AB - Generally, clothes are constructed from woven or knitted fabrics, which can be made from natural or synthetic fibers or their mixtures. Natural fibers are characterized by their hydrophilicity, antistatic properties, and pleasant touch. Their ability to absorb water makes them susceptible to the action of microorganisms that change the textile's quality, resulting in an unpleasant odor and loss of color and strength. Wearing such clothes can also cause irritation and allergies. Besides natural materials used in textile industry, synthetic materials characterized by hydrophobicity and high mechanical properties are largely used for the production of sports clothing. In order to dye manmade fibers, synthetic dyes must be employed, which are harmful to the environment and can cause allergic reactions in humans. The dyeing of natural and synthetic materials with medicinal plant extracts improves the comfort and functionality of clothing. Plant extracts give color to textiles, and serve as antiallergic, deodorizing, and antimicrobial compounds, which is especially important when it comes to clothing used in medicine and sports. In order to promote the binding of components of medicinal plant extracts, certain modifications of the textile surface are required at the microscopic level, which can affect the wetting and dyeing ability. Plasma treatment can be considered as an alternative to conventional fiber modification procedures due to its appropriate environmental and economic acceptability.

AB - Oxidized cotton linters, TOCell, were used as an adsorbent or derived membrane there from by linters
cross-linking with citric acid. The adsorption/desorption study of Pb2+, methylene blue (MB), and crystal
violet (CV) removal, was performed. Adsorption data fitting, obtained using the Langmuir model, gave
116 mg g 1 (Pb2+), 179 mg g 1 (MB) and 482 mg g 1 (CV) at 25 ℃ for TOCell linters, while 101 mg g 1
(Pb2+), 165 mg g 1 (MB) and 426 mg g 1 (CV) for TOCell membrane. After desorption dyes were subjected
to photocatalytic degradation while lead was transformed into stable lead phthalate (LP), and further
used as filler in composites based on unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). UPR was synthesized from
waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Structural characterization was performed using FTIR, SEM,
and NMR methods. Composites loaded with acryloyl modified kraft lignin (A-KfL) and/or LP was tested
for tensile strength, Vickers microhardness, and fire resistance (UL-94 V method). The best mechanical
and fireproofing properties were obtained at 15 wt.% A-KfL and 40 wt.% Al(OH)3 addition. The results
of the toxicity leaching test (TCLP) confirmed the environmentally safe stabilization of desorbed pollutant
in the UPR matrix. Application of environmentally friendly membranes, susceptible to easy biodegradation, had low negative effects to the environment.

AB - This study investigates the effect of surface modification by deposition of electrospun fibers on properties and performance of three different microporous polypropylene/polyethylene (PP/PE) commercial nonwoven membrane supports (Novatexx 2430, 2465 and 2473). Polyamide (nylon 6) nanofiber webs with a small number of defects and fibers of about 100 nanometer diameter were successfully deposited onto a surface of the selected membrane supports. FESEM was used to examine microstructure and morphology of the unmodified substrates and the prepared composite two-layer membranes. DSC was applied to investigate thermal stability and FT-IR analysis to confirm the chemical composition of the studied membranes. Saline water permeability tests of the prepared two-layer composite membranes were carried out. The largest pressure difference was measured for PA nanofiber/Novatexx 2430 sample, which was ascribed to a denser net structure of the membrane support and possibly to the newly formed layer of dissolved salts on the membrane surface.

AB - The study aimed to estimate the influence of temperature, time, and ultrasound application during desizing and scouring of cotton with α-amylase and pectinase, respectively, on the weight loss, breaking force and color difference between raw and bio-scoured cotton, to obtain purified and hydrophilic cotton, with a simultaneous slight decrease in mechanical properties. Under the optimal conditions, determined by the application of Response Surface Methodology (time – 30 min, temperature – 59.4 °C, with ultrasound treatment), a weight loss of 4.97%, color difference of 3.86, and a breaking force of 730.22N were obtained. The bio-scoured cotton fabric was also characterized in terms of electrokinetic and sorption properties, chemical composition and morphology of the cotton surface by zeta-potential measurement, wicking and contact angle determination, FTIR and SEM characterization, respectively. The developed enzymatic scouring process leads to obtaining purified, whiter and hydrophilic cotton, with slight changes in mechanical properties, which makes bio-scoured cotton fabric suitable for further wet processing.

AB - This study elaborates the application of composite films based on nanofibrillated cellulose obtained from cotton linters oxidized in the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)/NaBr/NaClO system, with the use of CaCO3 and/or Al(OH)(3) as fillers, and glycols as plasticizers, to improve the mechanical, optical, and sorption properties of paper. The paper coating with nanofibrillated cellulose-based films, without additional adhesive, depending on the concentration of nanofibrillated cellulose in the dispersion and the type of filler, improves the mechanical properties of paper, and decreases sorption properties, while no significant changes were observed in optical properties compared to the initial papers.

AB - In this paper, the capillary rise and sorption ability of hemp fibers oxidized with hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate were studied, with the aim to get more insight into the changes in the structure of hemp fibers caused by oxidation, and to compare the influence of applied oxidative agents on hemp fibers. Capillary rise was presented as a function of a liquid rise height vs times, with determined all three capillary coefficients, while sorption ability was determined as water retention values and moisture sorption. For structural analysis of the samples the ATR-FTIR technique was used. Also, the amount of aldehyde and carboxyl groups and the lignin content in oxidized fibers were determined. The surface fibers morphology was observed by FESEM. In all oxidized hemp fibers an increase in capillarity was obtained for both oxidizing agents (33-75 mm for H2O2, and 40-114 mm for KMnO4), compared to 31 mm for unmodified fibers, but decreased sorption ability. Application of both oxidative agents, were successful for introduction of functional groups into oxidized fibers, for reduction of the amount of non-cellulosic substances, as well as moisture sorption. Simultaneously, the fibers became finer, cleaner, whiter, softer and more suitable for further processing, while, generally, higher influence on changes into oxidized hemp fibers was achieved by oxidation with KMnO4, compared to oxidation with H2O2.

AB - Applications of hemp fibers, as a promising natural material in the textile field, mostly require improved fiber properties. In this paper, the oxidation of hemp fibers with potassium permanganate was applied to reduce the amount of noncellulosic substances and moisture sorption; to introduce functional groups and increase capillarity; make fibers finer, softer and suitable for application in sport wears. The changes in sorption properties were characterized by capillary rise measurement and the ability of water retention and moisture sorption, while changes in mechanical properties were estimated by determination of tenacity and elongation of modified hemp fibers in comparison to the appropriate characteristic of unmodified fibers. ATR-FTIR, SEM techniques, and zeta potential measurement were used for the characterization of fiber structure, morphological and electrokinetic properties. We obtained a finer fiber with increased capillarity (up to 3.68 times) but reduced moisture sorption (down to 1.5 times) and water retention capacity (down to 2.8 times), with accomplished satisfactory preservation of mechanical properties. Obtained oxidized hemp fibers with attained features present a very suitable material for sportswear production. Additionally, in this paper, an improvement of the capillary rise measurement is given.

AB - Nanofibrillated films based on TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were applied to reduce the hydrophilic properties of paper. For this purpose, aqueous dispersions of nanofibrillated cellulose of different composition: 1 and 3% of nanofibrillated cellulose, up to 13% of CaCO3 and/or Al(OH)3, up to 20% of propane-1,2-diol (glycol), and up to 21% of TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were coated on the model paper, without additional adhesive. The pristine model paper and papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based composite films were characterized in terms of water absorptiveness by COBB method and water drop contact angle measurements. The surface appearance was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface chemistry by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform and attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR). Additionally, optical properties, i.e. measurement of reflection curves and CIE degrees of whiteness, were determined according to appropriate standards. For all papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based films, depending on the composition of the dispersions, a decrease in sorption properties was achieved, without changes in optical properties and surface morphology of the paper compared to the pristine paper.

AB - Stability of cotton fibers oxidized by the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO)-mediated system during natural aging was monitored; the oxidized and five-year-aged fibers were characterized in terms of molecular weight distribution, quantity and distribution of functionalities, tensile strength, color difference, and yellowness index. The distribution of functionalities introduced in cotton fibers by TEMPO-mediated oxidation and subsequent aging was investigated by means of gel permeation chromatography using multiple detection and group-selective labeling. The mild TEMPO-mediated oxidation retains the molar mass of oxidized cotton, but this status is not stable during natural aging. For highly oxidized cotton, the molar mass of aged fibers is low but stable. Aged TEMPO-oxidized cotton shows a prominent discoloration and an increased yellowness index. For tensile strength, the limiting value was obtained for aged TEMPO-oxidized cotton, regardless of whether the samples had initially been oxidized with a low or high degree of oxidation.

AB - This paper presents the study that would allow a revision of the currently valid diagnostic reference level in intraoral dental X-ray radiography in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study was conducted for six procedures that are used to capture incisor, premolar and molar teeth, of both maxilla and mandible, in adults. Measurements were performed on 41 intraoral X-ray devices, 20 of which were systems with digital image receptor and 21 film-based X-ray systems. In this study, incident air kerma (K-i) and air kerma-area product (P-KA) were used as patient dose descriptors. The third quartile (Q(3)) of the measured incident air-kerma values was used to compare with the current national diagnostic reference level (DRL) for intraoral dental procedures. The obtained results of Q(3) for both types of devices, with film-based and digital image receptors, have shown that the third quartile values are lower (3.5 and 1.2 mGy, respectively) than the current national DRL (7.0 mGy). Hence, new data can be used to re-establish the diagnostic reference levels in intraoral dental X-ray examinations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

abstract = "This paper presents the study that would allow a revision of the currently valid diagnostic reference level in intraoral dental X-ray radiography in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hence, new data can be used to re-establish the diagnostic reference levels in intraoral dental X-ray examinations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.",

AB - Liquid transport in textile fabrics determines thermal comfort during high physical activity of a person when liquid perspiration is produced and needs to be transferred away from the skin to keep the thermal balance. In this investigation, an attempt was made to get some indications of how the combination of the fabric composition, geometry and dimensional stability, and the moisture content influences liquid transfer properties of plain weft knitted fabrics. Therefore, the knitted fabrics made from pure hydrophilic (hemp fibres), pure hydrophobic (acrylic fibres) and a hydrophilic/hydrophobic (hemp/acrylic) fibre blend underwent a trial wear and care period. The Malden Mills water distribution test was performed for the knitted fabrics with different moisture contents (0-30 %) in order to evaluate the effect on liquid transfer properties. Water transfer ability and water holding capacity of the knitted fabrics were also determined after undergoing the wear trial test. The obtained results were analysed with respect to macro and micro scales of porosity of knitted fabrics. It has been shown that the geometric configuration of the complex porous network in knitted fabrics influenced their liquid transfer properties in the whole moisture content range regardless of the composition. Despite the reconfiguration of the pore system in the knits during the trial period, their liquid transfer properties were still dependent on the pore size and distribution.

AB - The development of automated software and the device for determination of wicking of textile materials, using open-source ImageJ libraries for image processing, and newly designed additional algorithm for the determination of threshold, is presented in this paper. The description of the device, design of the open-source software "Kapilarko", as well as an explanation of the steps: image processing, threshold determination and reading of wicking height, are provided. We have also investigated the possibility of using the artificial neural networks for automatic recognition of the wicking height. The results showed that the recognition of the wet area of the sample, based on the application of artificial neural networks was in a very good agreement with the experimental data. The device's utility for the measurement of wicking ability of textile materials was proved by testing various knitted fabrics. The constructed device has the advantages of providing automated measurement and minimization of the subjective errors of the operators; extremely fast or long-term measurements; digital recording of results; consistency of experimental conditions; possibility of using water instead of colors and, last but not least, low cost of the device. Considering the importance and frequent measurements of wicking ability of textile materials, the advantages of the presented device, as well as the fact that commercial software without publishing the source-code, are used for most of the available devices, we believe that our idea to design the automated software and device by applying the "open-source" approach, will be of benefit to scientists and engineers in using or improving wicking experiments.

2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl-TEMPO radical) and non-selective (H2O2 and
KMnO4) oxidation agents on cellulose are presented. Their importance in modifying the
existing properties or giving new properties to cellulosic materials, as well as examples of
their applications are also given. The oxidation product - oxycellulose presents the base for
obtaining a wide range of materials for special applications. Particularly, the influence of
TEMPO-mediated oxidation on natural and man-made cellulosic fibers is presented, with a
detailed overview on the type and quantity of introduced functional groups, changes in
structure, sorption and mechanical properties. Also, we described the use of TEMPOmediated oxidation for the production of cellulosic nano-materials in the form of
dispersions, particles and films, as well as the potential application of these nano-structural
materials.
AB - U ovom radu predstavljeni su principi dejstva selektivnih (NaIO4

AB - The paper gives an overview of the current state in the field of natural and chemical cellulose fibers, as well as future prospects of these fibers. While there is a strong expansion of the synthetic fibers industry, world production and consumption of natural and chemical cellulosic fibers were stabilized at certain level with small oscillation in the last few years. Cotton production reaches average level at 25 mil.ton, flax production at 0.8 mil. ton, hemp production at 0.07 mil.ton and jute production at 3.3 mil.ton, while chemical cellulosic fiber production reaches average level at 6 mil.ton. It is expected that cellulose fibers only for clothing, will be in demand up to 40 mil.ton in the year 2050 due to growing market of hydrophylic fibers and tendency to develop production of natural, light, renewable and biodegradable fibers. In this regard, bast fibers, such as flax, hemp, jute, ramie, etc., isolated from plants that cause little or no detrimental effect on the ecosystem, acquire enormous significance. Their modification and conversion into novel value-added products have been discussed.

vlakana konoplje. Tokom primene oba oksidaciona sredstva (H2O2 i KMnO4), oksidacioni uslovi su
menjani na isti način: koncentracija oksidacionih agenasa (3% i 6%), pH vrednosti (7, 9 i 11) i
vremena trajanja oksidacije (10, 20 i 30 min). U zavisnosti od korišćenog oksidacionog sredstva i
uslova oksidacije, dobijene su promene u količini uvedenih funkcionalnih grupa i sorpcionim
svojstavima modifikovanih vlakana konoplje u poređenju sa nemodifikovanim vlaknima konoplje.

AB - In this paper, the influences of two different non-selective oxidative agents, hydrogen peroxide and
potassium permanganate, on the amount of introduced functional groups and sorption properties of
modified hemp fibers, were investigated. Oxidative conditions were changed at the same manner
for both oxidative agents (H2O2 and KMnO4): the oxidative agent concentration (3 % and 6 %), pH
values (7, 9 and 11) and oxidation times (10, 20 and 30 min). Depending on the oxidative agent
used and oxidative conditions, changes in the amount of introduced functional groups and sorption
properties of modified hemp fibers, compared to unmodified hemp fibers, were obtained. For both
oxidative agents, applied under the same oxidation conditions, the increase in sorption properties
was obtained only in the case of oxidation with 3% H2O2, i.e. 3% KMnO4, for 10 minutes, at all pH
values. In all other cases, for both oxidizing agents, the decreases in the sorption properties,
determined as water retention values, were obtained. In the case of oxidation with potassium
permanganate, the higher amounts of functional groups were introduced in oxidized hemp fibers,
compared to the oxidation with the hydrogen peroxide, applied under the same oxidative conditions.

funkcionalnih grupa kod nemodifikovanih vlakana. Uvedene funkcionalne grupe mogu da se
upotrebljavaju direktno ili mogu da se koriste za naknadno hemijsko modifikovanje. Sorpciona

concentrations (3% and 6% H2O2), during different oxidation times and pH values of the oxidative
medium, at room temperature and at 45°C. The emphasis of this study is placed on the influence of
different conditions of non-selective oxidation with hydrogen peroxide on the amount of the
introduced functional groups and the sorption properties of hemp fibers. By changing the oxidation
conditions, the amount of introduced functional groups were increased in the range from 2.8 to 5.6
times, compared to the amount of functional groups in unmodified fibers. Introduced functionalities
can be use directly, or they can be used for further chemical modification. Sorption properties of
oxidized hemp fibers, which were determined as water retention values (WRV), showed an increase
in the water retention value only for hemp fibers oxidized with 3% H2O2, during 10 minutes. For all
other oxidized hemp fibers, a decrease in the water retention value, relative to WRV of unmodified
hemp fibers, was obtained.

AB - In this paper, we present the construction of a reliable and inexpensive pH stat device, by using open-source "OpenPhControl" software, inexpensive hardware (a peristaltic and a syringe pump, Arduino, a step motor...), readily available laboratory devices: a pH meter, a computer, a webcam, and some 3D printed parts. We provide a methodology for the design, development and test results of each part of the device, as well as of the entire system. In addition to dosing reagents by means of a low-cost peristaltic pump, we also present carefully controlled dosing of reagents by an open-source syringe pump. The upgrading of the basic open-source syringe pump is given in terms of pump control and application of a larger syringe. In addition to the basic functions of pH stat, i.e. pH value measurement and maintenance, an improvement allowing the device to be used for potentiometric titration has been made as well. We have demonstrated the device's utility when applied for cellulose fibers oxidation with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical, i.e. for TEMPO-mediated oxidation. In support of this, we present the results obtained for the oxidation kinetics, the consumption of added reagent and experimental repeatability. Considering that the open-source scientific tools are available to everyone, and that researchers can construct and adjust the device according to their needs, as well as, that the total cost of the open-source pH stat device, excluding the existing laboratory equipment (pH meter, computer and glossary) was less than 150 EUR, we believe that, at a small fraction of the cost of available commercial offers, our open-source pH stat can significantly improve experimental work where the use of pH stat is necessary.

AB - Cotton fibers containing different amounts of aldehyde and carboxyl groups were prepared by varying TEMPO oxidation conditions and then employed as carriers for trypsin immobilization. Depending on the functional group type present in the oxidized fiber, trypsin was immobilized through the ionic interaction or together with the Schiff's base formation. The TEMPO oxidation caused changes in the chemical and physical properties of the modified cotton, which were evaluated by determining the aldehyde and carboxyl group content, sorption and electrokinetic properties, and surface morphology of fibers. The trypsin activity was assayed with N-alpha-benzoyl- DL-arginine p-nitroanilide hydrochloride, and the protein content was determined by the Bradford method. The impact of oxidized fiber functional groups on the amount, activity and stability of the immobilized trypsin was investigated. The cotton fibers oxidized under the most severe conditions (4.84 mmol/g NaClO, 180 min) and having the highest functional groups content (0.79 mmol/g) exhibited the maximum amount of immobilized trypsin of about 6.5 mg/g. However, the immobilized activity and the stability were much higher for the fibers containing both carboxyl and aldehyde groups compared to the corresponding fibers containing only carboxyl groups.

AB - Oxidation of cellulose fibers is usual procedure for surface cleaning and introducing new functionalities in their structure. Due to the presence of three hydroxyl groups on each
glucopiranose unit, cellulose is very susceptible to oxidation. The most desirable and positive
effect of oxidation is introduction of acidic carboxyl groups in cellulose structure. Acidic
groups contribute to the surface charge of fibers and have influence on streaming potential of
fibers. In this work cellulose fibers (cotton and viscose) with different amounts of COOH
groups were prepared via oxidation with KMnO4, NaIO4 and NaClO2 under various treatment conditions. Carboxyl group content and zeta potential measurements were carried out in order to investigate influence of acidic groups’ quantity on surface charge of fibers.
Results could help to anticipate how processing technique such as oxidation would influence further textile fibers processing, since surface charge is directly related to the reactivity of cellulose to a different agents, e.g. dyes, finishing agents, drug compounds for wound treatment, etc.

abstract = "Oxidation of cellulose fibers is usual procedure for surface cleaning and introducing new functionalities in their structure.

AB - In this paper, we merge the unique properties of cotton and silver in order to obtain antimicrobial cotton fibers. The sorption properties of cotton were improved by selective TEMPO-mediated oxidation, i.e. oxidation with sodium hypochlorite, sodium bromide and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl radical (TEMPO), and evaluated by determination of moisture sorption and water retention. Increases of up to 1.55 and 4.7 times were obtained for moisture sorption and water retention value, respectively. The antimicrobial properties were achieved by incorporation of silver into TEMPO-oxidized cotton by combination of Ag+ chemisorption from aqueous AgNO3 and reduction of Ag+ to Ag-0 by cellulose itself. The amount of incorporated silver was in the range from 0.102 to 0.806 mmol/g fibers. The antimicrobial activity of the obtained fibers against pathogens C. albicans, S. aureus and E. coli was evaluated. An attempt has been made to explain the roles of the introduced functionalities and changes in the sorption properties of the TEMPO-oxidized cotton on silver deposition.
