AB - The corrosion behaviour of three types of alloys (two low-alloy carbon steel and one stainless iron with ~15 wt.% Cr), in a solution which simulates seawater (3% NaCl solution, pH 8.1) was tested. Tested samples are used to make steel (iron) balls applied in mils for grinding copper and other ore. The corrosion tests were performed using three electrochemical methods, at room temperature in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method, and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) method were applied. Based on measurements by LPR and EIS methods (as non-destructive methods), the value of polarization resistance (Rp) was determined and the general corrosion rate (vcorr) of the examined samples was calculated. The obtained values of the general corrosion rate can be used to calculate the service life of steel (iron) balls under exploitation conditions (seawater). The appearance of the surface after linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurement showed the presence of localized corrosion (pits were formed) of the tested samples, especially stainless iron, and the LSV method is not suitable for the determination of the general corrosion rate of tested samples in seawater. This form of corrosion occurs at high anodic polarizations, during performing LSV measurements.

AB - The incombustible portion of coal that remains after burning is known as bottom or fly ash, and it has a detrimental influence on the environment. One of the possible alternatives for reducing the amount of ash deposited in landfills might be the production of useful glass–ceramic from vitrified fly ash. Glass–ceramic was synthesized using fly ash from the thermal power plant "Nikola Tesla" and fluxing additives. Sinter crystallization of the parent glass resulted in glass ceramics. The glass was created by melting a combination of coal fly ash (CFA), Na2CO3, and CaCO3 at T = 1500 °C and quenching the melt in the air. Glass powders were sintered at temperatures 850 and 900 °C. The resulting glass–ceramics were characterized microstructurally, physically, and mechanically. The cavitation erosion of samples was evaluated. The cavitation rate was 0.015 mg/min for the sample sintered at 850 °C and 0.0053 mg/min for the sample sintered at 900 °C. The leaching of heavy metals in glass–ceramic samples was determined using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure. A low concentration of heavy metals in the leaching solution showed that heavy metals were successfully incorporated in the glass matrix and that obtained glass–ceramics are ecologically safe for usage. Both samples exhibit good resistance to cavitation erosion, suggesting their potential as possible replacements for structural ceramics commonly employed components of hydraulic machinery.

AB - Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was employed to fabricate composite coatings aimed for orthopedic implants. Hydroxyapatite (HAP), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) coatings, with or without antibiotic gentamicin (Gent) were deposited in a single-step process from aqueous suspension, using EPD. Polymer/mineral composite coatings were formed with the aim to mimic the natural composition of bone tissue, along with improved coatings antibacterial properties, at the same time serving as a drug carrier, allowing local administration of antibiotic. Structural and morphological characterization of HAP/PVA/CS and HAP/PVA/CS/Gent coatings was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proving carbonate-substituted HAP. The presence of gentamicin contributed to the bactericidal activity of composite HAP/PVA/CS/Gent coating against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Cytotoxicity studies were performed towards human MRC-5 and mice L929 fibroblast cell lines, and both investigated samples (HAP/PVA/CS and HAP/PVA/CS/Gent) expressed good biocompatibility, without causing toxic effect on tested cells. Biomineralization potential was investigated by measuring the alkaline phosphatase activity, demonstrating high potential of HAP/PVA/CS/Gent to induce the growth of new HAP layer. Therefore, the present investigation proposes the production of composite coatings from non-toxic (aqueous) suspensions, consisting of biocompatible and bioactive components, along with antibiotic gentamicin, improving the antibacterial coatings' properties.

AB - Biocomposite hydroxyapatite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/gentamicin coatings were fabricated on titanium by an electrophoretic deposition process (EPD) from an aqueous suspension using the constant voltage method. Characterization of the deposited coatings was performed by scanning electron micros-copy with field emission (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C. The concentration of the released gentamicin was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS). The release profile confirmed an initial “burst-release effect” with ~ 30 % of the gen-tamicin released in the first 48 h, which could be of assistance in the prevention of biofilm formation. An-tibacterial activity was proven by the agar diffusion method on Staphylococcus aureus TL and Escherich-ia coli ATCC 25922 bacterial strains. Cytotoxicity was tested by the dye exclusion test (DET) on MRC-5 and L929 fibroblast cell lines, with both coatings expressing nontoxicity. The results showed the high ap-plicability potential of a poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposite coating for medical purposes.

AB - The goal of this research is to investigate the effect of SrO and La2O3 addition on the crystallization characteristics and sintering behavior of polyphosphate glasses. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), hot stage microscopy (HSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods were used to investigate the crystallization and sintering behaviors of glasses. The addition of SrO and La2O3 (1 or 5%), at the expense of phosphate mole fraction in polyphosphate bioactive glass, raises the characteristic temperature of glasses, and resistance to crystallization. Furthermore, the temperature of maximal shrinkage increases with the addition of SrO and La2O3. Surface crystallization is the dominant mechanism of crystallization in all samples. All glasses show complex crystallization leading to the formation of several crystalline phases. Sintered phosphate glass–ceramic containing bioactive β-CaP2O6, α-Ca3(PO4)2, and β-Ca3(PO4)2 phases were successfully prepared.

Sintered phosphate glass–ceramic containing bioactive β-CaP2O6, α-Ca3(PO4)2, and β-Ca3(PO4)2 phases were successfully prepared.",

AB - This paper examines the effects of structural-textural characteristics of sulfide minerals on their leaching from polymetallic concentrates with sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solutions. The polymetallic concentrate was obtained by flotation of polymetallic ore from the Rudnik deposit in Serbia. X-ray diffraction (XRD), qualitative and quantitative mineralogical, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), and chemical analyses were used to characterize the polymetallic concentrate and leach residue. The polymetallic concentrate contained chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and quartz. The total content of sulfide minerals was 69.5%, and the occurrence of free sulfide mineral grains was about 60.9%. The comprehensive thermodynamic analysis was done by HSC Chemistry® package 9.9.2.3 to determine optimal experimental leaching conditions. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrrhotite oxidized during leaching, and dissolution occurred. The oxidized galena remains in the solid residual as insoluble anglesite. Also, elemental sulfur and unleached minerals of copper, zinc, and iron were found in the leach residues. It was found that the structural assembly of sulfide minerals in the leach residue is very favorable and that undissolved sulfide grains are primarily present in free form. Accordingly, there was no reason to reduce the leaching rate with time. The presence of elemental sulfur and anglesite formed in the leaching process and precipitated on the surface of mineral grains was confirmed by XRD, quantitative and qualitative mineralogical analysis, and SEM/EDX.

AB - In this work, a possibility to develop a new zircon-based refractory coating for casting applications was investigated. Optimization of the coating composition with controlled rheological properties was attained by application of different coating components, particularly by application of a new suspension agent and by alteration of coating production procedure. Zircon powder with particle size of 25×10-6 m was used as filler. The zircon sample was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, diffraction thermal analysis and polarized microscopy. The shape and grain size were analyzed using OZARIA 2.5 software. It was shown that application of this type of water-alcohol-based coating had a positive influence on surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of the castings of cast iron obtained by pouring into sand molds by means of the expandable patterns method (Lost Foam casting process).
