AB - Abstract: N-doped TiO2/carbon composites (TiO2/CN) with different nitrogen content, were obtained starting from titanium isopropoxide and glucose, and by varying the amount of melamine, added to starting reaction mixture. For comparison, an undoped sample (TiO2/C) was also prepared. Structural and surface characteristics were determined through scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2/CN composites was examined via photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and multiclass pharmaceuticals from water solution. It was found that N doping of TiO2/carbon composites induced changes in structural and surface characteristics of TiO2/CN composites, improving their adsorption, but decreasing photocatalytic efficiency. Nevertheless, TiO2/CN0.05 composite obtained by the hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of glucose and 0.05 g melamine showed the highest efficiency for removing selected pharmaceuticals and methylene blue from aqueous solutions through the combined processes of adsorption in the dark, and photocatalytic degradation under UV and visible irradiation.

AB - The main objective of this study was to obtain viscose fabric
functionalized by chitosan with improved antibacterial properties. In
order to improve interactions between viscose fabric and chitosan, viscose
fabric was coated with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) before
functionalization by chitosan. Fabrics were characterized using elemental
analysis and zeta potential measurements. Carboxyl and aldexyde group
content, breaking strength and antibacterial activity were also evaluated.
Results show that coating with TOCN improved simultaneously mechanical and
antibacterial properties of functionalized viscose fabric against S.aureus making it more washing durable.

AB - The main objective of this study was to obtain chitosan functionalized viscose fabric with improved antibacterial properties and washing durability. In this regard carboxyl and aldehyde groups, as binding points for irreversible chitosan attachment into/onto viscose fabric, were introduced by two different pretreatments: 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO) oxidation and coating with TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, breaking strength and antibacterial testing were used to evaluate the influence of these pretreatments on chitosan binding, but also on chemical, electrokinetic, morphological, mechanical and antibacterial properties of pretreated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabrics. Washing durability of chitosan functionalized viscose was monitored through changes in the chitosan content, electrokinetic and antibacterial properties after multiple washing. TOCN coating improves mechanical properties of fabric, while TEMPO oxidation deteriorates them. The results show that both pretreatments improve chitosan adsorption and thus antibacterial properties, which are highly durable to washing. After five washings, the chitosan functionalized pretreated viscose fabrics preserve their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, while antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli was lost. TOCN coated and chitosan functionalized viscose fabric is a high value-added product with simultaneously improved antibacterial and mechanical properties, which may find application as medical textiles.

AB - Activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared using plane tree seed (PTS) as a cheap and renewable raw material. The plane tree seeds were firstly treated combining magnetic (MM) and ultrasonic mixing (USM) during 0.5, 1 and 3 h in 1 M, 3 M and 6 M of H3PO4 solutions, and then activated at 260 degrees C during 20 h (low temperature hydrothermal carbonization-low HTC) in above mentioned solutions of the same molarity. The influence of combined mixing and activation processes on physical, structural and morphological properties, and their optimization was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

AB - dThe possibility of sorption of technetium-99 in the form of pertechnetate anion (TcO(4)(-)) and the sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) from aqueous solution by chelating polymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) were investigated. Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PGME), with different amount of the crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, EGDMA), were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine (deta). We propose that nonspecific sorption of pertechnetate anion via electrostatic interactions takes place at the protonated amino groups of macroporous crosslinked copolymer. The results of batch experiments per-formed at pH 1-14 showed fast sorption kinetics for removing TcO(4)(-) by amino-functionalized PGME-deta in a wide range of pH, that is, from 1.0 to 9.0. Almost complete removal of TcO(4)(-) (91-98%) was reached within 180 min in the stated pH range (1.0-9.0), with the sorption half-times of under 25 min. The partitioning coefficients of linear adsorption isotherms, with 180-min equilibrium time, reach the high values of 2130 mL g(-1) and 1698 mL g(-1) for the two samples of synthesized PGME-deta.

The partitioning coefficients of linear adsorption isotherms, with 180-min equilibrium time, reach the high values of 2130 mL g(-1) and 1698 mL g(-1) for the two samples of synthesized PGME-deta.",

AB - Complexes based on amidated pectin (AP) and poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) were prepared by casting films from solutions of AP and PIA in different ratios with the pectin amount ranging from 10% to 90% by mass. The complexes were investigated by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetry (TG). In all investigated ratios of AP/PIA glassy transparent films with a uniform structure were obtained. The results of elemental analysis confirmed the composition of the complexes, and FTIR spectroscopy has shown carboxylic and amide peak shifting, indicating complex formation between AP and PIA. Comparison of thermograms of AP/PIA films with different ratios of AP indicated that the increase of the amount of AP increases the thermal stability of the films by retarding the onset of the main degradation processes.

AB - The free radical copolymerisation of itaconic anhydride and methyl methacrylate in solution was studied at 60 °C. The copolymer composition was determined by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and the obtained monomer reactivity ratios were calculated, rITA = 1.35±0.11; rMMA = 0.22±0.22 (by the Fineman-Ross method) and rITA = 1.27±0.38; rMMA = 0.10±0.05 (by the Mayo-Lewis method). The synthesised copolymers were modified by reaction with di-n-butyl amine. The copolymer composition after amidation was determined by elemental analysis via the nitrogen content. Amidation of the anhydride units in the copolymers with di-n-butyl amine resulted in complete conversion to itaconamic acid.

AB - Semi-IPNs based on polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly(itaconic acid) (PIA) were prepared by two different techniques, polymerizing itaconic acid in the presence of polyacrylamide gel (Samples I) and by makiug the polyacrylamide gel in the presence of poly(itaconic acid) (Samples 11), with different PAAm/PIA ratios. The swelling behavior of the semi-IPNs reveals that gels with low PIA content swell more, while those with high PIA content swell less than a pure PAAm gel, probably due to the formation of intermacromolecular gel-polymer complexes on the basis of hydrogen bonds. The results of thermal analysis indicate an improved therinal stability of the hydrogels and complexes compared with PIA and PAAm.
