AB - Polymer composites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and reinforced with particles based on unmodified/modifiedplant provenance biosilica particles were synthesized and characterized. An unsaturated polyester resin was obtained fromwaste poly (ethylene terephthalate (PET). Biosilaca particles are made from rice husk biomass. The surface of the producedsilica particles was modified using three different silanes: 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (MEMO), trimethoxyvinylsilane (TMEVS), and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). The microhardness test method was used to investigatethe mechanical properties of synthesized composite material with variations in dwell times and applied loads. Optimization ofcomposite microhardness value prediction in function of synthesized parameters (type of modification of silica particles) andmeasurement parameters (applied loads and dwell times) was done using the method of response surface methodology (RSM)regression analysis. The maximal microhardness values (0.459 GPa) were obtained of type modification of silica particles withvinyl with 80% confidence for 120 experimental variables. This method can be used to choose the optimal dwell time and loadfor comparison of measurements between different composite materials and to enable the choice of the material in terms ofoptimization of the quality of reinforcement and quality of interphase determined by surface modification.

AB - The influence of samarium, as an additional alloying element, on the morphology and corrosion performance of the Zn-Co-Sm alloy electrodeposited coatings, was investigated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The Zn-Co-Sm coatings were electrodeposited from the aqueous solution containing Sm(NO3)3, ZnCl2, and CoCl2 as the metal ion source. The percentage of Sm in the coating may be very finely tuned by setting electrodeposition parameters, including cathodic current density, glycine concentration in the electroplating solution, and the solution temperature. The coatings with Sm content from 0.5 to 18.5 wt.% were produced. Since low deposition current densities (10–50 mA cm−2) were applied, the samples obtained were of good adhesion and compact. The presence of Sm2O3 inclusion was verified by XRD as the Sm2O3 crystalline phase. Samarium is incorporated in the coatings through the mechanism of oxide/hydroxide formation during the electroreduction of Zn and Co. Corrosion tests in NaCl solution show that the presence of Sm significantly increases the polarization resistance for the corrosion process of Zn-Co-Sm coatings (one order of magnitude, i.e., from ~500 Ω cm2 measured without Sm to 2000–3000 Ω cm2 with 12 wt.% Sm), giving evidence of the self-healing action that is provided by Sm particles in the coatings. This effect is more pronounced in the case when the coatings contain a higher Sm percentage.

AB - Public parks and open playgrounds are the most important compartments of the urban environment due to their role in sustaining the well-being of city residents, primarily through relaxation and recreation. To determine the occurrence, levels, and sources of 16 US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and consequent human health risk, soil samples from 18 parks and playgrounds from Kruševac, a mid-sized city in Serbia, were collected and analyzed. The concentrations of PAHs were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentration of selected PAHs ranged from 14 to 121 µg kg−1, with a mean of 55 µg kg−1. The measured concentrations of individual PAHs were well below limits set by national legislation and were much lower than reported values for cities worldwide. Principal component analyses and positive matrix factorization were employed to identify possible PAH sources. Traffic emissions and coal, firewood, and natural gas combustion were identified as the main sources of PAHs in the analyzed soil. The most polluted soil samples were found in parks and playgrounds near busy roads and in the most densely populated city districts. A risk assessment procedure established by the US EPA showed no significant risk, either carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic, associated with exposure to PAHs in the soil for adults and children who use parks and open playgrounds for recreational purposes.

AB - Adsorption of carbamate pesticide Methomyl by Co-Beta Zeolite particles prepared by wet ion-exchange method from aqueous solutions was studied. The effect of zeolite and pesticide concentrations, pH value, and sintering temperature on pesticide removal from an aqueous solution was studied. The change of methomyl concentration during the adsorption was followed using the UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) revealed the modified zeolite morphology and elemental structure. The change of the adsorbent surface before and after dye removal was observed using the Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and at optimal condition adsorption rate is k1 = 0.0166 g mg-1 min-1. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkovich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process. Thermodynamic parameters were also determined using experimental data. The thermodynamic study indicates that during pesticide adsorption is, chemisorption and physisorption are present at the same.

AB - Electromagnetic interference (EMI) has become a widespread modern environmental pollutant. There is an essential need for practical and applicable materials for its attenuation. Therefore, the presented research has focused on metallization of carbon fabric using the silver conductive complex solution to enhance the surface conductivity and mechanical properties of the fabric. With this amplification and improving the mentioned characteristics, lightweight and flexible modified carbon fibers can be applied in many environments. The modification has been performed in three steps: the silver conductive complex synthesis, carbon fabric immersion into a silver complex solution, treating with temperature for silver deposition by annealing. The method used for the metallization of carbon fabrics surface does not require expensive and toxic chemicals or electricity, making the process more ecologically and economically acceptable. One of the advantages of using the method for surface modification is the possibility of usage for other materials, not only for textiles and foils. The examination of the surface structure, electrical, EMI shielding characteristics, and mechanical properties of carbon fabrics modified by silver deposition contributes to the determination of multifunctional properties of materials. Also, the dependence on the improvement of multispectral electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) characteristics and mechanical properties of materials on the number of cycles has been determined. The most effective material was carbon fabric modified by five cycles, and average attenuation at an L and S bands was 49.67 dB, and a part of C and full X band was 51.07 dB, caused by better coverage by silver particles, increased density and porosity of deposited layer. Increasing the number of silver deposition cycles improves the physical properties of the modified carbon fabrics, where after five cycles the highest maximum force has been measured (2.26 kN). The material's morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic phases of sintered particles were determined by X-ray diffraction.

AB - Koncentracije potencijalno toksičnih elemenata (PTE) As, Cd, Hg i Pb su određene u
geoakumulacionog indeksa.
AB - The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTE) As, Cd, Hg, and Pb was determined
in the topsoil of 16 parks and open playgrounds for sport and recreation purposes in the City of
Kruševac, Serbia. Analysis was performed utilizing inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry.
Both, median and mean values of As and Pb concentration were higher than their corresponding
natural baseland content in the Western Serbia soil, which was used as reference soil for ecological
risk assessment. Comparison of the determined concentration of selected elements with national
legislation showed that they did not exceed respective interventional remediation values, while
maximal allowed concentration for agricultural soil was exceeded for several locations for As and Pb. The measured concentration of PTEs fell in the range of published results for other cities in
Serbia and worldwide. Ecological risk due to the presence of selected elements in the soil was
assessed by calculating different pollution indices. Values of Pollution Load Index pointed out the
existence of contamination at two locations. Contamination Factor values showed that soil of studied
parks and open playgrounds was predominantly non-contaminated to moderately contaminated by
selected PTEs, which was also confirmed by values of geoaccumulation index.

AB - The degradation of Acid Blue 111 anthraquinone dye has been studied by the simple electro-assisted Fenton process and the obtained results were compared to the Fenton process. Ferrous sulphate and hydrogen peroxide were used and in the electro-assisted Fenton process IrOx electrode was used as the anode. The influence of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ion concentration, as well as pH on the processes was investigated. A second-order kinetic was established and rate constants were determined. The degradation was followed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Mineralization of Acid Blue 111 was confirmed by total organic carbon analysis and ion chromatography analysis. Efficiency and energy consumption of the processes were calculated. Also, phytotoxicity was studied using the Mung bean seeds. According to the obtained results, the simple electro-assisted Fenton process was much efficient in the degradation of Acid Blue 111 dye than the Fenton process.

AB - The flow of air and aerosol particles through the filtering half masks material depends on the structure porosity. It is very difficult to determine the behaviour of the filtering material during the process of extraction and retention of aerosols. The samples of five filtering half mask models were used in this investigation. Dynamics of the aerosol filtration through the filtering materials was tested using a method for testing the leakage of aerosol particles through the filtering material and a method for testing the inhalation resistance of filtering material, both specified in the SRPS EN 149:2013. Recording of the structural changes in the samples of the tested materials was carried out by the technique of scanning electron microscopy. The experiments showed a deviation of the results in relation to the theory of filtration the finely dispersed submicron sized particles. It was concluded that the aerosol leakage through the filtering half masks and their resistance to aerosol flow change depend on the aerosol flow rates and the on filtration process duration, as a direct consequence of the newly-made changes in the structure of the filtering material and due to reversibility effect between the filtration process and the changes in the filtering material.

AB - The anthraquinone dye, C.I. Acid Blue 111, was subjected to electrochemical oxidation using an IrOx electrode and sodium sulphate or sodium chloride as electrolytes. The effects of different operating parameters on the rate of dye decolorization, such as applied current, electrolyte concentration, and initial pH were studied. The dye concentration during the study was followed via ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The changes in the dye molecule during electrochemical oxidation were analyzed by Fourier Transformation-infrared spectroscopy. The level of mineralization after electrochemical oxidation was established by total organic carbon analysis.

AB - Sorption of the Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions by the Na+-enriched natural clinoptilolite (Na-CLI) from aqueous solutions containing both Zn2+ and Ni2+ ions at a range of concentrations has been studied at 298, 308, and 318K. It was found that the sorption of a particular ion by Na-CLI increases with the increase in the initial concentration of the solution of that ion. At a given initial concentration, the sorption degree increases with temperature. Also, the sorption of a particular ion is greater when the initial solution contains a second ion than it is when the particular ion is present alone. The sorption kinetics is in accord with the pseudo-second-order reaction rate model. The values of the k(2) rate constant do not show a regular change with the initial Zn2+/Ni2+ concentrations probably because the presence of the second ion has a significant effect on the reaction rate. Thermodynamic study has shown that the sorption is exothermic, occurring spontaneously in the 298-318K range and with a positive entropy change.
