AB - Trichinella spiralis possess the potential to induce tolerance and restrain excessive immune responses, thus
exerting beneficial effect on the outcome of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the animal
model of human disease multiple sclerosis. Trichinella achieves this by continuous release of its excretoysecretory (ES L1) products in the form of a complex mixture of individual components and extracellular vesicles
(TsEVs), preferentially exsosomes. Our previous results suggested that the complex modulation of the host
immune response is achieved by ES L1 products or its individula components, which induce the maturation
of dendritic cells towards tolerogenic status. A new delivery system, based on nanomaterials as carriers of ES
L1, was designed to resemble what happens in nature, ie. spontaneous release of Trichinella products over
an extended period of time using a less invasive route of administration than all previously described for the
treatment of autoimmune diseases. PLGA biodegradable nanofibers loaded with ES L1 (PLGA-ES L1), were
used as subcutaneous implants. The tretment proved to be safe with no side effects, successful in delivering
parasite products and mitigating the course of relapsing/remitting EAE in Dark Agouti rats. The mechanisms
we examined included events at the systemic level and target tissue, spinal cord, that explain the shift from the
pro- to anti-inflammatory responses and success of treatment. PLGA-ES L1 treatment also prevents the EAEinduced disruption of intestinal epithelial barrier. It diminished the inflammation by lowering the expression
of TNF-α in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and succesfully maintain the expression of mRNA for claudin, the most
important tight junction protein in GIT. Obseved protective effect was acompained with the re-establishment of gut microbiota diversity that was disturbed in EAE-induced animals.

AB - The feasibility study of using different kinds of slag as constituents in construction materials is presented in this paper. As possible materials, slag from silicothermic process of magnesium production is used in fresh and granulated form as binder material and aggregate, and slag formed in process of lead-acid batteries recycling is also added into the mixture. The mixtures are prepared and investigated for their chemical, mineralogical and physical-mechanical properties. Granulated or hydrated magnesium slag is proven to be used as aggregate in mortars and light concrete, fresh magnesium slag showed good pozzolanic properties and is used as a sole binder in decorative and thermo-insulation mortars, and the mixture of magnesium and secondary lead slag with 15% of cement added showed better mechanical properties than standard concrete blocks, considering its lower specific gravity TCLP tests conducted for the building material containing secondary lead slag showed that the material meets the standards for safe disposal.

AB - The impact of airborne pollution by slag from magnesium production was analyzed under different climate conditions. The slag is characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis and atomic absorption analysis. The dominant phase was the gamma modification of dicalcium silicate (gamma-2CaO SiO2) with significant amounts of perclas (MgO), gehlenite - 2CaO Al2O3 SiO2, akermanite - 2CaO MgO 2SiO(2) and portlandite Ca(OH)(2). The granulometric composition of the slag was within the range of 100 x 10(-3)divided by 0.090 x 10(-3) m. Ad hoc measurements were performed on site in June at 300 and 600 m distance from the slag deposit, which showed high Total Suspended Particles (TSP) concentrations. Imputing the results of an experimental investigation of the dust emission for wind velocities of 5, 7, and 10 m/s and within the range of relative humidity from 10 divided by 50% into SCREENVIEW software, the obtained values on the diagram showed good agreement with those of measurements on site. The simulation, that considered the landscape and wind increases over a 20 year period, showed that the dust concentration will be over the Maximum Allowable Concentration (MAC) up to 1400 m from the deposit, for an average wind speed of 3.0 m/s, a relative humidity of 37% and up to 4000 m under unstable weather conditions.
