AB - Two medium-carbon microalloyed steels with a predominant acicular ferrite microstructure were investigated in this study in order to determine the initial micro-crack formation mechanism and the role of acicular ferrite structure in cleavage fracture. In order to ensure cleavage fracture, samples were investigated at −196 °C for uniaxial tension and four point bending fracture. Previous investigations have shown that cleavage fracture for steels with a predominant acicular ferrite microstructure has not been initiated by the fracture of coarse TiN particles as in ferrite-pearlite, bainite, or martensitic microalloyed steels. The average maximal thickness of cementite plates measured in this work is 0.798 µm and 0.966 µm, for V and TiV steel, respectively. The corresponding stress values required for their fracture according to Griffith’s equation are 1970 MPa and 1791 MPa, respectively. Estimated values of the effective surface energy for the V steel with an average cementite volume fraction of 3.8% range from 40 Jm−2 to 86 Jm−2, and for the TiV steel with an average cementite volume fraction of 18.3% range from 55 Jm−2 to 82 Jm−2. The fracture of coarse cementite plates was found to not to be responsible for the cleavage fracture initiation in case of both steels.

AB - The cementless Corail stem is one of the most frequently implanted stems and has undergone several design changes. Currently in use is the third generation, named Corail AMT. Until now, only one third-generation Corail stem neck fracture has been described in 2020. In our paper, we present an almost identical complication with an additional analysis of the fracture using a scanning electron microscope. The revision surgery consisted of changing the broken implant with a Corail revision stem, along with replacing the polyethylene liner and the femoral head with new one, after which the patient achieved a full recovery. According to the available literature, this is the second case of this extremely rare complication.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish a temperature of finish rolling stage of Nb/Ti microalloyed steel containing 0.06 wt.% C, 0.77 wt.% Mn, 0.039 wt.% Nb and 0.015 wt.% Ti, using physical simulation. Samples were subjected to laboratory simulation at a twist plastometer at high temperatures, i.e. between 825 and 950 °C. Five pass deformation and interpass times were selected in accordance with a processing parameters at five stand finishing hot strip mill. Restoration (recovery and/or recrystallization) behavior was evaluated by calculation of Fraction Softening (FS) and Area Softening Parameter (ASP) values. At 950 °C all individual pass stress-strain curves, FS and ASP show full recrystallization in all interpass intervals. On the other hand, with a decrease in temperature to the interval of 875-825 °C, the extent of restoration is decreasing, leading to recovery as a sole softening mechanism at 825 °C, which was confirmed by the stress-strain curve shape, and values of FS and ASP. It is assumed that, due to high supersaturation, strain-induced precipitation promoted pinning of grain and subgrain boundaries and suppressed recrystallization. Therefore, the critical temperature for finish rolling was estimated to be 825 °C.
AB - Cilj ovog rada je određivanje temperature završnog valjanja Nb/Ti mikrolegiranog čelika koji sadrži
0,06 % C, 0,77 % Mn, 0,039 % Nb i 0,015 % Ti.
sa sniženjem temperature do intervala 875-850°C.
dovodi do potiskivanja rekristalizacije.

AB - Cleavage fracture of the V and Ti-V microalloyed forging steels was investigated by the four-point bending testing of the notched specimens of Griffith-Owen’s type at −196◦ C, in conjunction with the finite element analysis and the fractographic examination by scanning electron microscopy. To assess the mixed microstructure consisting mostly of the acicular ferrite, alongside proeutectoid ferrite grains and pearlite, the samples were held at 1250◦ C for 30 min and subsequently cooled instill air. Cleavage fracture was initiated in the matrix under the high plastic strains near the notch root of the four-point bending specimens without the participation of the second phase particles in the process. Estimated values of the effective surface energy for the V and the Ti-V microalloyed steel of 37 Jm−2 and 74 Jm−2, respectively, and the related increase of local critical fracture stress were attributed to the increased content of the acicular ferrite. It was concluded that the observed increase of the local stress for cleavage crack propagation through the matrix was due to the increased number of the high angle boundaries, but also that the acicular ferrite affects the cleavage fracture mechanism by its characteristic stress–strain response with relatively low yield strength and considerable ductility at −196◦ C.

AB - Pattern recognition techniques are applied to various morphological descriptors to monitor the formation and propagation of surface defects of materials subjected to thermal shock. A low-cement high-alumina castable was synthesized, cured, sintered, and exposed to thermal stability testing using the water quench test. After a certain number of thermal shock cycles, photographs of the samples' surfaces were taken and subjected to image analysis. The influence of the sintering temperature on the morphology of the detected defects was studied using principal component analysis (PCA) as a pattern recognition technique that is the most informative for extracting possible differences. The morphological descriptors of the defects correspond to the previous results regarding the influence of sintering temperature on the structure of a castable during thermal shocks.

AB - Isothermal transformation characteristics of a medium carbon Ti-V microalloyed steel were investigated using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and by uniaxial compressive testing. Samples austenitized on 1100 degrees C were isothermally treated in the range from 350 to 600 degrees C and subsequently water quenched. The final microstructure of the samples held at 350 degrees C consisted of bainitic sheaves and had compressive yield strength, approximately from 1000 MPa, which is attributed to high dislocation density of low bainite. At 400 and 450 degrees C, acicular ferrite became prevalent in the microstructure. It was also formed by a displacive mechanism, but the dislocation density was lower, leading to a decrease of compressive yield strength to approximately 700 MPa. The microstructure after the heat treatment at 500 degrees C consisted of coarse non-polygonal ferrite grains separated by pearlite colonies, principally dislocation free grains, so that the compressive YS reached a minimum value of about 700 MPa. The microstructure of the samples heat-treated at 550 and 600 degrees C consisted of pearlite and both grain boundary and intragranular ferrite, alongside with some martensite. After 600 s, austenite became stable and transformed to martensite after water quenching. Therefore, the presence of martensite increased the compressive YS to approx. 800 MPa.

800 MPa.",

AB - Pattern recognition techniques are applied to various morphological descriptors to monitor the formation and propagation of surface defects of materials subjected to thermal shock. A low-cement high-alumina castable was synthesized, cured, sintered, and exposed to thermal stability testing using the water quench test. After a certain number of thermal shock cycles, photographs of the samples’ surfaces were taken and subjected to image analysis.

AB - Two modes of failure are analysed for coupling links, the mechanical connections that transmit traction forces between vehicles along the length of a train. Coupling links are designed to withstand the dynamic loads in normal operation but may break if applied loads exceed safe operating limits. Fractography of two failed links revealed that one had failed through brittle fracture, and one through ductile fracture. Metallography indicated that one sample was hardened and tempered with typical tempered martensite microstructure and the other was normalized with a ferrite-pearlite microstructure. A numerical model of a coupling link is developed and validated against experimental data. Results indicate that the failed links experienced loads above the permitted limit.

AB - Some aspects of deformation, precipitation, and recrystallization behavior in medium carbon V-microalloyed and low carbon Nb/Ti-microalloyed steels are presented in the paper. Changes in microstructure are explained together with methods of quantification. The temperature of No-recrystallization (Tnr) is defined as a milestone to show the onset of retardation of recrystallization while the apparent activation energy for hot working shows the extent of this retardation. In the case of high cooling rates, this method is not sufficiently sensitive and Trl (recrystallization limit temperature) and Trs (recrystallization stop temperature) must be evaluated from softening data. Paper presented the possibility to estimate Tnr temperature on six stands finishing train at Hot Strip Mill in HBIS Iron and Steel Serbia, Smederevo as well as the activation energy for static recrystallization, QSRX, derived from Tnr temperatures.

AB - Medium carbon V-microalloyed steel continuously cooled from the austenitization temperature at still air, with predominantly acicular ferrite structure, has been investigated by means of four-point bending of notched Griffiths-Owens's type specimens at liquid nitrogen temperature. Local fracture stress and plastic strain were determined by using finite element analysis and fracture surface examination using scanning electron microscope. It was revealed that cleavage fracture initiation, which takes place close to the notch root in the narrow zone of high plastic strains, is not related to any broken coarse second phase particles. It was assumed that microcracks nucleate by strain induced fracture of pearlite nodules. Two effective surface energy values of 24 and 42 J/m(2) were estimated according to the Griffith's equation, indicating the influence of crystallographic orientation between neighboring grains at the origin of fracture. Lower value was attributed to fracture of coarse ferrite-pearlite units with similar crystallographic orientation and higher value to fracture propagation through fine acicular ferrite matrix.

AB - The aim of this work was to establish the deformation behavior of two vanadium microalloyed medium carbon steels with different contents of carbon and titanium by tensile testing at 77 K. Samples were reheated at 1250°C for 30 min and continuously cooled in still air. Beside acicular ferrite as the dominant morphology in both microstructures, the steel with lower content of carbon and negligible amount of titanium contains considerable fraction of grain boundary ferrite and pearlite. It was found that Ti-free steel exhibits a higher strain hardening rate and significantly lower elongation at 77 K than the fully acicular ferrite steel. The difference in tensile behavior at 77 K of the two steels has been associated with the influence of the pearlite, together with higher dislocation density of acicular ferrite.

abstract = "The aim of this work was to establish the deformation behavior of two vanadium microalloyed medium carbon steels with different contents of carbon and titanium by tensile testing at 77 K. The difference in tensile behavior at 77 K of the two steels has been associated with the influence of the pearlite, together with higher dislocation density of acicular ferrite., Čelici mikrolegirani vanadijumom i titanom razvijani su sa ciljem da zamene kaljene i otpuštene srednjeugljenične čelike. AB - The aim of this work was to determine TTT diagram of medium carbon V-N micro-alloyed steel with emphasis on the development of intragranular ferrite morphologies. The isothermal treatment was carried out at 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 600°C. These treatments were interrupted at different times in order to analyze the evolution of the microstructure. Metallographic evaluation was done using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that at high temperatures (≥ 500°C) polygonal intragranulary nucleated ferrite idiomorphs, combined with grain boundary ferrite and pearlite were produced and followed by an incomplete transformation phenomenon. At intermediate temperatures (450, 500°C) an interloced acicular ferrite (AF) microstructure is produced, and at low temperatures (400, 350°C) the sheave of parallel acicular ferrite plates, similar to bainitic sheaves but intragranularly nucleated were observed. In addition to sheaf type acicular ferrite, the grain boundary nucleated bainitic sheaves are observed.

AB - Two medium carbon vanadium microalloyed foring steels with different content of carbon and titanium were investigated. Broad goals were to examine transformational behavior of the steels on continuous cooling at still air directly from austenitisation temperatures, to determine optimal regime to produce predominantly acicular ferrite structure and to examine it both by means of mechanical behavior and fracture properties at liquid nitrogen temperature. Main goal was to establish micromehanism of cleavage fracture of the steels with predominantly acicular ferrite structure, and to measure critical parameters of cleavage fracture – critical fracture stress and effective fracture surface energy. The influence of vanadium and nitrogen on microstructure and mechanical properties of medium-carbon steels has been studied by means of metallography and mechanical testing. Vanadium addition to the low nitrogen steel suppresses the formation of ferrite-pearlite following the low reheating temperatures and microstructure consists of bainitic sheaves. For high reheating temperatures, dominantly acicular ferrite structure in both the low nitrogen and the high nitrogen vanadium steels is obtained. The results suggest that vanadium in solid solution promotes the formation of bainite, whereas the effect of nitrogen is related to the precipitation of VN particles in austenite with high potency for intragranular nucleation of acicular ferrite and to the precipitation of V(C,N) particles in ferrite with high potency for precipitation strengthening. Addition of both vanadium and nitrogen considerably increases the strength level. The aim of this work was to establish deformation behaviour of two vanadium microalloyed medium carbon steels with different contents of carbon and titanium by tensile testing at 77 K. AB - U radu su ispitivanana dva srednjeugljenična čelika za kovanje, mikrolegirana vanadijumom, koji se međusobno razlikuju po sadržaju titana i ugljenika. Određivanje kritičnog napona loma obuhvata fraktografiju i modelovanje savijanja u četiri tačke metodom konačnih elemenata.

AB - The effect of austenitizing temperature and Cr, Mo and Mn addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of V microalloyed medium carbon steel has been studied by means of metallography and mechanical testing. The addition of Cr, Mn and Mo leads to a decrease in yield strength (YS) by approximate 100 MPa in comparison to the base steel. It is assumed that Mn and Mo increase hardenability by promoting the formation of bainitic sheaves (BS), i.e. by suppressing the formation of ferrite-pearlite and acicular ferrite (FP-AF). Cr at the level used in this work is not that effective. Presence and packet size of bainitic sheaves decrease the Charpy V-notch impact energy at 20 degrees C (CVN20) in comparison to ferrite-pearlite and acicular ferrite microstructures.

AB - The influence of Cr, Mo and Mn on microstructure and mechanical properties of V-microalloyed medium-carbon steels has been studied by means of metallography and mechanical testing. Cr, Mn and Mo addition promotes the formation of bainitic sheaves suppressing the formation of ferrite-pearlite and acicular ferrite. The influence of Mn is somewhat masked by a low content of nitrogen. In a low nitrogen steel VN particles are not present and the nucleation of acicular ferrite is suppressed. The yield strength of Cr, Mo and Mn alloyed steels with bainite structures is lower in comparison to the base steel due to less pronounced precipitation strengthening effect. The presence of bainitic sheaves decreases the CVN20 impact energy in comparison to ferrite-pearlite and acicular ferrite microstructures.

AB - The influence of vanadium and nitrogen on microstructure and mechanical properties of medium-carbon steels has been studied by means of metallography and mechanical testing. Vanadium addition to the low nitrogen steel suppresses the formation of ferrite-pearlite following the low reheating temperatures and microstructure consists of bainitic sheaves. Increasing nitrogen at the same vanadium level promotes the acicular ferrite formation. For high reheating temperatures, dominantly acicular ferrite structure in both the low nitrogen and the high nitrogen vanadium steels is obtained. The results suggest that vanadium in solid solution promotes the formation of bainite. The effect of nitrogen is related to the precipitation of VN particles in austenite with high potency for intragranular nucleation of acicular ferrite and to the precipitation of V(C, N) particles in ferrite with high potency for precipitation strengthening. Addition of both vanadium and nitrogen considerably increases the strength level, while CVN(20) impact energy increases on changing the microstructure from bainitic ferrite to the fine ferrite-pearlite and acicular ferrite.

AB - The Al-Mg alloy sheets have been increasingly used for automotive and marine applications as they offer good combination of strength, formability, corrosion resistance and weldability [1-4]. High Mg containing Al-Mg alloys, with more than 3.5 wt% Mg, can achieve high strength level through solid solution and strain hardening effect, but they become susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This susceptibility is caused by Mg-rich β-phase precipitation at grain boundaries that occurs during sensitization treatment (65-180 °C) [5-8]. The degree of susceptibility to IGC and SCC attack can vary depending on the microstructure of Al-Mg alloys. It has shown [9,10] that microstructures with continuous layer of β-phase precipitates along grain boundaries are highly susceptible to IGC and SCC, while uniformly distributed β-phase particles provide good corrosion resistance. Thus, a good balance of strength and corrosion resistance can be achieved by an optimization of the microstructure development. As those high Mg containing Al-Mg alloy sheets are commonly pass through some shaping processes in automotive and shipbuilding industry, the understanding of microstructure - corrosion - formability relationships appears to be very important. Thus, the aim of this paper was to examine the effect of the microstructure developed under different thermo-mechanical treatments (TMTs) on the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking and formability of a highly alloyed Al - 6.8 wt% Mg sheets.

AB - Formability of Al-Mg6.8 alloy has been evaluated experimentally in uniaxial tension and biaxial stretching. Three different structures developed after cold rolling and annealing in the range of temperature from 265 to 320 °C: (I) recovered dual (a + β) phase, (II) recrystallized (a + β) dual phase, and (III) recrystallized a-Al single phase structure, were tested. Samples with recovered structure have shown a lower formability level than the samples with fully recrystallized structure. Formability level assessed through FLD and LDH value, has been a result of complex interaction between work hardening ability and strain rate sensitivity.

AB - Formability of Al-Mg4.5-Cu0.5 alloy sheets was tested after annealing at different temperatures (220-520 degrees C) and water quenching. The formability (normalized limiting dome heights, LDH/R) showed only a small variation for all the samples with recrystallized structure, i.e. the LDH/R-e(2) curves were within similar to 13% in the range of plane strain deformation. The samples annealed at 280 degrees C experienced a formability level at the upper limit of the band containing all the LDHIR values. The formability rating seems to be the result of the complex interaction of the strain hardening ability and strain rate sensitivity (SRS) due to different structural features developed during different annealing conditions.

AB - Aluminium alloys suitable for automotive application were reviewed briefly as well as the reasons for the future wider application of Al-Mg type alloys. Basic problems related to the limited consumption of Al-Mg type alloy sheets in automotive applications as the appearance of stretcher-strain markings and paint baking - induced softening considered. Also, the current knowledge on the promising approaches to overcome those problems was estimated.

AB - Comprehensive experimental work performed to assess the temperature and strain-rate affected deformation behaviour of commercial AlMg6 type, 1.0 mm thick annealed sheet. Elevated temperature tension test performed at temperatures ranged from 25 to 300 degreesC, and three cross-head rates, giving initial strain rates of epsilon(i) = 6.7 x 10(-4) s(-1), epsilon(2) = 6.7 x 10(-3) s(-1) and epsilon(3) = 6.7 x 10(-2) s(-1). Steady state strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) parameters were calculated (m = d ln sigma/d ln epsilon) for the strain-rate ratios of epsilon(1)/epsilon(2) (1:10), epsilon(2)/epsilon(3) (10:100). It was shown that in the tested AlMg6 alloy sheet the SRS is negative and decreasing type around the room temperature due acting the dynamic strain ageing (DSA). It becomes positive at higher temperatures when the DSA weakening. This transition temperature increases by strain rate. The monotonic increase of the SRS brought by temperature is assumed to be due the enhancement of dynamic recovery and it appeared to be independent on strain rate, except at 300 degreesC. At 300 degreesC decreasing the strain rate brings considerable increase of the SRS. The experienced increase of the terminal m values from similar to0.15 to similar to0.4 for the applied strain-rate ratios of epsilon(1)/epsilon(2) (1:10) and epsilon(2)/epsilon(3) (10:100), respectively, is assumed to be the result of changing the deformation mechanism from recovery to diffusion-controlled solute drag. However, the performed research has shown that the attained increase of the SRS was not followed With appropriate ductility improvement. Analysis of the strain localization (necking) has shown that increasing the strain rate from 6.7 x 10(-4) to 6.7 x 10(-2) s(-1), the temperature brought softening can be compensated, and the process of strain localization (necking) shifted to higher strains.
