AB - In-depth kinetic and column adsorption study for diclofenac, DCF, heavy-metal and oxyanions adsorption on highly effective amino-functionalized lignin-based microsphere adsorbent (A-LMS) is examined. The A-LMS was synthesized via inverse suspension copolymerization of industrial kraft lignin with the amino containing grafting-agent (polyethylene imine), and an epoxy chloropropane cross-linker. The batch adsorption results indicated process spontaneity and feasibility of a high removal capacity: DCF(151.13)>>Cd2+(74.84)>Cr(VI)(54.20)>As(V)(53.12)>Ni2+(49.42 mg g−1). The quantum chemical calculated interaction energies reveal stabilization of the A-LMS/DCF complex through the electrostatics and van der Waals interactions. The results from the pseudo-second order and Weber-Morris fitting indicate a fast removal rate; thus, column tests were undertaken. The single resistance mass transfer model, i.e. the mass transfer (kfa) and diffusion coefficient (Deff), shows pore diffusional transport as a rate limiting step. The fitting of the fixed bed column data with empirical models demonstrates the influences of flow rate and adsorbate inlet concentration on the breakthrough behavior. Pore surface diffusion modeling (PSDM) expresses mass transport under applied hydraulic loading rates, calculated breakthrough point adsorption capacities: Cd2+(58.1)>Cr(VI)(54.1)>As(V)(50.9)>>Ni2+(42.9 mg g−1)), without performing the experimentation on a full pilot-scale level, further confirms the high applicability of the A-LMS bio-based adsorbent.

AB - Sustainable development and the circular economy are becoming the new imperative of industrial growth, as the world faces the depletion of natural resources and consequences of climate change. The utilization of waste streams through the concept of ‘new added value’ gives life to the production of materials and their environmental application. Therefore, the development of novel, eco-friendly, nature-based adsorbents that possess high degradable and recyclable potential is on the forefront of research. The modifications of wood derivates, such as cellulose and lignin, are widely applied as natural polymers due to their economic feasibility, ecological similarity and adsorption capabilities.

The subject of this study is the adsorption of nickel(II) and cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solutions using 5.0 mass % of alginate lignin microspheres (A-LMS). Due to their toxicity, persistence, high solubility and mobility, such heavy metals are widely dispersed throughout environmental media (chiefly, aquatic bodies), leading to ecological and public health problems. The raw lignin used as a source material in the study originates from the waste stream of the lumber industry. The porous microspheres are of a radius of 50 to 950 microns and a surface area of 36.9 m2 g-1 were synthesized via inverse suspension copolymerization of the kraft lignin with a poly(ethylene imine) grafting-agent and an epichlorohydrin cross-linker. The structural and surface characteristics were confirmed via Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The textural properties of the synthesized A-LMS were determined according to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method of analyzing nitrogen adsorption. The adsorption batch and column testing were carried out by varying the reaction time, temperature, adsorbent mass, at predefined pH values of the initial solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the A-LMS for nickel (II) ions was 89.286 mg g-1 at a temperature of 318 K, while for the adsorption of cadmium(II) ions it was 96.154 mg g-1 at a temperature of 308 K. The kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the Weber-Morris model indicated intra-particle diffusion as a rate limiting step. The thermodynamic parameters for the A-LMS further confirm that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic.

The study indicates the high potential of by-products or waste products from heavy industry to be repurposed for environmental engineering applications by which they may serve a benefit as opposed to being a detrimental risk. Such is the case here with lignin-natural polymers taken from the lumber industry, which themselves may be reutilized for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

AB - Oxidized starch, an additive used in paper manufacturing and products for construction industry, is usually produced using harmful oxidant, such as hypochlorites or periodates. In this study, a simple and efficient eco-friendly laboratory and industrial procedures for starch oxidation were developed. The procedure involves application of small amounts of more environmentally friendly oxidant, hydrogen peroxide, a novel special metal complex catalyst such as copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate and biobased plasticizers. Optimization procedure, with respect to the quantity of hydrogen peroxide and temperature in the presence of iron(II) sulphate catalyst, was performed by using the response surface methodology. Comparative analysis of the use of the other catalysts that is copper(II) sulphate, copper(II) citrate and copper(II) ricinoleate, indicated copper(II) citrate as the catalyst of choice. Improvement of starch is achieved using three plasticizers: ricinoleic acid (RA), diisopropyl tartarate, as well as epoxidized soybean, linseed and sunflower oils. The effects of hydrogen peroxide and catalyst concentrations, as well as the reaction temperature in the presence of naturally based plasticizers on the physicochemical, thermal and morphological properties of oxidized starch are presented. According to the results obtained in initial experiments, the optimal industrial process is based on the use of copper(II) citrate (0.1 %) as a catalyst and RA (3 %) as a plasticizer.

AB - Novel highly effective amino-functionalized lignin-based biosorbent in the microsphere geometry (A-LMS) for removal of heavy metal ions, was synthesized via inverse suspension copolymerization of kraft lignin with poly(ethylene imine) grafting-agent and epoxy chloropropane cross-linker. Optimization of A-LMS synthesis, performed with respect to the quantity of sodium alginate emulsifier (1, 5 and 10 wt%), provides highly porous microspheres A-LMS_5, using 5 wt% emulsifier, with 800 +/- 80 mu m diameter, 7.68 m(2) g(-1) surface area and 7.7 mmol g(-1) of terminal amino groups. Structural and surface characteristics were obtained from Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and porosity determination. In a batch test, the influence of pH, A-LMS_5 dose, temperature, contact time on adsorption efficiency of Ni2+, Cd2+, As(V) and Cr(VI) ions were studied. The adsorption is spontaneous and feasible with maximum adsorption capacity of 74.84, 54.20, 53.12 and 49.42 mg g(-1) for Cd2+, Cr(VI), As(V) and Ni2+ ions, respectively, obtained by using Langmuir model. Modeling of kinetic data indicated fast adsorbate removal rate with pore diffusional transport as rate limiting step (pseudo-second order model and Weber-Morris equations), thus further confirming high performances of produced bio-adsorbent for heavy metal ions removal.

AB - In this research, it has been demonstrated that amino-modified microspheres (A-LMS) based on bio-waste derived material, such as kraft lignin, have good prospects in usage as a support for enzyme immobilization, since active biocatalyst systems were prepared by immobilizing beta-galactosidase fromA. oryzaeand laccase fromM. thermophilaexpressed inA. oryzae(Novozym (R) 51003) onto A-LMS. Two types of A-LMS were investigated, with different emulsifier concentrations (5 wt% and 10 wt%), and microspheres produced using 5 wt% of emulsifier (A-LMS_5) showed adequate pore shape, size and distribution for enzyme attachment. The type of interactions formed between enzymes (beta-galactosidase and laccase) and A-LMS_5 microspheres demonstrated that beta-galactosidase is predominantly attachedviaelectrostatic interactions while attachment of laccase is equally governed by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Furthermore, the A-LMS_5-beta-galactosidase exhibited specificity towards recognized prebiotics (galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS)) synthesis with 1.5-times higher GOS production than glucose production, while for environmental pollutant lindane degradation, the immobilized laccase preparation exhibited high activity with a minimum remaining lindane concentration of 22.4% after 6 days. Thus, this novel enzyme immobilization support A-LMS_5 has potential for use in green biotechnologies.

abstract = "In this research, it has been demonstrated that amino-modified microspheres (A-LMS) based on bio-waste derived material, such as kraft lignin, have good prospects in usage as a support for enzyme immobilization, since active biocatalyst systems were prepared by immobilizing beta-galactosidase fromA. oryzaeand laccase fromM. thermophilaexpressed inA. oryzae(Novozym (R) 51003) onto A-LMS. Thus, this novel enzyme immobilization support A-LMS_5 has potential for use in green biotechnologies.",

AB - An optimized method is presented to make magnetite (MG) modified cellulose membrane (Cell-MG) from 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid dianhydride functionalized waste cell fibers; (Cell-NH(2)and Cell-DTPA), and amino-modified diatomite. Functionalized Cell-NH2, Cell-DTPA fibers, and diatomite were structurally and morphologically characterized using FT-IR, Raman, and FE-SEM analysis. Amino and carboxyl group content was determined via standard volumetric methods. Response surface method was applied to rationalize the number of experiments related to Cell-MG synthesis and heavy metal ions column adsorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time, temperature, and initial concentration of pollutants on adsorption and kinetics were studied in a batch, while initial concentration and flow rate were studied in a flow system. The calculated capacities of 88.2, 100.7, 95.8 and 78.2 mg g(-1)for Ni2+, Pb2+, Cr(VI) and As(V) ions, respectively, were obtained from Langmuir model fitting. Intra-particle diffusion as a rate-limiting step was evaluated from pseudo-second-order and Weber-Morris model fitting. Thermodynamic parameters indicated spontaneous and low endothermic processes. The results from reusability study, wastewater purification and fixed-bed column study proved the high applicability of Cell-MG. Additionally, high removal capacity of four dyes together with density functional theory and molecular interaction fields, help in the establishment of relation between the adsorption performances and contribution of non-specific and specific interactions at adsorbate/adsorbent interface.

AB - In this work, the optimization of synthesis of terpolymer monolith based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and additional cross-linkers: trimethylolpropanetriacrylate (TMPTA) or triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) was performed. Moreover, novel vinyl functionalized cross-linkable polymers: ethanolamine (EA)/methacryloyl (MAC) modified poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and hydrolyzed poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVOH) modified with MAC either directly or via ethyl malonyl chloride/EA bridging group (m-EVA) were used as cross-linkable polymer to improve mechanical/elastic properties of the obtained monoliths. Optimization procedure, performed applying response surface methodology (RSM), was focused on the production of materials with improved dimensional stability/integrity and porosity with abundance of epoxide groups capable for immobilization of lipase from Candida rugosa (CRL). Structural characterization of the synthesized monoliths was determined using FTIR, Raman and H-1 NMR spectroscopies, while morphology/porosity was determined by SEM technique and image analysis; and mechanical properties by diametral compression testing. The most potential monolith containing m-EVA polymeric cross-linker, i.e. GMA/EGDMA/TEGDMA/m-EVA monolith, was used as CRL carrier in a two-step immobilization process. Enzyme loading and the activity of obtained preparations for various initial enzyme concentrations were monitored after 4 and 48 h of immobilization. The resulting catalysts show high potency in biocatalytic reactions with the highest percentage of retained initial lipase activity of 64.5%.

AB - Industrial/technological growth is directly connected with environmental pollution, but its influence can be minimized through pollution abatement approaches such as the treatment of industrial wastewater. In this study, novel porous amine-functionalized silicate minerals, specifically, cordierite was investigated for the removal of toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewaters. Cordierite supports were synthesized by mixing MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 powders in 2:2:5 molar ratios, and mechanically activated via ball milling in ethanol for 10, 40, or 80 min. Pellets were sintered by heating in air at 20 degrees C min(-1) to 1,350 degrees C, for 2 h. Porous supports were produced by coarsely crushing the sintered pellets and mixing the crushed and sieved cordierite powder with 20 wt.% of a pore-forming agent, either nanocellulose or yeast. The resulting pellets were sintered by heating at 5 degrees C min(-1) to 700 degrees C in air. The synthetic cordierite support was modified by treatment in poly-ethylenimine. Activated supports were then tested for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ ions. The phase composition of the cordierite supports was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 36 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 43 mg g(-1) for Ni2+. This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metal removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid functionalized cordierite-based ceramic.

AB - Supercritical CO2 impregnation process was used for the first time to fabricate biodegradable gelatin-chitosan (G/Ch) films containing dove oil (CO) for potential use in active food packaging. All the impregnations were carried out at moderately low temperature (40 degrees C). Aiming to maximize CO loading in the films with acceptable morphological, structural and thermal properties, CO2 pressure, impregnation time and G:Ch mass ratio were varied. Gelatin fraction in the films of 25-50 wt. %, scCO(2) pressures of 10-20 MPa and impregnation time of 2-6 h impregnation favoured the CO loading. Processing of the film with equal gelatin to chitosan mass ratio (G/Ch(50:50)) at 10 MPa for 2 h yielded sufficiently high loading (56 mg CO/g(film)) without an adverse effect on morphological properties. The G/Ch(50:50) film was therefore chosen for structural and thermal analyses. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed successful CO incorporation into the G/Ch(50:50) and its interaction with the film. Plasticizing effect of scCO(2) and CO on the film was evidenced by DSC. Incorporation of 56 mg CO/g(film) into the G/Ch(50:50) didn't affect thermal stability of the film. Beside environmental benefits, supercritical impregnation process enables fast fabrication of G/Ch bio-composite films containing CO, thermally stable to 110 degrees C, which is suitable for most of food packaging applications.

AB - Synthesis of branched aminated waste polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, realized in a three addition/amidation successive steps, was performed in order to obtain AS3-PAN adsorbent. Influence of various operating parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent mass and initial concentration of pollutants, on adsorption capacity has been studied. Design of the experimental plan of adsorption experiments, defined by response surface methodology (RSM), rationalized the number of necessary experiments. The calculated adsorption capacities for AS3-PAN, obtained by Langmuir model, were 58.94, 41.07, 34.51, 24.54 and 29.61 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Cr(VI) and As(V) ion, respectively. The results of pseudo-second-order reaction rate and Weber-Morris kinetic model indicated significant resistance due to intra-particle (pore) diffusion. The experimental results were compared with the theoretically calculated ones, obtained by RSM prediction model, and validation of applied methodology was performed by testing the quality of the regression analysis with analysis of variance test.

The experimental results were compared with the theoretically calculated ones, obtained by RSM prediction model, and validation of applied methodology was performed by testing the quality of the regression analysis with analysis of variance test.",

AB - Comparative adsorption study related to benefits of parent media size, i.e. microfibrillated cellulose (MC) versus nanocellulose (NC) support, for the preparation of magnetite (MG) based high performance adsorbent for arsenic removal was conducted. Precipitation of MG on amino terminal branched organic structure, L, either linked by maleic acid residue on NC surface (NC-MA/L) or linked by oxalyl bridge on MC surface (MC-O/L) produced NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG adsorbents, respectively. Precipitation of nanosized MG on amino functionalized NC-MA/L and MC-O/L, performed according to optimized procedure, contributed to improved textural properties and adsorptive/kinetic performances of novel adsorbents. Adsorption capacity of arsenate, As(V), was in favor of NC-MA/L-MG (85.3 versus 18.5 mg g(-1)) while MC-O/L-MG exhibited faster kinetics (0.541 versus 0.189 g mg(-1) min(-1)). Lower capacity of arsenite, As(III), removal, 68.3 mg g(-1) for NC-MA/L-MG and 17.8 mg g(-1) for MC-O/L-MG, were obtained. Calculated activation energies, 13.28 and 10.87 kJ mol(-1) for NC-MA/L-MG and MC-O/L-MG with respect to As(V), respectively, suggest, in accordance with results of Weber-Morris fitting, that internal mass transfer controls adsorption process. Model free adsorption kinetics confirmed beneficial uses of MC-O/L-MG due to low activation energy dependence on the extent of adsorption.

AB - Two types of alumina particles, commercial (c-Al2O3) and iron doped (Fe-Al2O3), were functionalized with 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (one-step) and two-step consecutive process, i.e. firstly using 3-(aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane followed by methyl ester of linseed oil (biodiesel) to produce Al(2)O(3)ATPMS-BD reinforcement, respectively. The effect of modifier type and variable amount of alumina particles on the dynamical and mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester resin-based composites was studied. The highest improvement of the tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness, 78.1 and 163%, respectively, was obtained at 1.0 wt% of Fe-Al(2)O(3)APTMS-BD addition. The obtained multifunctional composites can be potentially applied in construction and mining industries.

AB - Presented study was aimed to investigate the influence of surface functionalization of the industrial kraft lignin (KL) on mechanical and thermal properties of high-performance and fireproof composites based on unsaturated polyester (UPe) resin. In order to improve flame retardant properties, surface of the KL was modified by phosphorylation method in two-step process. First, direct grafting of phosphorus chloride on KL phenolic hydroxyl groups was performed and phosphoric acid ester of KL was formed. In the second step, phosphor ester of KL was recovered by precipitation in cooled isopropyl alcohol and the final obtained product, phosphorylated industrial kraft lignin with methyl terminal groups (KLP) was obtained. KLP mass contents in UPe based composites varied from 0.5 wt.% to 5.0 wt.%. Structural characterization was done via Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The effects of KLP surface functionalization and KLP mass contents on the UPe tensile properties were studied. Tensile strength (σ), elongation (ε) and Young's modulus of elasticity (E) and Shore A (Sh A) hardness of the UPe/KLP composites were analyzed in relation to the structure of KLP modification. Tensile testing results showed an increase in σ of 31 % for UPe/KL sample with 1.0 wt.% KL particles compared to the bare UPe matrix. The origin and cause of fracture that occurred during uniaxial tensile testing were analyzed using stereo microscopy. The obtained composites were tested on fire retardant properties in accordance with the standard test method UL-94V, and composites with 5.0 wt.% loaded KLP achieved V-1 category.
%. Strukturna karakterizacija funkcionalizovanog kraft lignina i kompozita izvršena je primenom FT-IR spektroskopije. Proučavan je uticaj funkcionalizacije i masenog udela kraft lignina na tvrdoću, zatezna i termička svojstva nezasićenih poliestеrskih smola. Shore A) ostala zadovoljavajuća.

AB - The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work. Two methods of tannin modification were applied: direct method using ammonium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride buffer or diethylenetriamine (DETA); and a two-step method including tannin modification with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in first step to produce epoxy modified tannin, ET, and further modification with heteroaromatic amines or linseed oil fatty acids (LFA) in second step. The obtained anticorrosive additives were characterized using ATR-FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Epoxy, amino, hydroxyl, acid and iodine values of the synthesized inhibitors were determined according to standard methods. The prepared alkyd coating with tannin inhibitors was tested according to standard SRPS EN ISO 4628 method. Anticorrosive coating containing modified tannin based additive showed increased anticorrosive properties, good adhesion and coverage comparing to the coating with zinc phosphate additive. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results.

AB - The investigation of the influence of acid/base treatment and addition level of non-metallic fractions (NMFs), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards, on the mechanical properties and shrinkage of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR)-based composites was main topic presented in this paper. NMF particles were treated using four different oxidative/etching agents: H2SO4/KMnO4 (NMF1), H2SO4/HNO3 (NMF2), HNO3 (NMF3), and NaOH (NMF4). Treated NMF(1-4) particles were characterized using fourier transform infrared, Boehm titration, optical microscopy and SEM analysis. Tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness of UPR/NMF(1-4) composites were the most improved with addition of 0.5wt% of filler, for 5.9-24.7%, in comparison to composite filled with non-treated NMF particles. Cross-linking density (nu), storage, and loss modulus (G' and G''), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) testing. Shrinkage measurements, performed using Aramis 6.2.0, showed significant improvement in shrinkage reducing, for 17.8-30.6%, by introduction the oxidized NMF particles. Qualitative/quantitative evaluation of NMF(1-4) surface functionalities helped in understanding their influences on mechanical, DMA and shrinkage properties change of studied composites. POLYM. AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)-functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL--APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mossbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456mgg(-1) for WL--APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382mgg(-1) for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL--APS/MG, e.g., 1.17-13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL--APS.

AB - In this work, alkali and oxidative treatments were employed to obtain flax fibers with different content of hemicelluloses and lignin, in order to study the influence of chemical composition on structure and sorption properties of flax fibers. The flax fibers were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and FESEM microscopy, and by determination of chemical composition, carboxyl group content, electrokinetic and sorption properties. Adsorption of silver ions was used to evaluate flax fiber sorption properties, but also to obtain antimicrobial fibers whose antimicrobial activity was tested against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and fungi Candida albicans. The progressive removal of hemicelluloses or lignin influenced the sorption properties through the increased liberation of elementary fibers and accessibility of functional surface groups of flax fibers. Removal of hemicelluloses led to increase of iodine sorption without significant change in functional groups content and electrokinetic properties. On the other hand, lignin removal led to an increase of functional groups content, namely carboxyl groups, which in turn influenced better moisture and silver ions sorption. Flax fibers with incorporated silver exhibit fair antimicrobial activity against Gram (-) E. coli, Gram (+) S. aureus and fungi C. albicans.

njihova karakterizacija primenom BET metode, FTIR analize i ispitivanjem tačke nultog naelektrisanja.

AB - Unsaturated fatty acid (FA)-modified nanocellulose (m-NC) shows potential application in improving mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/m-NC nanocomposites (UPe/m-NC). A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m-NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross-linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox-Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross-linking capabilities on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m-NC is studied. Cross-linking density, modulus, and T-g of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification.

AB - The innovative laboratory procedure for the synthesis of copper(II) hydroxide in the form of the aqueous suspension was developed. The reaction mechanism consists of the reaction between copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate and sodium carbonate by successive ion exchange of carbonate ions with the hydroxide ones in a multistep process. Production of copper(II) carbonate and sodium sulphate by reacting of copper(II) sulphate with sodium carbonate was followed by addition of sodium hydroxide solution whereby the product, copper(II) hydroxide, was obtained by releasing an equimolar amount of sodium carbonate. It was determined that, the equimolar reaction of copper(II) sulphate and sodium hydroxide lead to the maximal reactants exploitation. Sodium phosphate, formed in the final process stage by addition of 10% phosphoric acid solution, acted as a copper(II) hydroxide stabilizer. High yield of the product was obtained by optimizing the synthesis parameters: reaction time, molar ratio of reactants and the reaction temperature. The obtained product was formulated to obtain a commercial product, which is used as a fungicide and bactericide.

AB - The influence of modification and vacuum/supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)) drying methods on the surface properties, morphology and thermal stability of cellulose nanocrystals (NC) was presented in this study. Introduction of reactive vinyl groups on NC surface was performed by either direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed or sunflower oil fatty acids; or by amidation of maleic acid/ethylene diamine with methyl ester of fatty acid. Obtained modified NC (m-NC) were characterized using MR and Raman spectroscopy; and by determination of acid, iodine and ester values. Structural analysis of m-NC showed varieties of forms, from spongy to nanostructural non-uniform layered morphology with observable agglomeration, which confirmed morphology dependence on modification/processing methods Thermogravimetry-MS spectrometry showed different thermal stability and degradation pathways of NC/m-NC. Incorporation of 1 wt% of reactive m-NC in unsaturated polyester lead to high performance nanocomposites and contributed to increase of stress at break in the range from 76 to 93%.

AB - Unsaturated polyester resin (UPe)-based nanocomposites and fumed silica Aerosil R812S, R805 and R816, and R200 modified with phenyl terminal group, R200NPh, were prepared. UPe resins were synthesized from maleic anhydride and products of glycolysis, obtained by polyethylene terephthalate depolymerization with dipropylene glycol in the presence of tetrabutyl titanate catalyst. The obtained unsaturated polyesters were characterized by acid, hydroxyl, and iodine values and by FTIR and NMR analysis. The microstructural analysis of the prepared nanocomposites, performed by using transmission electron microscopy, confirmed that silica nanoparticles formed chain-like aggregates in the polymer matrix. The presence of modified silica nanoparticles had no influence on the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of polyester matrix. The tensile modulus, stress at break, and hardness of cured products increased with increasing silica content. The impact strength of cured samples was not influenced by the silica content.

AB - Production of rubber plasticizers, based on waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and economic effectiveness of developed technologies are presented and discussed. Waste PET glycolyzates, named diisononyl terephthalate(DINTP), didecyl terephthalate (DDTP), dibenzyl terephthalate(DBTP) and diglyceryl terephthalate(DGTP), were obtained by catalytic depolymerization of PET with isononyl alcohol, decyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol and glycerol. The structural analysis of the synthesized plasticizers was done using elemental, FTIR and NMR spectral analysis. Physical-mechanical properties of the rubber products composed of 100 phr of 28 % nitrile butadiene caoutchouc (NBR) and 20.7 phr of plasticizer were investigated. Influence of the synthesized plasticizers on Shore hardness, breaking strength and elongation at break was investigated. Obtained results were compared with ones obtained for commercial plasticizer dioctyl phthatale (DOP). Evaluation of economic potential of new technology for plasticizers production, i.e. results of techno-economic analysis, was presented. Benefits of the presented technology was based on the use of waste PET which is related to both environmental protection and profitability aspects.

AB - Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. UPR, based on products of PET depolymerization, and NMF were characterized using FTIR, NMR, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis. Cross-linking density (v), storage modulus (G'), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the DMA testing. Tensile (sigma(t)) and flexural (sigma(f)) strength, and micro Vickers hardness indicated good composite performance under static load. Thermal and flame resistant properties were analyzed by TGA/DTG and UL-94 flammability test whereby V-2 category of appropriate composite was achieved. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials.

abstract = "Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials.",
