AB - Background This study provides an insight into the impact of ultrasound-assisted extraction with water as solvent (UAEW) and extraction by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) with 5% EtOH on antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activity in regard to the chemical profile of the edible and medicinal mushroom,Pleurotus pulmonarius. Results Extraction efficiency was between 0.36% and 63.32%, depending on the extraction technique. The main compounds in the extracts were fatty acids. Supercritical CO(2)extraction with co-solvent was the most suitable method for obtaining extracts that were rich in ergosterol content, reaching a value of 40.1 mg g(-1). The UAEW of crude mushroom powder ensured the highest yield, as well as the extracts with best antioxidative activity. The measurements of enzyme inhibitory activity revealed that all types of investigated extracts exhibited only tyrosinase and amylase inhibition at a significant level. Conclusion Based on our results, the extraction methods significantly affected the chemical profile and bioactivity ofP. pulmonarius.

AB - Lignite coal fly ash (FA) from a domestic thermal power plant was converted into a pure cancrinite zeolitic material (ZMFA) using a novel, custom-made, rotating autoclave reactor system by a short-term alkali activation process. The obtained ZMFA was used as catalyst support of calcium oxide as an active component derived from waste chicken eggshells (ES). The ZMFA supported calcium oxide catalyst (xCaO/ZMFA) was synthesized by means of the ultrasound-assisted method. The influence of different concentrations of dispersed calcium oxide (x = 5–20 wt%) over ZMFA and thermal treatment at different temperatures (450–600 °C) were studied. The structural and morphological characterization showed that the original cancrinite structure was preserved. The basicity and textural properties indicated the presence of strong active sites in a well-defined pore network suitable for the reactions of bulky organic compounds such as triacylglycerols (TAGs). The highest activity (96.5% of fatty acid methyl esters) in the methanolysis of sunflower oil was achieved with the 20CaO/ZMFA catalyst under reaction conditions: temperature of 60 °C, methanol/oil molar ratio of 12:1, catalyst concentration of 4 wt%, and reaction time of 2 h. It was found that the optimal calcination temperature of the catalyst precursor was 550 °C. At calcination temperatures above 550 °C, the melting of the glassy phase became more intense whereby the molten phase partially reacted with calcium oxide forming the catalytically inactive calcium silicate compounds (wollastonite, larnite, etc.). The rate constants of the two tested kinetic models were correlated with the concentrations of active calcium oxide. The MRPD of both models was low indicating their reliability.

AB - Different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) of triethanolamine (TEOA) and oxalic acid (OA), glacial acetic acid (AA), L-(+)-lactic acid (LA), oleic acid (OLA), glycerol (G), ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PEG), choline chloride (ChCl) or 1,3-dimethylurea (DMU) were prepared and characterized regarding their physicochemical (density, viscosity, electrical conductivity, refractive index, coefficient of volume expansion, molecular volume, lattice energy and heat capacity) properties over the temperature range of 293.15-363.15 K at 101.325 kPa. For all tested DESs, the density, viscosity and refractive index decreased with rising temperature, while the electrical conductivity increased. The temperature dependence of viscosity and electrical conductivity are described by the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher equations. The viscosity and molar conductivity, which exhibited a linear behaviour, were correlated by the fractional Walden rule. Besides, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to study the functional groups of these DESs while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) provided the information about their stability. The tested DESs of TEOA possess desirable properties for use in various industrial processes, such as extractions, separations, chemical technology and biotechnology.

AB - This study is aimed to evaluate the possibility of lemon peel, as an agro-industrial waste, to remove Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+ from single aqueous solutions and mining wastewater. For this purpose, the influence of various parameters: sorption time, initial pH solution, initial metal ion concentration and a dose of sorbent on the sorption process were studied in batch experiments. The experimental equilibrium data have been analysed utilizing linearized forms of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The Langmuir isotherm provided the best theoretical correlation of the experimental equilibrium data for Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+, with the maximum sorption capacities of 4.40, 5.03 and 4.52 mg g(-1), respectively. The percentage of targeted ions removal from single aqueous solutions was 92.9 % (Zn2+), 84.5 % (Fe2+) and 78.2 % (Mn2+). Regarding the sorption capability of lemon peel in mining wastewater, the maximum removal of Fe2+, Zn2+ and Mn2+ from mining wastewater was 49.62, 33.97 and 9.11 %, respectively. In addition, the potential reusability of the lemon peel as sorbent was investigated through desorption study in 0.1M of CH3COO4, HCl and HNO3 solution. The highest rate of desorption was achieved in 0.1 M HCl solution, reached a value of 55.19 % for Mn2+ and 37.24 % for Zn2+, while for Fe2+ the highest value of 25.82 % was achieved in 0.1M HNO3 solution.

Films of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with 5 wt% of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), denoted as PLA-5, were loaded with thymol, carvacrol and their mixture using supercritical CO2 at 40 °C and 10 MPa for 5 h, with 27.53, 21.18, and 21.49 % of loading achieved, respectively. Morphological, structural and mechanical properties of the obtained PLA-5 films were analyzed. The highest total polyphenol content and the best antioxidant activity as well as good storage stability, acceptable physical properties and the lowest release rate (44.51 mg/L released after 6 weeks) were observed for PLA-5 film loaded with thymol and carvacrol mixture. Mixture of thymol and carvacrol loaded into PLA-5 film showed synergy and low percentage of migration into distilled water, revealing great potential for application as a food packaging material with aim to decrease requirements for amount of the active ingredients.

AB - The present paper is focused on the development of a new environment-friendly methanolysis catalyst completely based on waste materials: lignite coal fly ash and chicken eggshells. A novel catalyst based on CaO supported on a fly ash-based zeolitic material (CaO/FA-ZM) was obtained from a cancrinite-sodalite group zeolite-like material (vishnevite type) and active CaO by alkali activation in a new miniature autoclave reactor system and hydration-dehydration. Agitation by rotation of the entire reaction mixture led to a more homogeneous zeolitic product and saved both time and energy. The obtained catalyst structure corresponds to gis-mondine and the crystallographic modification of calcium silicate (alpha'-dicalcium silicate) with deposited CaO. The characteristics of the synthesized catalyst were determined using ED-XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, Hg-porosimetry, N-2-physisorption, LDPSA, and Hammett indicators. The CaO/FA-ZM catalyst exhibited a high activity (97.8% of FAME for only 30 min) and stability (a negligible drop in activity in five consecutive cycles) in the methanolysis reaction under the optimal reaction conditions (temperature of 60 degrees C, methanol/oil molar ratio of 6:1, and catalyst concentration of 6 wt%). A kinetic study was performed using two different mechanisms: the irreversible pseudo-first-order reaction mechanism in two regimes (heterogeneous and homogeneous) and the changing mechanism combined with the triacylglycerol mass transfer limitation. Both models showed a satisfactory agreement between the experimental and predicted values of conversion degree (R-2 gt 0.93), confirming their validity for the CaO-based heterogeneously catalyzed methanolysis. The values of the activation energy calculated for both mechanisms were 67.17 and 58.03 kJ mol(-1), respectively.

AB - The catalytic activity of the walnut shell ash was investigated in the biodiesel production by the sunflower oil methanolysis. The catalyst was characterized by the TG-DTA, XRD, Hg porosimetry, Ny physisorption, SEM, and Hammett method. In addition, the effects of the catalyst loading and the methanolto-oil molar ratio on the methyl esters synthesis were tested at the reaction temperature of 60 degrees C. The walnut shell ash provided a very fast reaction and a high FAME content (over 98%). As the reaction occurred in the absence of triacylglycerols mass transfer limitation, the pseudo-first-order model was employed for describing the kinetics of the reaction. The catalyst was successfully reused four times after the regeneration of the catalytic activity by recalcination at 800 degrees C.

AB - The green CaO/Zeolite catalyst for methanolysis of fatty oils was synthesized entirely from the waste materials. CaO derived from chicken eggshell was loaded onto fly ashbased zeolite catalyst carrier by the wet impregnation method using an alcohol solution. The effect of thermal activation at different temperatures ranging from 450 to 600 °C on catalytic activity was studied. The precursor and catalyst samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and Hg-porosimetry techniques. The catalytic tests were performed in a stirred batch reactor at the following reaction conditions: 60 °C - reaction temperature, 12:1 - methanol/oil molar ratio, and 4 wt% - catalyst concentration. The obtained results showed that the synthesized CaO/Zeolite catalyst has preserved alumosilicate framework-cancrinite type [1], with uniformly distributed calcium oxide (CaO) on its surface (Fig. 1c). It is shown that the catalyst sample calcinated at 550 °C exhibited the highest FAME content of 96.46%, which was achieved in 2 h (Fig. 2). Increasing temperature of calcination above 550 °C led to the formation of inactive calcium alumosilicate forms causing a decrease in the FAME content.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful aminofunctionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer.

AB - In this study, unmodified lemon peel, as agro-industrial waste, was used to investigate removal efficiency of copper ions from aqueous solutions and mining wastewater. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time, metal ion concentration and dose of adsorbent on sorption were studied in batch experiments. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was evaluated to be 13.2 mg/g at optimum contact time of 15 min. The maximum removal of copper ions from mining-wastewater at natural pH (pH3) was 89%, indicating that lemon peel could be employed as an effective low-cost adsorbent for removal of copper ions from wastewater at acidic conditions.

AB - The powder mixtures of calcium oxide (CaO) and silica gel (SiO2) in molar ratios of 1:1, 1.5:1, 2:1 and 3:1 were mechanochemically treated with the addition of water, and were subsequently calcined with a goal of synthesizing CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7, Ca2SiO4 compounds and CaO/Ca2SiO4 two-phase mixture. The prepared materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS, particle size laser diffraction (PSLD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Hammett indicator for basic strength and volumetric analysis for free CaO content. The catalytic activity of calcium silicates with different Ca/Si ratios was tested in the transesterification of triacylglycerols (sunflower oil) with methanol. Samples obtained with initial composition 2CaO center dot SiO2 and 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 700 degrees C, and 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 900 degrees C had high catalytic activity, resulting with triacylglycerols conversion and fatty acids methyl ester formation (FAME or biodiesel) above 96%. The activity of these samples can be attributed to the existence of free CaO defined by CaO/Ca2SiO4 complex mixture. The effect of different amount of catalyst used for transesterification (0.2-2 wt%) was analyzed using the most active catalyst i.e. 3CaO center dot SiO2 calcined at 700 degrees C as well as possibility of its reuse for biodiesel synthesis. It was also found that CaSiO3, Ca3Si2O7 and Ca2SiO4, phases did not possess catalytic activity.

AB - Continuous biodiesel production from a waste pig-roasting lard, methanol and KOH was carried out in a reciprocating plate reactor (RPR) using a factorial design containing three process factors, namely methanol/lard molar ratio, catalyst loading, and normalized height of the reactor. The main goals were to optimize the influential process factors with respect to biodiesel purity using the response surface methodology and to model the kinetics of the transesterification reaction in order to describe the change of triacylglycerols (TAG) and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) concentrations along the RPR height. The first-order rate law was proved for both the reaction and the mass transfer. The model of the changing reaction mechanism and mass transfer of TAG was also applicable. Both kinetic models agreed with the experimental concentrations of TAG and FAME determined along the RPR height.

AB - The present study compares the performances of the regression models developed by the response surface methodology combined with the full factorial, Box-Behnken or face central composite designs applied for the ultrasound-assisted KOH-catalyzed methanolysis of sunflower oil. While all models led to similar optimal reaction conditions, the models based on the simpler designs had the smaller corrected Akaike information criterion values, the insignificant lack of fit and the more favorable statistical criteria than the model based on the full factorial design. Including fewer experiments, the Box-Behnken design can be recommended for the optimization of ultrasound-assisted biodiesel production processes.

AB - Potential non-toxic pink and red ceramic pigments based on CeO2 were successfully synthesized by self-propagating room temperature method and thermally treated at 600, 900 and 1200 degrees C for 15 min. The structure, morphology and optical properties, as well as thermal stability of Ce1-xErxO2-delta and Ce1-xPrxO2-delta (x = 0.05) were examined. Single-phase composition of all obtained CeO2 pigments was confirmed using XRPD method and Raman spectroscopy and it was not dependent on temperature. The mechanism of structural behaviour was thoroughly examined using Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. Nanometric dimensions of the crystallites of all pigments were confirmed using XRPD, TEM and FE-SEM analysis. Colour properties were dependent on the temperature treatment, and their position in the chromaticity diagram was studied using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. Colour efficiency measurements were supplemented by colorimetric analysis. It is proved that all samples are thermally stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 1200 degrees C), and their potential application as environmentally friendly pigments of desired colour is confirmed.

AB - Aluminum pillared clay was synthesized and impregnated with Co2+ (CoAP), using incipient wetness impregnation method. The obtained CoAP was characterized by chemical analysis, XRPD, SEM with EDS, XPS and low temperature N2 physisorption. By these methods the incorporation of Co2+ was confirmed in both micro and mesoporous region. The synthesized material was investigated as a catalyst in catalytic oxidation of organic water pollutants – dyes – in the presence of Oxone® (peroxymonosulfate). Oxone® is a precursor of sulfate radicals. Tartrazine was chosen as a model dye pollutant. The influence of the mass of the catalyst, temperature and initial pH was investigated. Temperature increase was beneficial for dye degradation rate. The reaction rate was the highest for initial pH values around those corresponding to neutral conditions, somewhat slower for pH < 4 values, while for pH > 10 decolorization was significantly less expressed. Along with decolorization of tartrazine solution the formation and degradation of tartrazine catalytic oxidation products were monitored using UV–Vis spectroscopy. CoAP was found to be efficient catalyst in Oxone® induced catalytic degradation of both tartrazine and detected products of its degradation.

AB - This paper describes the pyrolysis of Poplar fluff (from Populus alba) using on-line apparatus, and carbonization process at 850 degrees C using the fixed bed reactor. Characteristics of pyrolysis products were examined. Elemental and chemical analyses were shown that Poplar fluff has higher energy content characterized by increased content of fibrous structure (particularly cellulose). Independent parallel reactions model very well describes devolatilization process. It was found that increased amount of extractives can significantly affect on increased release of light gaseous products, but declining hydrocarbons, mostly the alkanes. Liquid product is mainly composed of phenolics, aldehydes, acids, esters and ketones. The carbonization process produces the great abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), where naphthalene is the most abundant. Mechanism for PAH's formation was suggested. This study represents the first step in a much wider and more comprehensive way in thermal conversion processes of this type of fuel.

AB - Milling of cyanoacetamide and acetoacetic ester as reactants, in the presence of KOH as the catalyst and ethanol as a viscous control agent (VCA) was performed in a planetary ball mill with the goal of investigating the effect of mechanochemical treatment for the synthesis of 3-cyano-6hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone at room temperature. The mechanochemical synthesis was performed under various milling parameters, i.e. milling time up to 4 h, number and size of balls, angular velocity as well as molar ratio of reactants and the amount of catalyst. The obtained product was characterized by m.p., UV, IR and NMR data. It was fond that the dominant process parameter is the milling time while others are of less importance. The highest isolated yield after milling was up to 56%. The combination of milling and aging increase yield over 60%.

AB - The presented study describes macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylateco-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [PGME] functionalized with diethylenetriamine [PGME-deta] as a potential recovery agent for Mo(VI) oxyanions from aqueous solutions. Sorption studies were carried out by varying experimental conditions (pH, time, concentration, temperature). Kinetics of Mo(VI) sorption was investigated in batch (static) experiments, in the temperature range 298-343 K. Sorption dynamics data were fitted to seven chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models. The kinetics studies showed that Mo(VI) sorption adhered to the pseudo-second-order model under all investigated operating conditions. The sorption kinetics was determined to be governed by both the intraparticle diffusion and the external film diffusion to a lesser extent. The temperature rise promotes the molybdate species removal, with the maximum experimental uptake capacity of 4.02 mmol g(-1) at 298 K, at the selected pH which is consistent with the predominance range of hydrolized polynuclear Mo(VI) forms and optimum electrostatic attraction.

AB - The classical design of continuous chemical reactors exploits steady-state operation, which is optimized and maintained by appropriate control systems. Nevertheless, it is well-known that the reactor performance can be enhanced by applying periodic regimes, like forced modulations of input parameters. The identification and evaluation of suitable periodic operation conditions is challenging. One approach that can be used is based on nonlinear frequency response (NFR) analysis. The focus of this work is the experimental analysis of shapes for two simultaneously imposed modulations (sinusoidal and square) in comparison to results predicted by the NFR method. The acetic anhydride hydrolysis was studied in an adiabatic CSTR exploiting a periodic operation mode, which was found to be superior to the corresponding steady-state operation.

AB - The continuous biodiesel production from soybean oil was carried out under the subcritical condition of methanol with MnCO3/Na-silicate as a heterogeneous catalyst. The transesterification rate was first investigated in a set of experiments performed in a batch autoclave at 448 K using methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 18:1 and various catalyst loadings (5, 10 and 20 wt% based on the oil mass). The results from these experiments, as well as the experimental data and the appropriate kinetic model recently reported in the literature were used for designing a packed bed tubular reactor (PBTR), a main unit of the pilot plant with the capacity of 100 L of biodiesel per day. The pilot plant was constructed and tested under various operating conditions. The first 11 h of the pilot-plant operation was realized in the tubular reactor packed with inert glass beads (i.e. without the catalyst) in order to analyze the effect of the non-catalyzed subcritical biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) production. Then, glass beads were replaced with a mix of MnCO3/Na-silicate catalyst particles and glass beads, and the catalytic biodiesel production was continuously run under the subcritical methanol condition for 85 h. Two mass balance tests during the continuous pilot plant operation were performed.

AB - The MnCO3/Na silicate (Mn/Na/Si mole ratio of 4.65:1:1.65) catalyst in the form of solid particles with diameter of 0.99-1.99 mm was used as a catalyst for transesterification of soybean oil in batch autoclave at different conditions: 388-468 K, methanol-to-oil mole ratio 12:1-30:1, catalyst amount based on the mass of oil 0-12.5 %. The complete triacylglycerols (TAG) conversion and high yield of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) was obtained after 1 h at 458 K, methanol-to-oil mole ratio 30:1 and 10 % of catalyst. Kinetics of transesterification process was analyzed by three models: the simple first order irreversible reaction rate, as well as two more complex models recently reported in literature. The catalyst reuse in transesterification process was tested and the average values of 99.0 % of TAG conversion and 97.5 % of FAME yield were obtained after 8 consecutive runs. Different techniques were used to characterize fresh and used MnCO3/Na silicate catalyst. The determined amounts of leached Na ( lt 500 ppm) and Mn ( lt 20 ppm) in biodiesel phase implied that the homogeneous-heterogeneous process influences the catalyst selectivity, whereby leached Na enables the complete transformation of TAG to FAME.

abstract = "The MnCO3/Na silicate (Mn/Na/Si mole ratio of 4.65:1:1.65) catalyst in the form of solid particles with diameter of 0.99-1.99 mm was used as a catalyst for transesterification of soybean oil in batch autoclave at different conditions: 388-468 K, methanol-to-oil mole ratio 12:1-30:1, catalyst amount based on the mass of oil 0-12.5 %. The determined amounts of leached Na ( lt 500 ppm) and Mn ( lt 20 ppm) in biodiesel phase implied that the homogeneous-heterogeneous process influences the catalyst selectivity, whereby leached Na enables the complete transformation of TAG to FAME.",

AB - The manganese carbonate catalyst, prepared by precipitation method, was used in transesterification of soybean oil under subcritical condition of methanol. Catalyst samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier trans-form infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The triacylglycerol (TAG) conversion and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The transesterification was realized for 1 h using various working conditions: 0-3 wt.% of catalyst (based on the mass of oil), the mole ratio of methanol to oil from 13:1 to 27:1 and temperature ranging from 393 to 473 K. A maximum TAG conversion of 98.1% could be obtained at the optimal reaction conditions: 2 wt.% of catalyst, methanol/oil mole ratio of 21:1, for 1 h in a batch reactor at 453 K. Kinetic analysis showed that the model based on mass transfer and chemical reaction at the catalyst surface confirmed the experimental data. Using that kinetic expression, the effect of continuous transesterification was proposed and verified by a 360-h long realized experiment in a laboratory packed-bed reactor (PBR). Slow deactivation of the catalyst was caused by leaching of Mn in both biodiesel and glycerol phases and by blocking the active sites of the catalyst with organic compounds.

AB - Supercritical CO2 extraction of Helichrysum italicum and impregnation of starch xerogels with the extract by using an integrated scCO(2) extraction and impregnation process were performed at 350 bar and 40 degrees C in order to produce biomaterials for possible oral intake of the extract. Xerogels produced by air-drying of acetogels and alcogels were used as carriers in the supercritical impregnation process. The effect of ethanol as a co-solvent, contact time, plant material/carrier mass ratio and xerogel preparation on the impregnation loading was studied. The highest impregnation loading (1.261 +/- 0.22%) was achieved after 5 h impregnation of the xerogel obtained from alcogel using pure scCO(2) and plant material/carrier mass ratio of 10. Chemical analysis of the extracts showed that the addition of ethanol as co-solvent had a positive effect on scCO(2) selectivity to terpene fraction and total flavonoids, while it lowered the total phenolic content. Despite the difference in chemical composition, both extracts expressed similar antioxidant activity according to the DPPH and FRAP methods. The integrated process was shown to be a feasible method for isolation and incorporation of bioactive components of H italicum into starch xerogels.
