AB - Cotton yarn was oxidized using the various concentrations and pH of potassium permanganate solutions, in order to investigate the influence of oxidation parameters on chemical, mechanical and sorption properties of cotton. The oxidation progress was monitored through weight loss, carbonyl and carboxyl group content, tensile strength, moisture sorption, crystallinity change, surface charge and morphology of modified samples. The carboxyl groups were introduced into the oxidized cotton up to 0.3 mmol center dot g(-1), while the weight loss was up to 5%. The oxidized samples, compared with untreated cotton, exhibited lower tensile strength, higher moisture sorption and surface roughness. Surface charge was evaluated through measurement of zeta potential at different pH of electrolyte, and the correlation was established between carboxyl group content and zeta values measured at neutral pH, which proved that zeta potential can be a valuable tool for characterizing changes in the structure of oxidized cellulose textile materials.

AB - The main objective of this study was to obtain viscose fabric
functionalized by chitosan with improved antibacterial properties. In
order to improve interactions between viscose fabric and chitosan, viscose
fabric was coated with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) before
functionalization by chitosan. Fabrics were characterized using elemental
analysis and zeta potential measurements. Carboxyl and aldexyde group
content, breaking strength and antibacterial activity were also evaluated.
Results show that coating with TOCN improved simultaneously mechanical and
antibacterial properties of functionalized viscose fabric against S.aureus making it more washing durable.

AB - The main objective of this study was to obtain chitosan functionalized viscose fabric with improved antibacterial properties and washing durability. In this regard carboxyl and aldehyde groups, as binding points for irreversible chitosan attachment into/onto viscose fabric, were introduced by two different pretreatments: 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO) oxidation and coating with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, breaking strength and antibacterial testing were used to evaluate the influence of these pretreatments on chitosan binding, but also on chemical, electrokinetic, morphological, mechanical and antibacterial properties of pretreated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabrics. Washing durability of chitosan functionalized viscose was monitored through changes in the chitosan content, electrokinetic and antibacterial properties after multiple washing. TOCN coating improves mechanical properties of fabric, while TEMPO oxidation deteriorates them. The results show that both pretreatments improve chitosan adsorption and thus antibacterial properties, which are highly durable to washing. After five washings, the chitosan functionalized pretreated viscose fabrics preserve their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, while antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was lost. TOCN coated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabric is a high value-added product with simultaneously improved antibacterial and mechanical properties, which may find application as medical textiles.

AB - In this paper, the principles of the action of the selective (NaIO4 and
2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-TEMPO radical) and non-selective (H2O2 and
KMnO4) oxidation agents on cellulose are presented. Their importance in modifying the
existing properties or giving new properties to cellulosic materials, as well as examples of
their applications are also given. The oxidation product - oxycellulose presents the base for
obtaining a wide range of materials for special applications. Particularly, the influence of
TEMPO-mediated oxidation on natural and man-made cellulosic fibers is presented, with a
detailed overview on the type and quantity of introduced functional groups, changes in
structure, sorption and mechanical properties. Also, we described the use of TEMPOmediated oxidation for the production of cellulosic nano-materials in the form of
dispersions, particles and films, as well as the potential application of these nano-structural
materials.
AB - U ovom radu predstavljeni su principi dejstva selektivnih (NaIO4
i 2,2,6,6-tetrametilpiperidin-1-oksil - TEMPO radikal) i neselektivnih (H2O2 i
strukturi, sorpcionim i mehaničkim svojstvima. Opisana je i primena TEMPO-oksidacije za dobijanje celuloznih nanomaterijala u obliku disperzija, čestica i
filmova, kao i potencijal primene ovih nanostrukturnih materijala.

AB - Viscose yarn was submitted to oxidation using different sodium periodate concentrations for various periods of time in order to investigate the influence of oxidation on the chemical and sorption properties of the resulting yarns. The oxidation progress was monitored through periodate consumption, aldehyde group content and weight loss of the modified samples. The aldehyde groups were introduced into the oxidized viscose up to 1.284 mmol/g, while the weight loss was generally of about 5%. Compared to the untreated yarn, the oxidized samples exhibited lower water retention and iodine sorption values - of 32.4% and 53.6%, respectively, while moisture sorption values decreased for an oxidation time up to 180 min and increased when the time of oxidation was longer, up to 360 min. The changes in viscose yarn wettability, because of the oxidation treatment, were evaluated based on the parameters determined by the capillary rise method, which are related to the coefficient of diffusion and radius of pores.

AB - Cotton fibers containing different amounts of aldehyde and carboxyl groups were prepared by varying TEMPO oxidation conditions and then employed as carriers for trypsin immobilization. Depending on the functional group type present in the oxidized fiber, trypsin was immobilized through the ionic interaction or together with the Schiff's base formation. The TEMPO oxidation caused changes in the chemical and physical properties of the modified cotton, which were evaluated by determining the aldehyde and carboxyl group content, sorption and electrokinetic properties, and surface morphology of fibers. The trypsin activity was assayed with N-alpha-benzoyl- DL-arginine p-nitroanilide hydrochloride, and the protein content was determined by the Bradford method. The impact of oxidized fiber functional groups on the amount, activity and stability of the immobilized trypsin was investigated. The cotton fibers oxidized under the most severe conditions (4.84 mmol/g NaClO, 180 min) and having the highest functional groups content (0.79 mmol/g) exhibited the maximum amount of immobilized trypsin of about 6.5 mg/g. However, the immobilized activity and the stability were much higher for the fibers containing both carboxyl and aldehyde groups compared to the corresponding fibers containing only carboxyl groups.

AB - In this paper, we merge the unique properties of cotton and silver in order to obtain antimicrobial cotton fibers. The sorption properties of cotton were improved by selective TEMPO-mediated oxidation, i.e. oxidation with sodium hypochlorite, sodium bromide and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl radical (TEMPO), and evaluated by determination of moisture sorption and water retention. Increases of up to 1.55 and 4.7 times were obtained for moisture sorption and water retention value, respectively. The antimicrobial properties were achieved by incorporation of silver into TEMPO-oxidized cotton by combination of Ag+ chemisorption from aqueous AgNO3 and reduction of Ag+ to Ag-0 by cellulose itself. The amount of incorporated silver was in the range from 0.102 to 0.806 mmol/g fibers. The antimicrobial activity of the obtained fibers against pathogens C. albicans, S. aureus and E. coli was evaluated. An attempt has been made to explain the roles of the introduced functionalities and changes in the sorption properties of the TEMPO-oxidized cotton on silver deposition.

AB - This paper is focused on investigating the electrical behavior of cotton yarn oxidized with nonselective oxidation agent, hydrogen peroxide, through measurement of structural changes in cotton, and elucidating the influence of these changes on electrical resistance. Significant connection between the nature of the introduced polar groups, crystallinity index, water retention ability, silver sorption and electrical resistance was found. The measurement and possible control of electrical resistance could help anticipate and control the textile materials' tendency to generate static electricity, since these two parameters are closely connected and mutually dependent.

AB - In this study, a biologically active fibrous material was designed by immobilizing trypsin on viscose fibers. The viscose yarn was first oxidized with sodium periodate to produce aldehyde groups and then employed as a support for subsequent immobilization of trypsin through bovine serum albumin. The oxidation by sodium periodate caused changes in the chemical and physical properties of the modified yarn samples, which were evaluated by determining the aldehyde group content, fineness and tensile strength of yarn. The viscose fibers oxidized under the most severe conditions (0.4 % NaIO4, 360 min) exhibited the maximum amount of introduced aldehyde groups (1.284 mmol/g), but also the highest decrease in tensile strength. The trypsin activity was assayed with N-alpha-benzoyl-DL-arginine p-nitroanilide hydrochloride, whereas the amount of bound trypsin was determined by Bradford method. Trypsin immobilized on oxidized viscose yarn retained 97.3 and 83.8 % of the initial activity over 60 days of storage at 4 and 25 A degrees C, respectively, and remained firmly attached to the carrier. The potential application of obtained bioactive fibers is in the treatment of wounds.

AB - The effect of periodate oxidation on the chemical and sorption properties of cotton yarn was investigated by determining aldehyde group content, moisture sorption, water retention and iodine sorption. Oxidation of cotton yarn was performed by varying concentration of sodium periodate solution and reaction time. To measure the aldehyde content present in the oxidized cotton, the aldehyde groups were selectively oxidized to carboxyl groups with sodium chlorite at pH 4-5, at room temperature for 48 h, and carboxyl group content was determined by modified calcium-acetate method. Differences in the sorption properties of untreated and oxidized cotton samples were obtained using conventional methods. The aldehyde groups were introduced into the oxidized cotton up to 99.2 μmol/g. Compared to the untreated fibers, oxidized cotton samples exhibited higher moisture sorption (up to 9%) and lower water retention values (up to 19%) and iodine sorption values (up to 31%). Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the crystalline structure of cellulose is not significantly changed by periodate oxidation, which is of great importance for textile material production.

AB - Cotton yarn was first oxidized by sodium periodate to introduce aldehyde groups which were able to react with amino groups of trypsin to form Schiff's base, and result in cotton yarn immobilized trypsin. The effect of periodate oxidation on the chemical and physical properties of cotton yarn was evaluated by determining aldehyde group content, fineness and tensile strength of yarn. Measurements of protein load from Bradford assay and catalytic activity in hydrolysis of N-alpha-benzoyl-DL-arginine p-nitroanilide were made for the immobilized enzyme. The maximum amount of immobilized trypsin was 6.1 mg/g dried cotton yarn. Trypsin immobilized on oxidized cotton yarn retained 90% and 72% of the initial activity at 4 degrees C and 25 degrees C, respectively, over 60 days of storage in physiological solution.
