AB - The aggregation of proteins into fibrillar, amyloid-like aggregates generally results in an improved, positive effect on various techno-functional properties within food products, such as gelation, emulsification, and foam stabilization. These highly stable structures, characterized by their repetitive, β-sheet rich motifs, may develop as the result of the thermal treatment of protein-rich food products. Heavy metal ions can influence amyloid-like aggregation of food proteins. Lead(II) and cadmium(II) represent some of the most abundant and common environmental water and food pollutants. In this work, the influence of heavy metal ions, lead and cadmium on amyloid-like aggregation of ovalbumin at high temperatures (90 °C) and under acidic conditions (pH 2.0) was investigated. Ovalbumin is used as a general model for how heavy metals can affect amyloid-like aggregation of a food protein. Structural changes were monitored via Thioflavin T and 8-Anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid fluorescence, Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, as well as computational analyses. The obtained results indicate that the added heavy metal ions bind to different sites within ovalbumin prior to thermal treatment. Lead binding sites are closer to the hydrophobic regions of an protein, while cadmium ion binding sites are more exposed. This specific binding of metal ions affects the morphologies of amyloid-like aggregates, resulting in lead-induced branching of amyloid-like fibrils, or cadmium-induced tangling of fibrils into dense amyloid clusters. This additive effect of heavy metal ions is most evident in ovalbumin samples which contain a mixture of both heavy metal ions.

AB - In this work, six groups of non-toxic compounds were tested as inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M HCl solution: glycine (Gly), glutamic acid (Glu), cysteine (Cys), a mixture of three amino acids glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine (Gly + Glu + Cys); a mixture of dipeptide composed of glycine and glutamic acid with amino acid cysteine (Gly-Glu + Cys); and a tripeptide composed of glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid which is called glutathione (Glt). The inhibition performances of inhibitor systems for steel corrosion were investigated by electrochemical tests (polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analyses (atomic force microscopy-AFM, optical microscope, and photoelectron spectroscopy-XPS). Experimental results showed that all six groups of inhibitors affect the reduction of steel corrosion rate, with Glt having the highest efficiency during 4-h immersion (97.3%). Atomic force microscopy and optical microscope showed that the inhibitors are able to protect the metal surface and reduce the extent of corrosion. The existence of the Glt inhibitory film on the steel surface was confirmed by the XPS method. DFT calculations provided useful insights into adsorption of the corrosion inhibitors.

AB - The inhibitory effect of cysteine in the presence of selected lanthanide chlorides (LaCl3, NdCl3, and CeCl3) in a neutral 0.1 M NaCl solution was analyzed. The cysteine concentration of 0.3 mM was determined as an optimal one. The resistance to general and pitting corrosion of AA7075-T6 alloy in inhibitive solutions was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The surface appearance of the aluminum alloy was determined before and after corrosion tests using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy, while the presence of an inhibitory layer on the alloy surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and atomic force microscopy. The inhibitory effect of cysteine was significantly higher in the presence of all tested lanthanide chlorides, especially to pitting corrosion. The protective ability of cysteine was increased by lanthanides in the following sequence: Ln < Nd < Ce ions. The inhibitory effect of cysteine in the presence of cerium ions was examined in more detail as cerium ions provided the highest inhibitory effect, both to general and pitting corrosion.

AB - Surface roughness is one of the influencing factors on the friction and wear mechanism of metallic materials. However, surface roughness of metallic biomaterials plays a major role in assessing the biocompatibility and adhesion of human cells of the surrounding bone tissue on the biomaterials surface. Namely, it is already known that as the surface roughness increases, contact surface with human cells increases, and thus their adhesion to the surface. In order to achieve adequate roughness and biocompatibility, it is often necessary to additionally subject the surface of the biomaterial to modification.
In the present study, nanostructured oxide coating on the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy was formed by electrochemical anodization in the 1M H3PO4 + NaF electrolyte, during 60, 90, 120 minutes. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyse the nanostructured oxide coating morphology and showed that highly ordered nanotubular oxide layers were formed by electrochemical anodization. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterise the surface topography before and after electrochemical anodization. Results showed that the surface had higher roughness after electrochemical anodization compared to initial surface of the alloy. It was also shown that increase of anodizing time induces increase of the surface roughness.

AB - Cerium-based conversion coatings have emerged as promising green alternatives to the harmful chromium-based ones, but the mechanism of corrosive protection still remains a subject of academic and industrial research. This study focuses at small scale phenomena of corrosion inhibition imparted by ceria (CeO2) to AA7075. Ceria nanoparticles were deposited from diluted and concentrated CeO2 sols by immersion. A multi-analytical approach, combining Atomic Force microscopy (AFM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed. Deposition of ceria films led to deactivation of cathodic sites, i.e. decreased Volta potential difference, resulting in increased corrosion inhibition. In situ AFM real-time monitoring revealed that during exposure to NaCl electrolyte, the changes in size of deposited ceria aggregates occurred: nanoparticles disintegrated/desorbed and re-deposited at the coating surface. The process was found to be dynamic in nature. Small particles size and inherent reactivity are believed to accelerate this phenomenon. Due to the greater CeO2 reservoir, this phenomenon was more pronounced with a thicker film, imparting longer term protection.

AB - In this study, development of folic acid-loaded liposomes using a basic amino acid, histidine as a solubilizing agent for folic acid was presented, which tackled the poor solubility of this vitamin. The effect of the liposomal membrane modifiers, cholesterol and SPAN 20 on the characteristics of the final formulations was examined. Liposomes prepared from a commercially available purified soybean lecithin (Phospholipon 90G) by proliposome method were between 503 and 877 nm in average diameter, where cholesterol induced enlargement and SPAN.20 reduction of vesicles. High encapsulation efficiency of 84% and drug loading of 0.123 mg g(-1) were achieved, irrespective to the composition. According to AFM images, folic acid-loaded liposomes of a fraction with a nano size were flattened compared to globular empty liposomes. FTIR analysis revealed possible interactions between phospholipids and histidine, while DSC study suggested interactions between folic acid and lipids during heating. Release study done by a Franz diffusion cell showed prolonged release of folic acid from liposomes and the release rate was determined by folic acid solubility.

AB - Star-shaped polymers of biodegradable aliphatic polyester, poly(epsilon-caprolactone), PCL, with different number of arms (three, four, and six) were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization initiated by multifunctional alcohols used as cores. As potential biomaterials, synthesized star-shaped poly(epsilon-caprolactone)s,sPCL, were thoroughly characterized in terms of their degradation under different pH conditions and in respect to their cytotoxicity. The in vitro degradation was performed in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and hydrochloric acid solution (pH 1.0) over 5 weeks. Degradation ofsPCL films was followed by the weight loss measurements, GPC, FTIR, and AFM analysis. While the most of the samples were stable against the abiotic hydrolysis at pH 7.4 after 5 weeks of degradation, degradation was significantly accelerated in the acidic medium. Degradation rate of polymer films was affected by the polymer architecture and molecular weight. The molecular weight profiles during the degradation revealed random chain scission of the ester bonds indicating bulk degradation mechanism of hydrolysis at pH 7.4, while acidic hydrolysis proceeded through the bulk degradation associated with surface erosion, confirmed by AFM. The in vitro toxicity tests, cytotoxicity applying normal human fibroblasts (MRC5) and embryotoxicity assessment (using zebra fish model,Danio rerio), suggested those polymeric materials as suitable for biomedical application.

AB - Biochemistry coupled with electrochemical approach is employed in a fast, relatively simple, yet highly precise detection of a plant extract antioxidant properties. Antioxidant capacity of dark red corn grains was investigated electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV) on glassy carbon electrode (GC). The linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements were performed for examining the corrosion inhibitive behavior of polyphenolics on mild steel. The consistent positive correlation (r=0.99) was established between total phenolic and flavonoid contents obtained by CV measurements and spectrophotometric antioxidant assay (DPPH test). Both analyses confirm the high antioxidant activity of tested pigments. Determination of the corrosion inhibition efficiency revealed that the red corn pigments have anti-corrosion effect on mild steels.

AB - The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the polyhedral oligo silsesquioxanes (POSS) structure on cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films. Cavitation is used as a method for estimation of adhesion quality of a composite film on a metal substrate. The hybrid composite films consist of UV cured Bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (BisGMA/TEGDMA) as matrix and reactive POSS structures as adhesion enhancers. POSS structure is established in dependence of content of hydroxyl groups and cross-linkable functionalities that affect the system compatibility. Composites are made with 1, 3, and 5 wt. % of three different types of POSS reagents containing: i) hydroxyl groups (POSS-M), ii) both hydroxyl and allyl groups (POSS-M-A), and iii) methacrylate groups (POSS-M-Cl). Morphology of composite films is examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The roughness after cavitation erosion of hybrid films with POSS-M-A determined by AFM was decreased for ~86% when compared to the polymer matrix. The loss of mass after cavitation erosion is significantly reduced by the addition of 5 wt. % of POSS particles. The best resistance to cavitation evaluated as the mass loss has a composite film with POSS-M-A particles and it exhibits ~94% lower mass loss when compared to the neat polymer matrix. Likewise, hybrid composite films with POSS-M-Cl and POSS-M particles decreased mass loss after cavitation test by
~91% and ~89%, respectively. The results indicate that improved mechanical properties and enhanced adhesion to the metal substrate contributed to improved resistance to cavitation erosion. Methods used in this study for estimation of adhesion quality and wear resistance clearly indicate that the best compatibility with BisGMA/TEGDMA matrix is achieved with POSS reagent containing both hydroxyl and allyl functional group.

abstract = "The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the polyhedral oligo silsesquioxanes (POSS) structure on cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films.
Methods used in this study for estimation of adhesion quality and wear resistance clearly indicate that the best compatibility with BisGMA/TEGDMA matrix is achieved with POSS reagent containing both hydroxyl and allyl functional group.",

AB - Low loading PtAu nanoparticles supported on high area carbon were synthesized by water-in-oil microemulsion method and examined for formic acid and methanol oxidation. Prepared catalyst powder was characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These techniques revealed that the catalyst contains rather agglomerated quasi-spherical particles, similar to 4 nm diameter, composed of a solid solution of Pt and Au with only similar to 4 at% of Au. In spite of such low Au content, both onset and peak potentials for CO oxidation are shifted some 150 mV to more positive values in comparison to Pt synthesized in the same manner due to stronger binding of CO as a result of notable electronic effect. It is important that this small quantity of Au also significantly influences oxidation of formic acid promoting direct path and suppressing indirect path in formic acid oxidation in a degree as expected by a much larger quantity of Au. Such improvement could be due exclusively by ensemble effect of high number of small Pt domains which formation could be possible only by very fine dispersion of such low Au quantity. High number of small Pt domains is corroborated by lower activity for methanol oxidation in comparison to Pt catalyst synthesized by the same procedure. These results emphasize the importance of the Au dispersion on the surface of Pt over its quantity in PtAu catalyst with regards to both, the ensemble and the electronic effects.

AB - Esomeprazole is the most effective of the proton-pump inhibitors for the acid-related diseases and at first was examined for the electroanalytical purposes. The drug standard and as a content of injection powder was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and quantitatively determined using square wave voltammetry (SWV) via its electrooxidation at Au electrode in 0.05 M NaHCO3. SWV showed a linear dependency of the anodic peak currents vs. esomeprazole standard concentrations in the range from 3.0 to 500 mu g mL(-1) with the values of limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ): 1.4 and 4.6 mu g mL(-1), respectively. Using the constructed and validated calibration curve, the values of unknown esomeprazole concentrations in injection powder and in human serum spiked with standard were determined. Before the electrochemical oxidation, it was shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM) that the small esomeprazole islands formed inside holes were visible and their diameter was about 200 nm attributed to physico-chemical characteristics of esomeprazole. After the electrochemical oxidation, the morphology of esomeprazole standard on Au surface was completely changed and composed of spherical particles in a diameter between 200 and 600 nm. With esomeprazole suspended in human serum, the process of crystallization partly occurred in the form of spherical grains with the average size of these grains was about 4 gm. The analysis at the macro level done by the optical microscopy (OM) confirmed this opinion. The study of esomeprazole degradation showed that at Au electrode, after 3 h of cycling, a neglectable amount of the esomeprazole was changed. Using IrOx electrode under directed stress conditions, its almost complete degradation was realized after 3 h confirmed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis showed that 95% of esomeprazole was mineralized. The HPLC and Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) study revealed the formation of 4-hydroxy omeprazole sulphide, 4-hydroxy omeprazole sulphone, esomeprazole sulphone and methylated esomeprazole.

AB - PtAu systems are recognized as good catalysts for the oxidation of formic acid electrooxidation, which is investigated as a possible anodic reaction in low-temperature fuel cells. In this research, bimetallic PtAu nanoparticles, supported on high area carbon Vulcan XC-72R, were synthesized by water in oil microemulsion method. The precursor reduction process took place in a single microemulsion, simultaneously, in the presence of 35% of HCl in the water phase, as a capping agent. Electrochemical behavior of the PtAu/C catalyst was investigated at as prepared electrodes by cyclic voltammetry in 0.5M H2SO4 as a supporting electrolyte, and also in the oxidation of adsorbed CO. The results were compared to the Pt/C catalyst prepared by the same synthesis procedure. PtAu/C catalyst powder was also characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Average particle diameter, of 2nm, was calculated from XRD data, which is close to the value of 2.82 nm obtained from TEM images. Compared to identically synthesized Pt nanoparticles, the bimetallic ones are significantly smaller. EDS maps of PtAu/C sample confirm the presence of both elements, and indicate a very fine distribution of Au in the sample. Elemental composition of about 20% Au and 80% Pt was also determined from these maps. Prepared catalyst was tested for formic acid electro-oxidation in terms of its activity and stability over the long term cycling. The voltammograms recorded indicate the change of reaction mechanism and better utilization of the catalyst surface in comparison to Pt/C.
Snimljeni voltamogrami ukazuju na promenu reakcionog mehanizma i bolje iskorišćenje površine katalizatora u poređenju ra Pt/C katalizatorom sintetizovanim istim postupkom.

AB - In our previous paper, we described in detail studies of Sn influence on electrocatalytic activity of PtSn catalyst for CO and formic acid oxidation (StevanoviAc et al., J. Phys. Chem. C, 118 (2014) 278-289). The catalyst was composed of a Pt phase, Pt3Sn alloy and very small SnO2 particles. Different electrochemical treatment enabled studies of PtSn/C having Sn both in surface and subsurface layers and skeleton structure of this catalyst with Sn only in subsurface layers. The results obtained revealed the promotional effect of surface Sn whether alloyed or as oxide above all in preventing accumulation of CO and blocking the surface Pt atoms. As a consequence, in formic acid oxidation, the currents are not entering the plateau but increasing constantly until reaching a maximum. It was concluded that at lower potentials the effect of Sn on formic acid oxidation was predominantly electronic but with increasing the potential bi-functional mechanism prevailed due to the leading role of SnO2. This role of SnO2 is restated in the present study. Therefore, CO and formic acid oxidation were examined at PtSnO2/C catalyst. The catalyst was synthesised by the same microwave-assisted polyol procedure. According to XRD analysis, the catalyst is composed of a Pt phase and SnO2 phase. The reactions were examined on PtSnO2/C catalyst treated on the same way as PtSn/C. Comparing the results obtained, the role of SnO2 is confirmed and at the same time the significance of alloyed Sn and its electronic effect is revealed.

AB - Glucose biosensor containing cysteine (Cys), glutaraldehyde (GA) and glucose oxidase (GOx) onto gold electrode is constructed and already electrochemically tested. Now, the electrochemical behavior of biosensor in human serum is further investigated and supported by morphological characterization of layers for the first time. The morphology and microstructure of layers was examined by Fourier transformed infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force (AFM) and optical microscopy (OM). The electrochemical indication that the Cys-GA-GOx film on Au surface is not compact and that there were some bare regions which remain catalytically active is supported by AFM and OM results. The construction and the nature of bonding of Au-Cys-GA-GOx biosensor layers is confirmed by the FTIR study.

AB - Unsaturated fatty acid (FA)-modified nanocellulose (m-NC) shows potential application in improving mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/m-NC nanocomposites (UPe/m-NC). A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m-NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross-linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox-Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross-linking capabilities on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m-NC is studied. Cross-linking density, modulus, and T-g of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification.

AB - Well adhered, homogenous coatings were obtained from deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on choline chloride and urea, at current densities up to 20 mA cm-2. The coatings' morphology was analyzed by atomic force microscopy, determining the agglomerates size and distribution. The corrosion stability of these deposits was analyzed in 3 wt. % NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements, and compared with coatings deposited from a conventional water-based electrolyte. The influence of deposition current density and surface morphology, as well as of DES type, on the corrosion resistance was analyzed. It was shown that electrodeposition from DES enables incorporation of greater Mn amounts, that induced a pseudo-passivation effect, which, in turn, resulted in superior corrosion resistance.

AB - The method to develop a stable glucose biosensor with successive attachment of cysteine (Cys), glutaraldehyde (GA) and glucose oxidase (GOx) onto gold electrode is presented. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests the diffusion control of the glucose oxidation. The obtained biosensor shows a fast electron transfer of k(0) = 20.4 s(-1), high affinity for glucose with the apparent MichaelisMenten constant K-M(app) = 1.15 mM, a low detection limit of 0.94 mM in a linear range 1.5-7 mM. This biosensor exhibits good stability and reproducibility. Good biocompatibility of modified electrode surface, which enhances the covalent bonded enzyme and consequently glucose oxidation, resulted in biosensor with excellent performances. Biosensor was tested in samples containing human serum.

AB - Short-term hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), one series of triblock (PCL/PEO/PCL) and the other of diblock (PCL/PEO) copolymers, with a low content of hydrophilic PEO segments is presented. The effect of the introduction of PEO as the central or lateral segment in the PCL chain on copolymer hydrolysis and biodegradation properties was investigated. FUR results revealed higher hydrolytic degradation susceptibility of diblock copolymers due to a higher hydrophilicity compared to PCL and triblock copolymers. Enzymatic degradation was tested using cell-free extracts of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, for two weeks by following the weight loss, changes in surface roughness, and changes in carbonyl and crystallinity index. The results confirmed that all samples underwent enzymatic degradation through surface erosion which was accompanied with a decrease in molecular weights. Diblock copolymers showed significantly higher weight loss and decrease in molecular weight in comparison to PCL itself and triblock copolymers. AFM analysis confirmed significant surface erosion and increase in RMS values. In addition, biodegradation of polymer films was tested in compost model system at 37 degrees C, where an effective degradation of block copolymers was observed.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - Two series, one of triblock (PCL/PEO/PCL) and the other of diblock (PCL/PEO) copolymers were prepared by ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone catalized with tin(II) octoate and by using dihydroxy or monohydroxy poly(ethylene oxide) as the macroinitiator. The PEO block length was fixed (M-n 1,000 g/mol) and the PCL block lengths (M-n 10,000-40,000 g/mol) were tailored by changing weight ratio of epsilon-CL/PEO. The copolymers' structure was confirmed by H-1 and quantitative C-13 NMR spectroscopy while their molecular weights were determined by GPC analysis. The thermal properties and the degree of crystallinity of the copolymers were investigated and compared by using DSC and WAXS. Both types of copolymers were semicrystalline with the orthorhombic PCL crystal lattice. The surface morphology of the copolymer films was investigated by using optical microscopy and AFM analysis, which confirmed the spherulitic lamellar structure with spherulites of different diameters. Data indicated that a low content of PEO segment had an influence on thermal degradation behavior, crystallinity and morphology of copolymers. Roughness of copolymer films was affected by the content of PEO and correlated with the spherulites' diameter. The small changes in water and moisture absorption properties of copolymers compared to homopolymer PCL were observed.
