AB - A great deal of interest is directed towards g-C3N4 (CN) for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI), due to its high stability in acidic conditions and medium band gap (~2,7 eV), but its practical application is limited because of the high recombination rate of electrons and holes. Sulfuric acid treatment is considered as one of the methods for optimizing properties of CN by certain surface and possibly structure modifications which would lead to an increased specific surface area (Sp) and more active sites, anchoring electronegative groups to enhance charge separation, exfoliated bulk CN into the nanosheets, etc. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of H2SO4 concentration and other experimental conditions (temperature and time) on physicochemical properties and photocatalytic efficiency of CN.

AB - Anorthite ceramics (CaAl2Si2O8) was obtained by slip casting of water suspension of kaolin (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O) and CaCO3 as a source of CaO. A relative density of 87 % of the theoretical density was achieved after a 3-h-long sintering of green samples at 1200 °C. It was found that slip casting allows the fabrication of anorthite with relatively small pores (<8 μm) which was beneficial for achieving a high fracture strength of 129 MPa and good thermal shock resistance. For a quantitative measurement of thermal shock resistance, a critical temperature interval (ΔTc) was determined by a reduction in the mean fracture strength of at least 30 %. The experimentally determined ΔTc of 300 °C was higher than the value calculated by the equation assuming that the thermal stress created during quenching causes the fracture. It was found that the discrepancy between experimental and calculated values of ΔTc could be explained by an introduction of cracks of various sizes by indentation method and careful observation of crack growth initiation after quenching from various temperatures. It is believed that the reason for the discrepancy lies in the different nature of stress that was used in the theoretical calculation and the stress that acts during sample quenching.

AB - The Kevlar fabric composites have a wide range of applications in the
body armor and lightweight vehicle-armor structures. Nanoparticles are one of the
most common nanofillers for these structures. In this research, the testing specimens have been made from the Kevlar fabrics impregnated with the poly (vinyl
butyral)/ethanol solution which had been reinforced with the ZnO nanoparticles.
The two-layered composite samples have been fabricated by means of hot compression. The immersion of the square Kevlar/PVB specimens for the water uptake
measurements has been performed according to the ISO 62 standard. The specimens have been immersed in a water bath filled with the distilled water (40 °C) in
the period of 8 weeks. The Kevlar/PVB specimens have been tested in accordance
with the ASTM D 3039 standard for the tensile properties and the ASTM D 790–
03 standard for the flexural properties. The tensile and bending characteristics of
the dry specimens have been compared with the ones that had undergone the water
immersion.

AB - The study aimed toward the development of biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric films (starch-chitosan and starch-chitosan-cyclodextrin) with biologically valuable green tea leaf extract using an environmentally friendly integrated process of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and supercritical solvent impregnation (SSI). The SFE-SSI process parameters were selected through the initial estimation of the SFE parameters effect (temperatures 35 and 70 °C and the addition of co-solvents ethanol, ethanol/water, and water). The present early-stage work showed that an increase in temperature increased extraction yield (from 0.9 to 4.2%) and caffeine content while it decreased polyphenolic and pigment content as well as antioxidant activity and extract loading onto films (from 7.1 to 0.1%). The addition of co-solvents to sc-CO2 had an adverse effect on extract yield, composition, and loading. The highest recorded total phenolic, flavonoid, chlorophyll A, and caffeine content in extracts were 136.5 mg GE/g, 22.7 mg RE/g, 8.1 mg/g, and 460.0 mg/g, respectively.

AB - Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. The modification of their properties using the reinforcement is of key importance for the possible applications. Layered double hydroxides are materials that are easily synthesized by several techniques giving the possibility to modulate the chemical composition and morphology of the reinforcement and they consist of a divalent and a trivalent anion hydroxide and the layers can be exfoliated and thus provide a material interesting for composite reinforcement. In this paper, Mn was used as a divalent and Al as a trivalent cation. The obtained particles were used as reinforcement for the preparation of composites in 1, 3, and 5 wt% quantities and prepared samples were compared to the matrix consisting of PMMA. Physical mechanical properties of the sample having the best mechanical properties (with 3 wt% of MnAl-LDH filers) exhibited 6.38% modulus of elasticity, 27% hardness, and 10% tensile strength improved values compared to the clear PMMA matrix. Toughness was lowered in this sort of composite compared to the pure matrix. abstract = "Acrylate polymers are used in several applications such as dentistry, medicine, and industry. Highlights: MnAl-LDH-PMMA composites improved modulus, strength, hardness Loss of toughness is tolerable for 3 wt% reinforcement Viscoelastic properties are improved for composites compared to matrix.",

AB - The sepiolite/ZrO2 composites were prepared in toluene using sepiolite and zirconium propoxide by two different procedures. The efficiency of the obtained adsorbents for the removal of phosphate from water solutions was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis (EDS). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, DTA/TG thermal analyses, specific surface area determination and determination of the point of zero charge were used to characterize the obtained composites, Sep-Zrl and Sep-ZrII. The results indicate that ZrO, in the form of fine nanoparticles was successfully loaded onto the surface of sepiolite fibers. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherms were investigated to establish the adsorption rates, maximum capacities and possible mechanisms of the adsorption of phosphate from water onto Sep-Zrl and Sep-Zrll composites at a pH of 4. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm follow the pseudo second-order equation and Freundlich adsorption model, respectively.

AB - Great attention is directed towards potential visible light photocatalyst, g-C3N4, due to its simple preparation, high stability, low cost and medium band gap (-2,7 eV)

[1]. However, its practical application is limited, mostly because of the high recombination rate of electrons and holes. One of the methods for optimizing g-C3N4 properties is the chemical exfoliation with concentrated acid. It was reported that treating g-C,N4 with sulfuric acid leads to certain surface and structure modifications, which would further enhance the surface functionality and provide better dispersion of metal/semiconductor nanoparticles when forming heterojunction [l] Different researches showed that chemical etching, i.e. exfoliating bulk g-C,N, to obtain nanosheets with concentrated H.SO, could increase the specific surface area, obtain more active sites and convert surface charge. Furthermore, introducing the electron-withdrawing groups at the edge of g-C;N, nanosheets by using oxidizing agent can boost electron migration and enhance the charge separation, but also expand its band gap [2].

In this work, concentrated H2O4 was used to exfoliate bulk g-C,N, and produce g-C,Na nanosheets (sample E-C3N4) and the improved Hummer's method [2] was used for synthesis of oxygen functionalized g-C,N4 (sample EO-C,N4).

The properties of the photocatalysts were studied by FESEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, PL and DRS analysis, as well as by determination of the point of zero charge (pHpzc) and the number of acidic and basic surface functional groups. Photocatalytic reduction of

Cr(VI) was tested at a constant solution concentration (10 mg/l), at pH = 3, under the
simulated visible irradiation and in the presence of citric acid as a hole scavenger. It was determited that acid treatment led to the decreasing in the specific surface area, lowering the pHeze, slightly increased bandgap energy but also enhanced photocatalytic efficiency and the number of surface functional groups.

AB - The sepiolite/ZrO2 composites were prepared by sepiolite (Sep) modification with zirconium propoxide in toluene at room temperature for 24 h (Sep–ZrI) or 95 °C for 4 h (sample Sep–ZrII). The efficiency of the obtained composites for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions at initial pH = 4 and pH = 8 was investigated. Characterization of the samples shows that synthesis at a higher temperature for a shorter time provides a slightly higher content of amorphous Zr phase, which is deposited on the sepiolite fibers as a thin layer and agglomerated nanoparticles. Compared to Sep, the composites have a lower point of zero charge and higher specific surface area and pore volume. The adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption capacities of the composites are approximately the same at both initial pH and higher at initial pH = 4 than at pH = 8. The XPS and ATR-FTIR of Sep–ZrI before and after adsorption identifies the formation of inner-sphere complexes as the mechanism of phosphate adsorption. The slow release during desorption with NaOH solution confirms the strong bonds of the phosphates with the surface of the composites.

AB - The restoration of large bone defects caused by trauma, tumor resection, or infection is a major clinical problem in orthopedics and dentistry because postoperative infections, corrosion, and limited osteointegration of metal implants can lead to loosening of the implant. The aim of this study was to improve the surface properties of a 3D-printed (electron beam melting) Ti6Al4V-based macroporous scaffold by multilayer coating with bioactive silicate glasses (BAGs) and hydroxyapatite doped with a silver (AgHAP) or AgHAP additionally sonochemically modified with ZnO (ZnO-AgHAP). The coated scaffolds AgHAP_BAGs_Ti and ZnO-AgHAP_BAGs_Ti enhanced cytocompatibility in L929 and MRC5 cell lines and expressed bioactivity in simulated body fluid. A lower release of vanadium ions in coated samples compared to bare Ti scaffold indicates decreased dissolution of Ti alloy in coated samples. The coated samples reduced growth ofEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureusfor 4-6 orders of magnitude. Therefore, the 3D-printed Ti-based scaffolds coated with BAGs and (ZnO-)AgHAP have great potential for application as a multifunctional implant with antibacterial properties for the restoration of defects in load-bearing bones.

Therefore, the 3D-printed Ti-based scaffolds coated with BAGs and (ZnO-)AgHAP have great potential for application as a multifunctional implant with antibacterial properties for the restoration of defects in load-bearing bones.",

AB - A biphasic [Mn(dipya)(H2O)4](tpht)/{[Zn(dipya)(tpht)]·H2O}n complex material, I (dipya = 2,2’-dipyridylamine, tpht2– = dianion of terephthalatic acid) was synthesized by ligand exchange reaction and characterized by XRPD and FTIR spectroscopy. A ZnO/ZnMn2O4 composite, II, has been prepared via thermal decomposition of I in an air atmosphere at 450 °C. XRPD, FTIR and FESEM analyses of II revealed the simultaneous presence of spherical nanoparticles of wurtzite ZnO and elongated nanoparticles of spinel ZnMn2O4. The specific surface area of II was determined by the BET method, whereas the volume and average size of the mesopores were calculated in accordance with the BJH method. The measurements of the mean size, polydispersity index and zeta potential showed colloidal instability of II. Two band gap values of 2.4 and 3.3 eV were determined using UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, while the measurements of photoluminescence revealed that II is active in the blue region of the visible spectrum. Testing of composite II as a pigmentary material showed that it can be used for the colouring of a ceramic glaze.

AB - In this work, in order to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO, the optimal CeO2 content in ZnO powders was determined by varying the quantity of CeO2 from 0 to 10 mol%. The structural, microstructural, optical, textural, and photocatalytic properties of the hydrothermally obtained ZnO and CeO2/ZnO nanocomposites have been investigated by using the XRPD, FESEM, HRTEM/SAED, BET, and UV–Vis techniques. Detailed characterization revealed that CeO2, having spherical nanodots of about 5 nm with a large surface area, was distributed onto the ZnO surface, whose crystallites displayed a bimodal distribution, from nano-to micro-crystals. The morphology of ZnO is a combination of nanograins and microrods that further makes a 3-D tie-like morphology. The nanocomposite containing 5 mol% of CeO2 showed about 30% better photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of Reactive Orange 16 dye compared to other samples under simulated solar radiation. In addition, the kinetics and mechanism of photocatalytic degradation were also proposed based on the photocatalytic activity and scavenger tests.

AB - Elemental sulfur (S8) is a corrosive sulfur compound which was found to be extremely reactive to silver, causing intensive silver sulfide (Ag2S) deposition on on-load tap changer (OLTC) contacts in power transformers. A highly selective adsorbent (HSA), called Tesla’Ssorb, for the removal of S8 from mineral insulating oils was prepared from raw material (RM) using the novel procedure. In this study, the adsorption properties of HSA for the removal of S8 from the oil were determined. RM and HSA were characterized using various techniques, such as field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The performance of HSA was determined by adsorption equilibrium, thermodynamic, and kinetic study through batch experiments, at various temperatures and initial concentrations of S8. The obtained results were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and it was found that equilibrium data were fitted better with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 4.84 mg of S8/g of HSA at 353 K. Thermodynamic parameters, such as enthalpy (ΔH°), Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), and entropy (ΔS°), were calculated and it was found that the sorption process was spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic in nature (ΔH° > 0). It was found that the adsorption of S8 follows pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the activation energy indicated the activated chemisorption process.

AB - The cementless Corail stem is one of the most frequently implanted stems and has undergone several design changes. Currently in use is the third generation, named Corail AMT. Until now, only one third-generation Corail stem neck fracture has been described in 2020. In our paper, we present an almost identical complication with an additional analysis of the fracture using a scanning electron microscope. The revision surgery consisted of changing the broken implant with a Corail revision stem, along with replacing the polyethylene liner and the femoral head with new one, after which the patient achieved a full recovery. According to the available literature, this is the second case of this extremely rare complication.

AB - Two azo dye ligands, bearing different substituents (chlorine atom or methoxy group) in the para-position of the phenyl ring, were employed for the synthesis of two Cu(II) chelates. Full structural affirmation of complexes was assessed. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the coordination geometry for Cu atoms in both complexes is square-pyramidal with a ligand:metal ratio of 2:1 where dyes behave as monobasic bidentate ligands. Thermogravimetric analyses of the complexes and their starting dyes were performed to study their thermal stabilities and decomposition behavior confirming the thermal stability of both dyes and complexes. Antioxidative activity of the complexes has been assigned and compared with their parent ligands revealing that the presence of the electron–donor, methoxy group, in the phenyl ring, in both dye and complex, is responsible for the activity (IC50 values of 1.54 for the dye and 1.30 mM for the complex). It should be stated that the complexation of the methoxy-substituted dye leads to enhanced antioxidative activity concurrent to a standard antioxidant molecule of ascorbic acid, making this molecule a promising antioxidant agent. Docking study with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and Aurora kinase A proteins indicate that complexes exhibit higher binding affinities to proteins than the starting ligand dyes. The most promising structure exhibiting the best docking potential toward both proteins is the complex-bearing methoxy group. The presented results represent a promising start for further investigations of these compounds as potential therapeutic candidates for the treatment of various types of cancer.

The presented results represent a promising start for further investigations of these compounds as potential therapeutic candidates for the treatment of various types of cancer.",

AB - Two new subterranean leiodid taxa of the genus Spelaeobates Müller, 1901 from three pits in northern Dalmatia (Croatia), S. coriniensis sp. nov. and S. coriniensis nonveilleri ssp. nov., are described. The morphological traits of the new taxa are enumerated and illustrated. These two taxa are placed in the subgenus Spelaeobates Müller, 1901. The relationships of these two taxa and their close relatives are clarified. Data on the sexual dimorphism of the two new taxa and on the intrasubspecific variability of S. coriniensis nonveilleri ssp. nov. are presented. We also redescribed S. novaki, the type species of both the genus Spelaeobates and the subgenus Spelaeobates and the closest relative of the newly described species. A key for identification of the taxa of the genus Spelaeobates is included. The new taxa are endemic to the Dinaric Alps of Croatia. Spelaeobates (Pretneriella) kraussi Müller, 1903 and S. (P.) pharensis langhofferi Müller, 1931 were found for the first time outside their type locality.

utureno je da dolazi do korozije Cu-TiO,-CdS pri pH=3. Korozija je znacajno smanjena

pri pH=6, ali je i fotokatalitieka efikasnost bila manja.
AB - Photocatalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI) were synthesized by depositing CdS and/or Cu nanoparticles on TiO,. Cu-TiO, was synthesized by the reduction of Cu?" ions with oak leaf extract in the presence of TiO,, and Cu-TiO.-CdS by the reaction of cadmium acetate and thiourea in the presence of Cu-TiO,, The reduction of Cr(VI was tested under simulated visible irradiation, at pH-3 or pH-6. DRS has shown that the photocatalysts absorb in the visible part of the spectrum. Cu-TiO,-CdS showed two absorption edges, one for TiO, and the other for CdS. The Cu-TiO, sample had a narrower band gap than TiO, and additional absorption in the visible region. Both photocatalysts, especially Cu-TiO.-CdS" showed significantly higher efficiency than pure TiO,. Based on determining the content of Cd** ions in the solution and examining the possibility of reusing photocatalysts, it was determined that Cu-TiO,-CdS corrosion occurs at pH=3. Corrosion was significantly reduced at pH-6, but the photocatalytic efficiency was also lower.

AB - A potential visible light photocatalyst, metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has
attracted great attention as a green photocatalyst due to its simple preparation, high stability,
low cost and medium band gap of about 2,7 eV. Nevertheless, high recombination rate of
electrons and holes and small specific surface area limit its practical application. To improve
certain properties and use the good ones of g-C3N4, different types of modifications have
been used including doping, deposition or sensitization with various ions, noble metals,
semiconductors or other materials. In this work, g-C3N4 was produced from urea by simple
pyrolysis process and was modified by depositing TiO2 and/or carbon quantum dots (CQD)
in order to form heterojunctions, including so-called "Z" scheme. CQDs were deposited by
decomposition of citric acid in hydrothermal conditions (samples CQD-C3N4 and CQDC3N4-TiO2)) and TiO2 by modified sol-gel method (samples C3N4-TiO2 and CQD-C3N4- TiO2). The properties of the obtained photocatalysts were studied by FESEM, FTIR, BET
and DRS analysis. Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) was tested at a constant initial solution
concentration (10 mg/l), at pH=3 or pH=6, under the simulated visible irradiation. The
concentration of Cr(VI) after irradiation was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Obtained
results showed that the modified photocatalysts provided significantly higher photocatalytic
efficiency under the visible light compared to pure g-C3N4.

AB - Ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotic is extensively used in daily life and can be detected in municipal and pharmaceutical wastewaters, as well as natural waters. In this study, natural mineral sepiolite (SEP), SEP modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bromide (HDAB) and SEP composites with graphene oxide (GO) were used as adsorbents for the removal of CIP from aqueous solutions. The composites were prepared at a mass ratio SEP to GO of 2 : 1, using SEP and SEP modified by [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxy-silane (APT). Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption were used to characterize the obtained adsorbents. The adsorption of CIP was investigated at the pH value close to pH of natural waters. The concentration of CIP in aqueous solution was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. GO showed the highest adsorption capacity (~ 150 mg/g). The capacity of SEP was about 60 mg/g, while the SEP modification with HDAB has led to a decrease in the adsorption capacity (~ 35 mg/g). The composite SEP/GO showed the higher adsorption capacity (~ 110 mg/g) than the composite SEP-APT/GO (~ 40 mg/g). The capacity of the composite SEP/GO was higher than of mixture of SEP and GO, which indicated a certain degree of GO exfoliation and intecalation of sepiolie particles, as it was shown by X-ray diffraction. Equilibrium data for all adsorbents, except for HDAB modified sepiolite, fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model.

AB - Biomaterials engineering is one of the strongest research areas at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy (FTM), University of Belgrade including development of novel biomaterials for orthopaedic and dental applications. Especially, synthesis and physico-chemical characterization methods are well established resulting in variety of novel inorganic, polymer and composite biomaterials produced in different forms with controlled compositions and structures. Still, expertise in further advancement of the research results towards utilization in medical devices is lacking. The ExcellMater Horizon 2020 project aims to further advance the scientific and technological capacity of the Faculty in this area by twinning the knowledge from the three European partners, internationally leading institutions, with recognized expertise in biological characterization methods, intellectual property protection and utilization, evaluation of health technologies and regulatory aspects of medical devices. The aim of the project is also to increase visibility of scientific research and enhance collaboration of engineers at FTM with life scientists, medical doctors and pharmacists as well as with industry. Here, we will present some of the novel bioceramic and composite biomaterials developed at FTM aimed for potential applications in orthopaedics, dentistry, bone tissue engineering, and cancer research.

AB - Dicalcium phosphate (DP) materials, of which brushite and monetite were the most known, have
been intensively studied for several decades because of excellent resorptive and osteoconductive
properties that can satisfy the requirements needed for various medical applications, such as bone
cements, coatings of metallic implants and bone grafts [1,2]. Brushite and monetite are the dihydrated (CaHPO4·2H2O) and anhydrous (CaHPO4) forms of DPs, respectively, which showed much
better resorption due to higher solubility in comparison to the hydroxyapatite (HAp) and tricalcium
phosphate (TCP) [2].
In this study, the effect of different post-synthesis treatments on composition and morphology of four
brushite/monetite powders, were analyzed. All the powders have been prepared by modified
precipitation method described previously [3] with molar ratio of starting reagents (NH4)2HPO4 and
Ca(NO3)2·4H2O being 7:10. After filtering, powder I was obtained by drying the precipitate at 105
°C for 4 h, while powder II was obtained by precipitate freezing at ‒10 °C for 72 h, followed by
drying at room temperature for 72 h. By drying the precipitate at 110 °C for 24 h and 105 °C for 3 h,
powders III and IV were obtained, respectively. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) revealed that all
the powders are two-phase systems consisting of brushite and monetite: 98.8 mas.% brushite and 1.2
mas.% of monetite in I, 97.7 mas.% brushite and 2.3 mas.% of monetite in II, 66.7 mas.% brushite
and 33.3 mas.% of monetite in III and 45.9 mas.% brushite and 54.1 mas.% of monetite in IV. Field
Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM, Figure 1) showed that particles of prepared
materials form the agglomerates in the form of triangular plates. In addition, materials were analyzed
for their spectral, thermal and textural properties.

AB - During last decades, layered double hydroxides ([MII1−xMIIIx(OH)2]x+(A−)x/n·yH2O, LDHs) have been used in catalysis, ceramics as well as in removal of anionic pollutants. Due to their excellent anion exchange capacity, good biocompatibility and low toxicity, the nanoparticles of LDHs showed an excellent potential as drug carriers. Nifuroxazide (C12H9N3O5, NFX) is a broad-spectrum antibacterial drug, poorly soluble in water. Towards to increase the solubility of NFX, Zn-Al-LDH/NFX composite has been prepared by precipitation method at room temperture. Zn-Al-LDH, NFX and the obtained composite were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method. Characterization of the raw materials and the obtained composite confirmed the intercalation of NFX in Zn-Al-LDH. The in vitro study of drug release in simulated stomach acid and intestinal fluid showed constant release of NFX from Zn-Al-LDH during 24 h, confirming Zn-Al-LDH is a promising drug carrier.

AB - The increasing interest for nanosized mixed metal oxides such as spinels and
spinel-based materials in last decades has been motivated by their wide applications
in photocatalysis, magnetism or solar cells [1]. So far, those materials have been
obtained by conventional ceramic routes that involved high temperature treatments
of precursors like mixed nitrates, carbonates or hydroxides [1]. An approach based
on thermal degradation of metal-organic coordination compounds has been found as
a promising for the preparation of fine-dispersed spinel and spinel-based oxides,
mostly because of the control over stoichiometry as well as the possibility to obtain
the materials with the homogeneous distribution of metal ions [1].
As a continuation of our research relating to the design and synthesis of metal–
organic coordination compounds with the aim of obtaining possibly new functional
materials [2], herein we present the synthesis and characterization of new Mn(II)–
dipyridylamine coordination compound with tetraanion of 1,2,4,5-
benzenetetracarboxylic (pyromellitic) acid. The complex was used as a single-source
precursor for the preparation of nanosized Mn2O3/Mn3O4, Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 by
direct thermolysis in air atmosphere at 450, 965 and 1200 °C, respectively. The main
goal of this research was to investigate the influence of decomposition temperature
of the precursor on stoichiometry of the resulting nanocrystalline spinel-based
manganese oxides. The structural, morphological and spectroscopic properties of
these ceramic materials were also investigated.

AB - In recent years, thermal decomposition studies of transition metal complexes with
benzenepolycarboxylate ligands have become an area of a great importance due to the possibility of
obtaining useful metal oxides with desirable electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties [1]. As a
contrast to conventional methods for the preparation of metal oxides, such as hydrothermal or sol–

(pyromellitic, H4pyr) acid, [Mn2(dipya)2(pyr)(H2O)2], has been prepared and characterized by
elemental, spectral and microscopy analyses. Direct thermolysis of the complex up to 1200 °C in an
air atmosphere yielded spinel Mn3O4 oxide material. The obtained Mn3O4 has been characterized
for its structural, spectroscopic, morphological and optical properties. The possibilities of using this
oxide as photocatalyst or co-photocatalyst for removing textile organic dyes, as well as inorganic
pigmentary material, were also investigated and discussed.
