions,
ion forms and charges, and solvatation effects. In the early stages of research, defining the system's
model lets researchers make theoretical predictions about the magnetic aminofunctionalized
polymer sorbent's affinity and selectivity for certain ionic species.

AB - A novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite was prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of magnetic bentonite (MB-PGME) and functionalized with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD). The obtained samples were characterized in terms of structure as well as thermal, magnetic and morphological properties. The sorption of rhenium (Re) and tungsten (W) from aqueous solution onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated considering their contact time and different initial ion concentration, giving possibility for usage of these composites as commercial sorbents. The sorption system follows the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

AB - Statistička analiza podataka dobijenih iz kristalnih struktura, ekstrahovanih iz Kembričke baze
strukturnih podataka (eng.
Statistička analiza interakcija S i Se
(inducibilne azot-monoksid sintaze) nego njegov S derivat (PBIT).
AB - Statistical analysis of data from crystal structures, extracted from Cambridge Structural Database(CSD) have shown that S and Se atoms in nonpolar environment display similar tendencytoward specified type interactions [1]. The most numerous are structures with C−H···Se andC−H···S interactions (~80%), while structures with Se···Se and S···S interactions (~5%) are notablyless numerous (second type of interactions). When S or Se atoms is in a polar environment(there is OH or NH grous in the vicinity), the distribution of certain types of interactions is slightlydifferent. Statistical analysis of S and Se interactions (criteria: d < 4.0 Å (for S) d < 4.5 Å (for Se),Figure) showed the most numerous interactions with the H atom (in both cases about 47%), whileinteractions involving C atoms (interactions with non-polar groups) are second in prevalence.Interactions with non-polar C-H groups are slightly more numerous for Se (30%) than for S atom(21%), while interactions with polar O-H and N-H groups are less numerous for Se (10% in total)than in case of S atom (16% in total). Unexpectedly, the simultaneous interactions of X atom withthe S/Se atom and the polar OH/N-H group (H…X<3.5 Å) are only present in an amount of about20%.Results from docking study suggested that PBISe (Se compound) could be beter inhibitor ofiNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) than its S derivative (PBIT). All orientations of PBISe areclustered at the same site (active site, Figure) leading to much better efficiency of this moleculecompared to PBIT, where three binding sites can be observed (Figure). This is in strong agreementwith experimental results pointing that PBISe kills melanoma cells >10−fold more effectively thanother iNOS inhibitors (PBIT).

AB - Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are new functional polymers with pre-designed
molecular selectivity. Synthesis of MIP is performed using a template added into a
polymer matrix. After that, the template is removed, leaving cavities and active
binding sites. A template could be a target compound, its fragment or a molecule
similar to the target molecule by its size, shape and functional groups (dummy
template). In this way, the molecularly imprinted polymers can be bonded to original
templates, as well as related template molecules. Due to their robustness, long-term
stability, high selectivity, reproducibility, and cost-effectiveness, they are suitable for a
wide range of applications such as chemical and biological sensors, solid-phase
extraction, selective carriers for various types of chromatography, artificial receptors
for drug testing, and human viral pathogens detection. Because of continuous
evolution and fast virus mutation, there is a need for technologies that would evolve
as fast. So far, MIP has been used for the detection of influenza virus, dengue virus,
and human immunodeficiency virus. Detection of different subtypes of influenza virus
(H5N1, H5N3, H1N1, H1N3, and H6N1) is obtained using a quartz sensor QCM
coated with MIP based on methacrylate and N-vinylpyrrolidone. To detect the dengue
virus, a MIP has been developed to recognize the non-structural protein NS1 found in
the virus itself. Linear 15-mer peptides derived from NS1 protein of Japanese
encephalitis are used as a template (Thr-Glu-Leu-Arg-Tir-Ser-Trp-Lis-Thr-Trp-Gli-LisAla-Lis-Met) based on dengue NS1 virus epitope mapping to antibody D2/8-1.
Dopamine is used as a functional monomer for the synthesis of MIP for HIV
detection, while a synthetic peptide with 35 amino acid residues similar to the amino
acid sequence on the glycoprotein HIV-1 gp41 is used as a template. Based on
previous research of similar viruses, this type of polymer is found to have a potential
for coronavirus detection. A specific coronavirus aptamer would be used as a
template, while the monomers would be acrylate-based.
šupljine i aktivna mesta vezivanja.

AB - Chelating copolymers show high efficiency in sorption of different ionic species in aqueous solutions. The specific structure of chelating macroporous copolymers made by the porous matrix and functional groups with the heteroatoms N, O, S and P; allows them to establish various types of interactions with ions and molecules from the immediate surroundings. Furthermore amino-functionalized macroporous copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate poli (GME) has a high capacity and good selectivity for the precious and heavy metal ions over alkali and alkaline earth metals. In this study, aminofunctionalized magnetic macroporous m-poli (GME)-deta was fully characterized in terms of its structural properties using: FTIR, SEM/EDX and XRD analysis. The macroporous copolymer was further used to investigate the sorption of pentavalent vanadium oxyanions from diluted aqueous solutions (Ci = 25 ppm) in a batch system, at room temperature (298 K). The oxyanion concentrations in a solution was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).The pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), Elovich and intra-particle diffusion (IPD) models were used to analyze the kinetic data. The study has shown that sorption is rapid, i.e. the half-sorption time, t1/2 is approximately 1 minute. Initially, it has been the dominant sorption on the surface of the particles and the process has been best described by the PSO model (which takes into account the binding between sorbate and sorbent). The moment it has reached saturation of the sorbents surface active sites, sorption rate decreases significantly because the sorption has been limited by the rate of diffusion through the pores and kinetic has been controlled by the intraparticle diffusion process. IPD kinetic model showed a good fit to the experimental data with R2 values > 0.95.

directly depend on the nature of the functional groups of sorbent and metal ions. In this study, we

aqueous solutions on macroporous amino-functionalized sorbent poly(glycidyl methacrylate-coethylene glycol dimethacrylate), PGME-deta. Quantum-chemical calculations estimated the binding
energies of metal ions to the active sites of the sorbent, on the model systems of individual
fragments, composed of metal ions and ligands, based on statistical analysis of data obtained from
crystal structures. By this theoretical approach, the high degree of correlation with experimental
data was observed for mono-component system.

AB - Vanadium and its compounds have multiple applications in industry, such as in alloys to increase strength and as a catalyst. Vanadium(V) is the dominant form in the aquatic environment and also, it is the most hazardous product which can cause an environmental problem due to its high solubility and toxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible use of a novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidy. methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene alyco. dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and functionalize with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PSME-ED and MB-PGME-HD), for V(V) sorption from

aqueous solution. The influence of contact time on V(V) sorption onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated. All sorption experiments were performed in batch static conditions, at pH 7.6 and room temperature (298 K). Maximum sorption capacities, Qmax, were 2.47 mg/g and 1.94 mg/g for MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD, respectively. Surface-reaction (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich) and particle diffusion based (intra-particle diffusion, liquid film diffusivity model, Bangham, Boyd and McKay's) kinetic models were used for analysis of V(V) sorption kinetic data. Both sorbents obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model, with evident influence of pore diffusion. Desorption experiments of V(V) loaded MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME HD performed with 0.1 M NaOH and 0.1 M HNO3 showed that NaCH is a better stripping agent for V(V) ion within both samples.

AB - Arsenic is a metalloid, which occurs in nature in various forms, but in
natural waters mainly in the form of pentavalent oxyanion of arsenate As(V) and
trivalent arsenite As(III), which dominates under anaerobic conditions. Arsenic
water pollution is a serious problem due to its pronounced negative impact on
human health. This paper describes the kinetic and equilibrium studies of the
sorption mechanism of oxyanion As(V) in monocomponent aqueous solutions on
a silanized magnetic amino-functionalized copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate
and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate m-Si-PGME-deta. It has been shown that the
sorption of As(V) on m-Si-PGME-deta is a rapid process, initially controlled by
ion diffusion rate through solution. After achieving the saturation of the sorbent
surface, the sorption rate decreases, because the sorption rate determines
the process of intraparticle pore diffusion. The maximum sorption capacity is
5.61 μmolˑg-1.
AB - Arsen je metaloid, koji pripada IV periodi i 15. grupi periodnog sistema, široko rasprostranjen
u Zemljinoj kori u obliku različitih vrsta minerala. U vodenoj sredini pretežno se nalazi u obliku
petovalentnog oksianjona аrsenаta As(V) i trovalentnog аrsenita As(III) koji dominira u anaerobnim
uslovima. Zаgаđenje vode аrsenom predstavlja ozbiljan problem zbog izraženog negаtivnog efekta
ovog elementa nа ljudsko zdrаvlje.
ovom radu opisano je ispitivanje efikasnosti sorbenta na bazi silaniziranog magnetita i aminofunkcionalizovanog kopolimera glicidil metakrilata i etilen glikol dimetakrilata, m-Si-PGME-deta, za
uklanjanje petovalentnog oksianjona arsena iz vodenih rastvora. Mehanizam sorpcije oksianjona
As(V) na sorbentu m-Si-PGME-deta ispitan je praćenjem kinetičkih i ravnotežnih parametara u
monokomponentnim vodenim rastvorima.
jona u rastvoru, zbog čega i kinetika sorpcije u toj fazi odgovara modelu pseudo-drugog reda. Po
dostizanju saturacije površine sorbenta, dolazi do rapidnog opadanja brzine sorpcije jer postaje
dominantno vezivanje jona za aktivna mesta u unutrašnjosti sorbenta, kada proces unutarčestične
difuzije kroz pore sorbenta određuje brzinu vezivanja jona, što najbolje opisuje kinetički model
IPD.
Maksimalan kapacitet sorpcije iznosi 5.61 µmolˑg-1.

AB - Although being essential for biological functions, molybdenum high concentrations (>5 ppm)
in wastewater and groundwater cause an environmental problem, so its removal becomes greatly
significant. In this study, Mo(VI) sorption ability of amino-functionalized macroporous copolymer
(PGME-deta) from aqueous solutions was investigated. Batch Mo(VI) sorption was investigated by
varying pH, initial concentration and temperature. The Mo(VI) ions concentration was monitored
by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Sorption kinetics data
were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. Thermodynamic parameters
revealed spontaneous and endothermic nature of Mo(VI) sorption by PGME-deta. Best fit of
equilibrium data was obtained for Langmuir isotherm.

AB - One of the foremost concern in thermal power plants is the formation of deposits of corrosion products
in diverse areas of the water/ steam cycle. This deposition process causes local overheating and rupture
of boiler tubes, damages of turbines and other segments of power units, that ultimately leads to sizable
efficiency loss. The corrosion products are metal oxides usually present in colloidal form and tend to
precipitate on the heat exchange surfaces. In this paper a new approach to prevention deposit using
electrokinetic properties of colloidal particles is discussed. The mechanism of deposition formation is
outlined considering the role of electrostatic interactions between the steel wall surface and colloidal
particles. Furthermore, utilization of zeta potential data in deposit predicting and control is thoroughly
elucidated. It was inferred that described concept is applicable in power industry through changing
electrokinetic potential of colloidal particle what is attainable either by modification of structure of
adsorption layer of metal oxide particles or by altering pH of boiler water. It was stated that exploiting
surface properties of corrosion product for controlling and mitigation deposition in power chemistry
circuits may have a huge benefit for power plants improving their availability, reliability and
performances.

AB - Three nonporous methacrylate polymer samples were synthesized by suspension
polymerization, and subsequently investigated. The surface area and the surface
morphology of the spherical beads were examined by the BET method from the
low-temperature adsorption isotherms and by scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), respectively. Thermal behaviour of the two homopolymer samples,
poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)
(PEGDMA), and the copolymer sample poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene
glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME) was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis
(TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All samples exhibit complex
thermal degradation behavior. The copolymer is intermediate in stability between
PGMA and PEGDMA.
