AB - Since additive technologies in dentistry are gradually replacing metal casting technology, it is necessary to evaluate new dental constructions intended for the development of removable partial denture frameworks. The aim of this research was to evaluate the microstructure and mechanical properties of 3D-printed, laser-melted and -sintered Co–Cr alloys, and perform a comparative study with Co–Cr castings for the same dental purposes. The experiments were divided into two groups. The first group consisted of samples produced by conventional casting of the Co–Cr alloy. The second group consisted of 3D-printed, laser-melted and -sintered specimens produced from a Co–Cr alloy powder divided into three subgroups, depending on the technological parameters chosen for manufacturing (angle, location and heat treatment). Examination of the microstructure was carried out by classical metallographic sample preparation, using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. A structural phase analysis was also performed by XRD. The mechanical properties were determined using a standard tensile test. The microstructure observation showed a dendritic character in the case of castings, while in the case of 3D-printed, laser-melted and -sintered Co–Cr alloys, the microstructure was typical for additive technologies. The XRD phase analysis confirmed the presence of Co–Cr phases (ε and γ). The results of the tensile test showed remarkably higher yield and tensile strength values and slightly lower elongation of the 3D-printed, laser-melted and -sintered samples than those produced by conventional casting.

AB - This research considers a possibility of improving the impact and ballistic resistance of composite materials based on aramid fabric impregnated with poly (vinyl butyral), PVB, with the application of multi-layer inorganic nanotubes of tungsten disulfide (INT-WS2) as the reinforcement. Multi-layered nano-structures of tungsten disulfide are known by their excellent mechanical resistance, especially shock absorbing properties, which promote their use as a reinforcement in composite materials. INT-WS2 used in this research were observed using scanning electron microscope and the obtained images were analyzed in program Image Pro Plus. Before the application in the composite they were ultrasonically deagglomerated. Ballistic composites were prepared impregnating the aramid fabric with system PVB/INT-WS2 and by pressing defined number of layers under high pressure and defined temperature. Charpy impact test, ballistic shooting with two different ammunition calibers and stab resistance test with controlled knife penetration were performed on prepared composite samples, and resulted in significant improvements for samples with nano-reinforcement regarding the absorbed energy of impact, toughness and the ballistic resistance.

AB - Steel grade 14MoV6-3 is a low-carbon microalloyed steel with addition of chromium and molybdenum. This grade is designed mainly for power industry applications, withstanding operating at elevated temperatures. In this paper, mechanical properties of steel grade 14MoV6-3 and methodology of calculation of critical values of the J-integral are presented. The level of damage is determined by analyzing the virgin material of the same grade. The focus of presented investigation is on the experimental J integral determination, where critical values of the J-integral (J(IC)) are compared with the values obtained by using the finite element methods (FEM). FEM model was defined on the basis of experimental conditions and obtained numerical values should confirm our experimental results.

AB - Processing of hybrid composites represents a challenge for engineers where the aim is to establish compatibility among several materials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of different sizes and morphologies of alumina fillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite fibres based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres (UHMWPE). These fibres have an outstanding elastic modulus and they are compatible with nonpolar sequences of the poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) matrix. Compared to the fibres, inferior mechanical properties of the matrix can be improved using alumina particles. Commercial aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles, commercial whiskers and synthesized particles of Al2O3 doped with iron oxide, incorporated in different weight percentages, were used as fillers. The UHMWPE fibres were impregnated using the solution of EVA in toluene with dispersed particles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscope were used for structural examination. Tensile testing revealed increasing of modulus of elasticity and strengths of obtained hybrid composite fibres. Thermal gravimetry showed improved thermal stability up to 350 degrees C of the hybrid composite fibres with alumina particles doped with iron oxide. Results of tested samples showed that the best mechanical properties were for hybrid composite fibres with 1 wt% of iron doped alumina filler.

AB - Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, PE)/oxidized PE (ox-PE) fibers and alumina reinforcement were used in preparation of poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA)/hydrolyzed EVA (EVAOH) based composites. Different alumina particles were used: nanoparticles (n-Al2O3), whiskers (w-Al2O3), synthesized (mu-Al2O3) and the one doped with iron oxide (Fe-Al2O3). Modification of alumina with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GLYMO), without pretreatment (S) and subjected to hydrolysis (HS), produced Al2O3/S and Al2O3/HS particles. Optical microscopy was employed in determination of system compatibility. A high increase in tensile strength with 3% Fe-Al2O3/HS and n-Al2O3/HS was a result of improved Al2O3/matrix interfacial interactions in PE/EVAOH based composite.

abstract = "Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, PE)/oxidized PE (ox-PE) fibers and alumina reinforcement were used in preparation of poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA)/hydrolyzed EVA (EVAOH) based composites. A high increase in tensile strength with 3% Fe-Al2O3/HS and n-Al2O3/HS was a result of improved Al2O3/matrix interfacial interactions in PE/EVAOH based composite.",

AB - In this study carbon nanotubes (CNT) and silica nanoparticles (SiO2) were added to enhance the dynamic mechanical and anti-stabbing properties of the polyurethaneip-aramid multiaxial fabric (Kolon fabric) composites for ballistic protection. The SiO2 were modified (mSiO(2)) and CNT were oxidised (o-CNT) in order to fabricate o-CNT/mSiO(2) hybrid nanoparticles. Various kinds of nanoreinforcement particles were added into poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution. The results revealed that the films PVB/oMWCNT/mSiO(2) and PVB/o-SWCNT/mSiO(2) yielded 101% and 141% improvement in indentation hardness together with 89% and 117% improvement in reduced elastic modulus, respectively, compared to the neat PVB film. The experiments demonstrated that the Kolon/PVB/o-SWCNT/mSiO(2) fabric sample yielded 35% improvement in absorbed energy and 50% improvement in the storage modulus compared to the Kolon/PVB sample.

AB - In this paper, changes in the mechanical properties of Pd-5Ni alloy are analysed after recrystallisation annealing in order to determine the optimal conditions for a thermomechanical processing regime for this alloy. The temperature and annealing time were varied and the resulting changes in hardness, tensile strength, relative elongation and proof strength were monitored. By using the simplex-lattice method and analysing experimental data, a fourth degree mathematical model-regression polynomial was defined and isolines of changes in the mechanical properties of the investigated alloys were designed depending on the conditions of heat treatment after rolling.

AB - The effect of different thermo-mechanical processing parameters on the baking response, and intergranular corrosion (IGC) resistance of an Al-4.6 wt% Mg-0.54 wt% Cu alloy was investigated. It has been shown that the high temperature anneal at 530 degrees C resulted in superior baking response of pre-deformed material after short annealing at 140-180 degrees C, compared to the annealing at 280 degrees C. Specimens predeformed 2% had positive baking response for both initial annealing temperatures, however, pre-deformation of 5% induced softening during the baking treatment of the specimens annealed at 280 degrees C. Prior to sensitization of 7 days at 100 degrees C, specimens at all stages of thermo-mechanical treatment were IGC resistant. After the sensitization specimens that underwent annealing at 530 degrees C remained IGC resistant, but specimens that underwent annealing at 280 degrees C became IGC susceptible. Better corrosion properties and baking response are related to the higher Cu content in solid solution after annealing at 530 degrees C than at 280 degrees C.

AB - This study investigates a wide range of clinically relevant mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base materials modified with di-methyl itaconate (DMI) and di-n-butyl itaconate (DBI) in order to compare them to a commercial PMMA denture base material. The commercial denture base formulation was modified with DMI and DBI by replacing up to 10 wt% of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer. The specimens were prepared by standard bath curing process. The influence of the itaconate content on hardness, impact strength, tensile, and thermal and dynamic mechanical properties was investigated. It is found that the addition of di-n-alkyl itaconates gives homogenous blends that show decreased glass transition temperature, as well as decrease in storage modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and impact fracture resistance with increase in the itaconate content. The mean values of surface hardness show no significant change with the addition of itaconates. The magnitude of the measured values indicates that the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base material modified with itaconates could be developed into a less toxic, more environmentally and patient friendly product than commercial pure PMMA denture base material.

AB - The aim of this work is to analyse the process of friction stir welding (FSW) of 3 mm thick aluminium plates made of high strength aluminium alloy - 2024 T3, as well as to assess the mechanical properties of the produced joints. Friction Stir Welding is a modern procedure which enables joining of similar and dissimilar materials in the solid state, by the combined action of heat and mechanical work. This paper presents an analysis of the experimental results obtained by testing the butt welded joints. Tensile strength of the produced joints is assessed, as well as the distribution of hardness, micro-and macrostructure through the joints (in the base material, nugget, heat affected zone and thermo-mechanically affected zone). Different combinations of the tool rotation speed and the welding speed are used, and the dependence of the properties of the joints on these parameters of welding technology is determined.

AB - This paper presents the results of the laser cleaning effects on textile samples with corroded metallic threads. In many museum collections, there are textile exhibits like uniforms, national costumes, flags and home textile, embroidered with metallic threads. Corrosion of metal threads is one of the most common problems that damage embroidered items. In the practice, the application of conventional cleaning methods rarely gives the expected results, and the implementation of laser technology was the next step for corrosion products cleaning. The Nd: YAG laser was used to clean the corrosion of embroidered items from a museum study collection. The effects on the laser irradiated zones were investigated by optical and SEM microscopy and the EDX analysis. The laser irradiation process parameters of the metal threads corrosion.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish the deformation behavior of two vanadium microalloyed medium carbon steels with different contents of carbon and titanium by tensile testing at 77 K. Samples were reheated at 1250°C for 30 min and continuously cooled in still air. Beside acicular ferrite as the dominant morphology in both microstructures, the steel with lower content of carbon and negligible amount of titanium contains considerable fraction of grain boundary ferrite and pearlite. It was found that Ti-free steel exhibits a higher strain hardening rate and significantly lower elongation at 77 K than the fully acicular ferrite steel. The difference in tensile behavior at 77 K of the two steels has been associated with the influence of the pearlite, together with higher dislocation density of acicular ferrite.

AB - This article presents research on the influence of a coupling agent -methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MEMO) and cross-linking agent dicumyl peroxide (DCP) on thermal and nanomechanical properties of neat and waste polyethylene (WPE) as well as their blend. Modification of nanosilica by silanization was performed under supercritical conditions of carbon dioxide-ethanol mixture. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indentation as well as scratch testing at nanoscale were employed for characterization of the polymer matrix with unmodified and modified nano-SiO2 particles. Low amounts of the peroxide and silanized nano-SiO2 particles in the composite formulation significantly improved thermal and tribo-mechanical behavior at nanoscale. POLYM. AB - In the process of testing teal components exposed to elevated temperature, it is hot possible to neglect Cracks. The most significant cracks can be induced by welding, which is applied for joining of Structural components. Pressure equipment in service is also exposed to high pressure and high stresses. Materials for their manufacturing are designed to resist high stress at elevated temperature, and to meet requirements regarding creep resistance. The objective of this study is to investigate microstructure of different regions of the heat affected zone in T/P91 steels by using thermal simulation instead of welding.

AB - This study investigated the effect of shape, size, and surface modification of hydroxyapatite (HAP) fillers on the degree of conversion (DC) and mechanical properties of a model BisGMA/TEGDMA composite initially and after 4 weeks of storage. Ten percent of conventional glass fillers were replaced by HAP spheres (Sph), silicon-doped spheres (Sph(Si)), whiskers (Wh), silicon-doped whiskers (Wh(Si)), and nanosized HAP particles (Nano). Spheres were specifically structured agglomerates consisting of a central void and radially orientated primary particles, whereas whiskers were compact monocrystals. DC, Vickers hardness (HV), flexural strength (Fs), flexural modulus (Ef), compressive strength (Cs), and compressive modulus (Ec) were tested. There were no significant differences in the DC between all tested groups. HV decreased by 5.4-17% with the addition of HAP, while Fs increased by 13.9-29% except in Nano group (decrease by 13%). After storage, Sph and Sph(Si) groups showed similar HV, Ef, Cs and Ec and higher Fs than the control. The fracture mode of HAP spheres was through the central void whereas whiskers showed longitudinal delamination, transverse, and mixed fractures. HAP spheres with or without silicon- doping have a potential to be part of the filler content of dental composites.

AB - New forms of hybrid multiaxial nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical and stab resisting properties are presented. This study is motivated by the lack of knowledge in the study of the multiaxial fabric nanocomposites with two modified thermoplastic matrices for antiballistic protection. Introduction of 5 wt.% silica nanoparticles in the composite of polyurethane/p-aramid/poly (vinyl butyral) leads to significant improvement in mechanical properties, and the addition of silane as a coupling agents and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agents yielded maximal values of storage modulus, tensile modulus and anti-stabbing properties for hybrid nanocomposites. Ballistic resistance testing and penetration depth of the hybrid nanocomposites were visualized using image analysis.

AB - The objective of this study was the determination of the influence of alkaline and acidic solutions on the impact properties of glass-polyester composite pipes. First, the impact test was performed on virgin samples (without the influence of any liquid) to obtain knowledge about the original material properties. Subsequently, the specimens were soaked in water and in alkaline and acidic solutions: sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid. The specimens were left in each liquid for 3, 10, 30, and 60 days at room temperature. The impact toughness and the crack initiation and propagation energies were recorded for all samples. A comparison of the results was made based on the pH values of the aggressive media, as well as based on the original impact properties and number of days of treatment. This way, the service life of pipes for transport of theexamined solutions could be predicted. POLYM. COMPOS., 2012.

AB - The subject of this study was the application of local approach to ductile fracture in order to estimate the integrity of damaged seam casing pipes for oil and gas drilling rigs. The experimental testing included tensile testing of specimens and a pressure test of a pipe with different levels of damage simulated by machined notches. In exploitation, such structures (i.e., pipes with local thin areas) can fail by the ductile fracture mechanism or by plastic collapse in the ligament. However, the majority of the procedures for determining their integrity are based on limit loads, i.e., plastic collapse criteria. In this work, a pipe subjected to internal pressure was modelled using the finite element method and local approach to fracture (the Complete Gurson Model - CGM), with the aim of determining damage development in the material (i.e., at the bottom of a machined defect) and of establishing the criteria for the maximum pressure that a damaged pipe can withstand. The results obtained using the micromechanical model are discussed and compared with several often used limit load expressions from the literature and a stress-based finite element criterion. It is shown that local approach can give appropriate results and represent failure criterion for pipes with local thin areas. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2011210]

AB - For a wide range of engineering structures such as ceramics, porous shape memory alloys, foam-like structures and thermal spray deposits, porous materials have been used. Recently, porous biocomposites for the applications to bone implants and hard tissue engineering have become increasingly important. The effect of matrix porosity on the elastic properties of particulate biocomposite was studied by two-and three-phase unit cell finite element models. A 3D FCC unit cell model of particulate composite with included matrix porosity is developed and compared with the simple theoretical models. It is found that the matrix porosity has noticeable influence on the composite elastic properties. The two-phase predictions overestimate the three-phase ones because of the physical threshold for three-phase model determined by the particle content.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish the influence of initial state of base metal on properties of mma welded 14MoV 6 3 steel. Three combinations of specimens were welded: (i) virgin-virgin (N-N); (ii) used-used (S-S); (iii) virgin-used (N-S). Used specimens were 52000 hours in exploitation. It has been established that the fracture is initiated in the zone of used part. It is assumed that the critical conditions were achieved as the consequence of creep induced grain growth and particle coarsening. On the other hand, testing of unused specimens revealed the highest level of strength.

AB - Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Local Mechanical Properties of Globe Valve Housing One of the most widely used industrial valves is globe valve. Due to wide industrial application, the valve is subjected to various types of loads - static, dynamic, thermal etc. which causes valve housing failures. Based on previous experiences and research, valve housing failure is expected in the areas of high stress concentration, such as high geometrical discontinuity. This paper is focused to investigate the possibility to analyze local strain fields of geometrically complex globe valve housing subjected to internal pressure using non-contact 3D optical deformation analysis in order to verify numerical model. Experimental system consists of cameras for 3D displacement and strain analysis and software Aramis. Using the Finite Element Method (FEM), numerical model subjected to different loads was analyzed. It is found that the predictions from the model agree well with experimental results as the result differences between two methods in the area of the highest strain values vary 30 % and in the spherical and cylindrical parts result variation is 14.8 %. Experimental and numerical results demonstrate that the experimental method is adequate for solving geometrically complex problems and determining local mechanical properties.

abstract = "Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Local Mechanical Properties of Globe Valve Housing One of the most widely used industrial valves is globe valve. Experimental and numerical results demonstrate that the experimental method is adequate for solving geometrically complex problems and determining local mechanical properties.",

AB - The objective of this study is determination of the effect of mechanical heterogeneity on ductile crack initiation and propagation in weldments using micromechanical approach. Welded single-edge notched bend (SENB) specimens were experimentally and numerically analysed. Material properties of welded joint zones were estimated using a combined experimental and numerical procedure; strains on a smooth tensile specimen were determined using ARAMIS stereometric measuring system in order to obtain true stress - true strain curves. High-strength low-alloyed steel was used as base metal, in quenched and tempered condition. J-R curves and crack growth initiation values of fracture mechanics parameter were experimentally and numerically obtained for specimens with a pre-crack in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal (WM). The complete Gurson model (CGM) was used in prediction of J-R curves and crack growth initiation. It is shown that the resistance to crack initiation and growth can be predicted using micromechanical analysis, and that the results are significantly affected by mechanical heterogeneity of the weldment.

AB - Alumina based refractories are usually used in metallurgical furnaces and their thermal shock resistance is of great importance. In order to improve thermal shock resistance and mechanical properties of alumina based refractories short ceramic fibers were added to the material. SEM technique was used to compare the microstructure of specimens and the observed images gave the porosity and morphological characteristics of pores in the specimens. Standard compression test was used to determine the modulus of elasticity and compression strength. Results obtained from thermal shock testing and mechanical properties measurements were used to establish regression models that correlated specimen properties to process parameters.
