AB - In recent decades, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been used for the prediction of concentration of air pollutants in urban areas. Beside meteorological variables, periodic parameters, such as hour of the day or month of the year, have been frequently used to improve the performance of ANN models by representing variations of emission sources. In this paper, different forms of periodic parameters, i.e. smoothed cosines based approximation and normalized historical mean values, were combined with meteorological variables in order to analyze the sensitivity of the ANN model to them. Ward neural network and general regression neural network were used and compared for the prediction of daily average concentrations of SO2 and NOx in Belgrade, Serbia. Multiple performance metrics have demonstrated that models based on periodic parameters outperform the corresponding models that used only meteorological variables as inputs. Also, a newly proposed normalized historical mean MOYnmv (month of the year) proved to be more appropriate in majority of cases than the traditional cosines based approximation (MOYcos). A simple rule for the selection of the most efficient MOY form was defined depending on their mutual correlation (r). Results have shown that if MOYnmv is correlated with MOYcos with r gt 0.8, then ANN models what uses MOYnmv provide more accurate predictions.

AB - Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the possible application of recycled wool-based nonwoven material (RWNM) for removal of different dyes that are used in textile dye houses. Design/methodology/approach - The sorption kinetics, the influence of initial dye concentration, pH and temperature are analyzed. Basic, reactive, direct and metal complex dyes are studied. Findings - The sorption properties are highly influenced by the type of the dye owing to differences in their chemical structure and thus, the mechanism of binding to wool. Modification of material with chitosan and hydrogen peroxide improves the sorption capacities and sorption rates but no general trend can be established. Consequently, the sorption behaviour is analyzed separately for each type of the dye. Originality/value - The results indicate that RWNM can be used as an efficient, low-cost Sorbent for decolorisation of effluents.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the potential use of recycled wool-based nonwoven material for removal of basic dyes C.I. Basic Yellow 28 and C.I. Basic Red 46 from aqueous solutions, To improve the sorption properties, the recycled wool-based nonwoven material was treated with hydrogen peroxide. The sorption capacity, the sorption kinetics, and the influence of initial dye concentration and pH on the sorption were studied. The acute toxicity of dyes was evaluated using a ToxAlert (R) 100 biological test, which is based on inhibition of the bioluminescence of Vibrio fischeri. The percent of inhibition (%I) before and after the sorption, 50% effective concentration (EC50) and toxicity units (TU) were determined. The results indicated that recycled wool-based nonwoven material can be used as an efficient sorbent for removal of investigated basic dyes. Hydrogen peroxide treatment considerably improved the sorption properties of the material for both dyes. The sorption kinetics of dyes on the hydrogen peroxide treated material obeyed pseudo-second order kinetic model. The Freundlich sorption isotherm was found to represent well the experimental sorption data. The increase of initial dye concentration and pH positively affected the sorption of basic dyes. An ion exchange mechanism of dye sorption was confirmed by desorption studies. The toxicity decreased after the sorption of both dyes.

AB - The aim of this study was to highlight the potential use of recycled wool-based nonwoven material for the removal of diesel fuel, crude, base, vegetable and motor oil from water. Sorption capacity of the material in water and in oil without water, oil retention, sorbent reusability and buoyancy in static and dynamic conditions were investigated. The results show high sorption capacity of recycled wool for different kinds of oil. This sorbent also exhibited excellent buoyancy after 24 h of sorption as well as a good reusability since the decrease in sorption capacity did not exceed 50% of the initial value after five sorption cycles in oil without water.

Recycled wool-based material either as an untreated or modified material showed ability to bind all investigated metal cations in the following order: Pb2+ gt Cu2+ gt Zn2+ gt Co2+. Material performed good selectivity due to distinct sorption rates of studied metal cations. .

AB - The aim of this study was to highlight the potential of recycled wool-based nonwoven material for removal of crude, motor, diesel, base and vegetable oil from water. Sorption capacities of the sorbent differently treated (low-temperature plasma, biopolymer chitosan and hydrogen peroxide), oil retention, buoyancy in static and dynamic conditions as well as sorbent reusability determined. The results indicated that wool even as a recycled material showed high sorption capacity for different oils. Oil retention for untreated sorbent is excellent even after 5 minutes when the equlibrium is achieved. Untreated and CHT treated sorbent showed good buoyancy unlike LTP and H2O2 treated sorbents. Sorbent exhibited good reusability since even after five sorption cycles in oil medium without water, the decrease in sorption capacity did not exceed the 50% of initial value.

AB - An assessment of morphological properties after the modification of recycled wool-based non-woven sorbent with biopolymer chitosan and/or low-temperature plasma is of great importance for study on possible sorption mechanism for different contaminants from water medium. The results of fibre characterization using the SEM, AFM and WLSI techniques are presented in this paper. It was established that modification of sorbent material brought about changes of surface topography. Plasma treatment (LTP) caused the formation of pits and striations on the fibre surface, while chitosan (CHT) and plasma+chitosan (LTP+CHT) treatments resulted in masking the scales with biopolymer. These results are in accordance with surface roughness parameters arising from WLSI analysis.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the potential utilities of recycled wool-based nonwoven material for removal of different kinds of oil from water. Sorption capacities of the material in water, oil retention, sorbent reusability and buoyancy in static and dynamic conditions were determined. It was found that wool even as a recycled material efficiently adsorbs oil (crude oil, diesel fuel, base oil SN150, motor oil GLX SAE 15W-40, vegetable oil) showing excellent buoyancy after 24 h. Sorbent also exhibited good reusability since even after five sorption cycles in oil medium without water, the decrease in sorption capacity did not exceed the 50% of initial value.
