AB - The development of European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars is a crucial part of the 70-year-long tradition of breeding work on temperate zone fruit species at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, Republic of Serbia. Since its establishment to date, 18 plum cultivars of worldwide importance have been named and released. During the evaluation of newly bred plum genotypes, particular attention has been paid to the study of their self-(in)compatibility status, which is very important both for growers and breeders. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the self-(in)compatibility status of the recently released plum cultivars ‘Divna’, ‘Lana’ and ‘Petra’. The 2‑year (2018/19) study included: assessment of in vitro pollen germination on agarose-sucrose medium, observation of pollen tube growth in vivo in pistils under self- and open-pollination modes using fluorescence microscopy and determination of fruit set. In addition, the effect of temperature on the progamic phase was evaluated. In vitro pollen germination had high values, indicating the good in vivo pollen behaviour. High values of the parameters of pollen tube growth in vivo and fruit set in both self- and open-pollination variants were obtained in ‘Divna’ and ‘Petra’. On the other hand, pollen tube growth inhibition was observed in the upper part of the styles after self-pollination of ‘Lana’. Consequently, in the base of the style and in the ovary no tubes were noticed and no fruit set was recorded. Based on the overall results, ‘Lana’ can be characterized as self-incompatible, whilst ‘Divna’ and ‘Petra’ are self-compatible plum cultivars. The influence of air temperatures on the reproductive process and fertilization success was specific to each genotype.

AB - Pollination and temperature are predominant factors affecting the progamic phase of sexual plant reproduction. In light of climate change and the emergence of increasing temperatures, new knowledge is necessary to encourage fruit breeding programmes to develop cultivars adapted to these changes, as well as to find the best incompatibility relationships with the aim of achieving high fruit quality and yield. This research was conducted to reveal the effect of pollination treatments and temperature on the progamic phase and fruit set in three European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars (‘Jojo’, ‘Hanita’ and ‘Katinka’) resistant/tolerant to Sharka virus using fluorescent microscopy. Reproductive parameters (flowering overlapping, pollen germination, number of pollen tubes in the upper part of the style and locule of the ovary, dynamics of pollen tubes growth and initial and final fruit set) were investigated in vivo under different pollination treatments (cross, open and self-pollination). The influence of different temperature regimes (20 °C, 23 °C and 26 °C) on the progamic phase was also observed under cross and self-pollination. The pollination treatments significantly influenced the number of pollen tubes in the style and ovary, as well as dynamics of pollen tubes in different regions of pistil. Pollen tubes showed better growth in different crossing combinations compared to open and self-pollination. Higher temperatures accelerated pollen tube growth and reduced the time they need to reach ovules. Generally, ‘Jojo’ appeared to be the best pollenizer among the examined cultivars, while ‘Katinka’ exhibited the best response of pollen tube growth to various temperature regimes. The differences observed between growth of the pollen tubes in each genotype-temperature combination revealed that certain crossing combinations were better adapted to higher temperatures so this can be taken into account as one of the adjustments to climate change. The ability of cultivars to respond to high temperatures in the progamic phase can also be helpful for breeding programs in developing new cultivars better adapted to different temperature conditions.

AB - A study was conducted to investigate the effect of different storage periods and temperatures on pollen viability in vitro and in vivo in plum genotypes ‘Valerija’, ‘Čačanska Lepotica’ and ‘Valjevka’. In vitro pollen viability was tested at day 0 (fresh dry pollen) and after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of storage at four different temperatures (4, −20, −80 and −196◦C), and in vivo after 12 months of storage at distinct temperatures. In vitro germination and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining methods were used to test pollen viability, while aniline blue staining was used for observing in vivo pollen tube growth. Fresh pollen germination and viability ranged from 42.35 to 63.79% (‘Valjevka’ and ‘Čačanska Lepotica’, respectively) and 54.58 to 62.15%, (‘Valjevka’ and ‘Valerija’, respectively). With storage at 4◦C, pollen viability and germination decreased over the period, with the lowest value after 12 months of storage. Pollen germination and viability for the other storage temperatures (−20, −80 and −196◦C) were higher than 30% by the end of the 12 months. Pollination using pollen stored at 4◦C showed that pollen tube growth mostly ended in the lower part of the style. With the other storage temperatures, pollen tube growth was similar, ranging between 50 and 100% of the pistils with pollen tubes penetrated into the nucellus of the ovule in the genotype ‘Čačanska Lepotica’. The results of these findings will have implications for plum pollen breeding and conservation. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

AB - Pollen grain micromorphological characterisation of four plum (Prunus domestica L.) genotypes from two different breeding programmes (Fruit Research Institute, Serbia, and Hohenheim, Germany) was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The studied characteristics were pollen size and shape, colpus length, mesocolpium width as well as exine characteristics. All genotypes had tricolpate pollen grains and striate exine ornamentation, with more parallel longitudinal ridges. The most significant differences among the analysed genotypes concerned the length of the pollen grain and exine sculpturing. The genotypes Pozna Plava', Presenta' and 'Caanska najbolja' had the largest pollen grains ( gt 57 mu m), whereas `Hanita' showed a smaller pollen size, below 54 mu m. Pozna Plava' had perprolate pollen in the equatorial view (LAW ratio 2.06), while the other three genotypes had prolate shaped pollen. By analysing the pollen morphological characteristics of the plum varieties in this paper, primarily the shape, size, length of colpi and, most importantly, the sculpture of the exine, each variety showed a specificity which can be used together with other morphological characteristics for description and characterisation.

AB - One of the most important plum (Prunus domestica L.) breeding objectives is regular and large yield which depends on the degree of self-fertility. Partially self-fertile and self-sterile genotypes require compatible pollenizers. The aim of this study was to investigate suitability of the cultivar 'Čačanska Lepotica' as a pollenizer for six promising plum genotypes (hybrids 38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87, and 22/17/87, and the cultivar 'Nada') developed at Fruit Research Institute (FRI), Čačak. Previous studies showed that the abovementioned plum genotypes were characterized by different levels of self-fertility. Also, a satisfactory overlapping in the flowering time between the pollenizer and studied genotypes was found. The investigation was conducted over two years and included pollen germination in vitro of the pollenizer cultivar, as well as quantitative parameters of pollen tube growth in vivo (the number of pollen tubes in the upper third and in the base of the style, number of pollen tubes in the ovary, the percentage of pistils with the pollen tube penetrating the nucellus of the ovule 10 days after pollination) and fruit set under cross-pollination. The same quantitative parameters of pollen tube growth in vivo and fruit set under open pollination were used for comparison. The tested cultivars had good pollen germination, ranging from 44.16% in the first year to 44.57% in the second year of study. All studied plum genotypes except hybrid 22/17/87 had higher values of quantitative parameters of pollen tube growth in vivo and fruit set in the cross-pollination variant compared to the open pollination variant. Average fruit set in the cross-pollination variant ranged from 15.42% (hybrid IV/63/81) to 32.61% ('Nada'). Based on the obtained results, the cultivar 'Čačanska Lepotica' represents a satisfactory pollenizer for hybrids IV/63/81 and 32/21/87, and a good pollenizer for hybrids 38/62/70, 34/41/87, 22/17/87, and the cultivar 'Nada'.

AB - Autochthonous cherry genotypes in the Republic of Serbia can potentially provide a rich and useful genetic variability, especially for ripening time, fruit quality and resistance to diseases. Fruit Research Institute, Čačak has a long tradition in collecting new sweet and sour cherry genotypes, as well as in evaluation and utilization of autochthonous material with good agronomic properties. This study was carried out to determine the main biological properties of six sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) genotypes (‘GT-1’, ‘GT-2’, ‘GT-3’, ‘GT-4’, ‘GT-5’, ‘GT-6’), and eight sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) genotypes (‘GV-1’, ‘GV-2’, ‘GV-3’, ‘GV-6’, ‘GV-7’, ‘GV-10’, ‘GV-12’, ‘GV-13’). Over two years (2016-2017), the following properties of in situ cherry genotypes in West Serbia region were investigated: ripening time, pomological properties (morphometric and chemical), and field resistance to causal agents of cherry diseases – cherry leaf spot (Blumeriella jaapii (Rehm.) v. Arx.), brown rot (Monilinia spp.) and cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi L.). The highest average fruit weight among investigated sweet and sour cherry genotypes was found in ‘GT-5’ (11.00 g) and ‘GV-13’ (7.64 g), respectively. The highest soluble solids content was found in ‘GT-1’ and ‘GT-3’ (16.20%) and ‘GV-7’ (17.30%), respectively. In terms of field resistance to pathogens, ‘GT-1’, ‘GV-6’ and ‘GV-10’ showed the best performance. To avoid the loss of this material, it is necessary to collect and characterize these genotypes to allow their conservation in germplasm collections, and to provide preconditions for a successful cherry breeding work.

AB - Factors such as the stage of ovule maturity and longevity at flowering, when the stigma is able to receive the pollen, are significant in terms of fruit set. Various abnormalities during ovule development can often limit pollination, effective pollination period (EPP) and fruit set. In the plum cultivar 'Pozna Plava' (Prunus domestica L.), in the ovaries of open-pollinated flowers and of emasculated unpollinated flowers, we investigated abnormalities in the tissues of primary and secondary ovules during the time of anthesis until 10 days thereafter. At the same time, the viability of the ovules of the unpollinated flowers was examined. Abnormal ovules were considered those with degenerations in the egg apparatus, inverse arrangement of egg cells, more than eight nuclei in the embryo sac as well as degeneration of the nucellus and integuments. In primary ovules, the most frequent abnormality in open-pollinated and unpollinated flowers was the degeneration of the egg apparatus, with frequencies of 14.3-50.0% and 10.0-89.0%, respectively. In the secondary ovules, in both treatments, a completely different picture was obtained. The processes that led to abnormalities in the structure of the secondary ovules first occurred in the cells of the nucellus, while the elements of the embryo sac had a relatively normal cytological organisation. However, the observed abnormalities do not explain the low fruit set of this cultivar.

AB - A newly released, late ripening plum cultivar 'Pozna Plava' sets fruit poorly, although it produces high quality fruit. This study aimed to evaluate which factors in the reproductive process could be related to the lack of fruit set. In two consecutive years, establishment of a suitable polleniser and the stage of ovule development at anthesis as well as initial and final fruit set have been studied. In addition to this, the impact made by temperature fluctuations on the interaction between male gametophytes and female sporophytes was also analysed. Growth of the pollen tubes in the style and penetration into the nucellus as well as fruit set were more effective in cross-pollination than in open and self-pollination. A relative delay in ovule development was observed, and most ovules had an embryo sac with eight nuclei. Considering the results of the quantitative parameter study of pollen tube growth in the ovary as well as the results of the stage of ovule development, a conclusion can be made that this cultivar is characterised by an extremely short effective period of pollination.

AB - The study of ovule senescence in the ovaries of four sweet cherry cultivars ('Karina, 'Kordia, 'Regina and 'Summit) in the environmental conditions of West Serbia was carried out. Monitoring of ovaries was performed using the fluorescence microscopy method, on emasculated and pollinated flowers (cross-pollination variant), non-emasculated open-pollinated flowers (open pollination variant), and emasculated unpollinated flowers (unpollinated variant). In cross- and open pollination variants, the rate of unusual pollen tube growth in the ovary, fertilization percentage and fruit set were determined. The tendency in the appearance of fluorescence, as an indicator of ovule senescence, showed strong genotypic dependence. it was the most and the least pronounced in the ovaries of 'Kordia' and 'Regina', respectively, in all the flower categories. Investigation of unusual pollen tube growth, fertilization percentage and fruit set, considered from the aspect of ovule senescence and cultivars' behaviour as female (pollinated), pointed to their specific relations and complex dependence on the air temperature before and during the flowering. Flower emasculation and pollination also influenced ovule senescence, and this impact was unequal by genotypes, i.e. those having better ovule vitality in general, had also better ovule vitality in the conditions of emasculation, and pollination absence. The results imply different adaptation of cultivars to higher temperatures before and during the flowering, pointing to the further investigation related to the good adaptability of genotypes to air temperatures in reproductive sense, which is a basic indicator of good adaptability in general.

AB - The work on the improvement of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) genotypes at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak has been under way since 1960. The major breeding goals are to develop a self-fertile genotypes with consistent yields, superior fruit quality, suitability for industrial processing and fresh consumption, as well as with different ripening time. A special attention has been paid to obtaining genotypes tolerant/resistant to cherry leaf spot (Blumeriella jaapii (Rehm.) v. Arx.) and brown rot (Monilinia laxa /Ader et Ruhl./ Honey ex Whetz.). The main method is planned hybridization within Prunus cerasus. In addition, clonal selection from natural sour cherry populations of Balkan has been applied. The paper presents results of the two-year (2013-2014) study of flowering and ripening time, morphometric properties and chemical composition of fruits, and field resistance to causal agents of economically important diseases and pests of newly-released sour cherry cultivars ['Iskra' ('Köröser Weichsel' × 'Heimanns Rubin'), 'Nevena' ('Köröser Weichsel' × 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel') and 'Sofija' ('Čačanski Rubin' × 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel')], and promising genotypes obtained by planned hybridization [II/40 ('Köröser Weichsel' × 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel' and V/106 (Köröser Weichsel' × 'Heimanns Konserven Weichsel')] or clonal selection from natural population ('G-6' and 'G-10'), in comparison to the standard cultivar ('Heimanns Konserven Weichsel'). 'Sofija' and 'G-10' should be favoured owing to their early ripening time (beginning of second decade of June), exceptional potential for fruit size (7.20 g and 6.83 g, respectively), well-balanced parameters of chemical composition of fruits, and field-resistance to causal agents of cherry diseases and pests. Due to the numerous positive biological and agronomical traits, sour cherry genotypes developed at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, deserve to be given a place in commercial orchards, as well as parents within sour cherry breeding programmes worldwide.
Arx.) i sušenje cvetova i grančica trešnje i višnje (Monilinia laxa /Ader et Ruhl./ Honey ex Whetz.).

abstract = "The work on the improvement of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) genotypes at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak has been under way since 1960. Due to the numerous positive biological and agronomical traits, sour cherry genotypes developed at Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, deserve to be given a place in commercial orchards, as well as parents within sour cherry breeding programmes worldwide., Rad na stvaranju novih genotipova višnje u Institutu za voćarstvo, Čačak, započeo je 1960. godine. Arx.) i sušenje cvetova i grančica trešnje i višnje (Monilinia laxa /Ader et Ruhl./ Honey ex Whetz.). AB - Apples and sweet cherries are generally characterized by self-incompatibility, which is controlled by the multiallelic locus S with gametophytic action. Thus the identification of S-genotype represents crucial information for fruit breeders and growers. The aim of this study was to identify the S-genotype of two apple ('Cacanska Pozna' and 'Cadel') and two sweet cherry ('Asenova Rana' and 'Carna') cultivars developed at Fruit Research Institute, Cacak using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method with consensus and allele-specific primers. The S-genotype of apple cultivars 'Cacanska Pozna' (S7S9) and 'Cadel' (S2S7) were consistent with parental combinations 'Starking Delicious' (S9S28) x 'Jonathan' (S7S9) and 'Golden Delicious' (S2S3) x 'Jonathan' (S7S9), respectively. For sweet cherry cultivars 'Asenova Rana' ['Drogans Gelbe' (S1S5) x 'Majova Rana' (S1S4)] and 'Carna' ['Majova Rana' (S1S4) x 'Bigarreau de Schrecken' (S1S3)], S3S9 and S1S4 were identified respectively, suggesting that the reported pedigree is erroneous. The trueness-to-type of DNA samples of both sweet cherry cultivars was confirmed by comparison of cultivar samples from more than one site. Upon this testing, the remaining inconsistency indicated that aforementioned parentages of the sweet cherry cultivars were incorrect. These discrepancies could be the result of possible pollen contamination, or mistakes either in breeders recording or in seed processing and seedling production. The results of S-genotyping of apple and sweet cherry cultivars provide relevant information on correct assignment of these cultivars to cross-compatibility groups, which are important for cross design in developing new cultivar, as well as for orchard management in the efficient production of fruits.

AB - The self-compatibility of six promising plum genotypes (hybrids 38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87 and 22/17/87 and cultivar 'Nada') was examined during the period 2009-2011 through quantitative evaluation of paiameters of in vivo pollen tube growth and fruit set. Mean daily temperatures were recorded during the flowering period. All genotypes showed good average in vitro pollen germination (36.34-38.63%) except the cultivar 'Nada' (25.64%). The lowest values for in vivo pollen tube growth parameters except with respect to number of pollen tubes in the upper third of the style - were found in hybrid 32/21/87 and cultivar 'Nada'. The same genotypes also had the highest numbers of incompatible pollen tubes. The average number of fruit set ranged from 1.25% (hybrid 32/21/87) to 31.08% (hybrid 34/41/87). All studied parameters depended on genotype, year and their interaction. There was a significant positive correlation between the number of fruit set and the number of pollen tubes in the base of the style. The number of pollen tubes in the ovary had a significant positive impact on percentage of pistils with pollen tube penetrating the nucellus 240 h after pollination and on number of fruit set. Based on these data hybrid 32/21/87 and cultivar 'Nada' were classed as partially self compatible and hybrids 38/62/70, IV/63/81, 34/41/87 and 22/17/87 as self-compatible.

AB - Investigation of initial and final fruit set in the 'Pozna Plava' plum cultivar characterised by a low fruit set tendency was conducted in three pollination modes (cross-, self-and open pollination), over a two-year period (2010-2011). The cross-pollination was performed using the pollen of cultivars 'Presenta', 'Hanita' and 'Cacanska Najbolja'. Pollen germination in vitro for the cultivars used in the cross-pollination was over 40%, whereas in 'Pozna Plava' it was less than 18%. In both years, the cross-pollination with 'Presenta' resulted in the highest initial (69.54 and 51.85%) and final fruit set (41.45 and 30.92%). In addition, high values of initial and final fruit set were also obtained with 'Hanita' and 'Cacanska Najbolja' as pollinizers. Self-pollination mode in both years resulted in somewhat lower initial (47.53 and 21.74%) and final fruit set (33.24 and 12.35%); and the lowest values were recorded in the open pollination mode (initial fruit set of 12.28 and 5.14%, final fruit set of 0.79 and 2.83%). The results revealed a clear impact of the pollination mode and air temperatures on the fruit set of plum cultivar 'Pozna Plava' during the first ten days from the beginning of full flowering.

AB - The study of pollen performance in vivo of four self-incompatible sweet cherry cultivars-'Karina', 'Kordia', 'Regina' and 'Summit' was performed. The results were considered in the context of climatic conditions of West Serbia, bearing in mind increased frequency of seasons with higher temperatures during the flowering. Each cultivar was used as polleniser and pollinated cultivar, and together with the open pollination variant, a total of 16 combinations were analysed during the three-year period. The effect of variability factors on pollen tube growth efficiency occurred as a common impact of polleniser, its requirement to flowering temperatures, the influence of pollinated cultivar on pollen performance, and the response of male-female relations to air temperature. 'Summit' induced the highest pollen tube number, while the pollen tube number of 'Kordia' was the lowest. Higher temperatures during the flowering have caused a decrease in the number of pollen tubes in 'Kordia' and 'Karina', and increase of their number in 'Regina' and 'Summit' as pollenisers. The genotype-dependent response of pollenisers in terms of air temperature during the flowering has not consistently manifested, and was partially modified by the influence of the pollinated cultivar. The main tendencies were more apparent in the 'borderline cases', i.e. in pollination of cultivars having diametrically opposite requirements, than in those of cultivars having similar requirements regarding the flowering temperature.

abstract = "The study of pollen performance in vivo of four self-incompatible sweet cherry cultivars-'Karina', 'Kordia', 'Regina' and 'Summit' was performed. AB - The paper presents the results of S-genotyping for sweet cherry cultivars ‘Germersdorfer’, ‘Hedelfinger’ and ‘Junska Rana’ from collections and commercial orchards in the Republic of Serbia and Romania. The use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR method) with consensus primers for the second intron and allele-specific primers enabled determination of the following S-allelic constitutions in the assessed samples: S3S4 (‘Germersdorfer’ 1), S3S12 (‘Germersdorfer’ 2-8 and ‘Hedelfinger’ 1-2) and S3S5 (‘Hedelfinger’ 3). The results of this investigation confirmed that the methods used for determination of S-genotype are very suitable for reliable and relatively rapid genotyping of sweet cherry cultivars. This is the first report of S-allelic constitution for ‘Junska Rana’ (S3S9), based on which this cultivar has been assigned to incompatibility group XVI.

AB - The paper presents results of the two-year (2014-2015) study of flowering and ripening time, morphometric properties and biochemical composition of fruits, and field resistance to economically important diseases and pests of newly-recognized sour cherry cultivars ‘Iskra’ (Köröser Weichsel × Heimanns Rubin), ‘Nevena’ (Köröser Weichsel × Heimanns Konserven Weichsel) and ‘Sofija’ (Čačanski Rubin × Heimanns Konserven Weichsel). The new cultivars have large and high quality fruits, with light red (‘Iskra’), dark red (‘Nevena’) and red (‘Sofija’) skin colour. The ripening time was in the second decade (‘Sofija’), i.e. in the third decade of June (‘Nevena’ and ‘Iskra’). The cultivars exhibited a high level of field resistance to Blumeriella jaapii (Rehm.) v. Arx. and Monilinia laxa /Ader et Ruhl./ Honey ex Whetz. Due to the numerous positive bio-economic characteristics, the newly recognized sour cherry cultivars developed at the Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, deserve to be given a place in commercial orchards, as well as in parental combinations of sour cherry breeding programmes.
AB - U radu su predstavljeni dvogodišnji rezultati (2014-2015. godina) ispitivanja fenofaza cvetanja i sazrevanja, morfometrijskih osobina i biohemijskog sastava ploda, kao i poljske otpornosti na ekonomski najznačajnije bolesti i štetočine, novopriznatih sorti višnje Iskra (Köröser Weichsel × Heimanns Rubin), Nevena (Köröser Weichsel × Heimanns Konserven Weichsel) i Sofija (Čačanski Rubin × Heimanns Konserven Weichsel). Nove sorte se odlikuju krupnim i kvalitetnim plodovima, svetlocrvene (Iskra), tamnocrvene (Nevena) i crvene boje pokožice (Sofija), koji sazrevaju u drugoj (Sofija), odnosno trećoj dekadi juna (Nevena i Iskra). Ispoljavaju značajan stepen poljske otpornosti na Blumeriella jaapii (Rehm.) v. Arx. i Monilinia laxa /Ader et Ruhl./ Honey ex Whetz.

AB - The study was conducted on the in vitro pollen germination at 26 degrees, 28 degrees, 32 degrees and 35 degrees C for 24h of male parental lines, pollen tube growth in vivo in cross pollination of female and male parental lines that make couples in four hybrids: ZP 504 su (female ZPPL 51 x male ZPPL 67); ZP 677 (female ZPPL 17 x male ZPPL 201); ZP 704 (female ZPPL 109 x male ZPPL 79), ZP 611 k (female ZPPL 126 x male ZPPL 105), and the open pollination of female parental lines of the above mentioned hybrids. Pollen germination in vitro and pollen tube growth dynamics in vivo showed different genotypic specificities with the tests applied. The obtained results were discussed in the context of reproductive biology of ZP maize lines and aimed to create the preconditions for successful management and direction of the process in practice -seed production in certain environmental conditions.

AB - Functionality of embryo sacs in 'Asenova Rana' sweet cherry was examined in relation to their vitality and fertilization success rate, in the field conditions, during the period of full bloom conclusive with 21st day. The research was performed over a period of two years. The number of functional embryo sacs (8-, 5- and 4-nucleate) was insignificantly higher in the first year. As regards the number of the embryo sacs with the embryo, approximately the same values in both years were recorded, and reached the maximum between 10th and 14th day from the beginning of full-bloom phenophase. The air temperature conditions during the ten days after the beginning of full bloom were with no significant fluctuations, and made no impact neither on the embryo sacs longevity, nor on the number of the embryo sacs with the embryo, in the open pollination condition. Functionality of embryo sacs, i.e. their vitality, was in a reverse proportion to the number of the embryo sacs with the embryo, i.e. fertilization success.
