AB - The paper presents the results of research on cavitation resistance of the composite based on unsaturated polyester resin and basalt powder, as reinforcement. Basalt powder was obtained by grinding and micronising basaltic rocks from the Vrelo-Kopaonik deposit. Different amounts of basalt powder as reinforcement were applied (g): 0.15; 0.30; 045; 0,50. The mechanical properties (tensile strength, bending strength, hardness) and cavitation resistance properties were determined for the resulting composite. An ultrasonic vibration method (with stationary specimen) was applied according to ASTM G32 standard. Studies have shown that the mechanical properties and cavitation resistance of the composites increase with the addition of basalt powder as reinforcement.

AB - This paper examines the possibility of using basalt-based glass ceramics for construction of structural parts of equipment in metallurgy and mining. An ultrasonic vibration method with a stationary sample pursuant to the ASTM G32 standard was used to evaluate the possibility of the glass ceramic samples application in such operating conditions. As the starting material for synthesis of samples, olivine-pyroxene basalt from the locality Vrelo-Kopaonik Mountain (Serbia) was used. In order to obtain pre-determined structure and properties of basalt-based glass ceramics, raw material preparation methods through the sample crushing, grinding, and mechanical activation processes have been examined together with sample synthesis by means of melting, casting, and thermal treatment applied for the samples concerned. The mass loss of samples in function of the cavitation time was monitored. Sample surface degradation level was quantified using the image analysis. During the test, changes in sample morphology were monitored by means of the scanning electronic microscopy method. The results showed that basalt-based glass ceramics are highly resistant to cavitation wear and can be used in similar exploitation conditions as a substitute for other metal materials.

The experiment was conducted using an ultrasonic vibration method with a stationary sample according to the ASTM G-32 standard. To estimation the cavitation resistance, a change in the mass of the samples in the function of the cavitation time has been observed. The formation and development of damage under the effect of cavitation was monitored by an electron microscope, and the level of degradation of the sample surface was quantified using the image analysis. The results showed a high degree of cavitation resistance of cast basalt samples, with a cavitation rate of 0.0294 mg/min. This indicates the possibility of their application for the production of particular structural parts of equipment for use in metallurgy, as a substitute for metallic materials.

AB - The paper analyzes the morphology of cavitation damage of raw and sintered basalt samples. The experiment was conducted using the ultrasonic vibratory cavitation test method according to the ASTM G-32 standard. During the determination of the resistance to the effect of cavitation, a change in the mass of samples was observed in the function of the cavitation time of operation. The morphology of damage caused by the effect of cavitation was followed by scanning with an electron microscope, and the level of degradation of the surface of the samples was quantified using the image analysis. The results showed a significantly higher degree of resistance of sintered basalt, with a cavitation rate of 0.019 mg/min relative to raw basalt, with a cavitation rate of 0.738 mg/min. After 120 minutes of exposure to the cavitation effect, a smaller number of small pits on the surface of sintered basalt were observed, while a higher level of damage to the surface with the appearance of numerous pits was found in raw basalt, which can be connected in some places to larger and deeper pits in some places. The obtained results indicate the possibility of using sintered basalt for the production of parts that will be exposed to the effects of high cavitation loads.

AB - For the development of the Lost Foam refractory coatings with controlled rheologic properties, the influence of the mechanical activation process on the cordierite-based filler's properties change was examined. First of all, the test referred to the change offiller particles' size and shape, as well as to dispersion ability and stability of the coating suspension. Cordierite was obtained by synthesis in a solid state, out of the mass consisting of kaoline, alumina, quartz, sepiolite. For characterization purposes, the following methods were used: X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, SEM and optical microscopy. Mechanical activation of filler was performed in a vibrating mill. The upper boundary of the grain size was 100% -30 x 10-6 m, the times were (min): 15; 30; 60. The new composition of Lost foam refractory coatings has been developed with a change of the coating production process, as well. These newly synthesized coatings proved to be effective in terms of a positive influence on a surface quality, structural and mechanical properties of aluminium castings. Test results may be useful to have the Lost Foam refractory coatings specified together with other process parameters used for the production of castings according to this casting method.

abstract = "For the development of the Lost Foam refractory coatings with controlled rheologic properties, the influence of the mechanical activation process on the cordierite-based filler's properties change was examined. AB - Mica and talc have wide areas of application as a raw material in a number of industrial branches. Mechanically activated mica has specific applications such as: capacitors, insulators, and pearlescent pigments. Talc is widely used as either a basic raw material or as filler. This paper presents a comparative analysis of mechanically activated samples of mica and talc in ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator "Retsch ZM-1". The following mechano-activator parameters were variable: number of rotor revolutions (rpm); sieve mesh size (mu m); current intensity (A). In addition, the following parameters were monitored: duration of mechanical activation, t (min); circumferential rotor speed, v (m/s); capacity of mechano-activator, Q (kg/h); and specific energy consumption, W-e (kW h/t). It was observed that effect of mechanical activation of mica and talc increased with an increase of the load and rotor revolution of ultra-centrifugal mechano-activator. Both mica and talc were successfully treated by mechanical activation procedure. In the processing of mica, mechanical activation is suggested to be applied as a post-treatment, and in the talc processing as a pre-treatment, as the high quality talc is obtained by means of hydrometallurgical concentration method.

AB - The efficiency of talc mechanical activation by means of two different mechano-activators centrifugal and attrition mill is investigated in this study and the comparative analysis of the characteristics of obtained talc powders is presented. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate with low Fe2O3 content is achieved through effect of mechanical activation of talc accompanied by hydrometallurgical process. The applied mechanical activation process conditions of ultra-centrifugal mill were defined by number of rotor revolutions, sieve mesh size, and current intensity. These operating parameters of the ultra-centrifugal mill were variable. Ultra fine grinding of talc in attrition mill (attritor) was carried out in various time intervals - from 5 to 15 min. The following technological parameters of the mechanical activation were monitored: time of mechanical activation, circumferential rotor speed, capacity of ultra-centrifugal mill, and specific energy consumption. The investigation was based on a kinetic model. The structure and behavior of activated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

AB - This paper presents results of the research of micronization grinding of dry mica in a planetary ball mill. Investigation was conducted in order to improve the quality and to obtain clearly defined properties and characteristics of mica powder. The micronization grinding of dry mica was performed in four time periods: 30, 60, 120, and 360 minutes. The micronized powder was investigated by means of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, analysis of the degree of micronization, the specific surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The achieved results pointed out that dry mica micronization grinding which exceeds 360 minutes is recommended for this type of mill. However, it was also shown that the micronized mica produced by means of planetary ball mill after extra long periods of micronization grinding can pass into amorphous state.

AB - This paper presents the results of research on mechanical activation of raw talc in a high-energy speed rotary mechanoactivator. The results of research on effect of mechanically activated talc on the degree of recovery Fe 2O 3 by hydrometallurgical method are also presented. The process and mechanism of mechanical activation in this type of mechanoactivator were achieved by impact. The variable parameters of the mechanoactivator operation were: rate of rotor revolutions (n 0 = 10,000 and n 0 = 20,000 rpm), circle sieve mesh (80, 120, 200 and 500 μm) and the current intensity. The following parameters of the dry mechanical activation process were studied: mechanical activation time, rotor speed, mechanoactivator capacity and specific energy consumption. The mechanically activated powder was examined by application of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, analysis of the degree of mechanical activation and the specific surface area as well. According to the obtained results, the highest rate of mechanical activation was obtained with a nominal mechanoactivator load. The degree of mechanical activation increases with increasing the rate of rotor revolution, circle sieve mesh size and with the increasing mechanoactivator load. It was shown that high-grade talc concentrate with low content of Fe 2O 3 can be obtained by physical-chemical process. A new approach for obtaining high-grade talc concentrate was achieved trough mechanically activated talc effect on the degree of recovery of Fe 2O 3 by hydrometallurgical process.
