AB - Wrought Al-Mg alloys are important and promising material for application in transportation industry primarily due to favorable strength to weight ratio. As a result of their usage in the field of transportation, the weight of vehicle constructions become reduced, resulting in a decrease of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to these advantages, one of the important demands on the application of Al-Mg alloys as a light weight structural material, is providing a high strength, corrosion resistance and good surface quality without relief caused by yield point phenomena and serrated flow. Such a good combination of properties can be achieved by a variation and optimization of thermomechanical processing parameters including a degree of deformation and annealing conditions.
In this study we investigated the effect of cold rolling reductions and different annealing conditions, on the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of an AA5182 type Al-Mg alloy. Material was industrially produced and supplied by Impol-Seval Aluminium Rolling Mill, Sevojno, Serbia, as hot rolled 12 mm thick plates. Further lab-processing of hot rolled plates included cold rolling with 40-85% reduction in thickness, and annealing in the range of temperatures 280-350°C, in a different period of time. Annealed specimens were used for room temperature tensile testing while corrosion testing was performed on the annealed and sensitized specimens. Intergranular corrosion (IGC) susceptibility was determined by nitric acid mass loss test (NAMLT) for the selected states.
The results showed that corrosion resistance, tensile strength and yield point elongation were mostly affected by a degree of cold deformation. It was found that increasing in cold rolling reduction from 40-85% before annealing causes an improved strength level due to grain size refinement. However, yield point elongation became more pronounced and a tendency towards Lüdering as undesirable surface appearance was increased. NAMLT testing showed that the material was corrosion resistant in as-annealed condition while it became susceptible to intergranular corrosion after sensitization treatment. IGC susceptibility of sensitized specimens increases with cold rolling reduction and a raise of annealing temperature.

AB - The current study focuses on creating an initial highly alkaline simulated body fluid whose pH can be decreased to a physiological range by adding CO2 (protein-free simulated body fluid) or a combination of CO2 and human proteins (protein-containing simulated body fluid). The effects of dissolved human proteins, Ca2+ ions, and immersed plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings on the pH and chemical instability of prepared simulated body fluids were investigated. The physiological concentration of dissolved human proteins decreased the pH instability in prepared simulated body fluids by 60% and the physiological concentration of dissolved Ca2+ ions by 15%. The effect of immersing the hydroxyapatite coatings was negligible. In terms of chemical instability, the dissolution of Ca2+ ions caused the blurring of protein-free simulated body fluids after 0.6-1.0 h. In protein-containing simulated body fluids, this phenomenon was undetectable due to their opacity. The effects of human protein presence on the carbonated-apatite-forming ability on the surfaces of immersed hydroxyapatite coatings in the prepared simulated body fluids were also assessed. The experiments validated the bioactivity of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings in the prepared simulated body fluids, regardless of protein presence. On the other hand, under the different experimental conditions (unregulated or regulated pH), the human protein presence had an inhibitory (unregulated pH) or indifferent/promoting (regulated pH) influence on the carbonated-apatite-forming ability. The results of the present study are discussed, as well as the strengths and shortcomings of the prepared simulated body fluids, and are compared to those of previous relevant investigations.

AB - Composite materials based on acrylate UV-cured polymers (Bis-GMA/TEGDMA) as a matrix and reinforcements that can be selected in order to adjust the properties of the obtained composite are used in the field of dental technology. The role of reinforcement is to adjust the mechanical properties, but also to control the shrinkage during curing. As reinforcement, alumina particles doped with iron oxide (Al2O3 Fe) synthesized using the sol-gel technique were selected. In order to simulate the process of adhesive application in real conditions, in vitro testing technique and adhesion properties of synthesized adhesive were used, where tooth tissue was used as a substrate. Comparison with standard adhesives used in dentistry was used to compare adhesion. The quality of the adhesive joint was evaluated using the microhardness testing method using different loads where it is estimated how the adhesive makes a connection with the substrate. It was shown that the synthesized adhesive showed significantly enhanced adhesion compared to the standard adhesive used in dentistry (836%).

AB - The occurrence of abnormal grain growth (AGG) in AA5182 alloy during annealing imposes severe restrictions on processing parameters and deteriorates mechanical properties. In this work, we investigated the effect of chemical composition on the appearance of abnormal grain growth by varying Mg and Mn content in the range of composition limits for standard AA5182 alloy, 4.0-5.0% Mg, and 0.2-0.5% Mn, respectively. Thermo-mechanical processing of alloys included cold rolling with reductions ranging from 40 to 85%, followed by annealing in the temperature range from 350 to 520 degrees C. The results showed that the rise in alloying elements content drives the onset of abnormal grain growth toward higher temperatures. The increase in the cold rolling reduction degree promotes abnormal grain growth and lowers its onset temperature. Abnormal grain growth and grain boundary mobility showed strong anisotropy related to rod-like shape and alignment of Al6Mn(Fe) dispersoids through Zener pinning.

AB - The subject of this study has been an investigation of the homogenization temperature
effect on the microstructure of Al-Mg-Si alloy containing low-melting point Pb and Bi
elements. The results of the characterization show that homogenization at temperatures
lower than 500 °C requires extraordinary long in order to initiate ß-AlFeSi -> α-AlFe(Mn)Si
transformation, necessary for good extrdability of the alloy ransformation, necessary for
good extrudability of the alloy. In addition, precipitation of ß-Mg2Si phase takes place,
decreasing the alloy's aging potential during the further processing. High-temperature
homogenization not only results in complete ß-AlFeSi -> α-AlFe(Mn)Si transformation and
dissolution of ß-Mg2Si phase but expected Pb and Bi escape to the specimen surface does
not occur.
AB - Predmet ovog rada je bilo ispitivanje i karakterizacija uslova homogenizacionog žarenja na
mikrostruktu Al-Mg-Si legure legirane nisko-topivim metalima Pb i Bi.
presovanje. Dodatno, dolazi do izdvajanja ß-Mg2Si faze, čime se smanjuje sposobnost legure
za starenje u daljoj preradi. Visoko-temperaturna homogenizacija ne samo da rezultuje u
potpunoj ß-AlFeSi -> α-AlFe(Mn)Si transformaciji i rastvaranju ß-Mg2Si faze, već i ne dolazi
do očekivanog gubitka Pb i Bi usled izdvajanja na površini uzoraka.

AB - The present study estimated the cracking phenomenon in as-plasma-sprayed hydroxylapatite coatings (HACs) after they were being subjected to the severe cutting conditions in the direction perpendicular to the coating/substrate interface. In order to evaluate the effects of substrate preheating on the occurrence of micro-cracks, the HACs were deposited at different initial substrate temperatures (T-S = 20, 100 and 200 degrees C). The changes in phase composition and HA splat morphology with T-S were observed and were correlated with the cracking occurrence. The results showed that severe cutting conditions introduced a localized cracking in the regions of HACs dominantly attributed to the brittle hydroxyl- deficient amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) phase. This effect was particularly observable in the HACs deposited without preheating of substrate. On the other hand, the preheating of substrate reduced the presence of micro-cracks and caused insignificant changes in the average local phase composition. In HACs deposited with preheating of substrate, the HA splats (of which HACs are composed) were thinner and recrystallized HA regions seemed smaller in size and more evenly distributed. These results implied potentially important roles of the HA splat formation mechanism on the distribution of ACP and recrystallized HA regions in the as-plasma-sprayed HACs and the cracking resistance of HACs.

AB - Causes of failure of brass condenser tubes (CuZn28Sn1) in a thermal power plant in Serbia are analysed. Results of testing by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have indicated the presence of ammonia and nitrogen compounds on fracture surfaces and on the inner surface of the tubes. These compounds are specific agents that cause stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in brass. Analysis of fracture surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown the brittle transgranular fracture due to the occurrence of SCC. The resistance of brass condenser tubes to other types of corrosion, such as erosion, general and selective corrosion (dezincification) is also considered. Some procedures are proposed to reduce the risk of SCC in the brass condenser tubes.

AB - The aim of this work was to examine the dependence of the local surface structure (surface structural heterogeneity) on the local thickness (thickness uniformity) and structure properties along the thickness of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. For the deposition process, a relatively small size of the feedstock hydroxyapatite powder (HAP) (33 mu m) was used. The HACs were deposited at different stand-off distances (SODs) (80, 100, and 150 mm) without preheating of substrates. The thickness measurements were performed by using the calibrated micrometer and light microscopy (LM). The surface micro-structure was analyzed by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS), whereas the micro-structure along the thickness of HACs was studied by using the MRS, X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), and LM (combined with chemical etching). The results showed a heterogeneous phase distribution on the surface of each HAC analyzed as well as the non-uniform thickness of HACs. Apparently, a correlation existed between the local surface structure and the local thickness of HACs. However, the MRS, XRPD, and LM analyses of micro-structure along the thickness of HACs indicated that the differences in the local surface structure could be related to the different recrystallization established during the plasma deposition process in the different parts along the thickness of each HAC analyzed.

AB - The objective of this research is to consider the effects of certain parameters of the friction-welding process on the morphology of an aluminum/copper joint. The effect of the following parameters was monitored: the operating time, the operating pressure, the forging time and the forging pressure. The speed was constant during the binding process and reached 1500 min(-1). The preparation of the welding materials was performed in accordance with the industrial production conditions. With the SEM-EDS analysis, it was found that the morphology of the Al/Cu interface slightly changes when we change the distance from the rotation axis, irrespective of the combination of the friction-welding parameters. Apart from this, the joined effects of the operating pressure of 48 MPa and the forging pressure of 160 MPa caused a morphological change of the Al/Cu interface, while the forging time at the moment of the combined pressurizing effect significantly influenced the modification of the Al/Cu interface shape within a very narrow time interval of only a few seconds.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of substrate preheating on the structural properties of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. The deposition experiments were performed within the 20-200 degrees C temperature range at different stand-off distances. The structural properties in the thickness direction and at the surface of the HACs were investigated by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray powder diffractometry. The deposition without the preheating of the substrate produced HACs with crystallinity gradient in the thickness direction. At the stand-off distance of 80 mm, the preheating of the substrate at 200 degrees C practically eliminated the crystallinity gradient. At distances from the coating/substrate interface shorter than similar to 100 mu m, the increase of crystallinity with the preheating of the substrate was dominantly attributed to the recrystallization of hydroxyl-rich ACP into HA. At longer distances and higher initial substrate temperatures ( gt 100 degrees C), the crystallinity changes were negligible, whereas the recrystallization of hydroxyl-deficient ACP into oxyapatite (OA) was also possible. The X-ray diffractometry indicated the deposition conditions under which a minimum residual stress was achieved. The results of the present study strongly suggested the relation between the ACP - gt HA remystallization process and the bonding strength of the HACs.

AB - During the coal pulverizing, the working parts of the ventilation mill are being worn by the sand particles. For this reason, the working parts are usually protected with materials resistant to wear (hardfaced/thermal sprayed coatings). The aim of this study was to evaluate the tribological performance of four different types of coatings as candidates for wear protection of the mill's working parts. The coatings were produced by using the filler materials with the following nominal chemical composition: NiFeBSi-WC, NiCrBSiC, FeCrCTiSi, and FeCrNiCSiBMn, and by using the plasma arc welding and flame and electric arc spraying processes. The results showed that Ni-based coatings exhibited higher wear resistance than Fe-based coatings. The highest wear resistance showed coating produced by using the NiFeBSi-WC filler material and plasma transferred arc welding deposition process. The hardness was not the only characteristic that affected the wear resistance. In this context, the wear rate of NiFeBSi-WC coating was not in correlation with its hardness, in contrast to other coatings. The different wear performance of NiFeBSi-WC coating was attributed to the different type and morphological features of the reinforcing particles (WC).

AB - Corrosion properties of an aluminium alloy 7000 series were investigated by different electrochemical methods. The alloy was subjected to the one-step and to a new two-step precipitation hardening. Polarization measurements in the 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution have shown a more positive value of the pitting potential (Epit) and a higher corrosion resistance for the two-step aged alloy. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has also shown that the two-step aged alloy has better corrosion properties (higher value of polarization resistance, Rp, and lower value of double-layer capacitance, Cdl) comparing to the one-step aged alloy.

AB - This paper analysis the cause's dynamically loaded screws failure, using the structural analysis of mechanical properties and numerical simulation. The comparison with the new unbroken screws, which were not in use, has been done to determine the condition of the broken (dynamically loaded) ones. Analysis was performed, according to the following test methods and activities: non-destructive testing, visual inspection, radiographic testing, chemical analysis of screws sample materials, mechanical properties of screws' materials. Structure analysis of screws materials: Testing macrostructure (light optical microscope, SEM-EDS) examination of the microstructure (light optical microscope, SEM-EDS), fractographic examination. Numerical simulation of the stress state of the dynamically loaded screws was done in CATIA software package, and it was identical to the bolt loads, during service exploitation. The results between numerical simulation and structural analysis were quite coinciding - the difference is about 8-10%, which is pretty good for these types of experiments. Such an overlap, says that the stress value at the very screws is reliable and give us a true picture of loadings. Structural mechanical tests have shown a very pronounced effect of dynamic loads, that large shear stress shows also as a good agreement, where between the stresses, obtained by numerical simulation and structural mechanical testing. Analysing the results, obtained by numerical simulation and structural mechanical testing were performed with the redistribution of critical stresses, and proposal for the structure optimization. The comparative analysis methods have been provided the precise prediction of fracture appearance and made possible to define the preventive measures.

AB - The sensitization degree of austenitic stainless steel welded joints was investigated by electrochemical methods of the double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL EPR) in H(2)SO(4) + KSCN solution, and by the measurement of corrosion potential of the steel in the drop of the solution of HNO(3) + FeCl(3) + HCl. The welded joints were tested by X-ray radiographic method in order to check the presence of the weld defects. The grain sizes of the base metal and the welded joints were determined by optical microscopy. Good agreement between the results obtained by different electrochemical methods was obtained. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the austenitic stainless steel welded joints has shown a significant degree of sensitization. The double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic method gave quantitative evidence about the susceptibility of stainless steel to intergranular corrosion.

AB - Amorphous polymer-derived Si-C-N ceramics can be doped with different elements (Al, B etc.) through various pre-ceramic polymer routes. Thus, controlling of the high temperature oxidation resistance can be achieved on an atomic level. An important factor for silica layer growth is oxygen diffusion in protective thermally grown layers. In order to get insight of the oxygen diffusion mechanism, analysis should include both, bulk and short-circuit diffusion. XRD measurements of oxidized Si-C-N and SiC revealed the possibility that oxide layers were fully crystallized and are composed of nano-sized cristobalite-like grains. Secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profile analysis after (18)O(2)-(16)O(2) isotope exchange experiments on oxidized SiC indicated that short-circuit diffusion is probably grain boundary diffusion of molecular oxygen.
