AB - High concentrations of hydrophobic MFI zeolite (26.0–51.3 wt%) were successfully embedded in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) network in simple, one-pot synthesis of PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels. The effects of zeolite concentration regarding pure PMAA xerogel, for all of the investigated properties (primary structural parameters, morphological properties, water swelling ability, thermal degradation mechanism and stability, and mechanical properties) were determined and discussed. The PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1660/1420 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (29/1.0 × 10−4), improved mechanics in the dry and swollen state (up to 4.9 times higher storage modulus) and lower swelling degree (42/420 g g−1), average molar mass between the network crosslinks (3.6/110 × 104 g mol−1), and distance between the macromolecular chains (64/710 nm). Despite high zeolite concentration, the composites kept porous hydrogel structure with uniformly dispersed zeolite particles. FTIR spectra disclosed the existence of functional groups of PMAA network and MFI zeolite that interacted mutually and led to increased crosslinking density. The effect of zeolite concentration on the thermal degradation mechanism was established. The composition-properties correlations were determined and described by the adequate linear or power law equations revealing the additive nature of the composites and the fractal structure of the networks. These correlations enable the achievement of desired properties by simple adjustment of the initial composition, i.e. zeolite concentration. Therefore, this work presents the base for further development of tailor-made PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels aimed for specific application.

AB - Emerging efforts in the field of biocomposites established novel combinations of biobased matrix
materials and reinforcements, as well as the optimization of curing conditions, to enhance their
properties and expand their range of applications. The curing conditions of nanocellulose

reinforced biobased unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based on itaconic acid and it derivatives’

were examined within this work. Since the curing process of biobased UPR requires the presence
of both an initiator and an activator, the optimization was conducted in two phases. The first
phase investigated the effect of different concentrations of an activator, cobalt octoate, (0.5, 1.0
and 1.5 mass%) with a constant concentration of an initiator, a mixture of dibenzoyl peroxide
(DBP) and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) (DBP to MEKP ratio 1.5:1.0; 2.5 mass% total).
The ratios of DBP and MEKP were varied in the second phase of experiments in the following
manner: 2.5:0,1.75:0.75, 0.75:1.75 and 0:2.5 (keeping the total initiator mass% of 2.5). The effect
of the different curing conditions on the UPR properties was monitored via the gel content
analysis and the uniaxial tensile test. It was shown that the increase in activator concentration
led to the decrease in gel content, tensile strength and elongation at the break. On the other
hand, the increase in dibenzoyl peroxide concentration in the initiator mixture revealed
enhanced overall mechanical properties. The optimal curing conditions were found to be 0.5
mass% of activator, and 1.75:0.75 DBP to MEKP ratio in the initiator mixture. Thereby obtained
UPR biocomposite showed a significant increase in elastic attributes suggesting that these
materials can be used where high elasticity is needed.

AB - Composite hydrogels are the subject of intensive research due to there specific 3D cross-linked
structure with extraordinary physical and chemical properties which enables variety of applications In
spite of increasing interest for using different external fields in physical-chemical processes, three are
no available literature data about the effects of external fields on swelling and swelling kinetics of
hydrogels. Therefore, the effects of (conventional) thermal (TH), ultrasonic (US) and microwave (MW)
fields, on the swelling degree and swelling kinetics. A sample of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) xerogel
with 10%wt of LTA-zeolite (PMMA-LTA) was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The
isothermal kinetic swelling curves were determined within a temperature range T= 293-323K in the
TH, US and MW fields. The results were well fitted with the Peppas’ kinetic model. At all applied
fields, with an increase in temperature, there is an increase in the equilibrium swelling degree (SDeq)
and the swelling rate constant (k), while the parameter of Pepass's model (n) decreases. The maximum
value of SDeq and parameter n is achieved at TH, while the US assisted process leads to the maximum
value of k. The minimum value of the activation energy (Ea) and at the same time the maximum value
of the pre-exponential factor (lnA) lnA were achieved by applying the MW field. The influence of US
and MW fields on the diffusion of water molecules through the polymer network, activation of the
polymer network for swelling and relaxation of the polymer network was analysed.

AB - Nowadays, the extensive use of pesticides in crops production puts a significant challenge to minimize its side effects along with safe production, storage, and after-use treatment. This paper reports results related to the emission of certain pesticide formulations through the PET containers, as well as, their mitigation to the PET containers during their storage. The influence of storage time on cypermethrin migration to and through the PET was studied in short-term Collaborative International Pesticides Analytical Council test lasting up to 30 days. The PET containers were filled with pure xylene and pesticide formulations, where the amount of active substance, cypermethrin (CY), varied from 5 to 20 wt%, while the amount of emulsifier was kept constant. The results indicate that pesticide formulations diffuse to PET containers with an average increase of its initial mass up to 1.5%. The most intensive diffusion is in the first 24 months of storage, after its rate significantly decreases. It should be noted that the diffusion studied pesticide formulations are also very dependent on CY concentration. Besides the migration to the PET containers, it was also found that pesticide formulation was emitted through the PET containers in the first 17 to 24 months of storage depending on CY concentration. Emission rates were also dependent on CY concentration and were in the range of 15.3 to 38.0 mg/month center dot container. The emission through the PETcontainers was successfully predicted using artificial neural networks with R-2 = 0.94 and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of only 6.2% on testing.

AB - The design of complex polymeric materials with predefined task-specific properties meets challenging issues: to establish synthesis-structure-properties relationship, as well as to understand the arrangement and interactions of the involved components. Hybrid networks of protein (casein) and polyelectrolyte (poly(methacrylic acid)) were synthesized and their swelling, dynamic-mechanical and morphological properties were investigated as functions of the neutralization degree of methacrylic acid and the concentrations of caseinate and crosslinker. The domination of different interactions between components led to diverse forms of casein macromolecules-from micelles to unfold chains. That resulted in very different structures and thereby properties of derived hybrid networks: from porous unswellable to highly swellable and reinforced ones. A great opportunity to easily modulate the final characteristics of the reported hybrid system to fit the need of specific application just through the change of one synthesis parameter was thereby demonstrated.

A great opportunity to easily modulate the final characteristics of the reported hybrid system to fit the need of specific application just through the change of one synthesis parameter was thereby demonstrated.",

AB - The aim of this paper is to present image analysis as a useful technique for fast, reliable and non-destructive detection of dimensional and structural changes in polymers. The possibility of applying image analysis was demonstrated in the case of solvent-induced crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) containers filled with commonly used organic solvents: chlorobenzene, isophorone, xylene, Espesol, Shellsol A 100, Solvesso 150, propylene glycol, glycerin and water and subjected to the storage stability test at 54 degrees C for 14 days (CIPAC 1-MT 46.1.3). In addition, the obtained results were analyzed using one-step analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with the Duncan's statistical test (p lt 0.05). According to the achieved results, three main impacts of the presented paper could be distinguished: 1) dimensional and transparency changes could be precisely followed by image analysis in both following cases: for small changes in water, as well as for significant ones in chlorobenzene; 2) a correlation between the changes in the degree of crystallinity and transparency could be obtained without the continuous material testing by DSC; 3) image analysis is potentially applicable for assessment of other crystalline polymers.

AB - The sustainable tomorrow for future generations lies with the present industrial development toward the proper utilization of various bio-based products. For a transition to a higher level of sustainability, it is necessary to form a new platform for advanced technology products. This paper reports the development of new fully bio-based unsaturated polyesters resins (UPRs). A series of prepolymers were synthesized by varying saturated diacids (oxalic, succinic and adipic acid), itaconic acid and 1,2-propandiol. Dimethyl itaconate was used as a reactive diluent (RD) in amounts of 30, 35 and 40 wt%. Rheological measurements showed that the obtained resins possessed viscosities (234-2226 mPa s) amenable to a variety of liquid molding techniques. The impact of composition variables-prepolymer structure and amount of RD-on the chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of the thermosets was examined by DMA, TA and tensile measurements and was discussed in detail. The tensile properties (37-52 MPa), glass transition temperature (60-97 A degrees C) and coefficient of thermal expansion (71-168 10(-6) A degrees C-1) of the cured resins were in the desired range for UPRs. This investigation showed that UPRs based on itaconic acid can be tailored during synthesis of the prepolymer to meet the needs of different property profiles.

AB - Present study reports synthesis and physico-chemical evaluation of hydrophobically modified pectin derivatives, obtained by reacting of pectin with di-acyl chlorides (glutaryl and sebacoyl chloride). Depending on length of the inserted carbon chains, the acylation resulted in possible formation of mono-grafted (isolated chains) and bi-grafted (chemical gels) structures. The structural features of obtained derivatives were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy, confirming the successful synthesis. The concentrated aqueous solutions of modified pectin showed interesting rheological properties, having lower values of apparent viscosity compared to neat pectin. Since the GPC analysis indicated that no degradation occurred, the viscosity decrease was explained by more heterogeneous organization within modified pectin solutions (microparticles together with sticky polymer entanglement). A shift in particle size distribution proved that proposed modifications also affected pectin solution properties in diluted regime. The modified samples turned to be more sensible to thermal degradation than neat pectin, whereby the increasing size of flexible acyl chains attached to a polymer backbone reduced the glass transition temperature. The hydrophobicity of obtained derivatives was evaluated by sessile drop and du Nouy ring methods. It was found that acylation enhanced hydrophobicity of the pectin molecule, while hydrophobically associative character turned to be inconsistent in aqueous and non-aqueous environment.

AB - During the last two decades, interest in bio-based polymers, especially in bio-based composite materials, has grown as a result of environmental concerns. In this paper new composites obtained from fully bio-based unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were studied for the first time. The composites were prepared by crosslinking the UPR in the presence of functionalized PET particles (3, 6 and 9 wt %), using dimethyl itaconate as reactive diluent. The results showed that the incorporation of the PET particles led to the increase in mechanical properties. However, higher PET loading caused a decrease in the mechanical properties of the composites because of the PET particle agglomeration.

AB - Alkyd resin/TiO2 nanocomposites (NC) were prepared from short oil alkyd resin and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface modified with in situ formed imine ligand, based on 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and oleylamine, or with three gallic acid esters. The short oil alkyd resin was synthesized from sunflower oil, phthalic anhydride, and trimethylolpropane. Unmodified and surface modified TiO2 NPs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Rheological investigation revealed that prepared dispersions have higher dynamic viscosity than pure alkyd resin. Using different characterization methods it was obtained that NCs have similar thermooxidative stability as alkyd resin, lower glass transition temperature, better barrier properties, enhanced hardness, better chemical resistance, and lower adhesion to the metal, except in the case of NC prepared using TiO2 NPs surface modified with imine, which exhibited better adhesion to the metal than pure alkyd resin.

AB - For the preparation of fully biobased unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), the replacement of styrene with alternate nonpetroleum-based monomers turned out to be one of the most challenging tasks. Its complexity lies in the fact that reactive diluents (RD) have to have low viscosity and volatility, good compatibility with prepolymer, and capability to homopolymerize and copolymerize with its unsaturations. In this context, we directed our efforts to develop fully biobased UPRs using the dialkyl itaconates as an alternative to styrene. Therefore, a series of 100% biobased UPRs were prepared from itaconic acid and 1,2-propandiol and diluted by dialkyl itaconates. The resins were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR, volatility, and viscosity measurements, while the cured samples were characterized by dynamic mechanical properties, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis data, and tensile tests. The influence of RD structure on the properties of cured samples was discussed in detail. It was shown that the prepared resins had evaporation rates of dialkyl itaconates of several orders of magnitude less compared to styrene. The cured resins with dimethyl itaconate showed comparable or even better thermal and mechanical properties compared to the one with styrene. This investigation showed that itaconic acid and dialkyl itaconates are promising bioresources for the preparation of fully biobased UPRs for mass consumption.

AB - The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of specific anions on the cross-linking process of highly methoxylated pectin using the following copper salts CuSO4; Cu(C2H3O2)(2); CuCl2; and Cu(NO3)(2) wherein the initial salt concentrations were varied from 0.5 up to 10 g l(-1). It was found that the anions affected the sorption capacity wherein the Cu2+ sorption capacity from the sulphate solution was the highest, while it decreased in the presence of CH3COO-, Cl- and NO3- ions, respectively. This difference was mostly pronounced at the higher initial salt concentrations (co(Cu2+) gt 2 g l(-1)). The obtained beads were characterized by FTIR, MS, SEM/EDS microanalysis and mechanical compression tests up to 80% of deformation. The sorption data were applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and various calculated parameters confirmed the sulphate anion supportive nature in metal ion binding. The value of the K-f parameter for the cross-linking process of pectin in the presence of acetate, chloride and nitrate was approximately the same (K-f approximate to 0.027 g g(-1)), while it was higher in the presence of sulphate anions by more than 20% (K-f = 0.0352 g g(-1)). The predicted 1/n values (1/n lt 1, 1/n gt 1, 1/n = 1 for the sulphate, nitrate and acetate, and chloride anions, respectively) were the quantitative confirmation of the specific interactions involved in the cross-linking mechanism caused by different anions. The established anion influence was in accordance with the typical ion-specific influence on macromolecules in aqueous systems proposed by Hofmeister.

AB - Mimicking the extraordinary performances of natural materials presents an attractive, but challenging approach in the synthesis of advanced functional materials. In the field of separation techniques, the design of a low-cost, regenerative, environmentally friendly sorbent and the utilization of most of its active centers to remove the targeted pollutant are everyday challenges. The combination of casein and poly(sodium methacrylate) (PMANa) in the form of a soft polymer network is proposed as a promising sorbent for the removal of Ni2+ from wastewater. Such a combination and an applied synthetic route form hybrid materials with better sorption properties than both their components alone. SEM and TEM show that caseinate micelles are dissociated and the more exposed protein structure is stabilized by the PMANa network and able to form various stable complexes. The achieved sorption capacity (224 mg g(-1)) is among the highest reported in the literature. The very high removal efficiency in the wide range of the initial Ni2+ concentrations (0.05-200 ppm) and easy and complete regeneration without decrease in sorption capacities make these low-cost materials highly sensitive sorbents attractive for use under real conditions where it is necessary to avoid environmental risks and provide the recovery and reuse of the metal.

AB - Electricity generation using carbon-based fuels is responsible for a large fraction of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. In Serbia, 70% of the electricity is produced from coal-fired power plants. The aim of this investigation was to identify the retrofitting opportunities to reduce the carbon intensity of power generation. Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production assessment was performed in a coal thermal power plant of the public company "Thermal Power Plants Nikola Tesla", which operates within the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. Assessment of the thermal power plant operation was supported by experimentally measured data (fresh water pressures and temperatures, steam temperatures and pressures, condensing pressure, water flowrate, make-up water flowrate, steam flowrate, coal composition, emissions, etc), emission factor determinations and by using data obtained during unit balancing and simulation of the system's performance. The data collected and analyzed during power plant operation were used for the development of a new general approach with comprehensive analysis of the system, using the following plant eco-efficiency indicators: energy consumption, climate change, acidification, and waste generation. Indicators were used to present decoupling after implementation of the described measures. The analysis of two units showed that the nominal power could be increased by 60 MWe, with an increase of the unit gross efficiency of 0.4%, and a reduction of coal, water and electricity consumption. The implementation of RECP measures in this study enabled analysis of the overall performance of the system as evidenced by the eco-efficiency indicators: energy consumption (decreased by 3%), CO2 emission (decreased by 3%), and SO2 emission (decreased by 39%). Consequently, it may be concluded that the proposed RECP approach, tested on thermal power plants, and presented as eco-efficiency indicators show that the described methodology may be successfully implemented in the energy sector and for the improvement in power plants.

AB - Different components of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) have different influence on their properties and their behavior in various applications, such as automotive dual curing applications. Dual curing systems, upon hardening, can give interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs). UV-thermal dual-cure process that was used to obtain IPNs consisted of an UV curable acrylic component and a classic 2-pack urethane component. Novel acrylate-terminated hyperbranched polyester with high functionality HBP(A) was used as part of the acrylic component, which was cured by UV radiation. The urethane part of the IPNs was classical 2-pack polyurethane and it was crosslinked by heating. The aim was to explore the influence of thermosetting resin HBP(A) on IPN properties. First, the weight ratio of HBP(A) and a reactive diluent 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (EHA) in the IPNs was varied from 100/0 to 25/75, while the urethane component remained the same in all the IPN samples. Then, the IPN with 50/50 weight ratio in acrylic component was used to investigate the influence of the reactive diluent in IPNs on their behavior, but also to see more clearly the role of the HBP(A) component. All the IPNs were also compared to a classical 2-pack polyurethane clear coat consisted of a hydroxyl functional acrylate copolymer (HA) and Desmodur®N3390.The IPNs were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties of the IPNs were also investigated.DMA showed that with increasing HBP(A) in the IPNs, the crosslink density increased, while the flexibility decreased. The data obtained by DMA and DSC showed a decrease of the Tg values with increasing amount of HBP(A). There were slight differences in the thermal stability of the IPNs.

AB - Polymers are very attractive as thin films in emerging reel-to-reel manufacturing or as spin coated from liquid form in a quick and low cost process in standard microfabrication processes. There is a wide selection of materials available with many different thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. With continuous growth in consumer electronics and sensors sectors, the range of potential application fields is further diversifying and integration of MEMS modules, as well as delivering IC functionality in thin foil-like packaging with proven reliability and reduction in cost is increasingly required. Furthermore, increased volume and decentralisation of testing within medical diagnostics field worldwide (IVD Point of Care and Patient Self Testing trends) require low cost solutions for disposable test cartridges and other supporting consumables. In majority of the emerging medical applications, integrated, low cost sensors need to operate in liquid environment, often rendering the use of standard Si-based solutions inadequate and costly. Polymer-based microcantilevers, realised by standard surface microfabrication techniques, were chosen for this study as the alternative approach to Si-based MEMS. Cantilevers are well understood microstructures and so provide an excellent vehicle for assessing both thermo-mechanical properties of polymers as MEMS materials and their potential for die-level packaging and integration into miniaturized systems. Due to the nature of processes involved and their thermal budget, substitution of Si substrate with e.g. flexible substrates or polymer films is foreseen in the near future. Fabricated cantilever beams consist of various combinations of thin metal/polymer and polymer/polymer films. Polyimides, as structural material, have been selected for this study due to inherently good mechanical properties, good chemical resistance, low dielectric constant and high thermal stability.

AB - The glycolytic recycling of waste PET presents a challenge for the production of secondary value-added products, such as alkyd resins. A way to overcome the unsatisfactory mechanical, drying and chemical resistance properties of alkyds obtained from difunctional glycolyzates was proposed. Waste PET was glycolyzed using multifunctional alcohols: glycerol (G), trimethylolethane (TME), trimethylolpropane (TMP) and pentaerythritol (PE), giving tetra-and hexa-functional glycolyzates and, for comparison, using diethylene glycol (DEG), propylene glycol (PG) and dipropylene glycol (DPG) giving di-functional glycolyzates. The obtained glycolyzates were examined by H-1 and C-13 NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis and further used in the synthesis of alkyd resins. The properties of the prepared alkyd resins (acid, hydroxyl and iodine values, color, average molar masses and molar mass distributions, viscosity, drying time, hardness, flexibility, gloss, adhesion and chemical resistance) were investigated with respect to the functionality and the structure of the used glycolyzates. Alkyd resins derived from multifunctional glycolyzates (TME and TMP) showed considerably enhanced properties compared to those produced from difunctional glycolyzates and also to conventional general purpose resins.

AB - The poor stability and tendency to agglomerate of unfunctionalized nano-SiO2 in the presence of ionic species presents a challenge for preparing poly(methacrylic acid)/nano-SiO2 nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels with desired strength and swelling capability. We proposed a facile and eco-friendly method for the preparation of PMAA/SiO2 NC hydrogels using unfunctionalized silica nanoparticles (NPs) in the form of a suspension. SEM and TEM analyses showed that the NP distribution in the polymer matrix highly depended on the particle concentration. At lower concentrations (up to 13.9 wt %), the NPs were uniformly dispersed as single nanoparticles. With an increase in NP concentration, homogeneously dispersed nanoscale aggregates were formed, while a further increase in the silica concentration led to the formation of homogeneous structures consisting of mutually interacting nanosilica particles coated with PMAA. Swelling experiments confirmed that the silica NPs behaved as adhesive fillers that interacted with PMAA chains, causing the formation of a thin polymer layer strongly adsorbed at the particle interface. The thicknesses of the adsorbed polymer layer, as well as the swelling kinetic parameters, were strongly influenced by nanoparticle size and concentration. Combining nanosilica and PMAA in the form of a soft hydrogel network provided stabilization of the NPs and ensured better mechanical properties of the obtained NC hydrogels compared to pure polymer matrix. The optimal loadings, necessary to ensure the most improved dynamical-mechanical properties, were found in the case of the formation of homogeneously dispersed, nanosized silica aggregates in a PMAA matrix.

AB - The aim of this work was to examine the possibility of modification of commercial denture base materials with itaconic acid esters, in order to obtain materials with lower toxicity and higher biocompatibility. Despite their relatively higher price compared to methacrylates, itaconic acid and itaconates are materials of choice for environmentally friendly applications, because they are not produced from petrochemical sources, but from plant products. A commercial system based on poly(methyl methacrylate) was modified using ditetrahydrofurfuryl itaconate (DTHFI), whereby the ratio of DTHFI was varied from 2.5 to 10 % by weight. Copolymerization was confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy, while SEM analysis showed the absence of micro defects and pores in the structure. The effects of the itaconate content on the absorption of fluids, the residual monomer content, thermal, dynamic-mechanical and mechanical properties (hardness, toughness, stress and elongation at break) were investigated. It was found that the addition of DTHFI significantly reduced the amount of residual methyl methacrylate, which made these materials less toxic. It was shown that increasing the DTHFI content resulted in materials with decreased glass transition temperatures, as well as with decreased storage modulus, ultimate tensile strength and impact fracture resistance; however the mechanical properties were in the rang prescribed by ADA standards, and the materials could be used in practice. The deterioration in mechanical properties was therefore worthwhile in order to gain lower toxicity of the leached monomer.

AB - Synthesis of high-performance anticorrosive coatings obtained from alkyd resins (ARs) based on waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) glycolyzates is presented. PET glycolyzates, synthesized by catalytic depolymerization with trimethylolpropane (TMP) and dipropylene glycol (DPG), were used as replacement of part of the polyhydroxylic component during the ARs synthesis. The obtained glycolyzates and ARs were analyzed using FT-IR and 1HNMR spectroscopy and acid, iodine, and hydroxyl value were determined. Thickness, adhesion, swelling, corrosion, spraying and layering of the synthesized ARs, as well as alkyd coating film were determined in accordance with SRPS EN ISO standards. ARs were produced in high yields and FT-IR and 1NMR analysis results confirmed assumed structures. All synthesized ARs show good elasticity, flexibility, adhesion and the gloss values are greater than 85 %, and the alkyd coating films based on AR1 and AR3 showed best corrosion results. The most effective dryer catalyst combination was 0.5 wt.% Ca, 0.03 wt.%, Co and 0.45 wt.% Zr.

AB - Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are miniaturized devices that can sense the environment, process and analyze information, and respond with a variety of mechanical and electrical actuators. MEMS consist of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, electrical and electronics devices on a common silicon substrate. Micro-electro-mechanical systems are becoming a vital technology for modern society. Some of the advantages of MEMS devices are: very small size, very low power consumption, low cost, easy to integrate into systems or modify, small thermal constant, high resistance to vibration, shock and radiation, batch fabricated in large arrays, improved thermal expansion tolerance. MEMS technology is increasingly penetrating into our lives and improving quality of life, similar to what we experienced in the microelectronics revolution. Commercial opportunities for MEMS are rapidly growing in broad application areas, including biomedical, telecommunication, security, entertainment, aerospace, and more in both the consumer and industrial sectors on a global scale. As a breakthrough technology, MEMS is building synergy between previously unrelated fields such as biology and microelectronics. Many new MEMS and nanotechnology applications will emerge, expanding beyond that which is currently identified or known. MEMS are definitely technology for 21st century.

AB - Epoxy resin/titanium dioxide (epoxy/TiO2) nanocomposites were obtained by incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles surface modified with gallic acid esters in epoxy resin. TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide and their structural characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Three gallic acid esters, having different hydrophobic part, were used for surface modification of the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles: propyl, hexyl and lauryl gallate. The gallate chemisorption onto surface of TiO2 nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, while the amount of surface-bonded gallates was determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles, as well as the length of hydrophobic part of the gallate used for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles, on glass transition temperature, barrier, dielectric and anticorrosive properties of epoxy resin was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, water vapor transmission test, dielectric spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization measurements. Incorporation of surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles in epoxy resin caused increase of glass transition temperature and decrease of the water vapor permeability of epoxy resin. The water vapor transmission rate of epoxy/TiO2 nanocomposites was reduced with increasing hydrophobic part chain length of gallate ligand. Dielectric constant of examined nanocomposites was influenced by gallate used for the modification of TiO2 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites have better anticorrosive properties than pure epoxy resin, because the surface modified TiO2 nanoparticles react as oxygen scavengers, which inhibit steel corrosion by cathodic mechanism.

AB - Spherical TiO2 particles of different size were dispersed in alkyd resin based on soybean oil. Four samples of TiO2 particles were used, three commercial and one obtained by acid catalyzed hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide. The size of the synthesized nanoparticles was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles was performed with propyl gallate and lauryl gallate. The influence of the size of TiO2 nanoparticles, their concentration and type of the surface modification on the rheological properties of alkyd resin was investigated. The obtained results have shown that the viscosity of the prepared dispersions was higher than the viscosity of the pure resin, increases with decreasing particle diameter and decreases with frequency increase. Surface modified particles showed higher influence on the viscosity of alkyd resin than unmodified, because their hydrodynamic volume is higher due to the presence of the adsorbed gallates, leading to the increase of effective volume fraction of particles in dispersion. For the lowest TiO2 concentration, the viscosity was higher for the sample modified with lauryl gallate, due to the higher thickness of the adsorbed layer. The increase of concentration, because of less dispersion stability of the particles modified with propyl gallate, leads to particle agglomeration. The presence of agglomerates, which was confirmed by a change in the slope of the functional dependence of storage modulus on loss modulus, leads to a rapid increase in viscosity.

AB - Serbia is attempting to synchronize its development with the basic assumptions of sustainable development and, consequently, data about environmental impact are necessary. The main goal of this study was to investigate and evaluate the possibility of using the artificial neural network technique for predicting the environmental indicators of sustainable development, in order to overcome the problem of incomplete data and to simulate various development scenarios and their environmental impact. Based on the results obtained, it may be concluded that an artificial neural network can be applied to model the greenhouse gas emissions as one of the environmental parameters of sustainable development.
