AB - A novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite was prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of magnetic bentonite (MB-PGME) and functionalized with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD). The obtained samples were characterized in terms of structure as well as thermal, magnetic and morphological properties. The sorption of rhenium (Re) and tungsten (W) from aqueous solution onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated considering their contact time and different initial ion concentration, giving possibility for usage of these composites as commercial sorbents. The sorption system follows the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

AB - A series of novel waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) was synthesized using alpha,omega-dihydroxypropyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2,2-bis-(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA) and triethylamine (TEA). Different DMPA/PDMS molar ratio (from 0.2 to 0.7) and fixed -NCO/-OH molar ratio of 1.7, has been applied for the synthesis of six different WBPU films, without utilization of chain extension step during the synthesis. The structure of the prepared WBPUs was examined and confirmed by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The particle size of the prepared WBPU dispersions and molecular weight of WBPU films decrease with increasing DMPA content. In order to investigate the effect of the DMPA/PDMS ratio on thermal, mechanical and morphological properties, as well as the water resistance of the prepared WBPUs, diverse experimental techniques, such as thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile tests, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle measurements have been carried out. This research has shown that the incorporation of PDMS in WBPUs led to the appearance of microphase separation and provided surface hydrophobicity, good thermal and mechanical properties, which allow application of these WBPUs as coatings for various purposes.

AB - This work was focused on the synthesis of polyurethane networks (PUNs) based on polycaprolactone (PCL) as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation and 4,4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the parts of the hard segments (HS), by a two-step solution polymerization. In order to find the best ratio between HS and SS to achieve good thermal and mechanical properties, suitable hydrophobicity and morphology of the PUNs, various experimental analyses were conducted. The obtained results revealed that features of the PUNs highly depend on the PCL content. The increase in the PCL content leads to the increase in thermal stability, hydrophobicity and appearance of the microphase separation, but on the other side, it also leads to the decrease in storage modulus in the rubbery plateau, crosslinking density and glass transition temperatures of PUNs. This work shows that features of PUNs can be easily adjusted for a specific application by careful selection of the SS and HS ratio.

AB - A series of environmentally friendly polyurethane (PU) networks based on polycaprolactone as soft segment (SS) and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester of the second pseudo generation as crosslinking agent was prepared by a two-step polymerization in solution. The chemical structure of the PU networks was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while XRD analysis revealed that these samples are amorphous. Swelling measurements, water absorption study, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical tests and scanning electron microscope revealed that, swelling behavior, hydrophobicity, thermal and mechanical features and morphology of PU networks show clear dependence on polycaprolactone content. The increase of the SS content induced appearance of the microphase separated morphology, increase of thermal stability, elongation at break, hydrophobicity and swelling ability in tetrahydrofuran and toluene, but at the same time it is responsible for the decrease of crosslinking density, glass transition temperatures, rigidity, tensile strength and Young's modulus of PU networks. Scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of PU networks show that their surface is rough, irregular, with flake-like structure, where size of flakes increases with increasing SS content. These results indicate that by choosing adequate SS content, PU coatings with diverse features based on polycaprolactone and Boltorn (R) aliphatic hyperbranched polyester can be designed for appropriate and desired application.

AB - The surface of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with in situ synthesized imine, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and octadecylamine. The modified TiO2 nanoparticles were investigated using FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, which confirmed the formation of the charge transfer complex between imine and surface of TiO2 nanoparticles by the reaction of surface Ti atoms with hydroxyl groups of a modifying agent. TiO2 nanoparticles modified with imine were further applied as a filler for the preparation of epoxy based nanocomposites. Thermal and mechanical properties of the prepared nanocomposites were examined using the dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and hardness measurements. The obtained results have shown that modified TiO2 nanoparticles have no significant influence on the glass transition temperature and that they slow down thermo-oxidative degradation of epoxy resin in the first stage and increase hardness of the crosslinked epoxy resin.

AB - Alkyd resin/TiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were prepared from short oil alkyd resin and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with in situ formed imine ligand, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine, or with three gallic acid esters. The short oil alkyd resin was synthesized from sunflower oil, phthalic anhydride, and trimethylolpropane. Unmodified and surface modified TiO2 NPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Rheological investigation revealed that prepared dispersions have higher dynamic viscosity than pure alkyd resin. Using different characterization methods it was obtained that NCs have similar thermooxidative stability as alkyd resin, lower glass transition temperature, better barrier properties, enhanced hardness, better chemical resistance, and lower adhesion to the metal, except in the case of NC prepared using TiO2 NPs surface modified with imine, which exhibited better adhesion to the metal than pure alkyd resin.

AB - Surface modification of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) with the biologically active molecule pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B-6) was found to alter the optical properties. Microstructural characterization involving transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the anatase TiO2 NPs had a narrow size distribution with an average diameter of 45 angstrom. The absorption onset of the surface-modified TiO2 samples was red-shifted by about 0.4 eV compared to the unmodified particles. The mode of binding between vitamin B-6 and the surface Ti atoms was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, the stability constant of the surface complex was found to be of the order 10(2) M-1. The experimental findings were supported by detailed quantum chemical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). Agreement was found between the experimentally measured absorption spectra of the TiO2 NPs surface-modified with vitamin B-6 and the theoretically calculated electronic excitation spectra of the corresponding model system.

AB - Unsaturated polyester resin (UPe)-based nanocomposites and fumed silica Aerosil R812S, R805 and R816, and R200 modified with phenyl terminal group, R200NPh, were prepared. UPe resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization with dipropylene glycol in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by acid, hydroxyl, and iodine values and by FTIR and NMR analysis. The microstructural analysis of the prepared nanocomposites, performed by using transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed chain-like aggregates in the polymer matrix. The presence of modified silica nanoparticles had no influence on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polyester matrix. The tensile modulus, stress at break, and hardness of cured products increased with increasing silica content. The impact strength of cured samples was not influenced by the silica content.

AB - Influences of the vinyl modified nanosilica Aerosil (R) 380, i.e., vinyl and methacryloyl silane coupling agent and linseed oil fatty acids (BD) reactive residues, on the mechanical properties of the unsaturated polyester resins (UPes) based nanocomposites, was studied. The polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) depolymerization with propylene glycol, with and without separation of ethylene glycol, yields UPe1 and UPe2 resin, respectively. The hydroxyl terminated PET depolymerization products (glycolyzates) and UPes were characterized by acid and hydroxyl values, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magneti resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed domains of aggregates in the polymer matrix. An increase from 195 to 247% of stress at break (sigma(b)), and from 109 to 131% of impact strength (sigma(i)) of UPes based nanocomposites was obtained for 1 wt% addition of vinyl modified silica. Flexural strength (sigma(f)) increase from 106 to 156% for both UPes based nanocomposites with 1 wt% addition of BD modified silica. Cross-linking density (nu), storage modulus (G'), tan delta and T-g of the nanocomposite were determined from the dynamic mechanical testing and discussed in relation to the structure of silica modification.

AB - Novel TiO2-PANI core-shell nanocomposite, prepared by in situ oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with vitamin B6, was used to reinforce epoxy resin. The size of prepared TiO2 nanoparticles and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite were determined by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and UV-vis spectroscopy, while the morphology of PANI and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of TiO2-PANI nanocomposite on glass transition temperature, dielectric and dynamic mechanical properties, thermooxidative stability, mechanical and anticorrosion properties of epoxy based nanocomposites was investigated and compared to the properties of epoxy/PANI nanocomposites. It has been observed that the glass transition temperature of epoxy resin increases after introduction of PANI and TiO2-PANI nanocomposite, as well as with increasing their content. Prepared nanocomposites exhibited higher value of dielectric constant than pure epoxy resin. Epoxy based coating containing TiO2-PANI nanocomposite showed lower dielectric loss, higher hardness and better anticorrosion properties than pure epoxy resin and epoxy/PANI nanocomposite.

AB - The synthetic procedures for preparation of free-standing and attached to polymer support surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with absorption extended into the visible spectral region due to charge transfer complex formation were developed. The one-step synthesis of colloids consisting of surface-modified TiO2 NPs is based on the reaction between titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and lauryl galatte in nonprotic organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran, xylol, chloroform). The poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) copolymer decorated with surface-modified TiO2 NPs was obtained in two steps. First, copolymer was functionalized with dopamine and then treated with TTIP in organic solvent at slightly elevated temperature. Thorough microstructural and optical characterization of free-standing and attached to polymer support surface-modified TiO2 NPs was performed involving transmission electron microscopy as well as absorption and reflection spectroscopy. Infrared spectroscopy was used to understand coordination of ligands to surface Ti atoms. Photoredox chemistry of surface-modified TiO2 NPs attached to the polymer support was tested. Enhanced photooxidative ability of composite was demonstrated by degradation of organic dye crystal violet under visible light illumination, i.e., using photons with energy smaller than 2.75 eV. On the other hand, photocatalytic hydrogen production was used to demonstrate photoreduction ability of surface modified TiO2 NPs attached to the polymer support.

AB - The glycolytic recycling of waste PET presents a challenge for the production of secondary value-added products, such as alkyd resins. A way to overcome the unsatisfactory mechanical, drying and chemical resistance properties of alkyds obtained from difunctional glycolyzates was proposed. Waste PET was glycolyzed using multifunctional alcohols: glycerol (G), trimethylolethane (TME), trimethylolpropane (TMP) and pentaerythritol (PE), giving tetra-and hexa-functional glycolyzates and, for comparison, using diethylene glycol (DEG), propylene glycol (PG) and dipropylene glycol (DPG) giving di-functional glycolyzates. The obtained glycolyzates were examined by H-1 and C-13 NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis and further used in the synthesis of alkyd resins. The properties of the prepared alkyd resins (acid, hydroxyl and iodine values, color, average molar masses and molar mass distributions, viscosity, drying time, hardness, flexibility, gloss, adhesion and chemical resistance) were investigated with respect to the functionality and the structure of the used glycolyzates. Alkyd resins derived from multifunctional glycolyzates (TME and TMP) showed considerably enhanced properties compared to those produced from difunctional glycolyzates and also to conventional general purpose resins.

AB - Novel soy alkyd-based nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared using TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with different gallates, and for the first time with imine obtained from 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine (DHBAOA). Unmodified and surface modified anatase TiO2 NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, while the amount of adsorbed ligands was calculated from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results. Surface modification of TiO2 NPs was confirmed by FTIR and UV-Vis spectra. The influence of the TiO2 surface modification on the dispersion of TiO2 NPs in alkyd resin, thermal, barrier and mechanical properties and chemical resistance of alkyd resin/TiO2 NC coatings was investigated. The obtained results revealed that glass transition temperature of all investigated NCs is lower than for pure resin, that the presence of TiO2 NPs surface modified with gallates had no significant influence on the thermooxidative stability of alkyd resin, while TiO2-DHBAOA NPs slightly improved alkyd resin thermooxidative stability. Also, the presence of surface modified TiO2 NPs improved barrier properties, increased stress and strain at break and hardness and chemical resistance and decreased modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of alkyd resin.

AB - TiO2 nanoparticles, obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide, were surface modified by three gallic acid esters with different hydrophobic part length: octyl, decyl and lauryl gallate, and then used to prepare TiO2/epoxy nanocomposites. The characterization of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles was performed by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The influence of different gallic acid esters and content of modified TiO2 nanoparticles on the glass transition temperature (Tg), rheological, barrier and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated by DSC, DMA, water vapor permeability test and König pendulum. The presence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused the increase of Tg and decrease of the water vapor permeability. However, the length of the nonpolar gallate part showed no effect on Tg of the synthesized nanocomposites, while the increase of the nanofiller content resulted in the increase of Tg. With increasing the hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand, the water vapor transmission rate decreased, while the hardness of the nanocomposites did not change.
Prisustvo površinski modifikovanih TiO2 nanočestica u epoksidnoj smoli dovodi do povećanja temperature ostakljivanja i smanjenja propustljivosti vodene pare u poređenju sa čistom epoksidnom smolom.

Three gallic acid esters, having different hydrophobic part, were used for surface modification of the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles: propyl, hexyl and lauryl gallate. The gallate chemisorption onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, while the amount of surface-bonded gallates was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as the length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, on glass transition temperature, barrier, dielectric and anticorrosive properties of epoxy resin was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, water vapor transmission test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements. Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused increase of glass transition temperature and decrease of the water vapor permeability of epoxy resin. The water vapor transmission rate of epoxy/TiO2 nanocomposites was reduced with increasing hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand. Dielectric constant of examined nanocomposites was influenced by gallate used for the modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites have better anticorrosive properties than pure epoxy resin, because the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles react as oxygen scavengers, which inhibit steel corrosion by cathodic mechanism.

AB - Polystyrene, one of the most important material in the modern plastic industry and one of the major synthetic polymer in use today, offers an extremely broad range of applications, due to its good physical properties and low-cost. Significant change of mechanical, rheological, thermal, optical, fire retardancy and barrier properties of polystyrene has been obtained by its combination with different nanoparticles. Due to the extremely high interface area between nanoparticles and polystyrene, some new properties could also be generated, which are often necessary to provide in order to meet current and future demands for various significant applications in different fields. In this review, recent advances on nanocomposites based on polystyrene and different kinds of nanoparticles will be presented through the results obtained by authors of this chapter and results given in other literature reports. This chapter reviews the current understanding of polystyrene based nanocomposites with three particular topics: (i) the preparation conditions of nanoparticles for their efficient, homogeneous incorporation in polystyrene matrix, (ii) different approaches for the synthesis of nanocomposites based on polystyrene and (iii) the influence of the type, size and shape of incorporated nanoparticles on the properties of the polystyrene based nanocomposites. The potential applications of these nanocomposites are also highlighted.

AB - Nanocomposites (NCs) with different content of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embeded in polystyrene (PS) matrix were prepared by in situ bulk radical polymerization. The nearly monodisperse Ag NPs protected with oleylamine were synthesized via organic solvo-thermal method and further used as a filler. The as-prepared spherical Ag NPs with diameter of 7.0 +/- 1.5 nm were well dispersed in the PS matrix. The structural properties of the resulting Ag/PS NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, while optical properties were characterized using optical absorption measurements. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements showed that the presence of Ag NPs stabilized with oleylamine has no influence on the molecular weight and polydispersity of the PS matrix. The influence of silver content on the thermal properties of Ag/PS NCs was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results indicated that resistance of PS to thermal degradation was improved upon incorporation of Ag NPs. The Ag/PS NCs have lower glass transition temperatures than net PS because loosely packed oleylamine molecules at the interface caused the increase of free volume and chain segments mobility near the surface of Ag NPs.

AB - Composites based on unsaturated polyester (UPe) resins and fumed silica AEROSIL® RY 50, NY 50, RX 50 and NAX 50, as well as graphite, TiO2 or organically modified clay CLOISITE 30B were prepared in order to investigate the influence of reinforcing agents on the mechanical properties of composites. Unsaturated polyester resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with dipropylene glycol (UPe1 resin) and triethylene glycol (UPe2 resin) in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, acid and hydroxyl values, and their mechanical properties were also examined. Significant increase of the tensile modulus, tensile strength and decrease of the elongation at break was observed for composites prepared after addition of 10 wt.% of graphite or 10 wt.% of TiO2 to the UPe resins, indicating strong interaction between matrix and filler particles. On the other hand, nanocomposites prepared using UPe2 and hydrophobically modified silica nanoparticles showed lower tensile strength and tensile modulus than polymer matrix. The presence of CLOISITE 30B had no significant influence on the mechanical properties of UPe1, while tensile strength and tensile modulus of UPe2 increased after adding 10 wt.% of clay.

AB - Spherical TiO2 particles of different size were dispersed in alkyd resin based on soybean oil. Four samples of TiO2 particles were used, three commercial and one obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide. The size of the synthesized nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was performed with propyl gallate and lauryl gallate. The influence of the size of TiO2 nanoparticles, their concentration and type of the surface modification on the rheological properties of alkyd resin was investigated. The obtained results have shown that the viscosity of the prepared dispersions was higher than the viscosity of the pure resin, increases with decreasing particle diameter and decreases with frequency increase. Surface modified particles showed higher influence on the viscosity of alkyd resin than unmodified, because their hydrodynamic volume is higher due to the presence of the adsorbed gallates, leading to the increase of effective volume fraction of particles in dispersion. For the lowest TiO2 concentration, the viscosity was higher for the sample modified with lauryl gallate, due to the higher thickness of the adsorbed layer. The increase of concentration, because of less dispersion stability of the particles modified with propyl gallate, leads to particle agglomeration. The presence of agglomerates, which was confirmed by a change in the slope of the functional dependence of storage modulus on loss modulus, leads to a rapid increase in viscosity.

AB - Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles into polystyrene (PS) matrix was achieved by in situ bulk radical polymerization of styrene. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four amphiphilic esters of the gallic acid (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate), which have different lengths of hydrophobic alkyl chain (C8C16). FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements confirmed the formation of a charge transfer complex between surface Ti atoms and gallic esters. Microstructural characterization of the synthesized nanocomposites revealed that the best dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles in PS was achieved when the TiO2 surface was modified with octyl gallate. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles by different alkyl gallates does not have an influence on the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PS matrix. On the other hand, thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of PS were significantly improved by incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles. The most pronounced improvement of thermal and thermo-oxidative stability was observed for TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with octyl gallate. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013.

The problem of environmental and economic feasibility of biopolymers based on renewable raw materials and their competitiveness with polymers based on fossil raw materials is discussed. Also pointed out are the problems that appear due to the increasing use of agricultural land for the production of raw materials for the chemical industry and energy, instead for the production of food for humans and animals. The optimistic assessments of experts considering the development perspectives of biopolymers based on renewable raw materials in the next ten years have also been pointed out. At the end of the paper, the success of a team of researchers gathered around the experts from the company Bayer is indicated. They were the first in the world to develop a catalyst by which they managed to effectively activate CO- and incorporate it into polyols, used for the synthesis of polyurethanes in semi-industrial scale. By applying this process, for the first time a pollutant will be used as a basic raw material for the synthesis of organic compounds, which will have significant consequences on the development of the chemical industry, and therefore the production of polymers.

AB - This paper gives an overview of the production and application of polymer materials based on renewable raw materials * biopolymers. It is pointed out that, investment of resources in the study of renewable raw materials in the last twenty years has led to the improvement of old and development of completely new chemical and biochemical processes for using biomass for the production of low molecular weight chemical substances, and especially for the production of biopolymers, which are biodegradable and compostable, and biopolymers which are nonbiodegradable. In the same period, producers of polymers based on fossil raw materials have also developed biopolymers that are biodegradable and some of them compostable and, most important, compatible with biopolymers based on renewable raw materials. The facts considering the state of biopolymers based on renewable raw materials on the market, and prediction of production increase over the next five years are also stated. Additionally, the main renewable raw materials and the biopolymers made from them that are already present in the world market are briefly listed. A short review of biopolymers based on cellulose from wood and annual plants is also given.

AB - Hyperbranched polymers represent intriguing class of dendritic polymers, which show remarkable, unique and different chemical and physical properties compared to their linear counterparts, as a result of their complex, three-dimensional structure, presence of a large number of end functional groups and low degree of entanglement. Partial or complete chemical modification of end functional groups can be utilized to improve compatibility with other compounds and to enhance or tailor performances of hyperbranched polymers in order to adjust them for some specific application requirements. The knowledge and understanding of rheological properties of hyperbranched polymers is of great practical importance and therefore this chapter reviews rheological behavior of different hyperbranched polymers using recent investigations presented in the open literature. This review is focused on a discussion of a key factors that show an influence on the rheological properties of hyperbranched polymers, such as nature of the polymer backbone, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, type and number of end functional groups, etc.

AB - Nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by in situ radical polymerization of MMA in solution. The surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was modified with four gallic acid esters (octyl, decyl, lauryl and cetyl gallate). The content of gallates present on the surface of TiO2, was calculated from the TGA results. The influence of length of hydrophobic tail of amphiphilic alkyl gallates on dispersability of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in PMMA matrix, the molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA, as well as the thermal stability of the prepared PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites in nitrogen and air was investigated. The influence of content of TiO2 nanoparticles on the properties of these nanocomposites was also examined. The formation of a charge transfer complex between the surface Ti atoms and the gallates was confirmed by FTIR and LIN/spectroscopy. TEM micrographs of the PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites revealed that degree of TiO2 aggregation can be significantly lowered by increasing the length of aliphatic part of the used gallates. The molecular weight of PMMA slightly decreases with the increase of TiO2 content, indicating that used TiO2 nanoparticles act as radical scavengers during the polymerization of MMA. The presence of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles do not have an influence on the mobility of PMMA chain segments leading to the same values of glass transition temperature for all investigated samples. Thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of the PMMA matrix are improved by introducing TiO2 nanoparticles modified with gallates.

AB - A series of novel polyurethane crosslinked structures (PUs) was prepared from α,ω-dihydroxy-(ethylene oxide-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ethylene oxide) (EO-PDMS-EO), 4,4'-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and Boltorn ® hyperbranched polyester of the third pseudo generation. The hydroxyfunctional hyperbranched aliphatic polyester with 26 end groups was used as a crosslinking agent. In order to improve the compatibility of all the reactants during the synthesis, the PU samples were prepared by two-stage, step-growth polymerization in solution. The content of the soft EO-PDMS-EO segments was varied in the range from 15 to 40 wt. %. The influence of the EO-PDMS-EO content on the swelling behavior, crosslink density, hardness, and the thermal and surface properties of the synthesized PUs was investigated. The structure of the synthesized polyurethanes was confirmed by the presence of specific bands in the Fourier transform infrared spectra. Swelling studies were performed to determine the crosslink density and polyurethane networks with lower EO-PDMS-EO contents had higher crosslink densities. The glass transition temperature of the synthesized PUs, determined by differential scanning calorimetry, slightly increased from 50 to 58°C on decreasing the EO-PDMS-EO content because of the higher crosslink density of the samples. Increasing the EO-PDMS-EO content led to better thermal stability, as was evidenced by the onset temperature of weight loss. The surface of the polyurethane networks became more hydrophobic with increasing EO-PDMS-EO content. The surface morphology of synthesized polyurethanes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.

The surface morphology of synthesized polyurethanes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy., U ovom radu prikazana je sinteza, struktura i neka svojstva novih umreženih poliuretana pripremljenih polazeći od α,ω-dihidroksi-(etilenoksid-poli(dimetilsiloksan)-etilenoksid) pretpolimera (EO-PDMS-EO), 4,4'-metilendifenildiizocijanata i Boltorn® hiperrazgranatog poliestra treće pseudo-generacije.
