AB - In this study, the sorption of cadmium ions onto sepiolite modified with hydrated iron(III) oxide, Fe(III)-sepiolite, has been investigated in natural seawater, artificial seawater, aqueous solution of NaCl of the same ionic strength as the seawater and distilled water. The sorption experiments were performed as a function of the initial solution pH value, initial metal concentration, and equilibration time, using the batch method. The equilibrium sorption data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips isotherm models and the kinetics of sorption was analyzed using the pseudo-first-order and the pseudosecond-order kinetic models. The maximum sorption capacity and the strength of the sorbate-sorbent bonds at initial pH 7 were found to decrease in the following order: distilled water gt NaCl solution gt artificial seawater gt natural seawater. The values of parameter nS in the Sips model, which fitted the equilibrium sorption results best, showed that heterogeneity of the sorbent surface was the highest in distilled water and the lowest in natural seawater. The sorption kinetic data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which suggests that the rate-limiting step in Cd2+ sorption onto Fe(III)-sepiolite could be chemisorption. The low desorption percentage in both distilled water and 0.001 M HNO3 indicated that sorption occurred mainly by chemisorption mechanisms.

The sorption was found to be time, concentration and pH dependent. The sorption capacity at the initial pH 7 decreased in the following order: distilled water gt NaCl solution gt artificial seawater gt natural seawater. The isotherm study showed that Langmuir isotherm model could be adequately applied for the sorption in distilled water, indicating the homogeneous monolayer coverage at Fe(III)-zeolite surface, while the Freundlich isotherm model showed a better fit than the Langmuir model of the sorption data in saline waters, indicating multilayer heterogeneous coverage at the sorbent surface. The values of Freundlich parameter n suggested that the sorption was a favorable process and bonds between Cd2+ and Fe(III)-zeolite surface were stronger in NaCl solution than in natural and artificial seawater. Kinetics analysis showed that the mechanism of Cd2+ sorption from natural seawater differed from the sorption mechanism out of distilled water, NaCl solution and artificial seawater. The intra-particle diffusion kinetic model indicated that both boundary layer diffusion and intra-particle diffusion influenced the rate of sorption.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of using corona pre-treated polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric as a support for immobilization of colloidal TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles in order to remove dye C.I. Acid Orange 7 from aqueous solution. Dye removal efficiency by sonocatalysis, photocatalysis and sonophotocatalysis was evaluated on corona pre-treated fabric loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles, corona pre-treated fabric double loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles and corona pre-treated fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles before and after deposition of Ag nanoparticles. In addition, the stability of PP non-woven fabric during these processes was investigated. The substrates were characterized by SEM, EDX and AAS analyses. The change of the dye concentration was evaluated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. Unlike sonocatalysis and photocatalysis, complete dye removal from both solution and non-woven fabric was obtained already after 240-270 min of sonophotocatalysis. Corona pre-treated PP non-woven fabric loaded with Ag nanoparticles prior to deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles provided excellent degradation efficiency and superior reusability. Sonophotocatalytic degradation of dye in the presence of all investigated samples was the most prominent in acidic conditions. Although this nanocomposite system ensured fast discoloration of dye solution, TOC values of water measured after sonophotocatalysis were not satisfactory because of PP degradation. Therefore, it is suggested to include TOC evaluation in each case study where different supports for TiO2 nanoparticles are used since these nanoparticles may guarantee the dye removal from solution but the stability of support could be problematic causing even more serious environmental impact.

AB - This paper discusses the possibility of immobilization of TiO2 nanoparticles onto recycled wool-based nonwoven material, which can be utilized for removal of dyes from wastewater. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on the nonwoven material was evaluated in the aqueous solution of direct dye C.I. Direct Blue 78 under the UV illumination. Nonwoven material modified with TiO2 nanoparticles provides complete removal of dye from the solution already after 4-6h of UV illumination. However, photodegradation of the dye adsorbed on the nonwoven material was obtained within 24h of UV illumination. The rate of dye adsorption and photodegradation depends on the amount of deposited TiO2 nanoparticles. The increase of initial dye concentration induced decrease in photocatalytic efficiency of immobilized TiO2 nanoparticles. The highest photodegradation rate was achieved in acidic conditions. Elevated temperatures positively affected the removal of dye from solution. Photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on nonwoven material was preserved after three photodegradation cycles.

AB - The efficiency of iron-functionalized sepiolite for the removal of Co2+ ions from aqueous solutions was determined under different experimental conditions, using the batch method. The ionization constants of the surface functional groups of the sepiolite-iron system, determined from potentiometric titration data, were pK(a1)(int) = 6.7 +/- 0.1 and pK(a2)(int) = 10.2 +/- 0.1. The sorption experiments were performed as a function of initial metal concentration, initial pH value, and the equilibration time. The equilibrium process was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The pseudo-second order kinetic model provides the best correlation of the experimental kinetic data. The iron-sepiolite system had a noticeably higher Co2+ sorption capacity than the natural sepiolite sample as a result of higher specific sorption and a higher ion exchange capacity.

AB - Natural and acid-activated sepiolite samples were functionalized with (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. By X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis it was shown that functionalization of sepiolites by grafting silane reagents occurs mainly on the surface, whereby their crystalline structure remained unchanged. The efficiency of the adsorbents in Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions follows the order: functionalized acid-activated sepiolite gt functionalized natural sepiolite gt acid-activated sepiolite gt natural sepiolite. As the number of silanol groups on the sepiolite surface increased during the acid activation, the silane functionalization increased and this led to an increase in Cr(VI) adsorption. The adsorption capacity strongly depended on the pH of the solution from which the adsorption occurred. Maximum Cr(VI) removal was ca. 8.0 mg Cr(VI) per g of functionalized acid-activated sepiolite at initial pH 3, when the pH of solution reached 4.7, and ca. 2.7 mg Cr(VI) per g of functionalized natural sepiolite at initial pH 2, when the pH of the solution reached 2.5. Cr(VI) removal by the functionalized sepiolites was mainly attributed to electrostatic attraction between the protonated mercapto groups and the negatively charged Cr(VI) species. The sorption isotherms showed that Cr(VI) removal by both functionalized sepiolites for all initial investigated solution pH values is well described using the Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The thermodynamic data suggest spontaneity of the major physical adsorption process at 298 K.

AB - This study is aimed to highlight the possibility of engineering the multifunctional textile nanocomposite material based on the polyester (PES) fabric modified with colloidal Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The effects of concentration of NPs as well as the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading on antimicrobial, UV protective, and photocatalytic properties of PES fabrics were examined. The antimicrobial activity of differently modified PES fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, and fungus Candida albicans. The concentration of Ag colloid and the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading considerably affected the antimicrobial efficiency of PES fabrics. The fabrics provided maximum UV protection upon surface modification with Ag and TiO2 NPs. Ag NPs enhanced Ag NPs enhanced the photodegradation activity of TiO2 NPs and total photodegradation of methylene blue was achieved after 24 hr of UV illumination.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of engineering the multifunctional textile nanocomposite material based on the polyester (PES) fabric modified with colloidal Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Namely, encouraging results on the effects of TiO2 and Ag NPs separately applied to textile materials in our previous studies were the basis for an assumption that combined treatment with Ag and TiO2 NPs may bring multifunctional textile nanocomposite materials with desirable UV protective and antimicrobial effects. The antimicrobial activity of differently modified PES fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli, Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus and fungus C. albicans. The efficiency of UV blocking was evaluated by determining the UV protection factor (UPF) of PES fabrics. The effect of Ag NPs on the photoactivity of TiO2 NPs deposited onto the PES fabrics was tested by degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under UV illumination. The total content of Ag and Ti in the PES fabrics was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The morphology of PES fibers was followed by SEM.

The order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading affects the antimicrobial efficiency of PES fabrics. The fabrics provide maximum UV protection independently of the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading. Ag NPs positively influenced the photodegradation activity of TiO2 NPs and total photodegradation of methylene blue under UV illumination was achieved after 24 h.

AB - The aim of this study was to highlight the possibility of using the air RF plasma for fiber surface activation that can facilitate the deposition of silver nanoparticles from colloid onto the polyester fabrics and thus, enhance their antibacterial properties. The deposition of silver nanoparticles caused significant morphological changes as well as the color change of polyester fabrics. Untreated polyester fabrics and polyester fabrics activated by air RF plasma, both, subsequently modified by silver nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. However, polyester fabrics activated by plasma provided better laundering durability of achieved effects.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the antimicrobial efficiency and color changes of cotton fabrics loaded with colloidal silver nanoparticles which were synthesized without using any stabilizer. The influence of colloidal concentration and consequently, the amount of silver deposited onto the fabric surface, on antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and fungus Candida albicans as well as laundering durability of obtained effects were studied. Although cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles from 10 ppm colloid exhibited good antimicrobial efficiency, their poor laundering durability indicated that higher concentrated colloids (50 ppm) must be applied for obtaining long-term durability. Additionally, the influence of dyeing with C.I. Direct Red 81 on antimicrobial activity of cotton fabrics loaded with silver nanoparticles as well as the influence of their presence on the color change of dyed fabrics were evaluated. Unlike color change, the antimicrobial efficiency was not affected by the order of dyeing and loading of silver nanoparticles.

AB - Elemental composition of Echinacea purpurea (Asteracae), grown in Serbia under strongly controlled conditions, has been studied. To distinguish elemental patterns of different parts of the plant, the content of Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, Ca, Mg, Sr, Ni, and Li in root versus upper plant parts were determined, by flame atomic absorption and flame atomic emission spectrometry. Analyses of the mentioned elements in soil and in an ethanolic extract of E. purpurea were made, too. The trace element data were evaluated by multivariate methods, i.e. principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis. This revealed two groups of elements (I: Fe, Cu, Mn, Li; II: Ca, Mg, Zn, Ni), while trace element profiles of root. stem, leaves, and flowers of this plant differed significantly. However, no significant difference in the trace element patterns between the summer and the autumn harvest samples was found.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the sorption properties of recycled wool based non-woven material for heavy metal ions. To improve sorption properties wool material was treated with air low-temperature plasma (LTP) and/or biopolymer chitosan (CHT). The rate and extent of uptake of various metal cations (Pb+2, Cu+2, Zn+2) by wool, kinetics of adsorption, as well as the influence of concentration, pH and temperature on the sorption process were determined. It was found that wool even as a recycled material efficiently binds metal cations in all investigated cases. Recycled non-woven wool material is good sorbent for Pb+2 ions and it seems that it does not need any modification to improve this property. The modification of the material with LTP and/or CHT does not pass over 5 % of metal uptake improvement. Sorption properties for Cu+2 Ions improve about 10 % with LTP+CHT modification of the sorbent material, but metal salt solution still contains considerable amount of residual metal in solution (>30 %) even alter 24 hours of adsorption. The improvement in Zn+2 ions sorption is the most obvious with sorbent material modification as the LTP+CHT modified wool adsorbs 84 % more Zn+2 Ions than unmodified sorbent after 24 hours. The percentage of Zn+2 ions remaining in the solution is still considerable, but it improves from 72 % to 48 %. The further improvement in lead and copper sorption properties could be obtained by increasing pH and temperature of metal salt solution. The results indicate that the investigated non-woven recycled wool based sorbent material is potentially useful low-cost substrate for removing heavy metals from industrial effluents and other water sources.

abstract = "The aim of this study was to investigate the sorption properties of recycled wool based non-woven material for heavy metal ions. The results indicate that the investigated non-woven recycled wool based sorbent material is potentially useful low-cost substrate for removing heavy metals from industrial effluents and other water sources.",
