AB - This study focuses on the development of bioactive materials using environmentally friendly techniques, renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable polysaccharide, as well as natural bioactive compounds (NBCs) found in plant extracts. First, cornstarch aerogels with a porosity of 86 % and a specific surface area of 225 m2/g were produced via supercritical CO2- assisted drying. Further, thymol, citronellol, carvacrol, and eugenol were incorporated into the aerogels by supercritical CO2- assisted impregnation, which allowed variation in loadings of NBCs (12.8–17.6 %). Interaction between cornstarch aerogels and NBCs determined impregnation rate, pore wall thickness (in the range 18–95 nm), liquid absorption capacity (from 265 to 569 %), dehydration mass loss, and release in phosphate-buffered saline. Controlled release of NBCs was maintained over a 3-day period. Moreover, impregnated aerogels showed a significant antioxidant effect with the highest value for DPPH radical inhibition of 25.5 % determined for the aerogels impregnated with eugenol. Notable antimicrobial activity against tested Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi was also observed, being the highest for thymol-loaded aerogel with the diameter of the inhibition zones of up to 37.5 mm. This work shows a promising green approach for the production of bioactive two-component starch-based materials for potential applications in skin infection treatment.

AB - The surfaces of natural (NZ) and zeolite/iron oxyhydroxide composite (ZFe) samples were analysed by means of inverse gas chromatography (IGC) using the adsorption data of organic non-polar and polar probes, in the infinite and finite-dilution regimes, in the temperature range 483-513 K. The dispersive components of the free energy of adsorption, γS, determined by the Gray method, decreased with increasing temperature for both zeolites. The specific interactions were characterised by the specific free adsorption energy change, ΔGaS, the specific enthalpy change of adsorption, ΔHaS, as well as the donor and acceptor interaction parameters (KA, KD) and the basic character of the NZ and ZFe was evidenced. The adsorption isotherms of n-hexane, benzene, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were determined under finite surface coverage and used to estimate the specific surface area and the adsorption energy distribution. The adsorption capacity of the ZFe was higher than for NZ for all the investigated adsorbates. The specific surface areas and pore size distributions were also determined using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, i.e., the BET method. It was observed that the nature of the adsorbate and the properties of the solid surface of the initial and modified samples governed the uptake of adsorbates.

AB - Kaolinite/illite (KUb) and sepiolite (SEP) clays were used to study Cr(III) adsorption removal from aqueous solutions so that they could be utilized after saturation for ceramic manufacturing. SEP had a larger specific surface area and a higher PZC than KUb. The removal of Cr(III) was evaluated using a batch equilibration procedure at pHi = 4 and pHi = 6. Fast removal kinetics were observed for both clays. Maximum removal capacity was determined by changing the concentration of Cr(III) while keeping the concentration of clay constant and by altering the amount of clay while keeping the concentration of Cr(III) constant. In all situations, SEP had greater capacity than KUb, and capacity was greater for both clays at higher pHi. Not only did the pHi impact the removal capacity and efficiency, but so did the pH during adsorption and the initial concentration of Cr(III). Because of the higher PZC, the pHf for SEP was higher for the same pHi. The higher the pH and Cr(III) concentration, the higher the probability of Cr(OH)3 precipitation and the higher the removal capacity. Dried saturated clays were uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1000 °C for 2 h. The densities of the sintered materials were nearly identical to those of pure clay-based materials, but the compressive strengths were higher, which is significant for the use of saturated clays as raw materials in ceramic manufacturing. Leaching of Cr from SEP-based material was significantly higher than from KUb-based material probably due to the presence of CaCO3 in the SEP.

AB - The sepiolite/ZrO2 composites were prepared by sepiolite (Sep) modification with zirconium propoxide in toluene at room temperature for 24 h (Sep–ZrI) or 95 °C for 4 h (sample Sep–ZrII). The efficiency of the obtained composites for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions at initial pH = 4 and pH = 8 was investigated. Characterization of the samples shows that synthesis at a higher temperature for a shorter time provides a slightly higher content of amorphous Zr phase, which is deposited on the sepiolite fibers as a thin layer and agglomerated nanoparticles. Compared to Sep, the composites have a lower point of zero charge and higher specific surface area and pore volume. The adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo second-order model. The adsorption capacities of the composites are approximately the same at both initial pH and higher at initial pH = 4 than at pH = 8. The XPS and ATR-FTIR of Sep–ZrI before and after adsorption identifies the formation of inner-sphere complexes as the mechanism of phosphate adsorption. The slow release during desorption with NaOH solution confirms the strong bonds of the phosphates with the surface of the composites.

AB - Waste vitreous enamels from the heating device production process were used for partial replacement of cement in the mortar and concrete production industry. This waste, due to the high content of heavy metals, is classified as hazardous waste. At the same time, waste vitreous enamels possess pozzolanic activity and belong to class 15 (WEP—generated during the production process of heating devices, premix technology), that is 5 (WETM—generated during the production process of heating devices, classic technology) of pozzolanic materials. The purpose of this research was to develop new composites from these wastes to reduce the deposition of the toxic compounds and reduce their environmental impact. The chemical and physical-chemical characterization and pozzolanic activity of the raw waste materials were studied by a mixture of complementary methods, as well as physical-mechanical characterization and a leaching test of mortar and concrete composites. The results indicate that the replacement of cement with WEP up to 30%, or with WETM up to 20% does not significantly affect the quality of concrete in comparison to the quality of the reference concrete prepared with 100% cement. The leaching test showed no significant release of toxic elements for both obtained composites.

AB - Nanomaterials based on metal–doped fluorapatite (FAP) have attracted considerable interest as potential next–generation antimicrobial agents. In this study, Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by a neutralization method at room temperature. Their structural, optical, antimicrobial, and hemcompatible properties have been investigated. XRD, FTIR, FESEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption studies indicate the formation of single–phase FAP mesoporous nanopowders, composed of rod–like particles. TEM images confirmed the formation of nanorodes with a length of 60 nm and a width of about 18 nm. Rietveld analysis shows that the Cu2+ ions preferentially substitute Ca2 (6 h) sites in the hexagonal fluorapatite crystal structure. Fluorescence spectroscopy accompanied by MCR–ALS method confirms substitution of Cu2+ ions in FAP crystal lattice with extracting additional d–d band transition at green color from FAP broadband self–activated luminescence in violet–blue color. Antimicrobial studies conducted on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus lysodeikticus showed that FAP nanopowder with the highest Cu2+ content have strong bacteriostatic action on Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain in mediums containing nutrition matters. In addition, this sample in comparison to pure FAP achieved a high percentage of relative reduction of bacterial population for all three species, being >90% in most cases. Fungistatic action is noticed too, throwgh the slowing down mycelium growth of fungus Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium roqueforti and reduction of sporulation of Aspergillus niger species. Cu2+–doped FAP nanocrystals shows a synergistic antimicrobial effect with Cu2+ and F− ions. Concerning the potential biomedical applications, the hemolysis ratios of the Cu2+–doped FAP samples were below 5%. The obtained results pointed out the possible use of the synthesized nanocrystals as broad–spectrum antimicrobial agents for various biomedical and health care preparations.

AB - Carbon materials of different structural and textural properties (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon cryogel, and carbonized hydrothermal carbon) were used as adsorbents for the removal of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol from aqueous solutions. Chemical modification and/or activation were applied to alter surface characteristics and to increase the adsorption and desorption efficiency of carbon materials. Surfaces of treated and untreated carbon materials were characterized through the examination of the textural properties, the nature of surface functional groups, and surface acidity. It was found that the adsorption capacity of tested carbon materials is not directly proportional to the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. However, a high ratio of surface mesoporosity affected the adsorption process most prominently, by increasing adsorption capacity and the rate of the adsorption process. Adsorption of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. Calculated mean adsorption energy values, along with the thermodynamic parameters, indicated that removal of selected hormones was dominated by the physisorption mechanism. High values of adsorption efficiency (88-100 %) and Langmuir adsorption capacities (29.45-194.7 mg/g) imply that examined materials, especially mesoporous carbon cryogel and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, can be used as powerful adsorbents for relatively fast removal of estrogen hormones from water.

AB - Ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotic is extensively used in daily life and can be detected in municipal and pharmaceutical wastewaters, as well as natural waters. In this study, natural mineral sepiolite (SEP), SEP modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bromide (HDAB) and SEP composites with graphene oxide (GO) were used as adsorbents for the removal of CIP from aqueous solutions. The composites were prepared at a mass ratio SEP to GO of 2 : 1, using SEP and SEP modified by [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxy-silane (APT). Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption were used to characterize the obtained adsorbents. The adsorption of CIP was investigated at the pH value close to pH of natural waters. The concentration of CIP in aqueous solution was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. GO showed the highest adsorption capacity (~ 150 mg/g). The capacity of SEP was about 60 mg/g, while the SEP modification with HDAB has led to a decrease in the adsorption capacity (~ 35 mg/g). The composite SEP/GO showed the higher adsorption capacity (~ 110 mg/g) than the composite SEP-APT/GO (~ 40 mg/g). The capacity of the composite SEP/GO was higher than of mixture of SEP and GO, which indicated a certain degree of GO exfoliation and intecalation of sepiolie particles, as it was shown by X-ray diffraction. Equilibrium data for all adsorbents, except for HDAB modified sepiolite, fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model.

AB - Outbreak of surgical infections and bacterial resistance against synthetic antibiotic has prompted research towards development of antibacterial medical devices. For that purpose, absorbable surgical sutures were impregnated with natural compound thymol using an environmentally friendly medium. The supercritical solvent impregnation process was performed at 35 degrees C and 10 MPa during 1, 2, 3 and 6 h, resulting in thymol loadings of 3.9-5.6%. All tested samples expressed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Release tests in PBS at 37 degrees C showed that impregnated material released loaded thymol in a gradual manner. While sutures impregnated during 6 h released complete amount of loaded thymol during 6 days, shorter impregnation process resulted in sutures that retained significant thymol amounts (similar to 20-40%) after 10 days of release test. The effect of proposed process on final material properties and its application were explained in detail using characterization techniques SEM, FTIR, DSC and DMA.

AB - In this paper, the capillary rise and sorption ability of hemp fibers oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate were studied, with the aim to get more insight into the changes in the structure of hemp fibers caused by oxidation, and to compare the influence of applied oxidative agents on hemp fibers. Capillary rise was presented as a function of a liquid rise height vs times, with determined all three capillary coefficients, while sorption ability was determined as water retention values and moisture sorption. For structural analysis of the samples the ATR-FTIR technique was used. Also, the amount of aldehyde and carboxyl groups and the lignin content in oxidized fibers were determined. The surface fibers morphology was observed by FESEM. In all oxidized hemp fibers an increase in capillarity was obtained for both oxidizing agents (33-75 mm for H2O2, and 40-114 mm for KMnO4), compared to 31 mm for unmodified fibers, but decreased sorption ability. Application of both oxidative agents, were successful for introduction of functional groups into oxidized fibers, for reduction of the amount of non-cellulosic substances, as well as moisture sorption. Simultaneously, the fibers became finer, cleaner, whiter, softer and more suitable for further processing, while, generally, higher influence on changes into oxidized hemp fibers was achieved by oxidation with KMnO4, compared to oxidation with H2O2.

abstract = "In this paper, the capillary rise and sorption ability of hemp fibers oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate were studied, with the aim to get more insight into the changes in the structure of hemp fibers caused by oxidation, and to compare the influence of applied oxidative agents on hemp fibers. AB - An emerging technology of active packaging enables prolongation of food shelf life by limiting the oxygen transfer and the reactivity of free radicals, which both destruct food freshness. In this work, Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and evaluated as an enforcement of alginate food packaging film. Pure phase Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles had an average particle size of 44 nm and rhombohedral morphology. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles induce no cell damage of human Caco-2 epithelial cells and show no inhibitory effect towards growth of a panel of bacterial strains, suggesting good biocompatibility. Films obtained by incorporation of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles into alginate using the solvent casting method show no migration of iron or titanium ions from films to food simulants again suggesting their safety as a packaging material. Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles also showed strong antioxidant efficiency as determined using the DPPḢ assay, and confirmed further in a preservation test on fresh fruit.

AB - Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were employed as a sorbent for solid-phase extraction of estrogen hormones (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol) from water solution. The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized by choosing an appropriate mass of the sorbent, volume, and initial pH of hormone water solution, as well as by choosing an appropriate organic solvent for extraction. Based on the obtained hormone recoveries, the following SPE conditions were chosen as optimal: 100 cm3 of hormone water solution at initial pH adjusted to 10; 20 mg of the sorbent; and methanol-dichloromethane mixture as elution solvent. Recoveries obtained under the optimal conditions ranged from 70.56 % for estrone, to 81.23 % for 17α-ethinylestradiol, with a relative standard deviation from 9.92 to 18.74 %.

AB - The wide use of antibiotics, the increase in chemical industry and traffic, as well as the medical industry resulted in formation of wastewater, which contains complexes of heavy metals and antibiotics. Earlier researches have shown that clay minerals had a significant large adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions, and recently examinations are focused on investigation of the possibility of treatment of water with presence of antibiotics and heavy metal ions. In this paper, the possibility of application of natural mineral sepolite for simultaneous removal of antibiotics of ciprofloxacin and copper ions from aqueous solutions. It was shown that at the initial pH of 6,0±0,1 presence of the copper ions (~ 20 mg/dm3) increased the adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin onto sepiolite, while the presence of ciprofloxacin, had no significant influence on the removal capacity of Cu2+ ions. The results of adsorption isotherms indicated significant adsorption capacity for both, ciprofloxacin and Cu2+ ions, ie. it was shown that natural mineral sepiolite was very effective adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of ciprofloxacin and Cu2+ ions as a significant water pollutants.

abstract = "The wide use of antibiotics, the increase in chemical industry and traffic, as well as the medical industry resulted in formation of wastewater, which contains complexes of heavy metals and antibiotics. The results of adsorption isotherms indicated significant adsorption capacity for both, ciprofloxacin and Cu2+ ions, ie. it was shown that natural mineral sepiolite was very effective adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of ciprofloxacin and Cu2+ ions as a significant water pollutants.",

AB - Applications of hemp fibers, as a promising natural material in the textile field, mostly require improved fiber properties. In this paper, the oxidation of hemp fibers with potassium permanganate was applied to reduce the amount of noncellulosic substances and moisture sorption; to introduce functional groups and increase capillarity; make fibers finer, softer and suitable for application in sport wears. The changes in sorption properties were characterized by capillary rise measurement and the ability of water retention and moisture sorption, while changes in mechanical properties were estimated by determination of tenacity and elongation of modified hemp fibers in comparison to the appropriate characteristic of unmodified fibers. ATR-FTIR, SEM techniques, and zeta potential measurement were used for the characterization of fiber structure, morphological and electrokinetic properties. We obtained a finer fiber with increased capillarity (up to 3.68 times) but reduced moisture sorption (down to 1.5 times) and water retention capacity (down to 2.8 times), with accomplished satisfactory preservation of mechanical properties. Obtained oxidized hemp fibers with attained features present a very suitable material for sportswear production. Additionally, in this paper, an improvement of the capillary rise measurement is given.

AB - The textile industry is one of the major pollutants of waterbodies with effluents high in biochemical and chemical oxygen demand values, high values of total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and low dissolved oxygen values along with strong color. The existence of a successful method for its decontamination would be beneficial. In this work, we synthesized sponge-like europium oxide (Eu2O3) using a template-directed route from carbon hollow spheres, obtained from glucose as a carbon source. The material synthesis method was done in an aqueous environment, without using any organic solvents. Electrochemical properties of the synthesized material were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrical impedance spectroscopy, while morphological characterization was done using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Eu2O3 were successfully immobilized at the surface of a screen-printed carbon electrode (Eu2O3/SPCE) using the drop-casting method. Finally, the prepared electrodes were tested toward the removal of Reactive Blue 52 (RB52) using electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). Important parameters, that is, the supporting electrolyte, its concentration, pH value, and the applied voltage, were optimized for RB52 degradation. The rate of removal was monitored spectrophotometrically and by high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). It was found that the proposed approach reaches complete decolorization of the RB52 solution after a 60-min treatment, at pH 5.6 of KC1 supporting electrolyte at a concentration of 0.05 M. Under optimal parameters, after 3 h of treatment, total organic carbon (TOC) was lowered by similar to 40%. The obtained results indicate that the proposed method may find potential application in EAOPs, considering electrode stability, durability, and efficiency and simplicity of the method.

AB - Nanostructured Fe2TiO5 (pseudobrookite), a mixed metal oxide material holds significant promise for utilization in energy and environmental applications. However, its full application is still hindered due to the difficulty to synthesize monophasic Fe2TiO5 with high crystallinity and a large specific surface area. Herein, Fe2TiO5 nanofibers were synthesized via a versatile and low-cost electrospinning method, followed by a calcination process at different temperatures. We found a significant effect of the calcination process and its duration on the crystalline phase in the form of either pseudobrookite or pseudobrookite-hematite-rutile and the morphology of calcined nanofibers. The crystallite size increased whereas the specific surface area decreased with an increase in calcination temperature. At higher temperatures, the growth of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and simultaneous coalescence of small particles was noted. The highest specific surface area was obtained for the sample calcined at 500 degrees C for 6 h (S-BET = 64.4 m(2) g(-1)). This work opens new opportunities in the synthesis of Fe2TiO5 nanostructures using the electrospinning method and a subsequent optimized calcination process for energy-related applications.

AB - The toxicity of hybrid nanoparticles, consisting of non-toxic components, zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs), and caffeic acid (CA), was examined against four different cell lines (HTR-8 SV/Neo, JEG-3, JAR, and HeLa). Stable aqueous ZrO2 sol, synthesized by forced hydrolysis, consists of 3-4 nm in size primary particles organized in 30-60 nm in size snowflake-like particles, as determined by transmission electron microscopy and direct light scattering measurements. The surface modification of ZrO2 NPs with CA leads to the formation of an interfacial charge transfer (ICT) complex followed by the appearance of absorption in the visible spectral range. The spectroscopic observations are complemented with the density functional theory calculations using a cluster model. The ZrO2 NPs and CA are non-toxic against four different cell lines in investigated concentration range. Also, ZrO2 NPs promote the proliferation of HTR-8 SV/Neo, JAR, and HeLa cells. On the other hand, hybrid ZrO2/CA NPs induced a significant reduction of the viability of the JEG-3 cells (39 %) for the high concentration of components (1.6 mM ZrO2 and 0.4 mM CA).

The ZrO2 NPs and CA are non-toxic against four different cell lines in investigated concentration range. Also, ZrO2 NPs promote the proliferation of HTR-8 SV/Neo, JAR, and HeLa cells. On the other hand, hybrid ZrO2/CA NPs induced a significant reduction of the viability of the JEG-3 cells (39 %) for the high concentration of components (1.6 mM ZrO2 and 0.4 mM CA).",

AB - Nanofibrillated films based on TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were applied to reduce the hydrophilic properties of paper. For this purpose, aqueous dispersions of nanofibrillated cellulose of different composition: 1 and 3% of nanofibrillated cellulose, up to 13% of CaCO3 and/or Al(OH)3, up to 20% of propane-1,2-diol (glycol), and up to 21% of TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were coated on the model paper, without additional adhesive. The pristine model paper and papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based composite films were characterized in terms of water absorptiveness by COBB method and water drop contact angle measurements. The surface appearance was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface chemistry by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform and attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR). Additionally, optical properties, i.e. measurement of reflection curves and CIE degrees of whiteness, were determined according to appropriate standards. For all papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based films, depending on the composition of the dispersions, a decrease in sorption properties was achieved, without changes in optical properties and surface morphology of the paper compared to the pristine paper.

AB - Steel production in electric arc furnaces yielding formation of two waste materials, toxic electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) and non-hazardous electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). EAFD presents a potential hazard to the environment as it is characterized by the presence of heavy metals. This study dealt with the synthesis and characterization of alkali activated slag cement (AAS) based on EAFS with addition of 1-7% of Zn-rich EAFD dopant. Effects of slag replacement with dust on the compressive strength, physico-chemical, mineralogical and morphological properties of AAS cement were evaluated. This replacement lead to the development of porosity of AAS matrix, and retardation of slag alkali activation which resulted in the weakening of the AAS structure and hence in compressive strength decrease as pure AAS cement compressive strength was 21.04 MPa while AAS doped with 7% of EAFD reached only 8.4 MPa. On the other hand, AAS doped with 5% of EAFD exhibited compressive strength of 13.82 MPa, making it is still suitable for construction purposes... Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) in high angle annular dark field (HAADF) mode, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations and standard EN 12457-2 leaching test provided information on the ability of AAS based on EAFS to fix Zn in AAS matrix.. The concentration of Zn in leachate of AAS cement doped with 5% of EAFD was 9.20 mg/kg which is below the limit prescribed for the granular waste acceptable at non-hazardous landfills according the European Directive 2003/33/CE.

AB - The present paper is focused on the development of a new environment-friendly methanolysis catalyst completely based on waste materials: lignite coal fly ash and chicken eggshells. A novel catalyst based on CaO supported on a fly ash-based zeolitic material (CaO/FA-ZM) was obtained from a cancrinite-sodalite group zeolite-like material (vishnevite type) and active CaO by alkali activation in a new miniature autoclave reactor system and hydration-dehydration. Agitation by rotation of the entire reaction mixture led to a more homogeneous zeolitic product and saved both time and energy. The obtained catalyst structure corresponds to gis-mondine and the crystallographic modification of calcium silicate (alpha'-dicalcium silicate) with deposited CaO. The characteristics of the synthesized catalyst were determined using ED-XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, Hg-porosimetry, N-2-physisorption, LDPSA, and Hammett indicators. The CaO/FA-ZM catalyst exhibited a high activity (97.8% of FAME for only 30 min) and stability (a negligible drop in activity in five consecutive cycles) in the methanolysis reaction under the optimal reaction conditions (temperature of 60 degrees C, methanol/oil molar ratio of 6:1, and catalyst concentration of 6 wt%). A kinetic study was performed using two different mechanisms: the irreversible pseudo-first-order reaction mechanism in two regimes (heterogeneous and homogeneous) and the changing mechanism combined with the triacylglycerol mass transfer limitation. Both models showed a satisfactory agreement between the experimental and predicted values of conversion degree (R-2 gt 0.93), confirming their validity for the CaO-based heterogeneously catalyzed methanolysis. The values of the activation energy calculated for both mechanisms were 67.17 and 58.03 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

AB - This paper outlines the production of an inorganic polymer/geopolymer using a metakaolin by an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean technology to conserve natural environment and resources. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of geopolymerization of metakaolin is investigated. Also, process of aging time of geopolymer is followed by several analytical methods. The structure of metakaolin and metakaolin based geopolymers and their physicochemical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and after 28 days scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was applied for the surface characterization of the samples. A shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X (X=Al, Si, Na...) bands as the molarity of activator increasing during geopolymerization process was observed by FTIR. Mass spectra of geopolymers were characterized by MALDI TOF mass spectrometer. Structural reorganization of geopolymer samples occurs during the curing/aging in accordance with a geopolymerization mechanism.
