AB - A core-shell amino-functionalized glycidyl methacrylate magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by the suspension polymerization/surface imprinting method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry, nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption, and elemental analysis. This MIP was used as the sorbent in dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) of aniline from textile wastewater prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) measurements. Since aniline is toxic and a probable human carcinogen, its determination in water is of great significance. This is a challenging task because aniline is usually present at trace levels. The effects of different DSPME variables on the preconcentration efficiency have been studied by using the Plackett–Burman screening design of experiments (DoE) followed by response surface methodology optimization using the Box-Behnken design. Thus, DoE enabled the investigation of several variables simultaneously. Under optimized conditions, aniline was effectively and selectively separated by a small amount of the DSPME sorbent and detected in real textile wastewater samples. The method detection limit of 1 ng mL−1 was attained, with good method linearity and acceptable recovery and precision. The results showed that the studied MIP could be a reliable DSPME sorbent for efficiently analyzing trace aniline in real wastewater samples.

AB - The industrialization and urbanization expansion have increased the demand for precious and rare earth elements (REEs). In addition, environmental concerns regarding the toxic effects of heavy metals on living organisms imposed an urgent need for efficient methods for their removal from wastewaters and aqueous solutions. The most efficient technique for metal ions removal from wastewaters is adsorption due to its reversibility and high efficiency. Numerous adsorbents were mentioned as possible metal ions adsorbents in the literature. Chelating polymer ligands (CPLs) with adaptable surface chemistry, high affinity towards targeted metal ions, high capacity, fast kinetics, chemically stable, and reusable are especially attractive. This review is focused on methacrylatebased magnetic and non-magnetic porous sorbents. Special attention was devoted to amino-modified glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) copolymers. Main adsorption parameters, kinetic models, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics of the adsorption process, as well as regeneration of the polymeric sorbents were discussed.

AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylateco-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298-343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g(-1) at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful aminofunctionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer.

AB - With regard to the harmful effects of heavy metals on human health and the environment, the demand for synthesis and investigation of macromolecules with large capacity of harmful substances sorption is ever greater. Quantum-chemical methods may be applied in structural modeling, prediction, and characterization of such molecules and reactions. Sorption of metal ions (Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, and Ni2+) to triethylenetetramine-functionalized copolymer poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-teta was successfully modeled by quantum chemical calculations, at the B3LYP//6-311++G**/lanl2dz level. Optimized structures of metal complexes were used for calculation of real binding energy of metal ion within the complex (Er). Solvent and hydrolyzation effects were essential for obtaining the objective values. Solvent effect was included in Er by using the total solvation energy for reaction of formation of tetaOH complex (Es1, the first approach) or by using dehydration energy of free metal ion (Es2, the second approach). Experimental results were confirmed in our theoretical analyses (using the second approach).

AB - Polymer-based, highly porous nanocomposites with functionalized ligands attached to the core structure are extremely efficient in the detection, removal and recovery of metals through the process of sorption. Quantum-chemical models could be helpful for sorption process analyses. The sorption of Cu(II) ions by amino-functionalized chelating macroporous copolymers poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-amine and sorption selectivity of the subject copolymers, ethylenediamine (en), diethylenetriamine (dien) and triethylenetetramine (trien), were successfully modelled by quantum chemical calculations. Considering the crystal structures from CSD and experimental conditions during the formation of metal complexes, the most frequent mononuclear complexes are those with the tetradentate teta ligand, while binuclear complexes are formed when the metal ion is in large excess. Although the en-copolymer was the most effective functionalized one, higher maximum sorption capacities (Q(max)) were observed for the dien- and trien-copolymers, due to their abilities to form binuclear complexes. The enthalpy term has the greatest contribution to the total Gibbs energy change of reaction for the formation of mononuclear Cu(II) complexes (Delta G(aq)), while the solvation energy of the reaction has the greatest contribution in the formation of binuclear complexes. The results of the study indicate that small amines with the ability to form binuclear complex are the best choice for functionalization of the considered copolymer.

AB - Macroporous copolymers of poly[(glycidyl methacrylate)-co-(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)] (PGME) with various crosslinker (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) concentrations and porosity parameters and additionally functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (PGME-HD) were tested as potential Cr(VI) oxyanion sorbents from aqueous solutions. Kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption was investigated in the temperature range 298-343 K and the results were fitted to chemical reaction and particle diffusion models. The Cr(VI) sorption obeys the pseudo-second-order model with definite influence of pore diffusion. A temperature rise promotes chromium removal, with a maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.21 mmol g(-1) at 343 K for the sample with the highest amino group concentration. Equilibrium data were analysed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters, i.e. Gibbs free energy (G(0)), enthalpy (H-0) and entropy change (S-0) and activation energy of sorption (E-a), were calculated. The Cr(VI) adsorption onto PGME-HD was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increased randomness in the system. Desorption experiments show that chromium anion sorption was reversible and the PGME-HD sample GMA 60 HD was easily regenerated with 0.1 mol L-1 NaOH up to 90% recovery in the fourth sorption/desorption cycle. In the fifth cycle, a substantial sorption loss of 37% was observed.

AB - Magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) samples with different magnetite content were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylene triamine. Samples were characterized by elemental analysis, mercury porosimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The selected amino-functionalized sample was tested as a potential sorbent for the Mo(VI) and Re(VII) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, ionic strength and possible interfering of cations and anions was investigated. Equilibrium data were analyzed with Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm models. Sorption studies were carried out in a batch competitive experiments, in the pH range 1-8, at 298 K. Obtained results indicate that 92% of Re(VII) and 98% of Mo(VI) were sorbed at pH 2.

AB - A novel method combining a traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution was used to prepare asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles incorporating glycidyl methacrylate copolymer. In order to introduce sulfonic groups, the epoxide rings of glycidyl methacrylate were opened using two methods. The first method was functionalization with sodium sulfite, and the second was functionalization with sulfuric acid and then grafting with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The obtained membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, conductometric titration and water permeability measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to investigate the surface morphology and topology of the membranes. Dynamic adsorption of rhodamine B as a model dye was used to demonstrate the suitability of these novel membranes for membrane adsorption since the adsorption capacity for dye cations was much better for the membranes functionalized with sodium sulfite and the membranes grafted with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid compared to the non-functionalized membranes.

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.

AB - Asymmetric polyethersulfone membranes with submicron particles comprising crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a traditional liquid phase inversion process for making membranes with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. Scanning electron microscope images of the membrane cross-section revealed a hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the porous polyethersulfone support. Permeation of toluidine blue solutions through non-functionalized membranes showed a dramatic effect of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid concentration in the casting solution on the dynamic adsorption performance. The epoxide groups present in glycidyl methacrylate copolymer were transformed into amine functionalities by ring opening under alkaline conditions. Permeation of dilute Cu2+ solutions through functionalized membranes demonstrated that the plate height for some of these membranes was an order of magnitude smaller than for commercial particle-filled membranes used in solid phase extraction.

AB - Polyethersulfone membranes with integrated negatively-charged hydrogel of crosslinked poly (acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) were prepared by a combination of a liquid phase inversion process with photopolymerization and crosslinking of functional monomers included in the casting solution. A designed experiment was conducted to select the optimal composition for preparing membranes with a sufficient degree of swelling and ion exchange capacity. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed an ultrafine hybrid structure with an interconnected network of submicron particles embedded within the microporous polyethersulfone support. An intramembrane diffusion model was used to describe kinetics of heavy metal sorption by these hydrogels and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficients were 2-3 times larger than in commercial ion-exchange resins. Equilibrium sorption of heavy metals was described using a semi-empirical Langmuir model.

AB - Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution was applied to determine the thermodynamic interactions of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and the composite of biphasic calcium phosphate and PLLA (BCP/PLLA). The specific retention volumes, , of 11 organic compounds of different chemical nature and polarity (non-polar, donor or acceptor) were determined in the temperature range of 308-378 K for PLLA and 308-398 K for BCP/PLLA. The weight fraction activity coefficients of test sorbates, , and the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, , were estimated and discussed in terms of interactions of the sorbates with PLLA and BCP/PLLA. Also, the partial molar free energy, , the partial molar heat of mixing, , the sorption molar free energy, , the sorption enthalpy, , and the sorption entropy, , were analyzed. A different chromatographic behavior of the two investigated samples, PLLA and BCP/PLLA, was observed. The values of indicated n-alkanes, diethyl ether, tetrahydrofurane (THF), cyclohexane, benzene, dioxane (except for 338 K), and ethyl acetate (EtAc) (except for 338 K) as non-solvents, and chloroform (CHCl3) as good solvent (except for 378 K) for PLLA. For BCP/PLLA, CHCl3, EtAc (for 378 K), dioxane (except for 378 K), and THF were indicated as good solvents.

AB - The main causes of efficiency loss in thermal power plants are boiler tube failures that diminish unit reliability and availability, and raise the cost of the electric energy. For that reason, the regular examination of boiler tubes is indispensable measure for prevention of future malfunctions of power units. The microscopic examination of economizer's inner wall microstructure, the analysis of chemical composition of deposit using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) have been performed in a subcritical power plant. Stress corrosion cracking, pitting corrosion, destroyed protective magnetite layer, presence of magnetite and hematite in deposit and corrosive impurities within the cracks have indicated the effect of inadequate quality of feedwater that cannot entirely ensure reliable operation of the boiler. It may be stated that maintenance of present boiler does not provide its reliable operation. The extensive chemical control of water/steam cycle was recommended.

It may be stated that maintenance of present boiler does not provide its reliable operation. The extensive chemical control of water/steam cycle was recommended.",

AB - Hydrogels containing strong acid groups have been used in the past for the removal of heavy metals. Unfortunately such hydrogels exhibit poor mechanical properties and are generally difficult to handle. In this work we prepared asymmetric membranes incorporatingcross-linked 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) hydrogel by combining photopolymerization and liquid phase inversion. An experimental design measuring water content and ion-exchange capacity of these membranes was used to select the optimal membrane composition for the removal of Pb2+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated fast sorption kinetics and high capacity for the investigated metals.

AB - Polyethersulfone (PES) is frequently used for high-performance ultrafiltration membranes. Functionalization of PES membranes is required to introduce new groups for specific applications, such as affinity membranes for bioseparations [1]. Functionalization methods include bulk modification of PES material, blending of PES with another material, or surface modification of PES membranes [2]. In this work a novel method for introducing functional groups in asymmetric PES membranes is presented [3]. A cast film comprising PES, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and a common solvent was exposed to UV irradiation to form a gel of crosslinked polyGMA. The gel was then immersed in a water bath to create an asymmetric membrane with crosslinked polyGMA particles, as shown in Fig. 1. A simple treatment of these membranes with diethylene triamine was used to open the epoxide rings in polyGMA particles and introduce amine functional groups. The effects of monomer concentrations on the properties and separation performance of these novel membrane adsorbers will be presented.

AB - Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are currently used in industry for the concentration of proteins and other macromolecules. Performance of UF membranes is generally limited by a trade-off between permeability and selectivity [1]. However, electrically-charged ultrafiltration membranes can provide a dramatic improvement in ultrafiltration performance [2]. Novel UF membranes were made by combining traditional immersion precipitation process for making membranes with photopolymerization of the casting solution comprising polyethersulfone, glycidyl methacrylate and other reactive monomers. Negative charges were introduced either by initially using 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid as a reactive monomer, or were later created by epoxide ring opening of crosslinked glycidyl methacrylate. As shown in Fig. 1, selectivity of these membranes significantly improved as the concentration of negatively-charged groups in the membrane increased. The effects of membrane composition on the properties and separation performance of these novel UF membranes will be presented.

AB - Prevention and minimizing corrosion processes on steam generating equipment is highly important in the thermal power industry. The maintenance of feedwater quality at a level corresponding to the standards of technological designing, followed by timely respond to the fluctuation of measured parameters, has a decisive role in corrosion prevention. In this study, the comprehensive chemical control of feedwater quality in 210 MW Thermal Power Plant (TPP) was carried out in order to evaluate its potentiality to assure reliable function of the boiler and discover possible irregularity that might be responsible for frequent boiler tube failures. Sensitive on-line and off-line analytical instruments were used for measuring key and diagnostic parameters considered to be crucial for boiler safety and performances. Obtained results provided evidences for exceeded levels of oxygen, silica, sodium, chloride, sulfate, copper, and conductivity what distinctly demonstrated necessity of feedwater control improvement. Consequently, more effective feedwater quality monitoring concept was recommended. In this paper, the explanation of presumable root causes of corrosive contaminants was given including basic directions for their maintenance in proscribed limits.

AB - Pine cones of European Black pine are utilized as a precursor for obtaining powdered activated carbon. The concentrated phosphoric acid was used as an activating agent. A detailed study of the imidacloprid adsorption onto the obtained material was conducted. In this paper, the adsorption kinetics, the conditions of establishing equilibrium, the impact of the adsorbent mass, and pH of solutions was analyzed. It was concluded that in a short period 90 % of pesticide is removed from model solutions under the applied conditions, while the removal degree is even higher for lower initial concentrations and higher adsorbent masses. It was also elucidated that this pesticide is equally well adsorbed in both acid and basic solutions.

abstract = "Pine cones of European Black pine are utilized as a precursor for obtaining powdered activated carbon.
