AB - Jute fibers are characterized by a complex layered structure with the presence of a
hydrophobic surface outer layer consisting of a mixture of waxes and fats. This outer layer is
responsible for fibers' low sorption properties. In this work, raw jute fabric was subjected to
atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) under different conditions (150 Hz and
15.2 kV, vs. 300 Hz and 12.6 kV, air as working gas, constant time of 120 s) to remove the
mentioned hydrophobic layer. Changes in the surface chemistry of DBD modified jute fabrics
were monitored by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and measurement of the electrokinetic properties,
while the fabric sorption properties were evaluated by measuring the wetting time and
capillarity. Special attention was given to the aging effect investigated up to fourteen days after
plasma treatment.
The obtained results reveal that the measurement of the electrokinetic properties could be used to follow changes in the surface chemistry of DBD treated jute fabrics due to the post-plasma reactions (Fig. 1) and confirm the significance of aging effects in natural cellulose fibers’ functionalization using plasma. Although the changes in the fabric surface chemistry were more pronounced for fabric treated with a higher DBD frequency DBD, a lower frequency DBD treatment resulted in better sorption properties. Both DBD treatments and aging decreased wetting time from 145.9±6.0 s for raw jute fabric down to 1.2±0.1 s for a lower frequency DBD treated fabric after 7 days of aging. Independently on the applied DBD treatment conditions, the jute fabrics' capillarity was significantly improved; i.e., their capillary height increased from 87 mm for the raw jute fabrics up to 138 mm and 120 mm for a lower and higher frequency DBD treated fabrics, respectively.

AB - This study aimed to obtain functional viscose textiles based on chitosan coatings with improved antibacterial properties and washing durability. For that reason, before functionalization with chitosan/zinc nanoparticles (NCH+Zn), the viscose fabric was modified by nonthermal gas plasma of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to introduce into its structure functional groups suitable for attachment of NCH+Zn. NCH+Zn were characterized by measurements of hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential and AFM. DBD-plasma-modified and NCH+Zn-functionalized fabrics were characterized by zeta potential measurements, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, the calcium acetate method (determination of content of carboxyl and aldehyde groups), SEM, breaking-strength measurements, elemental analysis, and ICP-OES. Their antibacterial activity was determined under dynamic contact conditions. In addition to SEM, the NCH+Zn distributions on viscose fabrics were also indirectly characterized by measuring their absorbent capacities before and after functionalization with NCH+Zn. Washing durability was monitored through changes in the zeta potential, chitosan and zinc content, and antibacterial activity after 1, 3, and 5 washing cycles. The obtained results showed that DBD plasma modification contributed to the simultaneous improvement of NCH+Zn sorption and antibacterial properties of the viscose fabric functionalized with NCH+Zn, and its washing durability, making it suitable for the production of high-value-added medical textiles.

AB - The surface of cellulose films, obtained from micro nanofibrillated cellulose produced with different enzymatic pretreatment digestion times of refined pulp, was exposed to gas plasma, resulting in a range of surface chemical and morphological changes affecting the mechanical and surface interactional properties. The action of separate and dual exposure to oxygen and nitrogen cold dielectric barrier discharge plasma was studied with respect to the generation of roughness (confocal laser and atomic force microscopy), nanostructural and chemical changes on the cellulose film surface, and their combined effect on wettability. Elemental analysis showed that with longer enzymatic pretreatment time the wetting response was sensitive to the chemical and morphological changes induced by both plasma gases, but distinctly oxygen plasma was seen to induce much greater morphological change while nitrogen plasma contributed more to chemical modification of the film surface. In this novel study, it is shown that exposure to oxygen plasma, subsequently followed by exposure to nitrogen plasma, leads first to an increase in wetting, and second to more hydrophobic behaviour, thus improving, for example, suitability for printing using polar functional inks or providing film barrier properties, respectively.

AB - Hemp fibers with different amount of hemicelluloses and lignin were subjected to atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge under different conditions (40 W and 80 W power of discharge, const. time 120 s) in order to study influence of plasma treatment on their structure and sorption properties. Wettability of plasma treated samples, compared with precursors, increased due to the changes in hemp fiber surface chemistry confirmed by ATR FTIR spectroscopy and increased roughness as a consequence of intensive surface etching, observed by SEM. After plasma treatment, wettability was the highest for hemp fibers with lower content of hemicelluloses (increase up to 9 times), while wettability of raw hemp fibers and fibers with lower content of lignin increased about 5 and 2 times, respectively. This investigation shows that plasma can be successfully used for improvement of raw hemp fibers wettability, even to substitute the chemical treatment for some applications of hemp.

abstract = "Hemp fibers with different amount of hemicelluloses and lignin were subjected to atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge under different conditions (40 W and 80 W power of discharge, const. time 120 s) in order to study influence of plasma treatment on their structure and sorption properties. This investigation shows that plasma can be successfully used for improvement of raw hemp fibers wettability, even to substitute the chemical treatment for some applications of hemp.",

AB - Cellulose fabrics (viscose and cotton) were treated with atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air. After DBD treatment, samples were characterized and volume electrical resistance was measured under different relative humidity conditions (phi=40-55 %). Results have shown that DBD treatment increases wettability and polar surface functional groups content, which consequently causes a decrease of volume electrical resistivity of cellulose fabrics in measured relative humidity range (phi=40-55 %). Metal ions (silver, copper, and zinc) were incorporated in untreated and plasma treated samples through sorption from aqueous solutions and incorporation of metal ions into plasma treated cellulose samples decreased electrical resistivity even further. Resistivity of cotton and viscose fabrics with incorporated metal ions followed the order Zn2+ gt Cu2+ gt Ag+. The most pronounced decrease, for entire order of a magnitude, was obtained by modification of cotton fabric with DBD and silver ions, where value of resistivity dropped from G Omega to a several dozens of M Omega.

AB - In this work, a possibility to use atmospheric pressure plasma treatment to clean cotton fibers surface was investigated. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operating in air was used as plasma source. After plasma treatment, cotton fibers were characterized using several surface techniques: SEM, XPS, ATR-FTIR and zeta potential measurement; also wettability was evaluated using capillary height measurement. Results of investigation showed that plasma treatment primarily affects cuticle and primary wall of cotton which provides cleaning of the fibers surface. This caused increase of polar groups accessibility and better wettability of cotton samples. An attempt has been made to locate influence of plasma treatment on different structural layers of cotton fibers using different surface techniques. In addition, surface charge was investigated through measuring streaming potential and a connection was established between zeta potential and plasma treatment time. Furthermore, it was shown that measuring of zeta potential could be used as an additional technique to track changes and elucidate mechanisms of plasma treatment influence on cotton fibers.

AB - Plasma treatment of viscose cellulose fabric was performed using the atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in nitrogen. Samples were treated using nonthermal plasma, and change of sorption properties with plasma energy density was investigated. It was found that using low energy of discharge, modified viscose samples become less hydrophilic and their wettability is significantly reduced. The observed hydrophobic effect was investigated and confirmed throughout series of experiments, by measuring a change in wetting time and in the level of aqueous liquid repellency. Structural changes were monitored using SEM, AFM, and XPS. It was established that increase of roughness combined with removal of hydrophilic polar groups from the surface of cellulose using plasma represents a novel approach to impart hydrophobicity onto hydrophilic textile. An additional binding of copper ions to nitrogen DBD treated cellulose produces a cross-linking effect, i.e., an occupation of remaining hydrophilic groups on the fabric surface and provides so called "petal effect'' where drops of water stick to the fabric surface when the fabric is tilted for 1808. This novel procedure for obtaining hydrophobic cellulose could be used for a preparation of special protective textile materials with cost and time effective methods and chemicals.

AB - Viscose fibers were treated with atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma obtained in nitrogen in order to activate the fiber surface prior to sorption of the divalent ions Ca2+ and Cu2+. Methylene blue sorption was used for estimation of carboxyl group formation on the surface after DBD plasma treatment, through the degree of fabric staining (K/S). Sorption of divalent ions was performed from solutions of each individual ion and from solutions of calcium and copper in succession onto untreated and plasma-treated viscose samples. The quantity of sorbed metal was determined from the neutralization and iodometric titration method. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis was used for fiber morphology and surface characterization before and after plasma treatment, and after metal ions sorption. Experiments revealed copper microparticles formation on the fiber surface when sorption of copper was performed on samples with bonded calcium. Further analysis confirmed that for growth of copper particles, both calcium ions and nitrogen DBD plasma pretreatments are necessary.

AB - Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have been functionalized by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in air. The extent of functionalization of MWCNTs and GNPs reaches a maximum at the delivered discharge energy of 720 and 240J mg(-1), respectively. Further exposure to plasma leads to reduction of functional groups from the surface of the treated nanomaterials. It has also been demonstrated that DBD plasma does not produce dramatic structural changes in MWCNTs, while flakes of the treated GNPs become thinner and smaller in the lateral size. Conductive thin films, obtained by drop casting a solution of the treated nanomaterials in N-methyl-1-pyrrolidone on poly(methyl methacrylate) substrate, show significantly lower sheet resistance.

AB - In this work, the effect of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in ambient air on preparation of antimicrobial viscose fabric was studied. DBD plasma treatment was applied under constant discharge power and different exposure times. Vertical wicking test was used to evaluate optimal conditions for plasma treatment of viscose in order to increase fabrics' wettability and consequently improve sorption properties. Investigation of aging effect of plasma treatment revealed that there was no significant change in wettability of viscose samples 21 days after plasma treatment, which suggests good durability of treatment. After DBD plasma treatment, fabrics were modified with silver and copper ions in order to impart antimicrobial properties on viscose fabric. Viscose samples, modified with Ag (I) and Cu (II) ions immediately and 1, 7, 14 and 21 days after DBD treatment were tested in vitro against microorganisms S. aureus, E. coli and C. albicans using agar diffusion test. Obtained results showed that modification with DBD, prior to sorption of Ag (I) and Cu (II) ions, leads to improvement of antimicrobial activity of viscose samples, with a possibility to provide specific activity against different microorganisms by altering the days after DBD treatment prior ions sorption.

AB - Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) pretreatments in air, nitrogen and oxygen plasma of viscose and cotton fabrics with subsequent immobilization of silver were studied. Surface activation of treated fibers was evaluated through subsequent sorption of silver from aqueous AgNO3 solution, after which changes in the surface morphology were monitored and quantity of silver deposition on fabric was measured. The plasma treatment was done in volume DBD discharge with the gap distance between electrodes of 0.5 and 2 mm. Depending on the gas used in pretreatment, significant difference in the way silver bonds to the textile surface was found. Nitrogen plasma pretreatment with gap distance of 0.5 mm led to the homogeneous fiber coating by silver nanoparticles with average size up to 300 nm estimated by SEM, while fibers treated in oxygen plasma adsorbed silver in a form of ions. The plasma pretreatment in air leads to changes that contain features of fibers treated in both nitrogen and oxygen DBD plasma. Distinct difference of used configuration of the plasma source is a use of gap distance 0.5 mm, which is in order of textile thickness. Observed results allow us to report a new way how to immobilize silver nanoparticles onto textile fibers using plasma pretreatment with subsequent sorption of silver from aqueous solution.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine and compare the potentials of two different ambient air plasma treatments: volume dielectric barrier discharge and diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge, for the activation of polypropylene (PP) nonwovens surface. This was done in order to enhance the deposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto PP surface. AuNPs were attached onto PP surface from colloidal solution prepared without stabilizers. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, water absorption, and AuNPs uptake were used to assess the surface changes due to the plasma treatment, and to evaluate the durability of the achieved treatment effects. Finally, as a very important aspiration of the research, antibacterial activity of AuNPs loaded PP nonwovens against pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was evaluated in vitro. The plasma modified PP nonwovens have highly improved wetting and sorption properties. The PP nonwovens loaded with 17-62 mg/kg AuNPs exhibit antibacterial activity against tested pathogens. Surprisingly, this activity was enhanced by the first sample rinsing.

AB - Decolorization of reactive textile dyes Reactive Black 5, Reactive Blue 52, Reactive Yellow 125 and Reactive Green 15 was studied using advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in a non-thermal plasma reactor, based on coaxial water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Used initial dye concentrations in the solution were 40.0 and 80.0 mg/L. The effects of different initial pH of dye solutions, and addition of homogeneous catalysts (H2O2, Fe2+ and Cu2+) on the decolorization during subsequent recirculation of dye solution through the DBD reactor, i.e. applied energy density (45-315 kJ/L) were studied. Influence of residence time was investigated over a period of 24 h. Change of pH values and effect of pH adjustments of dye solution after each recirculation on the decolorization was also tested. It was found that the initial pH of dye solutions and pH adjustments of dye solution after each recirculation did not influence the decolorization. The most effective decolorization of 97% was obtained with addition of 10 mM H2O2 in a system of 80.0 mg/L Reactive Black 5 with applied energy density of 45 kJ/L, after residence time of 24 h from plasma treatment. Toxicity was evaluated using the brine shrimp Artemia sauna as a test organism.

AB - In this paper we present experimental results of the decolorization of four commercial reactive azo dyes using falling film DBD reactor. In this reactor water forms a falling film which is in direct contact with plasma. Water samples containing 40 mg/L of dye were passed from one to seven times through the plasma region of the DBD reactor. Kinetic of the dye decolorization was monitored using spectrophotometer. The dependence of the decolorization on the system parameter solution pH value was investigated. For each dye decolorization has similar kinetics for all three starting solution pH values.

AB - The preparation of antimicrobial silver-loaded cotton/polyester fabrics has been carried out by DBD surface activation followed by silver sorption from aqueous silver nitrate solution. A series of DBD fabric treatments was performed in order to determine the most suitable experimental conditions for the fabric surface activation. The capillarity, silver ion uptake, and copper number were used to assess the surface changes on the fabrics. An effective process has been developed to obtain antimlicrobial silver-loaded Co/PES fabrics. The antimicrobial activity of the silver-loaded fabrics against different pathogens was evaluated in vitro. The quantity of bonded silver ions is enough to develop desirable antimicrobial activity in the Co/PES fabrics.

AB - The objective of this research was to impart the additional value on cotton/polyester (Co/PES) fabrics (i.e. antimicrobial properties) to improve the quality of life and thus to tap new markets with the product. In this paper, silver ions were incorporated in Co/PES fabrics by chemisorptions into the fabric previously treated in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). A series of the DBD fabric treatments were done in order to determine the most suitable experimental conditions for the DBD activation of the fabric surface, while the optimal conditions for silver ions sorption by Co/PES fabrics were determined by changing sorption conditions. The antimicrobial Co/PES fabrics prepared by dielectric barrier discharge mediated silver deposition show an antimicrobial activity against tested pathogens: S. aureus, E. coli, and C. albicans under in vitro conditions. The obtained results confirm the practicability of the plasma modification process and furthermore show that with some delays in the next step, i.e. silver ion sorption, we can get the increase in the amount of the sorbed silver ions; the maximum sorption capacity of modified Co/PES fabrics was 0.135 mmol of Ag+ ions per gram of a fabric.

AB - The influence of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the physico-chemical properties of hemp fibres was studied in this paper. Plasma-modification of hemp fibres was performed at atmospheric pressure. The source of the DBD was developed in the Quantum Optics Laboratory of the Faculty of Physics in Belgrade as a device prototype with plane-parallel geometry, for the continuous plasma-modification or treatment of textile materials. The capillary rise method was applied to evaluate the improvement in water uptake of the DBD treated hemp fibres. The plasma-modified hemp fibres have highly improved wetting properties without changing physico-mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation).
