AB - Anode slime and tin precipitate as by-products of the electrorefining (ER) of non-standard anodes obtained after experimental smelting of waste electric and electronic equipment (e-waste), in addition to the base and precious metals, contains a significant amount of tin. Due to its presence as inert SnO(2)hydrate (beta metastannic acid) and its dissipation between slime and electrolyte, anode slime processing and metals valorization are difficult. This study aimed to investigate conditions under which efficient leaching of metastannic acid could be achieved to facilitate further metals valorization, especially precious metals. The investigation was performed using the by-products obtained from the ER of the non-standard Cu anodes produced by pyrometallurgical processing of e-waste. After detailed characterization of obtained products, the influence of various process parameters like temperature, acid concentration, leaching time, as well as the influence of reducing agent, sulfur compounds, and SnO(2)hydration rate on leaching efficiency was investigated. It was found that efficiency of 99% can be achieved by leaching the desulfurized tin precipitate sample in 6 M HCl at 90 degrees C for 90 min with the addition of Mg powder. The application of the tin removal process, described in this paper, contributes to efficient material flow management. [GRAPHICS] .

AB - Since most studies regarding immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) are focused on the properties and composition of its essential oil, the aim of this study was to develop edible films based on immortelle water extract. Alginate and pectin combined with various proteins served as carriers for the formulation of biodegradable films and hydrogel particles. Films with different biopolymers and incorporated hydrogel particles were prepared by casting method and hydrogel particles were produced by ionic gelation. The bioactive profile (the content of total (TPC) and specific polyphenols, hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAC) and antioxidant capacity (AC)) of the developed matrices was characterized using spectrophotometric methods and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Zeta-potential and rheological properties of alginate- and pectin-based film-forming solutions and physicochemical (color, particle size, film thickness, dry matter content) and sensory properties of the developed particles and films were evaluated. The highest TPC (31.31 mg GAE/g sample) and HCAC (27.20 mg CAE/g sample) as well as the highest AC (0.15 mmol TE/g sample) was determined in pectin-based films. The addition of proteins decreased the content of the examined bioactive parameters, while the addition of hydrogel particles altered their physico-chemical properties. The obtained results indicate a great application potential of the developed biodegradable matrices.

AB - Due to a high content of rutin (2-10%), dried buckwheat leaf and flower (DBLF) formulations were shown to be efficient in the treatment of vascular diseases. In order to find a cost effective way for the extraction of antioxidants, the effects of ethanol/water ratio and temperature on the extraction efficiency of phenolic compounds and the mechanisms of antioxidant action of the extracts were tested. Extraction with ethanol/water mixture (80:20, v/v) for 24 h at room temperature, after the mixture was just brought to boil was demonstrated to be an efficient and cheap way for obtaining a high yield of rutin (49.94 +/- 0.623 mg/g DBLF). The most abundant phenolic compounds in DBLF extracts were rutin and chlorogenic acid. Flavonoids, especially rutin, were shown to be the most responsible for the antioxidant activity in all investigated lipid model systems, acting as free radical scavengers, electron-donating substances and chelators of iron ions. In beta-carotene bleaching tests, the extracts with the highest activity were as efficient as BHT (butylated hydroxytoluole). Regarding the results of antihemolytic and Schaal oven tests, the extracts demonstrated remarkable ability to inhibit the oxidative destruction of erythrocytes and to prolong the beginning of the oxidation process in sunflower oil.

AB - High-strength Al-Mg alloys have a propensity toward hot fracture and failure by alligatoring during hot rolling. In this study the effect of homogenization conditions on the susceptibility of an Al-5.1Mg-0.7Mn alloy toward alligatoring was investigated. It was found that the plates homogenized in a temperature range of 460-520 degrees C were prone toward alligatoring, but once homogenized at 550 degrees C they were not prone toward it any longer. The characterization of the fracture showed a predominance of the intergranular ductile fracture, but the type of the constitutive particles filling the voids changed with the homogenization regime. Grain decohesion and grain-boundary embrittlement show that certain thermal treatments resulted in a microstructure that promoted slip localization.

AB - Influence of annealing temperature on beta-(Al3Mg2) phase precipitation and corrosion properties of sensitised Al-6.8wt% Mg alloy is investigated. Sensitisation of specimens annealed at 320 degrees C results in IGC and SCC susceptibility. Microstructural characterization shows fine precipitation of Mg-rich phase forming nearly continuous film at grain boundaries, despite small precipitated fraction (0.5%), and grain boundary faceting. Sensitised specimens annealed at 265 degrees C are IGC susceptible, but SCC resistant. Precipitation at grain boundaries is discrete, although the precipitated fraction is greater (3%) than in specimens annealed at 320 degrees C. Potentiodynamic measurements show that of all measured parameters, charge density is in the strongest correlation with the NAMLT and SSRT results.

AB - In this study the influence of the microstructure of Al-5.1Mg-0.7Mn alloy on the propensity towards an alligatoring failure was evaluated. The morphology of the constituent particles appears to be the key factor, with dissolution and fragmentation of fibrous Mg-Si-Sr and transformation of the Al-6(Fe,Mn) into more compact shapes taking place at homogenization temperatures above 520 degrees C, contributing to improved ductility and diminished propensity towards alligatoring. Homogenization at temperatures below 500 degrees C gave rise to a non-uniform precipitation of the dispersoids. Such a microstructure favored localized slip that induced stress concentration at the grain boundaries and triggered grain boundary embrittlement.

AB - Exfoliation and pitting corrosion were tested on an AA5083-type alloy sheet, after applying different thermo-mechanical treatments. Hot-rolled plates were laboratory cold rolled with 16-54 % reductions, and subsequently annealed for 2 h in the temperature range from 220 degrees C to 280 degrees C. The performed tests have shown that an unacceptable exfoliation and a corrosion susceptibility were developed after the 54 % deformation and low-temperature annealing at 220 degrees C. However, no severe exfoliation was observed after the cold rolling with low deformations, independent of the applied annealing temperature. The pitting corrosion was less agressive, and the highest degree of the pitting attack was not experienced for the tested alloy. A slight tendency to pitting was detected after the high cold deformation and high-temperature annealing for the samples with recrystallized but significantly flattened grain structures.

abstract = "Exfoliation and pitting corrosion were tested on an AA5083-type alloy sheet, after applying different thermo-mechanical treatments. A slight tendency to pitting was detected after the high cold deformation and high-temperature annealing for the samples with recrystallized but significantly flattened grain structures.",

AB - In this study, the effect of thermomechanical treatment on intergranular corrosion (IGC) susceptibility of the Zn-modified Al-5.1 wt pct Mg-0.7 wt pct Mn alloy plates was investigated. The specimens underwent varied amounts of cold work, while final annealing was conducted in the 493 K to 533 K (220 A degrees C to 260 A degrees C) temperature range. It was shown that the extent of cold work, especially at lower temperatures of treatment, had a profound effect on the corrosion resistance of the alloy. Such observation was in direct correlation with the morphology of precipitated ternary grain boundary phase (Al-Mg-Zn). Microstructural characterization showed that, depending on the amount of cold work, different deformation substructures were created, which, in turn, influenced kinetics and the mechanism of precipitation. Wetting of the grain boundaries by the ternary grain boundary phase (Al-Mg-Zn) was a signature of the IGC susceptible state and occurred in the specimens that were subjected to a lower degree of cold work. The specimens that underwent a higher degree of cold work (over 30 pct) showed superior corrosion resistance as a result of ternary grain boundary phase (Al-Mg-Zn) precipitation in the form of discrete particles at the grain boundaries as well as in grain interiors.
