AB - The adsorption performance of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) alumina doped with iron oxide, and subsequently modified with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, was used for enhanced Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ removal. The phase composition and the structural and surface/textural properties of the obtained adsorbents were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, thermogravimetry, Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy, specific surface area of the samples and point of zero charge determination. Adsorption of selected cations was examined in the batch conditions using different contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperatures. Different models of the adsorption isotherms were used for determination of the adsorption capacities, in which the best fit of Freundlich and Langmuir model was obtained for FeAl2O3, that is, Freundlich model for FeAl(2)O(3)APTES. A significant increase of adsorption capacities: from 44.21 to 51.66 mg g(-1) for Pb2+, 25.69 to 32.96 mg g(-1) for Cd2+ and 19.48 to 24.64 mg g(-1) for Ni2+ was obtained for FeAl2O3 and FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, respectively, which indicated the significance of the macroporous structure of 3DOM alumina and subsequent amino-terminal modification. The values of the correlation coefficient (R-2) suggested that pseudo-second kinetic model best describes Pb2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ adsorption on FeAl(2)O(3)APTES, and Cd2+ and Ni2+ onto FeAl2O3, while second kinetic model gave the highest correlation coefficients for Pb2+ adsorption on FeAl2O3.

AB - Background/Aim. The northern part of Kosovo was one of the largest lead and zinc production industries in Europe. Special attention has been paid to the landfill sites of these metals remained after past industrial activities. The inhabitants of Roma camps in this area are collecting led waste they process by crushing and melting in their shacks in primitively organized working environments. Because of all the aforementioned it was necessary to examine the concentration of blood lead level (BLL) in the children aged less than 6 years inhabiting this area, especially taking care of blood analysis of children living in Roma camps. Methods. The study was conducted in the municipality of Leposavić, Province Kosovo and Metohija, Serbia. Totally 78 subjects participated in the study. All the subjects were divided into two groups: the group I consisting of 42 children who lived in the Romas camp, and the group II with 36 children from a city kindergarten. Based on the mathematical model WRPLOT we found out that both groups of patients were in the low risk zone for industrial contamination exposure. Blood analysis was done according to the protocol provided by ESA Lead Care. Results. The average age of participants in the study was 4.60 ± 1.63 years. The mean BBL in the children from the group 1 was 19.11 µg/dL and from the group 2 4.87 µg/dL. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean values of BBL between the groups (U = 39, p lt 0.001). All of the children from the group 1 had BBL greater than 5 µg/dL in comparison to 38.9% of the children from the group 2 (χ2 = 35.75, p lt 0.001). Conclusion. Although both groups were located outside the zone of direct spread of pollution, the results indicate high concentrations of lead in blood of all the examined children. The concentration was higher in the children who lived in the area in which illegal processing of lead waste took place.

AB - This chapter presents a case study of a toxic Planktothrix rubescens bloom in the Serbian reservoir Vrutci used as the water supply for the city of Užice. Chemical cyanotoxin analyses were supplemented by Artemia salina bioassays, a questionnaire directed to the inhabitants of Užice, and epidemiological work. The overall aim of the studies was to assess the potential human health impacts of the toxic bloom.

AB - The river Veliki Lug originates under the Kosmaj, flows through the municipalities and settlements Sopot and Mladenovac, and flows into the river Kubršnica near village Ratari in the Smederevska Palanka municipality. Waters of the river Veliki Lug are polluted by industrial and sanitary waste waters as well as waters from many landfills at the coastal area. Before Mladenovac the waters of river Veliki Lug belong to the II water class, but after Mladenovac they belong to the IV water class. It is necessary to construct treatment plants for waste waters and sewer systems and also to remediate landfills at the coastal area.
